No backlight - Imac intel based

Hi I was hoping someone could help me-
My Mac is the most treasured thing I own and has always worked perfectly since I
bought it approx. 2 years ago.
Recently I went on a business trip to America from the UK. I left the clock on my mac set to the time in America so my partner could check the time difference.
When I arrived home last night with some trepidation he told me it was broken.
Well it's not broken it just has no light in the screen.
When you turn it on, you hear the start up noise and fan running but the screen is totally black.
However when you shine a light on the screen you can barely but just be able to see the icons on the screen as it should look.
Its as if there is no light in it, but I have no idea how this just happened.
He used his own laptop for the 2 weeks I was away and assures me he did nothing, that he looked on the time and put back to sleep and then the next time he went to check it, the screen never 'woke up'.
I really needed to use the computer to upload all my photos taken on the recent business trip as well as to finish the artwork for the business. I only have a few weeks and I'm very worried that I will have to send this off to apple and won't be able to do my work.
The back light on the power button also does not seem to be working. No flashing no nothing.
When i bought the mac it had a tiny sort of smudge in the top left corner, like a patch of white smoke was trapped in the glass. I have no idea if this is relevant, but now that it is black, the patch seems to look bigger and more obvious than ever. I just wish I'd had the sense to mention it at the time, I did have apple care package but only for a year, which is now run out.
It;s so frustrating as I can almost see my screen but only in the dark with a torch - this is no good obviously and I must get it fixed as asp
If anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful-
Many Thanks

Don't worry - neither of the procedures I have suggested threaten your files, folders, etc. They are commonly used procedures for trouble-shooting problems such as yours. Have a look here for more info on resetting the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
and here for SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 (make sure you click on the iMac link down the page a bit)
They're both easy to do, safe, only take a few minutes and might save a call to Apple.
Now get some sleep

  • Unable to achieve Gigabit speeds with onboard NIC (iMAC Intel based)

    Hi,
I've recently noticed that my iMAC's built in 10/100/1000 NIC is only negotiating up to 100mb. I have a direct (cat5e straight through) connection from the iMAC to a 10/100/1000 port on an Airport Extreme Base station.
I've tried several different (known good) straight through ethernet cables and I either get NO link or at most 100mb. I'm starting to think that the NIC might be flaky of failing because during a few tests with different cables, I got link after a very long delay. Close to a minute or more after plugging in the cable.
Before I call Apple tech support, I figured I'd check the forum to see if this is a known issue or if anyone else has seen this.
    - Some more specs of my system....
    20" iMAC (Intel based)
    3 gig DRAM
    OS 10.5.2
    Thanks...

I'm seeing (within the Network Utility) when I select the onboard ethernet adapter that the speed is 100mb.
I've been trusting this output mainly because if I leave the Network Utility screen open and unplug or re-plug the cable back in, the speed <value> disappears and then re-appears once the speed (I'm assuming) has been negotiated.
Additionally, I've just checked the Network Utility on my Powerbook G4 (here at work), and it shows the wired ethernet speed to be (1G) as opposed to (100mb). I can think of no logical reason why my iMAC's ethernet port would be negotiating to 100mb unless either the NIC is truly flaky or the AEBS needs to somehow be configured accordingly.
Thanks. Let me know if you have any other thoughts..

  • Any problem with imac intel-based -power supply?

I just took possesion of an IMAC intel-based with 10.8 os. It is good so far but I'm not sure if alot of on/off power button usage is recommended. Is it better to put it to sleep for 1 hourish, or keep popping the power button. Thanks for reading. Double Thanks for an answer.

You should turn off the iMac only when you aren't going to use it for some days

  • Can one upgrade the graphic card for Imac (intel based)?

can one upgrade the graphic card in an Imac (intel based)?

While anything is theoretically possible, you would need to find another GPU that is compatible with your specific model iMac, and you would need to modify OS X to use a driver appropriate for whatever you propose to install. Future OS X updates would break it in short order. Not only that, you'd void whatever warranty that remains. It's not worth it.

What can I delete from what folders to A) get more space and B) speed up machine.  2009 Imac Intel based Leopard

If you start deleting things in hidden system folders, or in an /Library folder you may very well mess up something.
That is why I say limit what you delete to your User folder only and only those files you've put or created there.  Start messing with anything system or application related without know exactly what you are doing and you risk fubar'ing something.
There are in fact many places in the system areas that will appear to be redundant, but they are not so just because they have similar path or file names.
Also, how much free space do you have with just a freshly rebooted system?  If your system does not have much RAM (given the apps your normally run on it), it may be creating quite a bit of swap space.  That will be flushed out with a reboot, but if your system is RAM limited, then it will just grow back.  In such a case, more RAM would help.
Use Activity Monitor to look at your RAM and swap use over a few days of normal use - look particularly at the page outs, as that will tell you how much virtual memory is actually being used on the drive.  If page outs are high (thousands to 10's of thousands or more) your system is RAM limited, and your drive will be filling up with swap files.

  • HT3964 I did the SMC reset for my iMac intel-based and now it won't turn on. What can I do to fix this?

I did the SMC reset for my iMac intel-based and now it won't turn on. What can I do to fix this?

Well, first things first... is the power cord fully plugged into the back of the iMac (and the wall, for that matter)?
Make sure the wall outlet has power, too... I've scratched my head over stupid issues where I forgot to flip a wall switch.
If the outlet does have power, then try doing a pram zap. Command + option + P + R (hold those at startup).
If the machine is receiving power, you should be able to see some LEDs if you look through the bottom grate of the machine to the left of the RAM door.

  • Clean install my imac intel based machine

    Hi folks,
I'm needing to replace the hard drive and clean install my intel based imac 17" (early 2006) machine and have only the osx 10.4 disk. Do i need another disk to begin this? I am rather new to this machine (I guess you could say newbie)
Anyone know if there is a step-by-step to replace this hard drive and then install the os. From what I've read there is supposed to be an install disk besides the osx disk?
    Any help is appreciated.

Just for your reference, if you lost those original disks, I recommend calling AppleCare to ask for replacements:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
To be sure you are identifying your Mac correctly, follow this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
Intel Macs as the others have said will not boot from the black retail Tiger install disks that look like this box , and will only boot from the gray disks which came with them.
Older Macs will boot from newer retail discs (to the spec limit of the operating system, for Tiger that means built-in Firewire and DVD drive*) than came with them. To find out which one came with which Mac, see this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
Also there is no such thing as a Tiger clean install, as my user tip explains. Replacing your hard disk, effectively is like an erase and install:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Before doing this, I strongly recommend isolating the issues on your Mac. Erasing, or replacing the hard drive is rarely needed, except when it the hard drive is truly dead. If you need help isolating issues with your hard drive, we'd be happy to show you how.
    * DVD drive requirement can be overcome if you get the Tiger Media Exchange on Apple's Tiger upgrade website.

  • Will iMac Intel based computer see Sony DCR-HC96?

Anyone out there had experience downloading image data from the Sony DCR-HC series camcorder to iMovie? I under that a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire connection via Sony's Handycam station is required. Optimally, iMovie should open automatically. I've read some conflicting reports in these forums. Any information would be appreciated. THANKS.
iMac Intel Core Duo.   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Richard Raub,
When you say "image data" are you talking about Photos or Movies.
For photos I imagine a USB connect would be required to transfer the photos.
For video a firewire connection is required.
iMovie should recognize the camcorder connected by firewire and allow you to import the mini DV tape to computer/iMovie.
This is a SD camcorder that shoots 4:3 and has a 16:9 shooting mode(not true widescreen)
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=833479&tstart=0
I've never experienced iMovie opening automatically when any type of device was connected to the computer thru any type interface. Maybe other members know of this feature

  • How do I install Windows on my iMac (intel based) computer

Hi, I have all the software, Windows xp, and the parallels supporting software. The question is how do I load it onto my computer?

Just a friendly suggestion: update your sig - it is confusing to see the G5 iMac listed there while you are asking a question about the Intel iMac.
In your Utility Folder there's a BootCamp Assistant program. Start it up and make sure your printer has a nice stack of paper - about 25 pages if I recall properly. At the first screen once the program is running you'll have to options: Print Instructions & Proceed with the Installation. Select print and if your printer is slow, go get a cup of coffee.
The highlights: make sure you have a valid copy of XP (at least SP2) or Vista and have your Mac OS installation disk handy, it has files you'll need once Windows has finished installing. The first step is to partition the drive - unless your computer is brand new, I recommend that before partitioning you start up with your Mac installer disk, run Disk Utilities, and repair the drive. When BootCamp Assistant partitions your drive you have to decide how much space to give it - 20GB to 40GB should be plenty unless you are going to use Windows for lots of games. Once the partitioning is finished, pop in the Windows installer and click on the install Windows button that BootCamp Assistant gives you. Now you are in Windows land and after you have entered your Windows Account name and gotten to the Windows desktop, eject the Windows disc, pop in the Mac installer, and let it install the BootCamp drivers. And finally, while running Windows, visit the Apple Support site and download the BootCamp 2.1 upgrade. There are several different versions depending on which version of Windows you are running.

  • Internet cafe software for managing 27 iMac Intel based

    Dear all,
I am planning to setup a 27 iMac based internet cafe.
Do you know any software to run a typical internet cafe with Point of Sale for products and time and account management?
    With best regards,

Check out Hodoman Timer for an inexpensive product that claims to do what you need. Alternatively, ExpressPay, the same system used a Kinkos stores for billing copyier time, also supports Macs - although there's probably a higher up-front cost to their system.

  • Imac Intel based shutting down

    Hi,
I'm having problems with my imac.
it will turn off by it self after a few minutes of usage.
And after it turn of, it will take a long time until I can turn it back on.
I'm sure it a hardware issue because it happens even if I use windows with bootcamp.
Does anyone knows of something that I can do to fix it myself? because i can't have apple to check it, because I moved to Brazil, and I'm stuck in a country where when people see my iMac they will ask if it is a Monitor. and there's no one able to fix it around here.
It's kind of funny, bought an Mac because I was tired of dealing with PC's but it seams like it wasn't such a good choice, because if it was a desktop PC I could just take it apart and fix the problem.
At least, while it's not working is a nice way to make your living room beautiful.
    Thanks for any help,
    Roni

  • Just bought Ear Force Z11 - headset, can't get it to work on my iMac intel based on the Windows side

I have used Boot Camp on my iMac 21" early 2008 to partition and set-up Windows 7 so that I could use my FSX Flight simulator, I bought EarForce Z11 headset to use with my simulator and can't get it to work, has anyone else ran in to this problem?  If anyone can help I would appriciate it, the computer recognizes that I plugged them in but I am only getting sound over the iMac speakers and nothing with the headset.

assuming it works on osx then
    sounds like
1, the mixer in windows have muted the headset connection you can change that in the control panel
    2. the driver for your audio card is not working 100% (read people say that the 32bit win7 don't have drivers from apple avaible)
with the right drivers it should work
my imac 21" have a splitter connected where I have external speakers from logitech and a skullcandy headset
connected both play and the internal imac speakers only make a sound at bootup at first
this is both in osx, was in win7 64bit and win8 64bit

  • 24" iMac (Intel based) does not boot.

    Hi there,
My iMac 24" refuses to boot, OS Lion present but no recovery nor anything else.
If i try to diagnose the machine, this message pops up "! OUCH !!! : mshdlr loc zero not zero ! 00007007000000000h @:eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh"
Tried to replace RAM, detach HDD, inserted Lion or any other OS but results in a blank screen after spin.... It hangs somewhere but no idea.
Thanks to you all for the eventual responses
    Cheers
    Erik

Do some basic resets such as iMac SMC and PRAM reset . If those don't work double check the connection, check to see if it's the plug socket, power strip or other connection. If you eliminate those then and it still won't boot if the machine is less than a year old it's covered by warranty however if you bought AppleCare it will also be covered. If you have AppleCare give them a call and they will do some trouble shooting over the phone and if it still won't work they'll help schedule an appointment at your local Apple Store. If you don't have an Apple Store in your area, you will need to take it to an AASP and AppleCare can help you locate one close to you.

  • IMac Intel based with Snow Leopard

I believe that when I bought my new iMac, and transferred over files from my old iMac. Norton Security came with it, which I did not want. Everytime I boot my iMac, I literally get 12 different pop up windows saying the Norton Security won't run. There are 3 different icons in the System Preference window. I removed the program from my application folder, but these icons still are in system preferences. How do I remove them from system preferences??
    Thanks. Pamela

    Hello Pamela:
The link I think you need is here:

Norton software is a disaster on a Mac.  It clobbered me several years ago.  Besides, there are NO documented viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.

  • Using Imac intel based as wireless router?

Can you use your imac as a wireless router? If anyone knows, email me.

One more thing..... Does using your Imac as a wireless router reduce your processing speed signicantly with only one laptop sharing your internet connection? Would buying a separate wireless router be preferred?
    Hi
You can, if the following are true:
    - The iMac receives its internet through the ethernet
    port
    - It has a built-in Airport card
If so, you can use Internet Sharing. Launch System
Preferences, go to Sharing, then Internet. Select:
    - Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
    - To computers using: Airport
Click Airport Options to set a name and encryption
settings for your new network. Then click Start.
Other wireless-enabled computers should now be able
to see and connect to your new wireless network.
