No basic border filter on cropped shots?

I'm making a movie basically on V1 and V2. V1 is standard material from my own camera. V2 is imported from a 16:9 source. All shots on v2 are scaled to 80% (so V1 is partly visible) and cropped (all 4 sides), as to get rid of the black beams on top and on the bottom. Now i want to apply a basic border filter to the tracks on V2, to detach the material from the underlying tracks, but fce (2.03) refuses to accept the filter. Other filters are accepted without any problem. I presume that the problem is caused by the cropping procedure. If it's not possible to apply a border filter to cropped material, is there a way to do it in a different way?

Thanks for your help. I tried, but did not succeed in getting the precise image i'm looking for, and apart from that it would take a lot of time to do this as the V1 track is divided in more than 50 short shots. Anyway i now understand why i could not apply the border. What i need is a way to really cut the shots, as you can do in Photoshop (select your part of the picture and cut it out). This apparently cannot be done in FCE. I tried to do it in imovie, but no way. I have only little experience with QTpro, but as far as i can see, there is no possibility to really cut out part of the video, to get rid of the 16:9 black beams on top and on the bottom. May be some other application?

  • FCP Border Filter

    Hello.
I am layering some 72 dpi TIFFs in FCPHD in a scrapbook like motif. I put a simple white border around the stills and scaled them down to fit ~4 on each frame. Most of them appear perfect, however 1 or 2 are dropping out the right side of the border.
I've viewed at 100% and greater, and still don't see the right side. Unfortunately I don't have a broadcast monitor to check, but the filter does look correct in the Viewer, only not in the Canvas. Is this a render or display issue? Is there some other limitation with FCP's Border filter? something else I am missing?
    TIA for your assistance.

Most of them appear perfect, however 1
or 2 are dropping out the right side of the border.
What exactly do you mean by that? The white border is not appearing in the frame at 100%? could you take a screen grab and post it?
If what I mentioned is the problem you are explaining, another thing to take into consideration is the title safe area, as well as your final output device. will this be viewed as a quicktime on a website, where the entire frame will be visible or will it be on a television? If it's on a t.v., It's pretty much impossible to judge where things will be cropped off on each side since every ntsc television has a different style plasic frame...

  • Putting a border on a cropped image/video in FCE 3.5

Hello folks, my first post so be gentle.
Can anyone tell me how I can put a border on a cropped image or video clip in FCE 3.5?
At the mo if I want a border on a PIP I need to scale it down then make the border thicker, it meens the area that I want to see in detail (the PIP) is smaller than it is in the main window.
So cropping is the obvious solution but when I do the border gets cropped out too.
I could do it with miltiple layers but it seems a messy workaround.

Please excuse me for horning in. Andy's instructions specify this plugin is for Final Cut Pro. Do you know if it is also good for Final Cut Express?

  • Problems with Basic 3D Filter in Motion 2.0.1

    Hello helpful people,
when I apply the Basic 3D filter to a layer the layer becomes a little fuzzy. With no settings on the filter changed. If I put the filter on only a piece of the middle of the timeline my object goes from sharp to fuzzy and then sharp again.
Also with the filter on, it seems to be about 1 pixel higher in size.
Any workaround around that? Or other ideas?

  • How to rotate/spin basic 3d filter

    Hi everybody,
In Motion 2, I have put a layer in 3D perspective by using the basic 3D filter. Now I want to rotate/spin the layer in 3D. Is this possible? I tried placing keyframes and clicking/dragging the filter, but that didn't work. Any help is appreciated!

    hi,
you can animate the 3d filter to make it rotate in a faux 3d way. But you can make the whole thing spin in 3d space. For that you will have to get Motion 3

  • Basic border, then render

I want to present a set of jpg stills with a white basic border, chosen from the Effects/Video Filters/Border menu. I want six or seven of these to appear successively, overlapping, as if on a scrapbook page, each image somewhat less than 1/4 full screen size, and super'd over a moving background clip. When I render, the white border disappears from the right hand edge of some of the later images. Also, the last image in the sequence, which is alone on the screen, the others having faded out, now also minus part of its border, flickers, due to an alternate black frame having appeared in the rendered image.
Is there a way round this?

    That is NOT an answer.
Of course it is. Something in the OP's workflow is causing a rendering error. Hard to see exactly what from here, but a solution was offered that will eliminate having to render the border in FCP (if indeed that is the cause).
Result: OP gets the job out the door and gets paid. They can do the tweaking and troubleshooting later, when there is time to find out if it's down to operator error or really a flaw in the software.
What solution does your reply offer, exactly?

  • Applying  a border to a cropped image??? Help.

How do i apply a border to an image that's been cropped? It seems that everything I try will add the border to the original edges of the image, and then the border gets cropped out along with the edges of the video when I start cropping.

    Magic-hat wrote:
So, this would mean that by using a color matte underneath, it's parameters would be independent of those of the image above it?
    Yes
If I wanted to have the image move or re-size, I would have to then apply the changes to the border seperately as well?
Yes, although since you are cropping an image you could copy the clip you've cropped, then Control Click the matte clip, select Paste Attributes, and check the Crop box. This will size your matte to the exact crop of your clip. Then load the clip into the viewer and since it's a crop you can slightly modify the crop or you can simply move the matte clip a little down and to the right or left or whatever your taste desires. Now you have your clip and a border.
If I wanted to have the image move or re-size, I would have to then apply the changes to the border seperately as well? Or would I nest them into 1 clip then apply size changes?
At this point Nesting them would be faster.

  • Basic 3d Filter

Im creating a motion project and i want to use the 3d video filter to rotate an object with something on the back but i need to know what kind of image will i be able to use for the backside image

Like Specialcase said, you can plug any object into the Back Face input. (shape, text, movie, still, generator, etc)
You do need it to be in your project already though.
Note that you can not drag it directly from the Library to the Image well in the Dashboard. You must have it in your project first (ie in the Layer List, or Media tab)

  • Flicker-shimmer solved

I think I've solved the vexing flicker-shimmer problem that I occasionally noted when creating a picture slide show with FCP. The cross dissolve transitions would sometimes expose a "jittery" picture thought to be a problem with interlacing, etc. What I've done is the following: Arrange all pictures in their final length and sequence without transitions. Select the entire grouping. Then go to Effects, Video Filters, Image Stabilization. Render the grouping. Then add the transitions and render again. You will notice the rendering takes longer, but the end result is a much more stable and ficker free slide show. I seemed to work for me.

So I spent the day working on this, believe it or not, making a bit of a science project out of it. I was able to resolve the same problem by just stripping the slides down, removing my filters and transitions. Then I tried the gentleman's solution here, using the stabilizer, which resolved the bad transition issues but still left me with some shaky slides. I stripped them down again, still with the stabilizer on all, and this time added de-interlace filters for the ones from faster moving footage, rendered, added the transitions, rendered again. This looked quite good on the tv. Finally, I tried another round, this time stripping it all back, removing even the Stabilizer filter, and added just the De-Interlace filter where needed, (plus the basic border filter stripped back to just one frame line to clean the edges). Render. Then add the transitions. Rerender. This looked just fine as well, and spared me the sluggish render time when putting transitions over "stabilized" slides.
So it appears that the solution to the shaky transitions was more about the order in which the filters are applied, rather than the Stabilizer filter per se. So long as the filter is applied and rendered before the transitions are applied and rerendered, it turns out ok--the stabilizer isn't the key, but the order. Thanks for your solution, it put me on the path to mine!

  • Easy way to put black border around cropped video.

    Hi
I was wondering if anyone knows of an easy way to put a 2-3 pixel black border around a cropped, shrunk video clip.
Its kind of a picture-in-picture deal, but the "simple border" filter doesn't take into account the cropped edges. I've also tried drop shadow, but I need it to be hard lines.
Any suggestions (I'm looking for the easy way because I need to apply this effect to about 100 clips, otherwise I'd just put a black colour matte behind the image).
    Cheers
    Chris.

Layer the Boris Vector Shape generator around your clip. It's a great tool.

  • Video Filter - Basic 3D Question

    Oh great and wise ones,
Basic 3D Filter question. Problem, whenever you have an image/video clip twisted along its axis via the Basic 3D filter, the corners/edges get cut off. Are there any filters/tricks to manipulating an object in 3D space? I'm not looking for anything fancy here, just the basics. Or should I assume this is what Motion is for?
    Thanks!
    lance

    Hi -
Double click on the clip with the Basic 3D effect applied in the timeline.
Click on the Filters tab in the viewer.
At the bottom of the Basic 3D section you will see a control for Scale.
Adjust the Scale control until the edges of your frame are not being cut off.
If your frame is starting full frame and rotating, this means you might want to keyframe the Scale control so that it starts at 100% when the frame is flat to us, then becomes less as the frame rotates on edge, thereby keeping the edges of the frame visible.
    Hope this helps.

  • Creating borders when Cropping

I am trying to have borders on all fours sides of a video clip, but when I try crop the image, for example on the left and right sides, the borders are gone. Is there anyway to accomplish creating borders on cropped images?
    Thanks....

    hi,
if i wanted to have a layer of video playing and it to have a border around it I might do it one of several ways.
crop you image as much as you like, create a coloured rectangle bigger than the video layer. Put this below the video layer in the same group so the edges stick out and it looks like a border.
or maybe use the Simple border filter on the video layer ( or does the cropping cut this off?) in which case you could try using a rectangle mask on the video layer rather than croppng it.
er cant think of anything else at the moment

  • Croping and border

Need to crop some video, add border, reduce and move through frame. Adding border filter doesn't add border to cropped image in motion tab. Suggestions?

Couple ways you can make this work - the best might be to make a new sequence. Put your video on
V2 - your matte color on V1. Make your video slightly smaller so you can see the matte on the edges.
Now nest. You can now take your video with the border and place it on your original timeline and move it all about.
