"No batteries available" but the battery is in and charged?

I have a similar problem to other postings already with an "interesting" quirk.
The battery is in and has a good charge (as judged by the green dots), however everytime I start up the powerbook the power adapter turns orange but the battery indicator shows 0%. Then after a few minutes of this, a big fat X appears in the battery icon and the message "No batteries available". However system profiler shows that there is a battery but that it has no charge. The battery truly is not recognized because I can't start up from battery alone.
So what have I tried, two independent batteries and a change of the mother board (under warranty). Even after all this still the same problem. Reset the PRAM, reset the PMU. Can't do the battery firmware upgrade because the firmware upgrader doesn't see the battery!!! I tried calibrating the battery but if I disconnect the power adapter it switches into sleep mode right away cause it thinks it has 0% in the battery. I left it in sleep mode overnight hoping that would reset it but nothing.
Thanks for any input that could solve this problem.

Bummer… what about zapping PRAM and resetting the PMU?
Already tried that and still nothing. I noticed reading though older posts that others are having a similar problem I wonder if this is unsolvable
I tried running coconutBattery. It shows no charge in the battery and that the battery is not charging while the 0% is in the battery icon. When the X appears in the battery icon coconutBattery goes really wierd and gives the same output as it there was not battery at all. Also to clarify the system profiler doesn't see a battery connected when the X is present in the icon.
The battery does appear to be charging however while the icon has the 0% in the battery window. Just over this afternoon have gone from 4 to all the green indicators lit up. Just too bad that the computer can't see that the battery is charged. It still simply switches from 0% to the X in the icon and shuts down right away if I disconnect the power adapter.
