No black&white or grayscale option for postscript printer

At work we have a Sharp laser copier printer that is capable of printing in color.  They tell us, however, to avoid printing in color because it costs more.
Normally, in the print dialog, there's an advanced option where you can select to print in color or grayscale.  For this printer, for some reason, when we provide the address, and MacOS queries the printer type, it just appears as "Generic PostScript printer," and as a result, there is no such advanced option.
Is there another "generic" postscript driver we can select that will include this option?
Incidentally, I can't figure out how to change what driver is being used for this printer.  Any hints?
Thanks.

The Generic PS driver included with OS X will only print in colour to a colour device. As you have found, there is no setting to change it to Grayscale/B&W.

If the Sharp supports the PCL printer language, there is a Generic PCL Laser driver also included with OS X that will only print in B&W.
If the Sharp does not support the PCL printer language then check the Sharp web site for a "PPD" for your model. This should give you the option to print in B&W.

If the printer is already created then you can use the CUPS web admin page to change the settings for the printer. But it is often just easier to delete the printer from Printers & Scanners and create a new one. Note that when creating the printer, you can click on the Use menu and this will give you options to select an alternate driver.

  • How to export a CMYK document to a black/white or greyscale pdf for print?

Hello, I have some knowledge in graphics design, but very little about color management.
Currently I need to convert an instruction manual I made to black and white output only. We'd prefer to keep the indesign (.indd) and it's source images in their respective colors, but when exporting the document to a pdf my printer can use, we'd like to make that document a black and white pdf, as it's a black/white manual anyway. A little color conversion isn't to bad, as long as it's reasonable. all images that might give trouble are in greyscale anyway.
So how do I export a full color indesign document to a black&white/greyscale pdf?
    ps:
very newb question, but if you don't ask, you never learn:
When do you use the colours "registration", and when do you use "paper"?

I am also trying desperately to convert my CMYK colors into a grayscale so that when I print the document the printer only uses K (and C=0 M=0 Y=0)
And I saw this bit of info you wrote a few months ago. I am working working with photoshop CS4. I tried to follow it but I found the following difficulties. Hope you don't mind me writing over your text.
    RGB image --> Grayscale
New doc --> CMYK image, same size, empty
Copy Grayscale and paste into the K-channel of the CMYK image. - (It only allows me to copy onto the CMYK layer but not onto the Black so I had to Drag layer onto channel delete the black layer and rename my new layer as black but then the document changes from CMYK to Multichannel and I have to re-change the mode again to CMYK but this already prints CMYK...)
    Place image in InDesign doc.
Everything else (vector, text) by K-only.
(...then when I placet that CMYK file into InDesign, and PDF it, on the output preview still separates the grayscale image into CMYK and when I print, the printer still prints CMYK instead of only K)
So then I say OK so.. let's use the Multichannel document instead, which it actually seems to print on K only (while CMY=0), it only allows me to save as PSD. and when I try to place it on Indesign... I have a message saying that this file is using an unsupported colour space, only RGB,CMYK, lab, indexed, and bitmap are supported by the photoshop filter
On top of that I have been asked for a Jpeg image in black and white which prints only K (while CMY=0). I have tried with channel mixed presets and even though the info on screen is now C=0, M=0, Y=0 and K= various values, when I send it to print. The printer still prints with all the CMYK colours
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
    Thank you

  • Oracle White Paper- Storage Option for RAC. on Linux

    hi..
This in reference with White Paper.. Stotage Option for RAC on LINUX. Author- Umadevi Byrappa.
Which states on page 10: To Use NAS for RAC database file storage select the file system storage option in OUI. or the Clustered file system storage option in DBCA.
With which i disagree. File storage option of oracle 10g RAC only shows.
    1. Clustered File system.
    2. ASM
    3. Raw Devices.
When i try to select Cfs and select the shared directory on NFS it says. < Directory_Name> is not a clustered file system or Shared on Both <Server_1> < Server_2>. and at this point of time i m stuck.
    1. I dont want to use OCFS as its not supporting NAS.
    2. Selecting CFS doesnt recognise mounted shared volume as valid storage device option can only store OCRfile and CSS file.
    3. So, I have to use ASM.. with zero padded files..which i dont want to because no other option. ( PART NO. B10766-02 PAGE C-6)
Also, I would like oracle to provide Back up Recovery Option or Document which tells me how could i Recover Database when i use Zero Padded Files.
What would be the best Option in the above scenario ?
I hope by applying patch or with workaround somehow it shows Filesystem ONLY.I'll be the happiest man in this Case.
Any suggestions and corrections are most welcome. I wish i m wrong.
    Nadeem ( [email protected] )

NFS isn't a clustered file system at all - by RFC it is an exported file system with access controls
If your vendor offers an NFS solution over and beyond that - more power to them. However that isn't "NFS"..
    http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3010.html
You can use NFS in a clustered server environment (to mount apps, read only data and for synchronous access to files), however it doesn't support the concurrency out of the box for RDBMS transactions - if a vendor is supporting this promise then that is for you to decide.
However i stand by my statement that NFS is a file system exported across your network and not a full clustered file system.

  • Why a Windows option for Banner Printing & Not MAC?

I was told by Epson that MAC doesn't offer a Banner option for my Epson Printer, but that there is an option for the Windows platform. This seems strange to me, especially when MAC is supposed to be the better graphics machine.
Does anyone know why this is the case? Is it just a question of limited printer driver options that Apple offers?

I was told by Epson that MAC doesn't offer a
    Banner
option for my Epson Printer, but that there is an
option for the Windows platform. This seems
    strange
to me, especially when MAC is supposed to be the
    better graphics machine.
It is not that Macs don't offer a banner option for
you Epson printer. Rather, it is the Epson printer
driver that doesn't offer this feature on the Mac
platform. There is a significant difference between
    the two statements.
Does anyone know why this is the case? Is it just
    a
question of limited printer driver options that
    Apple
    offers?
Apple does not write the printer drivers. Apple
includes many manufacturer's drivers with the
installation of Mac OS X, but Apple did not write
them. I do not know why Epson doesn't provide the
banner option you mentioned in your first post. Any
further statement would probably amount to
speculation and is not appropriate or permitted in
these forums. What I can state as fact is that many,
many software programs have more features in their
Windows versions than in their Mac releases.
[No one was able to answer my specific question so
I've made this one more general.]
As to your original question, I did a quick look on
VersionTracker and and found a freeware program Tiler that may be of help to you.

    Matt,
Yes I do know that Apple doesn't write the drivers, however, they still provide the protocols & interface for both platforms. So it's hard to figure why Windows has a driver with a banner option while a MAC doesn't.
Nevertheless Matt, I do appreciate the heads-up about Tiler. If it works out, it will be a God-send for what I do.
Thanks for taking the time to respond!

  • How do I convert color to black & white or grayscale in InDesign CS3?

I'm working with a number of publications which require some advertisements to be in grayscale or black and white. Short of changing all of my pictures to grayscale before I import, is there a way to manipulate the color within InDesign? And some of the images I am importing are PDFs, which are even harder to manipulate--is there a way to do this in InDesign at all?
    Thanks!

    >You can produce a grayscale PDF by printing to a Postscript file,
choosing Output > Color > Composite gray, and Distilling the PS file
(assuming you have the full version of Acrobat).
If you have a full version of Acrobat you can do that in one step by choosing AdobePDF as the printer. :)

  • Fail-over options for Standalone Print Server

Our organization recently set up 3 2012 r2 Print Servers to handle 3 separate sites.  Each printer server contains only the printers within the site - which makes each server a standalone print server.  I'm concern with the issue of not
having a fail-over plan in place, in the event one of my server should fail.  Does anyone have any fail-over suggestions.

    Hi Thomas,
If we want to create a clustered printer server, we need to created another print server in the same site.

  • Print preview option for Check printing (Tcode-fbz5)

Can any one tell me from where i can see the print preview option with out giving the check print every time.

    Hi,
In the Output Control block in FBZ5, check the Test printout Option, An overview list will be generated, click on that, it will take you to spool requese, there when u click on the document under Type, u can see the preview..
But the spool request created should be deleted manually if you dont want to take the printout, if you want the printout u can print it from the spool itself..
    Hope you get it..

  • Printing in black & white if desired?

    Greetings to all...
I have a Canon Pixma Multifunction printer..it's one of the 3 currently being offered by Apple. (It's the middle one pricewise)..
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to print in black and white when I don't want to waste color ink...I know in Windows there is an easily accessible "print in grayscale" option for most printers...
Is there not such a thing in OS X?
    Thanks for any assistance..

When you select File > Print, change the print menu to 'Quality & Media'. In here you should see 'Print Mode: Grayscale Printing'.

  • Printer regonizes Black/white page as color page

When we print a Word document to a PDF file with the Acrobat printer, pages that contain only Black/White information but with an image that looks as if it is Black/White, the printer recognizes the page as a color page. When we print this page with Word directly to the printer, the page is recognized as a Black/White page.
Are there color setting available which control the setting for gray scale images to be printed Black/White?

    Leo,
choose for default settings a joboption set which
    contains for output

Color Management: Leave Color Unchanged (!)

  • How do I print in Black & White?

I have a HP Officejet 6200 connected to my macbook pro running OS X. Is there any setting so I can manually override and print only in black & white. It seems to be printing only in color and I cannot seem to find a B&W manual override. This option is available when I connect the HP to a Windows XP machine, but not on the Mac. Any thoughts! I'm tired of replacing my color cartridge.
    Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to the forums!
In the Print dialog box, there is a drop-down menu that says Copies & Pages. Click that, and look for something relevant to your particular printer driver. For my HP color laser printer, it's Color Options > Print color as gray, for my Epson all-in-one it's Print Options > Color.
    Hope this helps...

  • How can I print in black/white only a document that has colors in the original?

How can I print in black/white only a document that has colors in its original. I don't need the print out to be in color, and I don't want to waste the color ink.

It depends on your printer and the application you are using.
In some applications you can choose color vs. greyscale/black&white when you do File > Print.   PowerPoint is one example of an application that allows this choice.
Otherwise, you can usually select greyscale at the time you print the document.  Do File > Print. In the resulting dialog box, there should be an item called Copies & Pages (in Word and other applications) or Preview (in Preview).  Click it.  In the resulting list, you should then see an option called Printer Features.  Click it.  Then you should see an option called Printout Mode.  Usually one of the modes is Greyscale or Black & White.  Select it.  Then Print.
This can also depend on your printer.  Exactly what make/model printer are you using?   And what kind of document are you trying to print (Word, PPT, JPEG, etc)?

  • 61 ink cartridge options for waterside decals

i am trying to do waterslide decals with an oficejet 4635
after they are printed, installed and clear coated they look great for about 4 months, but later the ink is bleading all over.
are there any ink options for this printer?
    are 61 cartriges pigment based?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The black 61 cartridges are pigmented, the color 61 cartridges are dye based.  For a water decal I would recommend only using black ink, the color will likely bleed as it gets wet.

It depends where the pdf is located. If in the Finder or in an attachment to

  • Please help! New PC with Windows 7, now won't give option for duplex Color Laserjet 2605dn

Hi everyone,  I'm hoping someone can help.  I have an HP Color Laserjet 2605dn, and after 4 years with a Dell laptop (and Windows XP) I had to get a new computer, this one with Windows 7.  When I plugged in the printer for the first time, it loaded drivers and seemed to work great - EXCEPT there is NO option for duplex printing in the effects or finishing areas.  So I went to the HP website and downloaded the Universal Print Driver, which DOES have duplex, but it won't print to the 2605dn printer!!!
I am ready to throw this out the window.  I don't recommend buying anything new while you have PMS...hahahaha.  Seriously, if someone could help, my stress level would drop dramatically.  I print a lot, and not doing it duplex would waste so much paper!
    Thanks in advance.

Enable the duplexer as described in the Vista / Windows 7 Duplex Troubleshooting Guide as follows:  go to Start, Devices and Printers, right click on the printer, Printer properties, Device settings, Installable Options, set the "Duplex unit for 2-sided printing" to installed, OK.
