No bold in mail?

Hi,
For several weeks now after the 10.6 update every time I select some text in a new email and press apple + b for bold nothing changes! Even when I go via the font menu and change it still the bold style is not shown. Im using standard fonts which work in other applications. I've tried reinstalling Mac Mail which hasn't helped.
Any ideas?

  • Did I turn off something? Cannot Bold text anymore...

    Hello all.
I was toying with Font Book, but pretty sure I didn't turn off any "non-essential" fonts, just turn off Japanese and Korean fonts which I don't need...
Then I realised inside Mail, as I was typing, my font is Lucida Grande, and I cannot bold my text...
Did I mess up anything somewhere?? Thanks

It does appear to be a font problem. I use an Adobe font, Palatino LT Std, for most of my correspondence instead of Apple's Palatino. Although Word, NowContact, and other applications don't have any trouble making this font bold, Mail will not. However, I can get Lucida Grande to go bold, but it won't do italics.
I have another font from Adobe that also will not do bold or italics.
I had an earlier version of Adobe Palatino that would go bold in Mail.

  • How do I add a new email account?

I installed Thunderbird today and have no email accounts set up yet. That is because by following the instructions in the help files, I was lead straight into a brick wall.
I can't find a way to insert a screenshot of the help page. It says to:
First open the Account Settings (In BOLD Tools|Account Settings). Each email or Newsgroup account
that has already been configured is listed on the left side of the Account Settings dialogue. These
accounts correspond to the top-level folders displayed in the "All Folders" list.
As said, I have no accounts set up yet and my "All-Folders" list is blank.
This is followed by a sample dialogue box showing the captions properly filled in:
    Your Name: jen Account
    Email Address: [email protected]
    Password: ********
    Checked Box Remember Password
    Cancel Continue
Click the (BOLD) Account Settings (End Bold) button and select (BOLD) Add Mail Account.
What I actually see is a bit different. Tools|Account Settings opens another dialogue box with one button at the bottom that says Account Actions. Clicking on that button shows a drop down menu of
    Add Mail Account...
    Add Chat Account...
    Add Feed Account...
    Add Other Account...
    Set as Default
    Remove Account
Unfortunately, only the Add Chat, Feed, and Other, choices bring up another option while clicking on the Add Mail Account does absolutely nothing and that is the brick wall I mentioned. I even had a friend who has been using Thunderbird for several years could not find a way to add an Email Account. Your help will be appreciated.

I almost responded by telling you I had already done all that but decided you are trying to help and the least I can do is give it a shot. I am fairly capable around computers but I have a friend who not only works in the computer industry but has been using Thunderbird for several years.
When my problem began, I called him and we connected using TeamViewer. I recently bought a Toshiba Qosmio laptop which would not allow me to get Windows 7, I had to take Windows 8.1 (Total garbage IMHO) My friend will not install W8 and is not familiar with it.
Anyway, he tried several things to no avail and then uninstalled TBird and the Maintenance Program and reinstalled both. The problem remained.
Today, I uninstalled both again and clicked on your link. I saw immediately that it was the same place I originally installed from. I reinstalled TBird with the Maintenance Program and clicked on File|New|Existing Mail Account... and saw the same as the screenshot I posted yesterday.
After clicking on Existing Mail Account... I saw the screenshot below with no place to enter anything about my Existing Mail Accounts. Being new to TBird is one thing, but I am amazed at the similarity of what both you and my friend had to say after experiencing that 'brick wall' I mentioned in my initial post here.
If you have any other advice or instructions, bring it on, I will try anything and I appreciate your attempt to help me here.

  • Why are e-mails (subject line) and ("to" line) still staying in bold print after they have been read?

After I read an e-mail, and after I hit the back space arrow, to look at my list of e-mails, the previously read e-mail still shows up in bold type. Usually when an e-mail is read, and you then look at your list of e-mails, the e-mails that have been read show up in light grey type so you can distinguish these e-mails from the ones that have not been read. Why is this happening? It is very difficult to remember which ones I have read when I am looking at over 100 unread e-mails.

Firefox is not an email program, so your problem depends on what site you are using for email. What site are you using?

  • Bold or Italics no longer works in Mail

When composing a message in Mail, using font style shortcuts no longer work. I've tried everything! For example, in the text of my email message, I select the word(s) that I want to bold, I press Cmd+B and it does nothing to the text. The font stays regular. Alternately, if I style it manually by choosing Format from the menu and then choosing Style, I see that it shows Bold as already being selected with a check mark, but the text still is not. This also applies to italicizing as well.
Thinking that I may have a corrupt Helvetica font, I changed the font to several others only to have the same problem. To test my corrupt theory one step further, I opened TextEdit, typed some text in the same fonts (ones that I know support bold and italics), press Cmd+B and Cmd+I and it works like a charm! No problems at all. I have beautifully bolded and italicized text. What gives?
Then I thought I would check my MacBook to see what folder Mail is reading the fonts from that I have chosen. The settings are exactly the same on my MacBook as they are on my iMac and both machines are happily running Leopard 10.5.5.
Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this or how to fix such an odd issue? Is reinstalling the Mail app possible or even worth considering? My only workaround is to type what I want bolded and/or italicized in TextEdit, then copy/paste it into my message, even though I can't remove the bold or italics once it's copied in. HELP!

NOW I KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS...--> THE FONT!!!
I always use monospaced fonts for email, by preference; it's easy to line up things. The problem is the font. Change the font to something other than what you're using, I just selected Arial and then the italic feature worked!!! Hope this helps!
It isn't about whether it's monospaced, it's about whether the font contains the style variants. Clearly Apple is taking the position of the typographic purist, which means they won't fake a bold or italic like in the old days, they only want to use it if it actually exists.

  • Mac Mail no longer allows me to make text bold

I'm using Lucida Grande as my default font, and since installing Snow Leopard the command>b no longer emboldens the type. Even if I go to format>style>bold it still doesn't work. Even if I go to format>show fonts and select the bold version of the font it still doesn't work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi chaps & chapettes
My system is running OS X 10.6.4 and Safari 5 (which is when the problems started) (and Mail 4.3)
I managed to sort this problem after tryin everything from:
    *Font Book:*
    - resolving duplicates
    - validating fonts (and deleting all the warning & corrupted fonts)
    *Linotype FontExplorer X*
    - Clean system font caches
    system/library/fonts
    - manually deleting Helvetica and Helvetica Neue
The solution that worked for me was to select all fonts in the FontBook application, and click EDIT>SELECT DUPLICATE FONTS
Once selected, I simply disabled all of them... hey presto I can now, use shortcut keys for Bold and Italics in Mail.
    Hope it helps
    Matt

  • Bold no longer works in Mail, after Leopard upgrade

Since upgrading to 10.5.1 -- and maybe to 10.5 -- I can no longer use bold style when composing a new email in Mail. Command-B and Format > Style > Bold have no effect. By contrast, italics and underline still work fine.

    Hi There
Yes, I'm having a similar problem in Mail too. Using Arial 12pt (standard for mail)
    For example:
If I key 'This is a test'. Then select it and either hit command B or go up to format and select bold, i get this: *is is es* How weird!... I'd like to hear from apple on this??
Just wondering is people with problems like this are using a third party font utility?... I'm using Suitcase. Don't know if this bears any relevance?
Something else relating to Mail in Leopard too...
In Tiger you used to see how 'big' your mail was you were creating to send to someone. Say you attached a 2mb pdf or pic.. it would come up in the bottom left of your mail saying the size. (ok this wasn't exactly accurate and it might say 2.3Mb, but it was useful becuase if you went over your outgoing mail server maximum size, it would show up in red.
This info/feature has been eliminated and forgotten in Leopard Mail!
    Why?... Does any one know?
    thanks
    Pete

  • Mail: how to get underlining and bold in toolbar?

I want to be able to access the basic word processing features as I reply to mail messages. I see that I can add a size font button to my toolbar. Is there a way to get underlining, bold, italic, etc... other than going into "fonts."
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I will figure out the keyboard shortcuts! I thought there might be a way to place the buttons on my screen for jiffy access. (like exists in any windows email program -- yikes!)

  • Compare Bold vs Curve and MAC mail

I'm getting a Blackberry tomorrow but I know very little about them. I have been a tried & true Palm user for years. I need to send multimedia texts/emails frequently and be able to check email/surf the web a LOT for work. I don't really know what 3G means but everyone seems to go on and on about it..and the Curve doesn't have it while the Bold does. considering it has WiFi..does this matter? I like the way the Curve operates better...but need to know it will be fast, reliable and not cost a fortune in "hidden costs" should I not be able to connect.
Also, I use mac.com. Will blackberry mail be able to work with this?
Sorry to sound so pedestrian about it but I wanted some good layman's terms advice.
    Cheers!!!

MY personal opinion, IF all things are equal to you between the two devices, get the 8900, as you have increased 128MB application memory, double that of other (and Bold) devices.

  • Mail Subject Line BOLD

I don't remember the defaults for mail to have every subject line bold in my inboxes. I have checked "Rules" and I don't have anything to due with bold. Is this standard to have every subject line bold or can I somehow turn this off? It's pretty annoying. Thanks

It is only bold if the message hasn't been opened from within Mail. You can select as many bold messages at once and mark them as unread to make them no longer bold.

  • Lion mail doesn't allow shortcuts for bold and italics.

    Hi,
I've come across this problem in which Lion mail doesn't allow shortcuts for bold and italics. I try pressing the short cut for Command + B or Command + I
but it does not affect the text at all. I have to move my cursor to the Bold or Italic icon to change a particular word's form.
Of note, Command + U allows me to underline a word just fine. I also write my mail in the default Helvetica, and in size 12.
Anyone know of a solution? I'm pretty sure it's just a glitch, but it's become a great annoyance for me.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Mail created in Sapscript not appear bold, font, image, ...only simple text

    Hi to all,
I have created a form in Sapscript. This forms contains a image, box, text with bold, font Verdana, ...
If I print this form this appears correctly (with image, box, ....) but if i sent to mail only appear the text without format.
I need that the mail shows the image (not attached), box, etc.
    Can anybody helps me?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I've posted about markups in emails recently....problem is that your output form Scrip doesn't contain the HTML tags.  So, when email is opened, the user defaults (Outlook??) are used.
We work around this problem by creating email content that contains the markups that we need... But, we do it from ABAP, not SAPScript, so that's no help to you...
