No Boolean searches for Endnote references in Pages?

Dear All,
I use Endnote heavily in technical papers and grants and have tried the new Pages 09 with Endnote X2. I really like Pages since it handles integrated text and graphics so well whereas Word really does not do that well. However,the Endnote search function in Pages appears to be quite limited, as far as i can tell, to a single word or phrase. It does not appear possible to search, for instance, for an author and a word in the title to narrow the search results. So if I want to search my Endnote database of references for all papers with "Smith" as author and that also contain "cholesterol" in the title I can't do it. Am I correct in assuming that this can't be done with the Pages search engine? Also, there does not appear to be a way to insert references from Endnote directly, so I can't do the search in Endnote and insert the reference into Pages. I would love to be wrong. You are correct that there doesn't seem to be a Boolean search function from within Pages.
In Endnote X2 itself, if you use the quick search function you can search author & title or author & title & keyword etcetera. For example, I put in Shakespeare as author and Hamlet as title and came up with two references in my library. I then generated a subject bibliography and inserted that into the Pages document. It is also possible to save references into Groups. There is quite a lot on managing Groups and sub-groups in the Endnote help menu.

Searching for sites not web pages

This is not really a Safari question, although I'm using Safari as my browser. If there is a more relevant forum, please let me know.
I want to search for sites, not pages, that contain certain keywords. I'm looking for a variety of items and I want to find a site that sells all of them, not just one or two. So I envisage typing in the name of items A, B, C, D, W, X and up come web sites that contain all of those words.
Is this possible?

Try the help pages for your favorite search engine. Quotation marks and logical operators might help you structure your query. You might also try entering your search terms into a TextEdit document before you past them into your search engine, so you can keep track of the queries that are more successful and build on those.

Of course there are many generalized and specialized search engines available, so if one doesn't do the trick, keep trying others!
Just from practical experience, if you are looking for mass-produced brand new items normally distributed through retail channels and cannot find all of them on Amazon.com, you are probably looking for such specialized or costly items, that one vendor probably won't carry them all.
Some manufacturers still try to sell items through "authorized dealers only": computers, cameras, electronic components, jewelry, exotic cars, weapons, and 'collectibles', so you might not have much success if your search involves any or all of them.

Searching for Add-ons gives page with blocked text.

I search Add-ons and get a list. If I click the word "more" next to any item I get a page about that item.
However, most of the links on that page are not clickable and I cannot cut and paste the text of the links. I cannot even access the page source.
I assume this is a bug - Is there any way round it?

Do you mean the More link next to an installed extension on the about:addons page (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)?
That are XUL pages (view-source:about:addons) and thus behave differently regarding what you can do and only links that appear in blue can be clicked on those page.

Searching for Staic VI References

I recently found out about a neat way to open vi references in labview by using the static vi reference. Today I tried to open an app in 8.5 and couldn't because of a whole bunch of bugs and problems with labview 8.5. Then when I looked at the 8.5 known issues page I saw:

The file might have been moved or deleted, or the file path might be incorrectly formatted for the operating system. For example, use \ as path separators on Windows, : on Mac OS, and / on Linux. Verify that the path is correct using the command prompt or file explorer."
Workaround—Don't use static VI referece, instead use the Open VI ref prim, passing it the the Current VI path constant.

Now I am very worried. If this didn't work right in labview 8.5, does it work right in labview 8.2? Is there a way to search for static references in a project? I realize now that it is a new feature and I should have never used it. But now I can't rememeber all teh places I used it. Any suggestions?

I got 99 problems but 8.6 ain't one.

That sounds like one of my bugs and I probably found it in LV 8.2.
If you open all of the top level VI's, then serach all of the VI's in memory, it should show up.

Trouble searching for files in Pages

For some reason, when I go to open a file in Pages '09, some of them will not show up if I type in the file name in the search in the upper right hand corner of the window. I know for 100% certainty I have the file name correct - to make sure it is a search problem and not my memory having issues I would search for a file and while looking at the file name, type it in... and I would get 0 search results. I clicked for it to search by file name. The files it does not seem to be able to recognize are file names with Japanese as part of the file name that were saved using my Mac (MacBook Pro - OS X 10.6.8). Files with Japanese in the file name saved on windows computers and transfered via my flashdrive have no issues being found. I can open the files, so that is not the problem. And, if I scroll through all the files I can find it. The problem is that sometimes I don't remember the full file name - especially which word I put first - so having to scroll through all my files to find the one I want is rather annoying. I would prefer to be able to search for any of my Pages files. Is there anyway to fix this? Or is the Pages search just not made to be compatible with any language other than English? (I am not sure if it is relavant, but if I search for the files via Spotlight, I can find them using the English or Japanese portion of the file name. Even though Finder does not allow me to use the Japanese portion of the file name in a search, the files do show up if I use the English portion of the file name.)
Any help of why this problem exists and if there is any way to fix would be very much appreciated.

The Pages window? I can't see a search box.
Do you mean Spotlight? (The magnifying glass icon?)
System Preferences > Personal > Spotlight > Search Results.
Make sure there is a tick next to Documents.
Spotlight will find file names (partial or complete match) or a word or phrase within files.

Next time you open a document, drag the Word icon from the dock and drag it right back in again. It will stay there.

How to perform Boolean Search?

I have an indexed folder on my hard drive that I frequently search using Acrobat 9 (standard). I am able to use it for single-word searches only and I want to be able to input more intricate searches as Acrobat teases me that are possible. I understand boolean principles but I am unable to apply it in my searches-nothing works!. Can someone who is knowlegable about this aspect of Acrobat please give me a good reference specifically for Acrobat searches (not general boolean searches) for advanced index searches, and also as an example, how would I input the following search: I want to find the words"Material" AND "Disposition" separated by no more than 50 characters.

For the specific example:
Open Advanced Search (Edit->Advanced Search)
Click "Show more options" at the bottom of the dialog
In the advanced UI, select the folder where your files are
In results containing, select match all words
In the options, select Proximity
The default for Proximity searches in 900 words. You can change that in Edit>Preferences>Search>Range of words for proximity searches.

Additional appearance option for cross-references

There should be a way to leave off the "preamble" part ("Figure", "Table", etc) of a paragraph number in a cross-reference. So instead of writing things like "As shown in Figure 5 through Figure 9...." we could write "As shown in Figures 5 through 9....." i.e. the cross refence would just be the numbers 5 and 9 without the word "Figure" that ID4 now considers to be part of the paragraph number.
A viable alternative would be to allow paragraph numbers to appear in the interior of the paragraph rather than only at the beginning. Then figure captions could be written with the word "Figure" as part of the text, followed by the purely numeric figure number, then followed by more text comprising the rest of the caption. Then a crossreference would only pick up the number without the word "Figure".

Exactly. They're deselected, thus my question. So to get back to my original post, it looks like the designers of CS4, even though they have provided 19,762 options for searching (plus those in cross-references), none of the options will allow you to start at the front of a book and find each cross-reference in turn to check that they jump to the right page.
Sometimes I think that the designers of InDesign really haven't got into the spirt of Book. They've offered it, but half-heartedly. But that will be the subject of another post.
So, I'll repeat my question: is it possible to search for cross-references?

Wilcard Boolean Searches

Can Acro X Pro do "wildcard" Boolean searches for multiple PDF's in a folder? Eg: find every date not 05/06/2012?

that I want to find. But now my requirements have changed to needing to find every date in the pile of PDF's
that ARE NOT a single certain date. Eg: I need to find every date in a document that "isn't" 01/01/2012.
I've tried many combo's of characters inc. Boolean " ? " and " * " to no effect. Eg: ??/??/???? not 01/01/2012.
I've also tried the "additional criteria" section saying "Is not".

EndNote - Pages integration - Boolean searches option?

I'd very much like to move from Word to Pages 9.0, but don't think I can afford to make the change for several reasons. The main one is that I have nearly 3,500 references in my EndNote X2 library and find that the search window within Pages is too unwieldy to use. When I search for a term, I frequently retrieve more than 100 references and am unable to quickly scan them all to find the one I'm after. I'd like to use AND, OR NOT terms, but the search window does not handle this.
In addition, it would be useful to be able to read the abstact associated with each reference to check that it is the correct one.
Both these approaches work well when switching between EndNote and Word and make life so much easier that I'm still prepared to put up with the crashing and various bugs that plague EndNote/Word.
Has EndNote X3 fixed this? Or is this something that needs taking care of by Apple?

In Pages document, how do I search for word and view its frequency and page numbers in a sidebar?

I have a long document and I want to be able to search for certain key words and phrases, and then see how many times they appear in the document and exactly where. How do I conduct this sort of search and viewing? In the past, in Pages and Word, I've been able to view my "finds" in a sidebar but I can't figure out how to activate that service anymore.

Here is a word frequency concordance Automator Service that works in both versions of Pages. It does not present a page number reference. It is by descending count, and alphabetically, within the repetitive counts as shown in the image here. In any document, you select the text to process, then Menu > Application Name > Services > Frequency. The Service will open TextEdit with the n-pages of scrollable results. It is 16 pt Helvetica Neue for legibility.

Launch /Applications/Automator and choose New Document, then click the Service icon, and then select the Choose button.
On the left, you will have a list of Libraries from which to choose workflow items. Find Library > Utilities. In the adjacent column, locate the Run Applescript workflow. Click on it, then drag and drop it in the large workflow window to your right.
At the top, you can select Service receives text in any application. Leave Output replaces selected text unchecked.
In your Run AppleScript workflow window, you will see AppleScript boilerplate. Click on it and press command+A, then backspace to delete this content. Copy and paste the above code into this Run AppleScript workflow window. Press the Run button in Automator's upper right corner. If (and it should) a TextEdit window pops up, you are good, and you want to press File > Save. A dialog box will pop-up where you can name your Service. I called my Frequency, you may wish to call it something else. Once you have save it, you can exit Automator. Services are deposited in yourlogin directory/Library/Services.
If you have a Pages document open with text, either select it, or command+a to select the entire document. Now, you select your Service via Pages > Services > Frequency. This will now pop-up a new TextEdit document with the results. If you want to save this new document, you must use option+File to Save as...

Search for master page usage; better way to use master pages?

I am using Frame 9. I have my files set to always have an even number of pages. For chapters where the text ends on a right-hand page, I assign a custom master page to the final left-hand page -- this custom master page has our logo on it. However, because my files have a lot of conditional text (3 different versions of the publication get generated from the same source files), the lengths of the chapters often change when switching between different conditional versions. So for example, for version 1, I assign the custom master page to the last page of the chapter, which is page 28. Then when I switch my conditional text settings to show version 2, the chapter is now 36 pages long, but my custom master page is still applied to page 28. I have to remove it from page 28 and reassign it to page 38. Here are my questions:
1) Is there a way to search for pages that have a specific master page applied? I hoped that I could generate a list of master page usage using the Special > List Of > References option, but apparently not.
2) Is there any way to get Frame to automatically assign my custom master page when it is appropriate, rather than doing it by hand for each conditional version of each chapter?

To identify master pages that control pages in body page view, create an identifier on each master page, as you'd create a watermark with text in a background text frame. Control its visibility with either a condition, or by assigning it a color that's invisible in a color view.

Sharepoint 2013 - Search for link names on a single page

I am messing around with SP13 and trying to get my search result web part to only search for link names and display all results.
I have created the search source to point at the sub site. If I search for part of a link name it will list all links in one long row as a single result.
Example: One single page contains all links. Each link points to a .aspx page. The search source is pointing at this page and it can display results but only as a single result containing all links as one line of text.
Say I have 1000+ links of which 50 has names such as Link1-Item1-Basket1, Link1-Item1-Basket2 up to Link1-Item1-Basket50.
When I search for Link1-Item1 I would like my search results to display 50 results as 50 individual links.
Is this possible?

Hi,
Yes, you can format the search results as you expected. But you have to create a custom display template to format your results such as extract the links from each results and display it as separate link.
Once display template created you have to map the display template to your search results web part.
