Turn on system everything lights up and comes on as far as fans and the 4lights on the MB.  No sounds or beeps and nothing on the screen. The HDD light does not blink but is on as a static light.. a red light on the front of the case, could just be the power light.. i'm not sure really. I reset the CMOS, I tried it with ONLY 1 ram stick and bare essential hardware(mouse, keyboard, monitor)... still same thing.
Ideas ?

Well i just went over everything again and noticed the big fan on the Powersupply was not running.... so i'm suspecting a bad power supply. Is it possible for the PS to have fans & lights on, on t he motherboard yet not be bad and not power the system? the case lights up and fans turn on(in case) but the system doesnt boot.
Would this be the powersupply since the Fan on the PS is not on ?
Gonna return it and try a different brand.
Thats where i would start as it seems a power supply problem

  • G5 PPC Won't boot After New Drives, Battery & RAM Installed

Since installing new boot drive, new battery, and additional matched RAM, when I start up I'm expecting DVD drawer to open automatically for installation of MAC OS, but all I get is a screen icon of a Mac folder, without a question mark. Tried starting up again and this time got black screen. I popped DVD drawer open and inserted MAC OS Leopard disc then restarted once while holding down C key. Nothing, but after a few minutes fans went into overdrive. Restarted again without holding C key, got black screen. I really can't hear the install disc spinning either.
I've replaced boot drive a long time ago and didn't have this problem. Wondering if RAM or new battery caused anything to go wrong. I had a grounding strap on during all my internal work on the mac.
    Thanks for any suggestions
    Steve

    Thanks for the reply.
Don't see logic in booting without either optical or HD as I can't go forward without both online. Hard drive is unformatted. But one thing: I had pulled the jumper to make it SATA 3 for better performance. Maybe replace jumper?
Battery polarity is correct, positive to the left. I even reinserted the old battery to see if that made a difference.
Are you suggesting reseating all the RAM or just the new RAM? I'll try removing the new RAM.
Tried resetting PRAM but system never chimed a second time, system didn't recognize the command for it.
Won't boot up in OF mode.
Sometimes boots to black screen, other times to white screen. Sometimes the folder icon, sometimes not.
In every case system will go into fan overdrive after about 4 minutes.

  • Can't Boot After New HD + Time Machine Restore

So a couple days ago my 27" iMac running Snow Leopard started making some weird noises and stalling out. Annoyed, I talked for a couple hours with apple tech support which eventually lead me to run an Apple Hardware Test. This test returned the error
"Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.
    4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)"
I scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar, and they replaced the hard drive.
After that I got it home and did a System restore from my time machine backup. It finished fine, but when I restarted it got stuck on the grey apple screen with the spinning dial thing.
I called apple back and they had me do a couple things like repair disk, verify disk, and one person had me reboot into this command line mode and type some stuff in. Nothing worked. After that They had me try to reinstall the OS first from archive, and next by erasing the hard drive and doing it. Both times the install fails with a big yellow exclamation point saying that it couldn't install support files and the OS couldn't be installed.
Any ideas how to fix this?
I'm currently trying to restore from my time machine backup again, but I'm not hopeful.

Here's what I got - apologies for any formatting peculiarities.
The problem: 10.6.6 mac won't boot after time machine restore to disk.
Further symptoms: Booting with Command-v shows several errors: usually blued and loginwindow collapse with errors from launchd. Errors will be of the style "dyld: Symbol not found: CSSMOID_APPLE_TP_MACAPPSTORERECEIPT" and other CommerceKit / CommerceCore framework errors.
A solution: Your Framework Security library may be an older version (possible cause with Time Machine below). The easiest way to fix this is to find another, working 10.6.6 Mac, and update the Security library on the broken machine.
    Identifying if you're affected:
    1) Boot the broken machine into "target" mode - hold "Command-t" during boot until the [Firewire|http://itunesu.utah.edu/terms/images/Firewire_Icon.png] icon appears.
    2) Connect the broken machine to the working 10.6.6 machine with a firewire cable.
    3) On the working machine, the disk of the broken machine should mount.
    4) Open Terminal
    5) Run "ls /Volumes" - the name of disk you mounted should be there (in this example, we'll use "Macintosh HD".)
    6) Typing in the path of the broken machine, run:
    <pre>
    nm /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
    </pre>
(this does a dump of the library, looking for the version value)
If this comes back with the value 22457 (or less?), your Mac is not booting because it does not have the updated version of the Security library, which is required in 10.6.6 since Snow Leopard added the Appstore / Commerce framework.
    Fixing if you're affected:
    1) First, make sure the working 10.6.6 Mac has a correct version of the framework:
    <pre>
    nm /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
    </pre>
For 10.6.6, this should be at least "22458"
    2) *Be extremely careful at this point* - Make sure on the mounted disk (not the machine you are working on!) run the following
    <pre></pre>
2a) Make a backup of the broken library
    <pre>
    mkdir /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
    cp /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
    </pre>
2b) Copy the working version over the non-working version:
    <pre>
    cp /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security
    </pre>
    3) Eject the mounted disk from the working Mac, disconnect the firewire cable, and reboot the "broken" Mac. It should come up.
If it doesn't, you have problem(s) that are probably outside the scope of this. I'd also suggest restoring your original security library that you saved off.
    Suspected cause:
It appears that Time Machine never recorded the change to the Security library after the update. If the library hadn't changed, the machine should have failed to boot like it did after restore the moment a 10.6.6 update was applied.
Inspecting the contents of my Time Machine backups before and after updating shows that Time Machine never updated the Security Framework library - why is still not 100% determined, but restoring from it is definitely broken. Combing through the backup databases on my Time Machine disk:
    (I upgraded to 10.6.6 on January 6)

  • Stuck on boot after New Installation

    Hi!
I've removed Ubuntu and installed Arch and it can't boot after installation. I hangs up after:
    /dev/sda1: clean, 31810/2444624 files, 407160/9770158 blocks
I have normal BIOS(not UEFI), and two discs: /dev/sda is SSD with Arch and /dev/sdb is HDD with Windows 8...

Remove quiet from the kernel command line so that you get as much information as possible.
You only have the one partition for Arch, right? The fstab is complete?
Look in /etc/default/grub and select the most basic, debugging-friendly options you can. E.g. make sure recovery entries are enabled etc.

  • NF 750-G55 Wont boot on new build

    Hi guys
OK, Just assembled my new PC in its bare bones state.  I'm using tested DDR3 corsair 2x2GB 1600MHz, a brand new phenom 955 and a well used and reliable 650 watt Ernmax? PSU
I'm getting no action on start up, just the 4 blue LED lights.  The CPU fan slows after a while, is this normal on this board even if it hasn't booted?
I have checked the output from HDMI DVI and VGA.  Also all 4 LED's stay illuminated.
How can I check what bios edition my mobo shipped with?  There is a very suspicious code that looks like the bios version on the side of the box it reads 911-7578-002
The mobo is in an empty case fastened in.  It has the atx connector securely fastened, and the 4 pin power connector.  I have reseated the ram a few times and the CPU once.
Any ideas welcome, as my old PC is now sold off over eBay So im desperate to get going again

  • IMac taking long time to boot after new hard drive installed. Help?

I recently had a new hard drive installed on my iMac (running Snow Leopard). After the intall all was well, but I couldn't get my screensaver to work. Erroneously thinking it was missing, I reinstalled it and ended up with two screen saver folders in the system files. Now when I turn on the Mac, I get a white screen for several seconds (close to a minute) before the system shows me the Apple logo and then boots. I'm concerned about this. Did my copying the screen saver cause the problem? Should I reinstall my system software?  I was planning to upgrade to Mountain Lion anyway. Will that fix the problem? Any suggestions appreciated.

Restart in Safe Boot Mode (hold the left Shift key as soon as you restart your computer and hold it until the Apple logo appears). Once it gets to the desktop you can restart normally. Safe Mode  serves a number of purposes and one of them is to delete/trim temporary files that might be causing boot problems. There's no guarantee this will improve your startup time but it will do no harm and I have seen computers restart more quickly after a Safe Boot.

  • Mac Pro refuses to boot after new drive instalation...

    Hi
Could anyone shed a bit of light on my problem - Ive just got a new 500gb seagate drive, - when I load it up in order to format, im faced with a blank screen, and os x refuses to even think about booting up - there is also an odd click which Im guessing is the boot drive trying to start.
The new drive slots into place fine, and I made sure I was earthed out before touching it...
When the new drive is taken out, the system starts up without a hitch.
Do I have a duff drive? - or am I missing something blindingly obvious?
    Thanks for any help
    Maxine.

    Hi,
Funny that I saw this message, I am the person that had the exact same problem on the 20th of December.
After trying to install the HD, I had the problem as well. I ended up taking the computer in to my local Apple store, and they kept the Mac Pro.
It is now January 5th and I still do not have the system. Called them an hour ago and they said that the part (they didn't mention what it was) was on BACKORDER, so they had to decide if they were going to wait for the part or give me a brand new system. Hmmmm.... Could this be a NEW hidden problem for the Mac Pro now?
I wanted to purchase an iMac, but was afraid of the lock-up issues. I am starting to regreat my choice and wish I had got an iMac, at least I would have some kind of file server for my network
All I can suggest is to take it in to your local Apple store and let them check it, and then ask if they could fix it right then, or you two could have a system that's not able to be workable.

  • Can't boot after new OS update!  Please help!

I just did the auto update for the new OS. My mac froze during the install. After several minutes I did a hard reset. Now it won't boot up at all. After several minutes on a gray screen the fans kick in extremely hard, but nothing happens on the screen.
I would hate to have to reinstall the OS, any advice would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to discussions:
Try to boot from your install disc and then install the combo update from Apple's web page,

  • Failure to boot after new hard drive install

trying to resurrect old graphite 466mh firewire clamshell.
It was running tiger fine, had a problem charging it so sat in basement for a year. Turns out it was powercord, replaced, and now working again. Decided to replace the 10G hard drive, using the fixit site manual. Installed a Toshiba 80G drive, am now unable to boot from tiger cd's (not dvd) while holding down c-key. Any suggestions? By the way, have access to other firewire iBook running tiger but don't know how to boot from that. Any help much appreciated!

The reason for not being able to start
via 'C' on you new drive may be because it is
assigned (jumpered) incorrectly as the 'Slave' rather
    than the 'Master'.
Of course! it seems so obvious now
    you've said it.
    Actually it's almost
certainly best that this gets done sooner rather than
later or it is complicate any future trouble

OK gentlemen (thanks for responding). So I hook up the 2 iBooks, put the tiger cd in my wife's iBook and start them up. On the screen of the ibook I'm trying to resurrect my wife's desktop appears. I go into disk utility, it scans the systems and the only icons that appear are my wife's hard drive and the new (untitled) hard drive. No sign of the tiger installation cd. I can restore my wife's hard disk onto the untitled drive and end up with a working system. I know little about slaves and masters (I don't get out much)- how do I assign the new drive?

  • H9-1130 Won't boot after new graphics card install.

    Alright, here we go.
I recently bought an EVGA 750 superclocked for my PC. The first time I installed it, I got a black screen. Popped in the old GPU and checked the BIOS. Ended up updating it.
Now, here's the interesting part: I install the EVGA back into my computer, and it ends up getting stuck at the HP boot logo. I went to another thread on this site regarding pretty much the same question, and the people there recommended checking the PSU and the graphics card. Well, I brought my GPU to a friend to plug into his computer, and it booted up just fine. I did check my PSU aswell, and all seems to be fine there. So, yeah, any suggestions on how I can get this card to work on my mobo?
     SPECS:
    AMD FX-8120
    (old) GPU: AMD 7670
(new) GPU: EVGA 750 1gb Superclocked
    PSU: HP 650w
    mobo: Gigabyte 2AC8

    Hi,
I have no suggestions on how to get the EVGA GTX 750 to work in a HP PC that has a legacy version 7 bios (non-UEFI).
I do have one suggestion: Contact EVGA and ask for a remendy other than replacing the motherboard or buying a new PC. Don't expect HP to provide a version 8 UEFI BIOS update for your PC.  HP didn't start producing UEFI BIOS consumer desktop PCs until the middle of October 2012.
You might try Sapphire as they offer both NVIDIA and AMD graphics that are designated UEFI and those that are not designated UEFI.  You need a card that is non-UEFI designated.

  • HP DV6700 shuts off on boot after new LCD installation

    Hello.
I have had this HPdv6700 for about a year and a half.  I just last wednesday installed a new LCD to replace one that I cracked by being too rough with the lid.
The new LCD worked fine, but at my desk I always use an external monitor and extend the desktop.  I plugged in the external monitor to the VGA, and when I tried to switch over to "extend desktop" the screens flashed as usual, but the laptop just turned immediatly off.
It now immediately turns off when it tries to power up the installed LCD, right when all the HP stuff should come up when the screen initially turns on.  If I unplug the LCD, and only plug in the VGA, it boots up, it only shuts off with the new LCD.
My guess is that my video card is fried, just enough where it still sort of works, but only when used with a monitor that has its own power supply.  Doesn't make sense really, usually when they go, thats it, they're gone.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 with the AMD Turion X2 64 bit processor and have the Nvidia Geforce 7150m graphics card.
Event logs in Administrative tools show nothing, as the PC shut off too fast to make a log.
Everything appears to be installed correctly on this, but this seriously seems like some kind of power drain, any ideas about what I'm missing here?

Oh, and can the problem be a faulty LCD that draws too much power, or maybe my inverter is fried?  I really doubt its the graphics card, and I don't want to buy new parts just to "experiment"

  • Getting java.lang.LinkageError: duplicate class definition after new build

I few weeks ago I started getting :
java.lang.LinkageError: duplicate class definition every time I tried to access a web app that just got a fresh ANT build to the the web server. The error sites the application's primary servlet class. When I bump the server on I-Planet (6.0), the error goes away. I cannot find a duplicate class anywhere, though. I'm stumped.

  • Powermac G5 won't boot after new PSU replaced- says no ram installed!!!

I've recently inherited a friends old Powermac DP 2.0 G5 after it died a death. After some testing I diagnosed that that PSU had died in it- something that seems quite common.
Having found some detailed instructions online, I sourced a replacement PSU and set about replacing it. All went well with no major problems. I put everything back together and then powered the machine on. The fans whirled to life but there was no video out. I then noticed that the power light was flashing twice and then a break.
I checked on Apple's website and it was saying that 2 flashed is no ram installed. Yet there are 4 sticks installed - surely these all can't be dead? Has anyone got any words of advice? I'll be gutted if it's the logic board as the replacement PSU was really expensive....help!

Could be the RAM, sockets, Logic board, only way to tell is to swap them out.

  • Problems with re-boot after new OS X update

I installed the OS X update this past weekend on my MacBook Pro. Since then, my computer freezes and has benn running uncharacteristically slow. Re-boot takes nearly 30 minutes and the computer gets really warm. I've had this computer for 2.5 years and have never had a problem with it until now. I'm in grad school and this computer is my lifeline at the moment. I've tried running disk verify but it hasn't really worked. Please help!

I have the same problem - I'm afriad it seems to be yet another Apple "issue" which they pretend doesn't happen.  There's a thread here on it - Re: USB keyboard doesn't work on Thunderbolt display .
I haven't tried their solution, though I would be surprised if it worked!

Hi everyone from the Build 2015 conference happening right now in San Francisco! If you haven’t already, check out Terry’s blog post about all the Windows 10 announcements we made today. If you’re at Build this week or at Ignite in Chicago next week – keep your eye out for me and say hello!
Today we have a new build available to both the Fast and Slow ring for Windows Insiders (that means we’ll have ISOs available too for those of you who like a clean install.) With this build we continue to evolve the features and design for Windows 10, and you’ll see a lot of subtle changes and improvements, many of which were influenced directly by Windows Insiders. One of those changes is the reintroduction of some Aero Glass elements in the UI, but there are many more things throughout the product as well. We continue to use your feedback directly day to day in how our feature teams operate, and we hope that Windows 10 will be the best version of Windows yet because you had a direct hand in its creation.
One other subtle change that you’ll notice is that we’ve changed how we talk about the builds from “Technical Preview” to “Insider Preview” to reflect the importance of the Windows Insider community in how we’re building Windows 10.
And speaking of Windows Insiders, we were super excited to host the 10 winners of our Windows Insiders to Campus contest in Redmond last week and hear their thoughts on the program and the product. We’ll share more on that soon.
Here is what’s newSome of the things that Joe demoed on stage earlier today during the Build keynote are not yet included in this build and will be in future builds. But we still have a bunch of new stuff for you to check out!
General UX improvements: We made a bunch of UX improvements with the last build and you’ll see even more in this build. For example, you’ll notice a new Live Tile animation for Start in addition to in addition to some performance and stability improvements for Live Tiles.
We’ve done work to better support high DPI displays. And we know many Windows Insiders are running multi-mon setups – often with 2 monitors with different DPI. You will start to see some work we’re doing to make sure core UX components in Windows scale correctly on both your monitors so things look nice regardless of DPI.
We’ve also heard loud in clear that many Windows Insiders want to see Aero Glass from Windows 7 make a comeback. We’ve been working out how to satisfy this request, and are trying some things out with this build to see how you like them. We’re running a little A/B test with this build. 50% of you will normal transparency on the Start menu and taskbar while the other 50% will see a blur effect on the Start menu and taskbar (like frosted glass). If Windows Insiders really like the blur effect, we will add it to more areas and even consider making it the default instead of standard transparency. Which one did you get? Send us feedback about it via the Windows Feedback app!
Even more improvements to Continuum: We’re continuing to make Continuum better and invest in a simplified taskbar. Additionally when you close an application in Tablet mode, we take you back to the Start screen instead of the desktop as you would expect when using a tablet. You will see general polish on snapping, and the shared divider between two snapped windows now let’s you adjust the size.
Multi-tasking improvements: We’re continuing to refine and complete our mulit-tasking experience with Windows 10. Check out Alt-Tab, Task-View, and Snap Assist. Snap Assist also now supports the ability to close a window during Snap Assist.
New default Windows sounds: We’ve heard a lot of feedback from people that they want some fresh system sounds for Windows 10. Check them out and let us know what you think.
Visual refresh for Cortana: You will see a visual refresh for Cortana in this build that makes the experience feel more ingrained into the overall Windows experience. Start and Cortana are now more tightly integrated. As you start to search for an app from within Start, Cortana can seamlessly take over and bring back the right result. The new Windows split view control has been added to Cortana’s left rail, offering quick access to key Cortana functionality like the Notebook, Reminders or Feedback on how Cortana’s doing. This split view control helps anchor Cortana to the rest of the Windows UI and provides navigation consistent with many other Windows first party applications.
New experiences in Cortana: We are making available some new and updated experiences in Cortana powered by Bing Instant Answers. Cortana will aim to answer your question while you’re still typing. Here are a few questions you can try:
    Weather – “Seattle Weather”
    Finance – “MSFT stock”
    Dictionary – “define astounding”
    Calculator – “48*92”
    Flight Status – “UA 238”
Reference – “how tall is brad pitt”
    Showtimes – “movies near me”
Tech Help – “memory in my computer”
Time Zone – “time in London”
Unit Conversion – “42 ft in meters”
Chit Chat – “tell me a joke”
Updates for the Music and Video Preview apps: We’ve also shipped updates to these apps. The Music Preview app (3.6.999.0) has some UX improvements including a more immersive Now Playing experience with a true full screen mode. With the Video Preview app (3.6.999.0) – you can download movies, TV shows, and TV seasons and check progress, pause, resume, cancel the download. You can also download, delete, and even re-download videos as many times as you want on up to three devices (we’re planning to increase the number of devices you can download content too!). Closed captioning for purchased content now appears. You will see a list of new features when you first launch these app after each update!
Xbox app April 2015 update: The Xbox app for Windows 10 has been updated (your version number should be 4.4.9014.0 or higher) with new features like Game DVR for PC games, screenshots, a Live Tile, user profiles, and real-name sharing. Oh and the drivers for Xbox controllers are now included with Windows 10, so you no longer have to download and install controller drivers on Windows 10. For more on this month’s Xbox app for Windows 10 update as well as the new Avatars app – read this blog post.
Windows Store Beta improvements: We’re excited about delivering a single unified Store experience in Windows 10 which we’re talking more about this week at Build. We’ve made some improvements to the Store Beta which is now a blue tile instead of grey. Xbox Live games should be working and so are in-app purchases. Apps you purchased on a PC running Windows 8.1 will now show up in the Store Beta on Windows 10 as owned (and vice-versa). We’re also expanding the Store Beta from 41 markets with the addition of these new markets: Afghanistan, Åland Islands, Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola, Anguilla, Antarctica, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Aruba, Azerbaijan, The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bermuda, Bahrain, Bhutan, Bolivia, Bonaire, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Bouvet Island, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Iceland, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Malta, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Oman, Panama, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Venezuela.
Discovering features and apps in Windows 10: We are investing in easy “bite-sized” learning and discovery experiences so that users can get more out of Windows 10. This ranges from tips and tricks on the Lock screen, to helping users discover high quality apps through Start, the Lock screen and Cortana. Be confident that you won’t miss out on new features and enjoy the ease of having high quality apps curated for you. It’s optional, and if anything doesn’t strike your fancy, you can provide feedback directly, such as whether you like an image or an app. These new experiences will be rolling out over time, so you may not see them in your market yet.
Here are some things we fixed
You can now launch Win32 (desktop) apps from the Start menu again. Sorry about this bug!
You should be able to download music in the Xbox Music and Music Preview apps.
When you minimize an app playing audio, it should continue playing in the background.
    Here are some known issues
Developers cannot enable Developer Mode in the Settings app for installing and testing apps on this build. We’ll enable this in an upcoming build. In the meantime, you will need enable your device for development using the Group Policy Editor.
There is an issue in this build preventing some games from playing in full screen mode. We’re working to get a fix out via WU as soon as possible.
The People app continues to crash. We’re planning to release an update for the People app through the Store Beta that fixes this.
We hope you’ll agree that 10074 has some nice improvements and is another step forward towards delivering a great Windows 10 release. Please put it through the paces and keep sending us feedback on the things that you like and the things you want us to keep working on using the Windows Feedback app. I hope that you’ll also download the development tools released at Build and will build some terrific Universal Windows apps as well!
    Thanks,
    g
