No boot from OS X install DVD 10.6.3?

Hello,
I want to perform a clean intallation with my MacBook Pro 6.2 but its not possible to boot (pressing C) from the new retail OS X Snow Leopard DVD 10.6.3 (I've lost the original DVD).
After a few seconds the MacBook freezes with the apple on grey background.
Is this a known problem? What can I do?

Hey FWeidenbach, were you finally able to reinstall??? Im experiencing the same problem and im getting very frustrated., I already called Apple and by my experience with them, this is the worst Tech Support i ever received. Besides that, i just bouth a 3000 USD MacBook Pro, i cannot reinstall the OS, and they are asking me for 300 USD more to buy an apple care plan in order to receive technical support.,
Now Apple is forgetting their roots..
But anyway.., any help getting a CC of the latest OSX DVD???

It might also be relevant that my Accounts Preference Panel crashes System Preferences when I try to open it. Disk Utility sees no problems with my drive, and booting into single user mode and doing a disk check has no results.

Try reinstalling Snow Leopard. If you continue getting a kernel panic booting from the DVD, then either you have a bad installer disc or you have a hardware failure.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Can't boot from Windows XP Install DVD

A couple months ago I wanted to use Boot Camp for the first time to install Windows XP Professional (SP3) on my iMac8,1, but I ran into a lot of trouble. I got a lot of support from you guys but I ended up scratching the mission because of a problem that nobody could help me with at the time (I sought support on IRC, too). I will adduce the links to the threads regarding the issues that were more or less solved at the end of this post.
Today I decided to make a thread here and hope that this time somebody knows what to do, how to solve the weird problem that I'm having when I try to boot from the Windows XP Install DVD right after I partition the hard drive with Boot Camp Assistant.
So when the iMac restarts, after I have inserted the disc, and tries to boot from it, I randomly get one of the following three possibilities on the screen (and nothing happens after it):

I burned the disc myself, so it's not the original disc from Microsoft. I did try re-burning the .iso file multiple times (both with Disk Utility and with the application called Burn), to no avail. The disc works fine with VirtualBox!

Only thing that comes to mind is did you try multiple types of burn media? Also, did you try burning at the slowest burn speed?

Trying to boot from OS X install DVD makes DVD disappear in puff of smoke?

I'm trying to reinstall OS X on my MBP. I put in the DVD, restart the computer, hold C, but then the DVD ejects and then Macintosh HD loads instead. If I try holding the option key, then I see Macintosh HD and the DVD side-by-side as expected, but immediately, the DVD ejects and the DVD icon disappears in a puff of smoke (as if removing an item from the Dock).
Anyone know what's going on here? Is it a hardware problem with my DVD drive?
When I load the Mac OS X install DVD while logged into Macintosh HD, then double-click the installer from there and click "Restart", the computer restarts as expected, attempts to boot from the DVD, but fails and ejects the DVD, and shows me a folder icon with a question mark inside it, and then boots Macintosh HD instead.

Okay, so I reset the SMC, that seems to have fixed the problem. I was quite worried because when I ran Disk Utility, I used it to Repair Permissions, which it did, but then I also made it Verify Disk, and it found plenty of problems. I figure I wouldn't be able to solve them, though, if I can't get the DVD drive to work; fortunately, resetting the SMC did indeed fix the drive, so I can run Disk Utility now, and also install OS X. However, I think my DVD burner is toast, and has been for at least a year. I don't really burn that much, anyway, so it's not something that's very critical, thankfully.
My next step would have been to use Target Disk Mode to install OS X from another Mac I have. The problem would be that one computer uses FW 400 while the other uses FW 800, so I would need to buy an adapter, which around here costs $30 compared to the $5 or so I've seen elsewhere. Good thing I didn't have to resort to that... yet.

Bootcamp Win7 - won't boot from Windows partition or even from the Win7 install DVD

Late 2011 Mac Mini / Lion / Win 7 64-bit Home Premium.
Incumbent Windows partition has happily run for heavy gaming (World of Warcraft) for some eight months. Now it stops on boot-up before the Windows logo is displayed, with a very dark blue blank screen. Attempts to boot from the Windows Install DVD yield the same result, portending that there is more than a corrupt MBR at work here. I have reset PRAM and SMC, just for good measure. There have been no recent changes to hardware / peripherals.
Rebuilding the Windows partition with Bootcamp stops at same Dark Blue Screen of Death. Will start Windows sometimes from first switch-on / dead cold Mini, but then not again in the same day. OS X Lion mode runs perfectly, booting up as usual with no quirks or delays.
Hardware? Seems unlikely, except for that suspicion of starting from the dead-cold start.

Do not use a USB3 flash drive. Only USB2 flash drives are supported by Windows installers. Depending on whether your Mac came with a built-in Optical drive or not, you may also need a physical DVD.

MacBookPro updated to 10.5.6 won't boot from 10.6.3 DVD it came with

I have a clone image 10.6.3 on an external hard drive also, and when I try to select it as the start up drive for a machine that often freezes on start it says it won't bless that drive as a startup disk, and it won't boot from the original install dvd. it's only 3 months old - does it go to hardware repair?

Since your machine is so new, I'd definitely make an appointment at the genius bar and have them take a look at it. It's one thing if it won't boot from an external clone, since there could be a problem with the external drive or how it's set up, but if it freezes and won't boot to the install disc, there's something wrong.
The Apple Store can run a hardware test from their store feed and it just takes a few minutes. That might be a good place to start. Take your install DVD along when you go--possibly it is what has a problem.

Why can't I boot from the OS X DVD on my Intel iMac?

I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS X Tiger CPU Drop in DVD that came from the Apple Refurb Store with my Intel iMac.
I have tried holding down the C key on start up and it doesn't work. It boots like normal to the hard drive
I have tried using the Start up Manager, but all it can see to boot from is my installed OS X system on the hard drive and my Windows Boot Camp partition.
The CPU Drop in DVD is all that shipped with my machine. Can one even boot with it?
My problem is Photoshop Elements refuses to start up, giving me EXCBADACCESS and KERNINVALIDADDRESS alerts. It crashes every time about half way through starting up. Trashing it's preference folder doesn't fix the problem. In fact, my Preference folder keeps filling up with folders labeled with jibberish names.
I found a discussion thread that I should boot from the original disk that came with the machine and use Disk Utilities, but I can't even boot from the DVD drive.
What step am I missing?

It's only possible to boot an Intel-based iMac from a grey-labeled DVD, so if you received a black-labeled DVD, someone made a mistake packaging your refurb. The correct DVDs should have been in the smaller box with the User Guide and other small, square documents, along with the mouse and remote. If you find the grey-labeled DVDs in there, just keep the drop-in DVD, they won't need it back since they make them:)
If you don't find them in there, call Apple, or log into your account on the Store page and find your order's link for customer follow-up/issues.

LCD/Santa Rosa systems won't boot from external drives or DVDs

A critical issue with supporting the LED MacBook Pro systems is that to boot from (or install OS to) any external FW Hard Drives MUST be partitioned with the GUID Partition Table option, not the older Apple Partition Map.
This also seems to impact utilities like Disc Warrior and Tech Tool Pro -- the lastest versions of these will not boot either of the two LED MacBook Pro 15" models that I've tested. (This is confirmed on the utilities websites.)
In short, to boot from an external drive it apparently must be formatted with the GUID option (I have no un-partitioned external drives to test). And to boot from a utility CD/DVD -- I haven't found any discs other than the included Apple Software Restore DVD's that will boot these systems.

CD/DVDs can boot every Intel mac made --- with the
single exception of the LCD Macs. Go to their
websites if you don't believe me...
Back to the topic -- the LCD MacBookPro models
require the GUID partitioning, and seem to require
something else for booting that Alsoft and Micromat
are working on right now. But for those of us who
make our living supporting macs, working with these
machines may require reformatting of external drives
(you can't reformat just one partition) and not allow
use of our standard CD/DVD bootable utility discs.
You know, you might get a bit more help if your tone was a bit more pleasant. I hope it works out for you.
One might argue that those who "make their living supporting macs" might have done better to keep themselves abreast of what was happening in "Theoryland" some time earlier - say 15 months ago when people first realised that intel macs used the GUID partition system. Then they wouldn't be too surprised. I'm not, neither are the others here who are wading in to HELP.

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.

If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

I cannot boot from HDD nor CD/DVD drive - Satellite C

I want to recover my laptop & i need to boot from cd.
I pressed F12 first time & boot from cd but i discoverd that i have put another cd just when i restarted (correctly) i could not boot from cd neither hdd.
When i log in bios hdd was detected but not available in boot priority menu. Just network adapter was there & now i cannot boot from hdd nither cd/dvd. Bios version is 1.30

Does this means that neither HDD nor CD/DVD drive appears in the BIOS boot option?
Strange what notebook model do you have?
Did you try to set BIOS to default?
If not do this (press F9 and save the changes in BIOS)

Boot from CDD to install Linux

I found a version of Linux that I'd like to try / install but my Satellite Pro 425CDS (Win98) only boots from HDD or FDD. I did update the BIOS to the latest version, 5.40 I think. Didn't help. So, How do I get the 425 to boot from the CDD? I do have the FDD but the Linux version (WattOS) won't fit on a floppy. What are my other options for getting Linux to run on this box?
Also, looking at other posts I guess I'll need a fan utility to keep the fan running too. Others seem to be having overheat issues with Linux.

The short answer is: you can't.
That era of machines wouldn't boot from the CD, installing Windows required a boot floppy that included drivers to support the CD.
From a brief search, there are some Linux distributions that include boot floppies as an option, but WattOS doesn't appear to be one of those. :-(

SL install seemed to fail - now my MBP can't boot from HD or SL DVD

H E L P. Just bought SL family edition - upgraded my iMac 24 - worked fine so then I tried to upgrade my MBP (2+years old). At first the MBP just ejected the SL DVD - found lots of similar issues on this board. I finally got it working by holding my MBP at an angle while inserting the DVD - the install commenced. Since it would take some time I left the room and came back some time later (< 1 hour) - the screen was blank so I thought it had finished and gone to sleep. I had a lot of trouble waking up my MBP but finally it started to re-boot. It ejected the SL DVD then (I presume) tried to boot from the HD - this failed - screen just showed a folder icon with a question mark in it. So I assumed that somehow the SL install had not run to completion and the Mac OS image on the HD was corrupted. So I tried to boot from the SL DVD - this seemed to start working - screen shows Apple logo and spinning wheel for about 45 seconds (just like any normal boot) but then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. By holding down the power button for 15 seconds or so - the boot restarts but the same thing happens.
So now the SL DVD is "stuck" in the player and I'm not sure what to do next. I was going to try my Leopard disk (thinking maybe the SL DVD was dodgy) but I'm not sure how to eject the SL disk. It's Sunday here so I can't call the Apple support center and the Genius Bar at my local Apple shop is booked out until next weekend.

Before anyone jumps in I have fixed the problem - found it in the Snow Leopard forum. Issue was screen was too dim to see anything. As a result I must have accidentally aborted the SL install which corrupted something so I had to re-install from the SL DVD but it looked like that was not working due to the dim screen. VERY irritating to say the least - lost many hours on this.

Alt/Option Boot code is all in ROM. It shows an Icon for each potentially-bootable Volume.
Your Windows install DVD is not directly bootable, and so it does not show an Icon. (An OS 9 Installer CD would not show an Icon either.)
To install Windows, you need to research the use of Boot Camp, the software that provides Mac drivers and facilitates the Installation of Windows on a Mac. There are also Windows restrictions on the use of external drives which you may have to meet.

10.5.2 Update Failed - Computer No Longer Boots from HDD NOR Leopard DVD

Hi. I hope someone can help me. I have one of the new 24" iMacs that has been working perfectly in 10.5.1. I started downloading the 10.5.2 update last night. About 130MB in, it said it had lost internet connection and stopped. I ran Software Update again and it resumed where it had left off, then said it had to be restarted to install, and went on its way. Then I got a pop up that said it could not be installed, or the install failed.
Now when I boot, it spends a long time on the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning disc. Eventually it turns to the blank blue screen and just sits there. Then I tried booting from the Leopard DVD (i figured i would just restore from my latest Time Machine backup and try the whole process again), except when it gets to the part of verifying that Mac OSX is on my computer it pops up with a system log and says I can't do anything. I can restart, shutdown, or save log.
What can I do?

When you tried again in the morning did you have anything connected to the computer apart from your keyboard/mouse? If yes, then try again leaving the computer to "cool down" - you could even remove the power cord. When you come to try again, only the power cord and keyboard/mouse should be connected - and to go the shortest route, press the C key immediately after hitting the power button. Keep the key down until something happens ...if you get a black cursor, you're in business and can relax for as long as it takes to boot from the DVD. Try not to give up - I believe that constant powering down and troubled restarts stress the machine, perhaps causing it to overheat.
If you do give up, try one more time to boot with the T key held down (again with nothing else connected) and if you boot into the Firewire logo screen, then connect a firewire cable to your other Mac and hopefully you will be able to get in.

I wanted to change boot sequence to boot from external DVD drive to install Win8. To access the BIOS I hit Enter (empty password I guess) but in the BIOS everything is greyed out: I can't make any changes. What is going on?

As Rich has stated, you have a supervisor password set, and as Jin Li has stated, there is no default password.
