No boot, no chime

I have a 1.8 Intel core duo mac mini. It had 512 RAM and I purchased 2G upgrade from Crucial. After putting them in, and powering up the mac I get the folder with ?. The power light appears on the mini. I have a PC keyboard. I tried to zap the PRAM with 'windows' + 'alt' + P + R. A blank gray screen appears, then goes black...repeats as long as I hold those keys down. No chimes.
Is my mobo fried? How can I tell? Should I expect different results from using an Apple keyboard?
THanks for any help. I'm a MAC newbie.

Thank you. Prior to your message, I decided to just put the mini casing back on. I tried the PRAM reset again and this time I heard the HD spinning and the fan on. After a couple cycles of gray and black screens I released the keys and the apple logo appeared and booted...still no chime (but who cares). The OS has recognized the 2G chips. I'm livin' large now. Unfortunately, before closing up the mini, I noticed that the air port antenna was disconnected from the logic board. So, now I have no Net connection and I have to figure out when the cable gets connected.

    Hi
My Powerbook was the same. Only fix is to reinstall OSX from the install CD but be sure not to pick the Format and install clean. Once you boot with the install CD pick the preserve user data and settings.
On My machine the reinstall looked perfect. My network, email, files and all the programmes were all there. Most apps worked fine but Adobe CS2, Virtual PC and NetBarrier all needed reinastallation as they reported a few files or registration was missing. I went for the 10.4.3 upgrade again and it worked fine.
    Good luck

  • More on the G5 Won't boot, no chime, no grey screen issue....

OK, so in the last thread, I had taken it to the apple store, where the g5 (DP 2.5) dutifully started up on their firewire drive, whereupon they declared it a faulty hard drive.
I pressed them pretty hard, but it made sense at the time, and certainly never failed while they were there.
So now I have it back home, a new WD SATA drive installed, and guess what?? same thing... boots, no chime, no power LED, just fans.
I have set/reset the SMU, I have removed everything including the batter (which checks good at 3.7 volts BTW)
Here's the weird part - it seems like once per day (always the first time) I do get one good try out of it. By this I mean, it will chime and at least get to the grey screen, and i can eject a CD. However, up till now I have not been prepared with the right thing to give it. Once that opportunity has passed, its back to the old black screen with no chimes for at least 24 hours.
I don't detect any overheating or that sort of problem - anyone ever seen this - where you can only get one good boot out of it for a day?
    Thanks,
    adam

    Hi gB -
Yes I tried without the cover, to no avail. Ended up taking it back to the apple store today where they now are able to see the problem (with a different monitor).
Their gut instinct is logic board, but I am asking them to do a complete test on it (whatever that means) just to make sure it isn't a flaky leg on the power supply, or a bad cable somewhere. I don't have alot of hope, but I will give it a chance.
If it ends up being procs, board, or both, I will probably sell it for parts and put the money into a new one with warranty etc!
Glad yours is up and running.

  • Late 2007 2.4Ghz iMac wont boot - no chime or screen

I have a late 2007 2.4Ghz iMac 4GB RAM.  I removed the RAM to take to work, and while I was gone my son came home from School and attempted to boot the machine with no RAM in it.  He rang me up saying the iMac is beeping on startup.  I came home unplugged the iMac from the power and put the RAM back in.  I tried to boot and I can hear the fans spin up for a second and then nothing.  No chime, no screen.
I tried using other RAM and swapping them out - nothing.  I tried unplugging for 15 seconds etc, but I'm not getting anywhere.  Any ideas?

It took me a while but I found out the culprit was using 800Mhz DDR2 RAM rather than the stock 667Mhz.  800Mhz RAM I've used in other 667MHz machines and assumed it was backward compatible.  Seems an issue with this particular 2007 iMac?

  • Apple won't boot beyond chimes

My Imac 24 inch does not boot beyond the chimes. When I reformatted, it worked but I could not install my Adobe CS3 and on restarting again after 2hrs it did the same thing stopped booting after the chimes. Please I need help to solve this

    Hi
When you boot up, you should get a single chime (equiv chord of G apparently). Multiple chimes on startup can signify possible hardware problems. Have you checked your RAM to see if it is correctly seated (may be loose)?

  • System won't boot-no chime.

Despite repeated attempts and resetting the CUDA button, the system won't boot when start button is pressed. In the first few seconds it seems to make normal sounds; but no chime and settles into simply fan noise. This is true even if using C (with an Install CD). or Shift key. Is there anything else I can try? (I know it's actually a G3 B&W Motherboard; but I had nowhwere else to post it)

I do not remember exactly what was happening when it stopped. It may have been executing something , hung up, and wouldn't respond to the Command-Opt-Esc or I do remember one incident when it was booting up and stopped when it was partly thru "searching for local discs.
I checked the ref. article and tried to measure the voltages on the power connector. I was never quite sure what pin was what, since the colors did not jive with those in the article. At any rate 2 were approx. + 5 V (one was 4.85), the rest were essentially zero (I believe 1 or 2 were about 300 mv). I did notice that when the power connector is reconnected and start up is attempted, 3 little green lights come on on the motherboard. One goes off after a while.
I have tried the old Sonnet upgrade and have tried reseating all the RAM modules. All to no avail.
The Hard drive and all other parts seemed to be working fine prior to the failure.

  • My mbp 2009 boots with chime then black screen

    Good New Year folks
Today, I turned on my mbp and the problem is, it chimes, boots up then the screen goes black.
The caps lock key lights up, the volume control makes the usual noise going up and down.
    I have no keyboard illumination.
Pressing various keys on the top row might show my home screen but it disappears after a second or two.
I have spent a few hours searching and my head is spinning, as I'm not so hot with these things.
Please could anyone give me some help as what to try as the repair centre is a 120 mile drive from here and if it's toast I won't waste my time and fuel.
    Many thanks in advance
    Gordy

    Many thanks for your reply.
Earlier I tried connecting a monitor to the mbp and its still the same. No display on that either.
So I guess it's not the display.
I did boot the mbp up an hour later and it's working fine now
I have'nt tried switching it off yet and it's been on for an hour or so.
The burning question now is, will this be an intermittent problem and who know what will happen when I reboot it again.
Anyway, thanks again for your help

  • IMac G4 won't boot, no chime, blank screen

When powering up my iMac G4, you can hear the fan, but no boot chime or screen display. After manually opening superdrive and inserting the diskwarrior (or any disc), you can hear the drive spin up, but nothing happens, the drive then spins down.
    Have reset PMU, still nothing.
    Any suggestions?

Hey Drake and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
First it would help to know the CPU speed of your eMac.
So you hear the fan and you reset the PMU ( by pushing the button in the user access port? ).
Here's the procedure from the USB 2.0 models' service manual:
"Screen is dark, fan is running and the hard drive is spinning. You may hear the startup
    chime as well.
    1. Reset parameter RAM. Press Command-Option-P-R during startup before “Welcome to Macintosh”
    appears.
    2. The system software could be damaged. Start up from the system CD that came with the computer.
    3. Remove the user access panel on the bottom of the computer. With the unit powered on, check if a red
LED is visible in the access door. If the red LED is on, power is on. If you don’t see the LED glowing
red, follow the steps under the symptom “No Power”.
    4. Disconnect the A/C power cord. Place the unit in the service stand and remove the user access plate.
Press the PMU reset button on the logic board. Refer to “Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board”
    mentioned earlier in this chapter.
    5. Check for external video. Connect an external monitor to the mini-VGA port."

  • Panic!!! "No bootable device - insert boot"-NO CHIME!

I was noodling around with a CD that had linux on it, and I started, but didn't finish, telling startup to use the Linux CD. This may or may not have something to do with my problem.
A few hours later, I just wanted to reset because I'd been doing something else, I logged out, and logged back in. When I logged in, the menu bar wasn't working right, I couldn't type things... just wonky. So I went for the full restart.
And got the message in my title.
I tried booting from leopard, booting from techtool, pulling out all four drives, unhooking every imaginable cable, opening it up and pressing the SMC button.
    Nothing.
In addtion to the message, I did not get the shut down / restart chime when I went for the restart, and I haven't gotten it at all since. No familiar mac chime... very ominous.
But something tells me the linux thing might have had something to do with it.
    Any ideas? Thank you!
(I am on a mac pro 266 with 9 gigs of ram running the latest version of Leopard.)

    UPDATE:
Well, I just managed to get it to boot from the Linux CD... so I know the booting ability is there.
But what I've apparently managed to do is turn it into a Linux machine. I have NO idea how to make it recognize and boot from Mac disks again! boohoo! Help!
    (At least it's not dead...)

  • SP G5 won't boot, no chime, no LED

I have a single processor G5 that won't boot. I was using it and all of a sudden, everything frooze - the first time in the almost 3 years that I have owned it. As it sat there, the fan started to slowly speed up.
I shut it down with the power button and when I tried to reboot, I did not get a chime or any other sign of life. I think the power LED came on and stayed on. I tried the PMU reset (once) and tried another reboot. This time, it started up again without the chime and the power LED went off after I pressed it and stayed off.
I tried removing and reseating the memory, the video card and I removed an Alchemy TV card. Still no luck. I checked the power to the battery and it is good. I tried removing the battery, waited for five minutes and then I reinstalled. Still no luck. If I leave it on, the fans slowly kicks into high gear.
Sounds pretty serious to me. I think at this point, it requires a service call. Can I try my local PC computer repair, or is Apple the only way to go? I will have to ship it to Apple.

    Hi Lawrence,
The same thing happened to my dual 2.5 G5 yesterday! I also tried all of the things you tried. After discussing the issue and trying several different steps suggested by the Apple Tech Support person on the telephone, it was suggested that either the power supply, logic board or both were defective. The Apple Tech Support person recommended that I take the machine either to the nearest Apple Store or the Apple Service provider where I purchased the G5. I delivered my machine to my service provider this morning and the initial diagnosis, on the basis of symptoms, is consistent with that of Apple Tech Support. I have confidence in my service provider's capability because they successfully replaced a failed logic board withing two months of my purchasing the machine. I've had no problems until yesterday. Hopefully, they'll have a firm diagnosis in a day or so. I'll let you know how it works out. I'm glad I have Apple Care!

  • G4 MDD Will Not Boot After Chime

My G4 was working fine earlier in the day. I came home later and pressed the power button. I heard the chime and nothing else happened. The screen is black. I thought it might be the monitor but I plugged in into another computer and it works fine. I noticed no peripheals were lighting up such as my macally mouse so I thought it might be a motherboard problem. But first I tried brand new RAM and I replaced the PRAM battery. No standard techniques such as resetting PRAM worked, so I bought a new motherboard and still a chime but no boot.
I took it to an Apple store where they plugged in an Apple mouse and it lit up. So I thought it might be the video card since the fan on it doesn't spin. But I just got a replacement for that today and still nothing, unless I'm Missing drivers for the card, although it's a Geforce4 Titanium with S-Video out so it's slightly different than the original which was a Geforce4 Ti that came with the G4 MDD series, but I STILL get no boot. I'm out of ideas. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I just tried booting my G5 into target disk mode on a powerbook G4 and only my SATA drives and my iPod mounted. I also have 3 internal ATA drives connected via a sonnet Tempo Trio card that weren't seen. In light of this and the previous post, the fact that you only see your master drive makes sense.
I would guess that you're going to have to back up all data from your system drive under target disk mode and then re-initialise it and reinstall OS X. It would probably be a good time to update to Tiger, or at least Panther at this stage, if you can afford it. I must stress that this is only guesswork on my part as I'm obviously not actually able to look at your system in person. I would also guess that all your data on your additional drives is safe.
I'm quite surprised that diskwarrior crashed and burned but this would suggest that the version of OS X for intel has ammended the formatting on your system drives so that the older, cut-down, version of OS X that diskwarrior boots from cannot read. My gut feeling says that you need to re-ammend the formatting to its original state and that this should be do-able.
I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful right now.

  • IMac black screen, wont boot, no chimes

    Hi,
I have an intel iMac 2010 model 21.5 inch screen.
    Snow leopard
All up to date with software updates
    4GB ram
    500GB HDD
I tend to always leave it in sleep at my office and when an update is available I do a reboot.
After a few days away from the office I can no longer do anything with the iMac?
Pressing the keyboard doesn't wake it up.
So I booted it down and rebooted.
I hear a faint sound of a beep (But not the chimes) then I hear the HDD crackle away and the fans come on.
There are no chimes and the screen stays completely off.
    Things I have tried:
    Holding down shift on reboot
Holding down cmnd option P and R on reboot ( I have tried all the keyboard options that I have read about)
Holding down C on boot with the OSX disc inserted (I hear a series of beeps during this time, but nothing happens)
I have taken out the RAM and reset it, but to no avail
I have booted down, removed the cable, waited 15 seconds and then re inserted it and rebooted
    Nothing seems to do anything.
I cannot afford to have it repaired by apple and would consider repairing it myself, if only I knew what was wrong with it?
If you have any idea's as to whether its the power supply or logic board or something simple, i would be keen to know so i can look at repairing it.
I have taken my macbook pro apart numerous times to replace fans, HDD, RAM etc (but te iMac does look a wee bit more complex than that)
EDIT: I have plugged in my iphone to a usb socket and it charges, so i assume the power is actually there, its just not booting??
I have no warranty on this either
    Best regards
    Chris

    Hi BDAqua
My friend brought his MBP round and we connected the two via firewire and booted using the 'T' option on KB but it showed nothing.
I have an inkling it may be a power supply rather than logicboard. At least I hope so as the price difference between the two is crazy.
The DVD drive spins but nothing happens/
I have even tried to look at any LED lights in the RAM port but cannot see anything?
I just hope it can be resolved at a reasonable price
    Regards
    Chris

  • G5 tower won't boot beyond chime, fan is possessed?

Hi, have been having problems with my Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5. Fan has been running loud and fast, and on last restart, whirred like crazy w/no reboot. Shut off by pressing power button on front of unit and waited a few minutes. Now when I try to turn on, I get a chime and brief noise as if trying to start but then nothing but blank screen (if I leave on, the fan gets loud after a few minutes). Also tried unplugging power cord for a few minutes then restarting, but that hasnt worked. Cannot find my OS X disks (augh!), so what now? Would appreciate any help.. thanks .
P.S. Just bought a new super-de-dupery mac pro and was getting ready to backup my G5 before transferring files. How does it know...?

    Bob Ayre wrote:
I had the same trouble 2 years ago.... Turned out to be a bad RAM chip. I had enough RAM to pull two bad chips. I have been running on 3GB since then. The computer ran fine until this AM. I cant start it but the fan doesnt wind up. Good luck.
Bad RAM may sometimes cause the power LED to flash in a particular pattern on power up, though this usually happens when you don't get the boot tone (or as we like to call it, the chime). Something to note when you attempt to power up.
See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547 for some information, some of which applies to G5s.
