No boot--prob with mobo?

Hi.  Am trying to put together a new system (third I've built) and have run into problems with even getting system to boot.  At first was getting power led flash, so upgraded psu (as per advice others got on this site).  System then booted fine once with minimal stuff attached to psu (cpu, mobo, memory, 1hd, fans, GeForce2).  I powered down and then attached dvd-rom, cd burner, and floppy in prep to install WinXP.  Now no boot at all.  No power led, no fans spin, nothing.  I hit power and it just sits there.  I detached dvd/cd/floppy again--nothing.  Tried psu in another computer--works fine.  Would this be a problem with the mobo?
Thanks!

read check list in unoffivcial guide at the top
mabey you unplugged somthing
first is power outlet on a switch, if so is it on.
double check that psu is plugged in allthe way on outside, does it have a switch
on the back of the psu, is that on.
double check the front case wires, power button leads
is the motherboard on the brass risers, not touching case
is the 20 pin power plugged in, how about the 4 pin square plug.
try one mem card, ..
and try to reset cmos jumper, just make sure power is off......
i am assuming the new psu has more then 18a at 12v
(i wont deal with psu questions right now until the current one is resolved.
you will know when you see it.)

You first need to make sure you have the promise controller drivers installed for it to recognize the hard drive. The system should have came with a floppy disk with the drivers on it........Make sure your boot order is floppy drive/cdrom drive/sata/scsi........boot to the XP cd after you have the sata controllers installed......then run the XP disk setup partion/format/install.........after installation you can set boot order as sata/scsi as first boot device.

Yeah, not matter what the HDD order is winxp always tries to boot from the single drive when its plugged in.
Not sure if this only happens to me or if other people have had similar issues.
IDE drivers becomes automatically as 1st HDD. you need to switch them.
have you arranged hard disk boot priority? (not main priority)
have a try to push "F8" or "F11" during post to popup menu, and choice correct HDD to boot from there.

  • BIG PROBS with Creating RAID 0 with the Boot HD

    Hey Everybody,
i have a Mac Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.3 and the folloring configuration:
    1) a boot DH with 250GB
    2) 2 x 500GB HD as a Raid 0 for Data
now i buy a new 250GB HD (then i have 2 x 250gb and 2 x 500 gb HDs) to create a nother RAID 0 with the boot HD... but that doesent work!
    W H Y ? ? ?
i have look here in the forum fpr help, dont find a thread.
can some one help me? can i create a raid 0 with the boot hd? and when...how?
    king regadrs..
    christian

Lets say A and B are your 250gb drives with your current boot drive A. The two 500's are data drives C and D. My process would be to run Disk Repair on B, C and D. Then I'd run Disk Warrior on B C and D. Then boot from your DVD and run Disk Utility to repair A, just to ensure all is good. Then I would double check C and D to ensure they were duplicates, doing a Super Duper clone if needed. Then remove either C or D from your computer for safe keeping. Let's say you remove D. I would then wipe C clean and use SuperDuper to clone A to C and verify I have made a bootable perfect copy. You might even want to partition C into two drives and make two copies of A...just for temporary safety. After C has a boot copy, boot from C. Then you can use DiskUtility to create a simple RAID0 on A and B, and when that is done you can copy your C drive back into your A/B RAID. After booting from your RAID0 and then you can copy your data back from D to C (after reformatting C).
You cannot simply drag a drive from one to the other to copy it. It will not work as a boot drive doing that.
Keep in mind, if you do this, your A/B RAID has no backup. If you screw up an installation and hose it, you have nothing to fall back on. Time machine alone, or SuperDuper set to clone every day, or any of the commercial backup (or at least some of them) will give you more safety than a RAID0. RAID0 is great to save you from a single drive crashing, but more often than not the problem is installing some nasty piece of software that screws things up royally and RAID0 is wortheless for that. With your scenario, I'd buy another 250 so you can backup the RAID to that on a regular basis so if you totally screw up something you have a real bootable "last-known-good" image. After that get ANOTHER backup going to rotate off-site to save you from thieves and fires. At that point you can smile and know you really are reasonably safe. There are other ways to do this as others will explain. Several ways to skin this cat, but this is one option that will work.

  • K8t Neo Fis2r Boots Ok With Crucial Mem

:smile:Hi all, Just got system up and running.Main point being that this mobo and amd 64 cpu are quite happy[at the moment] with the crucial memory.System built and run with only one stick of crucial at first, when all tweaks,ie.bios etc. were done then second stick fitted. A little prayer and all booted fine with 1 gig of mem reported[this morning].Hard drive partitioned into 4.No memtest or anything yet, just happy to get it booting to win xp sp1.Thought this might be useful to UK builders as the MSI approved memory list has memory that is not easily got here in UK but crucial is on the doorstep so to speak [next day delivery & no post charge].I've kept a log of build and all tweaks etc in sequence ,as will be useful when something falls over.I don't think i would have attempted this build without this forum as a backup,it's really invaluable, thanks to all who run it.

Hi XERON, Sorry to disappoint you but no tweaks done on memory, left in 'auto' and still is in'auto' , no reason to change settings yet as awaiting a 'recent' vid card.Only 'tweaks' made were quite mundane, ie. FLoppy drv seek' enabled', boot sequence changed,p20378 sata 'disabled' as i'm using the via chip and enabled the cool'n' quiet to see what gives.Memory is in 1&3 dim.I'm sure there is an answer on this forum for your prob., just a matter of getting to the people who know.I spent weeks trawling this forum before i decided on components.I've seen your prob reported here a few times so its here somewhere.Keep trying and good luck.

  • Prob. with iTunes, Phone won't shut off.  Tks.

3GS with 6.1.3 Prob. with iTunes.  When I want to close out of iTunes after a Podcast the App will not close out when I hit Home. All other Apps shut down, only prob. is with iTunes.  Cant turn phone off goes back ti iTunes when turned on again.  Tks.

I hope the previous replies are wrong. It was my understanding that even when Match is turned off in iTunes, music previously matched or uploaded to iCloud will stay there, associated with my Apple ID, even through a cold boot etc. If you want to remove songs from iCloud, but keep them locally, do this:
    1. Click "Store" in the iTunes top Menu
    2. Select "Turn on iTunes Match" (if it isn't already turned on)
    3. Close iTunes.
    4. Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes - this will prompt you to choose or create a (new, locally empty) Library in a different folder from your main Library.
    5. Now you should see ONLY music that is stored in iCloud.
    6. Delete them all. iTunes will show a checkbox or button for you to click to delete the selected items from iCloud.
    7. Turn off iTunes Match (see #1)
    8. Restart iTunes with the Shift key again, so you can get back to your main Library - with Match turned off.

  • Many small probs with my K8N Neo

    Specs:
K8N Neo Platinum w/ newest version of BIOS (I checked)
    1 GB PC3200 Kingston RAM (2x512MB)
ATI brand Radeon 9700 pro 128MB
    60.0GB Maxtor 5400RPM HD
    500w Viomax PSU (30A on +3.3V, 50A on +5V, 25A on 12V)
No other PCI cards installed at the moment
    Problems:
    1. My computer won't restart. Whenever Windows calls for a restart or I hit the button myself, the screen goes blank while everything else stays active. People here told me it was my PSU. My Radeon 9700 Pro requires an extra floppy power cable so I thought I'd test out another video card that didn't need extra power to see what would happen. My comp worked fine with a 9200. So I bought a 500w Viomax PSU, a cheap one, yes, but it got good reviews. I stuck it in there and my comp STILL wouldn't restart normally. It has changed however: it'll restart the 3rd or 4th time I hit the button, but never the first..... which it definitely should.
    2. My HD wasn't recognized by my mobo. After doing the first part of installing WinXP pro, my computer restarted (well, I had to switch the PSU off then on again to get it to work) but then I got "Error loading operating system." After a while of trial and error I arbitrarily changed the "Access Mode" in CMOS to "Large" instead of "Auto". Bingo, it worked, yay. Even though it works now, I still don't like the idea that my mobo couldn't automatically recognize my HD. I tested different ribbon cables and other HDs that I knew worked fine in other computers but they all wouldn't work in mine unless I put the setting on Large. hmmm.
    3. The supplied nVidia IDE driver slows down my computer and causes Video Errors. The windows logo takes FOREVER to show up (or it will freeze in the middle of its fading it for 10-15s) when those IDE drivers are installed. As soon as I uninstall them everythings chipper though. Note that this problem is IDE, which might go along with why my HD isn't recognized.
    4. When I open GoodMem, a memory manager/monitor that came with the mobo, my computer drastically slows down to a point where it's literally not usable. If I close GoodMem, it goes back to normal. I tried out a 256MB stick of my sisters just to see what happens and what'da ya know, GoodMem works perfectly.
I've never built a computer before and all this really makes me wanna RMA my board....... so here's the big question.... SHOULD I?
    Thanks everyone,
    -Robert Lee

    Hi
sounds more like a Disk prob, or Windows prob than Mobo or CPU,
Did you format the HDD on this comp, if it was formatted on another machine, it can cause it not to be recognised.
Virus or Spy progs can slow down a comp,  Try Task Manager, Ctrl +Alt + del, see what procs are running, if there is a strange unknown one it may be cause. If you go to the processor heading, the proc idling should not be using much CPU time, if something is using a lot of CPU time and is not essential, close it and see if it helps.
For the HDD, try disk management. Right click My computer, then manage then disk management, you will see if disk are healthy, you can also check them for probs.
May need defraged, and Chkdsk run.
In device Manager, does the IDE HDD show as OK, no yellow marks. You could try updating driver,
    cheers

  • Boot problems with multiple SATA drives

I have a PC that I built using a P6N Platinum mobo. I have used it without problems for two years. About 6 months ago I installed a 1Tb SATA drive to act as backup to the original 500Gb SATA drive, and have used it w/o problems until this weekend. I also have 2 SATA DVD drives in the machine. The other day, I had a system freeze that forced me to power down. This resulted in an inability to start Windows. After much work, I have everything up and running thanks to chkdsk. However, I have the strangest problem still. If I keep the second backup HDD connected, I can only boot up in safe mode. Once in safe mode, I can read and write to both HDDs as before. However, if I try to start up in normal mode, BIOS seems to keep putting the backup HDD as the primary boot drive. This hangs the machine! If I disconnect the backup drive, the system boots up fine. Once Windows is running (XP pro) I can reconnect the backup drive, it is seen by the OS, and I can read and write files without problems; I just can't boot up when the second drive is connected.
I tried some BIOS troubleshooting. I have set the BIOS to use the 500G drive as the primary boot drive, with the 1Tb drive as second or third in boot order. It still won't start Windows. I also set the boot order to omit the 1Tb drive altogether, also with no success. Likewise, I also toggled the "Boot from other device" option, again with no success. The only thing that I noticed was that the boot sector protection was set to disabled. I have not yet tried to enable boot sector protection. The thought of a virus infection comes to mind, but I have been rigorous in using AV software and scans.
Any advice from board members would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Gosh... I must be mixing bags of beans. Not master slave, it is ACHI enabled selection in BIOS.

Yes. Windows supports external USB drives.

  • Cinema DIsplay sleeps when I use Boot Camp with Radeon 5870 through DVI connection

I just created a bootcamp partition on my Mac Pro (1,1) with Radeon 5870 and XP Professional so I can play Train Simulator 2012 with maxed out settings. Well after hours of installing Windows XP and updating it (via Parallels so I could do other things while waiitng for Windows) I got Train Simulator 2012 installed, Windows XP Professional fully upto date and reboot to bootcamp. I see the Windows screen and then my monitor goes to sleep (best guess). I am using an Apple Cinema Display 20" and is of course connected to the DVI port. One guess (and I hope I am totally wrong about this) is I think I remember reading the DVI port id display 3 not 1. I hope this isn't the problem (requiring me to buy a $40 Mini Display port for DVI adapter.
Any ideas as to why this is happening? I was so looking forward to playing Train Simulator with maxed out graphics via Boot Camp with the Radeon 5870 1GB. Don't get me started as to why my line out is not being detected by XP Pro.
I also have the latest Bootcamp drivers for XP (3.2).

Never used XP and on Mac Pro I wanted to use all 4-cores and more than 1.9GB RAM but often it seems that in the past and with Fusion anyway you would need to install Windows updates and drivers natively not thru or in the VM.

I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs using the new computer, there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out" during play back, similar to a small scratch on a vinyl record.  Although when I play the same song over again, the "miss" occurs in a different location during the song.  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

You don't say which version of iTunes you are using, but the symptoms you describe have been encountered by some users with the 64-bit version of iTunes 12.1.
There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77 - including problems with Bluetooth speakers where either sound is degraded or completely absent.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).  It may also be necessary to ensure that your Bluetooth speakers are active and selected as the default audio device before you run iTunes.
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.

  • Driver issue FIXED in Vista / boot camp with new, unibody macbook pro!!

Hay people, I found a fix for the freezing issues with Vista running in Boot camp with the new, unibody Macbook pros. The driver for the 9600M Gt is no good if you install it from the Apple 2.1 version driver disc (Mac osx disc)for some (most) of us.
I needed to go to Nvidia's site and download the one from DECEMBER 08. If you click the "download drivers" tab on the site, scroll past the current driver it wants you to look at (go to the near bottom of page), click the archives, and input your OS version. Also input "Gforce" and "M" series when needed. It will give you a choice of two drivers. DO NOT CHOOSE THE FEB 09 Driver. Thats the BAD driver for most of us. Choose the DECEMBER 08 driver. Download and enjoy. Be sure to roll back the VGA driver (or the current driver) first before you install this. It should work.
I've been through the ringer with this for weeks now and have even tried to take my MBP back to swap for a new one. Apple wont have any of that so I thought I was SOL. Not quite. This DOES work for me with Vista. It also works for Windows & if you have it handy.
By the way, I am posting this for people who HAVE HAD THE FREEZING problems, not for people who haven't. Apparently there are some out there who are running Vista just fine on their unibody MBS's. Most of us are not.
Cheer's-----Seattle, where the evil empire looms dark

This never worked. I sold that machine and got a new 17" unibody. IT, by the way, works just fine. I KNEW it was that **** 15'. It took 30 more seconds to boot up I found out also.

If I take out the upper DIMM (Bank 1) It boots just fine, and it does so with either one of the 4GB DIMMs in Bank 0, so the DIMMs are fine. It also boots up fine with two 1GB DIMMs installed simultaneously, so the Bank 1 seems to be somehow working as well.
This trouble started right after the Lion recovery update, meaning the mini has never booted with the full 8GB installed after the update.
It worked just fine before that, with the full 8GB of memory installed.
    Anyone else having similar problems?
    Cheers, Otto.

I have upgraded my 2011 Macbook Pro and my 2011 Mini Server
to 8 gig with Corsair RAM and have had no issues
(CMSA8GX3M2A1333C9).  What brand RAM was used?
There have been issues in the past with some RAM
    brands.
Something to try is a PRAM reset with the 8 gig installed.

Also, make sure the Minis are booting into 64 bit mode.
    Open Applications->Utilities->System Information
On the left side click the software heading.  There should be a line
      64-bit Kernel and Extensions:          Yes
This should be the default for 2010 and 2011, but something could
    have got hosed.
