No boot, tried everything k8n Neo Platinum

-System-
3400+ Athalon 64, Clawhammer Core
2X 512 PC3200 Corsair Value Select Memory
MSI Neo Platinum Motherboard (RMA'd the first but second has same issue)
Gigabyte 6800 GT (have a chaintech FX5200 for testing)
"A Ultra" 550 WAT PSU, Started with a Turbolink 480 WAT, Moved to the 550 thinking it was the psu
40 Gig MAXTOR 7200 RPM HD
Liteon 52x Cd-Rw
Cheap gateway floppy
                -Symptoms-
PC boots as far as the "Processor Initialization"  stage on the D-Bracket and powers down just as if i unpluged it out of the wall, press the button again and the same thing.
I get one beep at the begining of boot and according to the msi troubleshooting page its bad ram, but the ram works in my old PC and the PNY 2700 ram that was in the older PC originaly will not work either.
                 -Ive tried-
1. Checked for grounding, started outside of case on non conducting material
2. Booted with nothing but videocard and motherboard
3. Tried an FX5200 Nvidia videocard
4. Cleared the CMOS
5. Tried new and larger PSU (480 to 550)
6. Tried RAM in all combinations on the motherborad
7. Tried old RAM in all combinations on the motherboard
The only thing i havent tried, For lack of another processor, is try a difrrent processor in my motherboard. I havent takein this into much considerations because it SHOULD (yes i know it very well may not) show that the processor is damgaged/incorrectly installed on the D-Bracket LED
Honestly im at a loss myself, ill be takeing the processor tho the local pc shop and haveing them test it in one of their machines for me friday. Dident have any 754 socket machines in today >

oops forgot to mention that its an OEM processor, And the aftermarket cooling.

Hannible, no bent damaged pins. as far as the thermal paist goes im not exactly experianced with it. but i will look over it. And as for useing a second cpu. not exactly an option. I will be able to test the one I have friday but as far as useing a whole new cpu in this system its just not something i can do. For one im trying my best not to end up takeing it down to the local computer shop and just telling them to fix it (very very tempting when youve been screwing with a PC for the past 2 months) and ending up with a 100+ doller labor charge plus an overpriced part. If the cpu turns out to be bad friday ill order another processor and see where i go from there.
OK second edit.. Yes that is the processor with the On the dye memory controler

  • Problem booting up with K8N Neo platinum

Turned my PC off last night fine, come home today and turn it on and it wont boot up, it gets stuck on the post, and i hear (www.freewebs.com/deanaldo/bios.wav, might need to turn ur sound up to hear it) noise from the bios and it repeats itself every 5seconds or so, my bios is Phoenix Award i think, can anyone diagnose this for me?
    My system specs are
    amd64 3400 cpu
    1 gig ram
    x800 XTPE graphics card
    XP Pro(SP2)
I have tried swapping the memory about but that aint worked, I ahve took out alll unnescary stuff all my PCI cards etc. and still have this problem, I have reset the CMOS, it just gets stuck on the post and wont go into the bios and plays that anooying sound, i found somewhere that says those beeps may be " Timer not operational" a mo/bo problem
The only thing I havent been able to change is the memory as I have no other sticks to put in
I just want to know if its a mo/bo problem or memory,is someone able to diagnose this for me and possibly tell me how to fix it, if its possible?

  • Boot problems with K8N NEO Platinum(no video). SOLVED

I have this board for a few months now, but this week, when powering the system, it gave me no video.
It reads the HD and after a  little while all the lights in the D-Bracket go green. But still no video.
There are other simptoms that can help the diagnosis: sometimes i do get video, the system powers up perfectly. This happens when I repeatedly press the reset button, or try powering on and off, on and off...
I don't think it is cold boot problem, since when I successfully turn on the system and then turn it off, the same boot problem occurs I I try turning it on again.
Another thing is that when I turn it off through Windows, it doesnt actually turn off: the screen ges black, but the HD leds still blink for a looong time. I have to turn it off manually, then. Sometimes it actually turns off, but turn itself on again after 1 second.
So if the D-Bracket sais its all good, then what is bad?
    My System specs are
    Athlon 64 Venice 3000
    1 Gb Corsair DDR
    Leadtek Geforce 6600GT

Its solved now. There was a short circuit. The rouded isolators were placed in the upside of the board, and they should have been under the board. I changed it and all the problems are gone.
    Such a little thing... :D
What is a "rouded isolator" and where is it located.  I would like to see if this will fix my problem.  The same thing is happening to me.
    Thanks

  • K8n Neo Platinum non-booting SATA RAID setup question

I've spent several hours searching an reading trying to find out how to setup a non-bootable SATA RAID. All I can seem to find are posts about bootable installs using F6 and the drivers on a floppy.
I have setup the disks in the bios an defined the array an everything checks out. But when I boot back to WindowsXP it only sees 2 drives that it cannot find drivers for even if I point it to the correct Nvidia directory. I attempted to just reinstall the drivers but that caused a Bluescreen from a corrupt driver file that I then had to go into the repair console to copy from a floppy.
The manual an a couple of posts here say that I should go into Admin Tools-> Disk Management an it will then popup a wizard. But I'm not getting that far.
I currently have the disks on SATA 1 and 2 but will move them tonite because I've read its better for them to be on 3 and 4.
This is on a K8N Neo Platinum 7030 on Windows XP SP2.  If anyone could help or just point me to where I can find help it would be greatly appreciated.

When the raid controller is enabled in bios and you start windows you can install the nvidia raid driver
    from within windows .
Use the add hardware wizard from control panel .
    Start the add-hw wizard .
Yes i have connected the hw - next .
Add a new hw device (bottom of the list ) -next .
Install the hw that i select manually from a list - next .
    Select scsi/raid controller - next .
    Choose have disk .
Then browse for the location of the nvraid.inf file

i tryed everything, another mems, another vid card... i started my pc with only mems, vid and heatsink and nothing...only the beps
i put my cpu on another pc and works fine.. and put another cpu on mi mother and the same problem..

    plz HElp

EDIT: DBRACKET led 1, 2, 4 in red // led 3 in green

Sounds like bad/not levered pressure from the new heatsink to the cpu HS .
Make sure it correct aligned and the right way and has the correct pressure
to the cpus heatspreader . Also make sure motherboard can read the fans rpm .
    [edit:]
btw i agree with bas , your current psu is weak .
The polo fan also is a very watt hungry fan compared to boxed .

  • K8N Neo Platinum issue, computer does not boot..

    Hello,
I’m going to try to be as thorough as possible here… :D
Recently I reinstalled Windows Xp (32-bit version) on my computer to speed things up again like it used to be. I did an updated on the BIOS while I was at it as well, through the Live Update tool downloaded from the msi.com.tw website. The install went well, no errors. The next day while playing WoW the computer began acting weird and computer froze during gameplay. After that the computer had artefacts, strange disturbance on the screen making it impossible to see anything on the screen. So I thought that maybe since the screen looked all messed up it was definitely the graphics card that was about to die and so I sent the gfx to the retailer and they checked it thoroughly for errors without finding any, while they were at it they also checked my RAM and they also came out clean.
A few days ago when my Gfx and RAM came back I inserted them back onto the mobo and when turning on the powerswitch nothing happened… I therefore tried to solve the problem myself and began reinserting all the computer parts piece after piece and well the computer started at least with the fans going and all but after a few seconds it shuts down again.
When I plug in the power cable the PSU makes a clicking sound, don’t know if that’s normal but haven’t noticed it before.
To maybe help you guys when helping me I installed the d-bracket (the usb thingy with 4 led’s ^^) which shows 4 red lights when starting the computer and lasts until the computer shuts down. According to the d-bracket FAQ it means: “- The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly or you have a weak Power Supply Unit.”
Well I reinstalled the cpu, put on new thermal grease so I don’t think that is the problem and the computer has been working fine for more than one year until now... How do I know if it’s the PSU or if the cpu is damaged? Could the motherboard been damaged after Live update’s flash? And what could have caused the artefacts on my screen the other day? Errors with the newest nVidia gfx drivers?  I’m very confused :S
    What should I do?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi again..
I've now received a new PSU from Antecs RMA department. A TruePower 2.0 380W. My computer still doesn't work. 4 Red LED's when trying to boot it up. But I have noticed one thing since last time I wrote here. Remember what I was saying that I upgraded my BIOS through LiveUpdate? When I later checked my motherboard I noticed the CMOS pins around JBAT1(I think) was incorrectly placed. Instead of having them on either 1,2(to keep settings) or 1,3(to clear CMOS) they were placed right next to the JBAT1 pins, on something that wasn't named or explained in my manual. Maybe that is the reason my computer is acting strange? I mean the BIOS could maybe not have properly been saved or something. :/
I'm too inexperienced to know if that had anything to do with my recent computer isssues, but maybe you guys know. Would that screwup by me be covered by my warranty?
If that pins-placed-wrong-on-the-mobo problem doesn't have anything to do with my problem that leaves me with the 4 LEDs from the D-bracket showing a broken CPU or PSU(it's brand new, shouldn't be any problem with it!). So a damaged CPU it is.
Anyone of you got an idea? Been away from my computer for too long. This is getting annoying.
    Thanks.
    /Christopher

  • K8N Neo Platinum failed 2.1 flash won't boot

Hello, I was using livesupport and it said there was a bios update for my mainboard(MSI K8N Neo PLatinum) I went through the process like I have before and it said it had an error flashing. When I restarted my computer it would be on for about 10 seconds and shut off. It says for those 5-10 seconds
    Award Bios v 1.0
    Bios Checksum Error
    No Keyboard Present
    Insert Disk Press Enter
I have put disks in but nothing happens, I have tried clearing the CMOS(with jumper) but I see no change. If I put in a disk it seems to read it but shuts off after 10 seconds none the less.  The LED diagnostic show two red on top folled by two green beneath.  I know I should never have used the windows flash tool, but I've never had a problem with it before.....  Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hello !
    Quote
i think that should work. it looks like the bios can still read disks, so its worth a try.
....but the flashing procedure will take longer than 10sec.....so there is no big chance to get this done.
But you can try it. Just download the File attached, it will create a Boot Disc. Then copy your Bios Bin-file (w7030nms.150) to the floppy disc and rename it to "Bios.bin".
    Good Luck

  • K8N NEO Platinum 4 Red LED at Startup

I installed a new MSI K8N Neo Platinum mainboard in my computer in December 2005, and my computer has been a pain ever since. My problem is 85% of the time when I turn the power on it just won't boot up, I get 4 Red LED lights.  If I shut it off and on half a dozen to 20 times. During one of those times it will bootup normal and work great. Shutdowns are normal.
My Family hates this and won't use it. This computer has been nicknamed the MSI Little Witch.  I have had it down to barebones out of case with just graphic card, 1 memory stick, IDE harddrive, keyboard and mouse, it will do same thing.  I've unplugged and replugged everything countless times.  It still does it. I have tried Maxtor, Samsung, and Western Digital hard drives with fresh install of Windows XP Pro, it still does same thing.  I have alternated memory sticks, same thing.  It will warm reboot as long as I don't powerdown, but if I shut the power off it will not reboot until it cools down about 20 minutes.  Then I can go through the same startup problems as I normally have.  I have not done any overclocking.
Anyone have a fix to this fustrating problem?

I have the same problem with my K8N Neo Platinum.  Except mine seems to occur after the motherboard has not had power after sometime.  For example, it happened every time I moved my computer when I moved into and out of my dorm room.  I don't know if its the same "cooling down" time you're talking about, but what usually fixes it for me (at least temporarily) is killing the power to the machine while it is on.  Regular soft resets won't work for many tries, but when the computer is on with all 4 red LEDs i'll flip the power switch on the power supply.  That usually makes it work fine.  Also another thing that seemed to intermittently trigger it is changes to the BIOS.  A CMOS reset would not fix that either.  I would have to flip the power switch and kill the power.  Then after starting it
up again it would be okay.  I have also tried multiple combinations of different cpus, memory sticks, and video cards.  I also made sure there were no shorts to ground anywhere.
Also after a year of solid operation (with the exception of this problem) I started to get Machine Check Exception BSODs in XP.  I think this was because of a possible bad stick of RAM, because that seemed to cause lockups in the way beginning of the Windows setup (where it is loading files such as Windows Executive, etc).  When I removed it and put another stick in, the windows installation would go fine.  But, that did not fix the issue with this motherboard.
I've had so many problems with the multiple K8N Neo Platinums I have purchased.  This is absolutely ridiculous  I'm extremely POed at MSI for  the widespread K8N series problems.  I am usually very tolerant to companies when they have problems with products because I understand that problems and glitches can easily occur in mass production and design.  It is virtually impossible to make a "perfect" product from the start.  But the lack of response and concern from MSI about this is ridiculous.  MSI did make an excellent motherboard here--if you can get a working one.

  • Msi k8n neo platinum ps2 keyboard problem

Hi. I'm having issues with my msi k8n neo platinum motherboard. I've read about 50 posts on these forums regarding the supposed ps2 keyboard issues with recent msi boards. However none of them seems to address my current situation.
Like many  others, when I power up my system the cpu fan spins for like 3 seconds then everything comes to a halt.
I tried many things to get my system to boot and the only thing that works is plugging my ps2 keyboard into the ps2 mouse port and moving the ps2 mouse into a usb port with an adapter.
It seems there's no hope for fixing the problem other than RMA'ing, but I thought I would add to the pile of complaints stacking up against the MSI boards.

if u had read the threads a little more u might have found a solution that seems to have worked 4 many - a usb keyboard usb Keyboard if u go this route dont forget to enable usb kb in bios
Edit: This Thread Summarises the situation PS2 keyboard/mouse causes random shutdowns or doesnt work

  • MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM (RAM/HD problem/mobo problem?) [SOLVED]

    my setup:
    windows xp pro sp2
    amd athlon 64 3200+
    msi k8n neo plat - 7030 - bios 2.1
    x800 xt vid
    sound blaster audigy 2
    kingston valueram pc3200 2x512 cas 3-3-3-8
    ps = antec 430 watt truepower power supply (20 A on 12V)
I dont know if you guys remember my but i created a topic on here a while back about how my keyboard and mouse suddenly stopped working, well that turned out to be that the msi k8n neo platinum just went bad. So i RMA'd it and recently got the replacement board (with latest bios already installed). It worked completely fine for about a day. Well that same day i got it back, i installed a Logitech G7 USB wireless mouse. after i installed it, i began getting numerous windows stop blue screen errrors, even after i removed the mouse from control panel. So i figured i should format because to rule out everything and start fresh. So i did a FULL format and attempted the reinstall windows again. AFTER the format and BEFORE windows attempted the continue installation, i got the same stop error. I figured now this was a hardware problem. So first i tested RAM. I got the latest version of memtest86 and let it run for 4 hours (11 passes) with NO errors at all. Secondly, i got a western digital hard drive diagnostic program to test for failing hard drive and again no problems with that. I still suspected ram so i tried to boot with only 1 stick installed (in first slot), however the PC didnt boot at all (cleared cmos too). So i moved it to the second slot and cleared cmos again and this time it posted but it just hangs at a cursor and does nothing, same thing happened with third slot. I tried this same procedure clearning cmos each time with the second ram stick and got the SAME results. Shouldnt the motherboard boot with only 1 ram stick installed? Did MSI RMA me another bad board? Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Can you give us what the D-Bracket was showing ie
    R R
    G R
As an example this means "Initializing Keyboard Controller"
You will find this information in the manual page 2-23. (On mine) under Hardware Setup
Also can you please do all your tests with the ps2 keyboard and mouse and for now leave your Logitech G7 USB wireless mouse to one side.
    Russell
for two sticks of ram = RR
                                   GG
for one stick of ram = GR
                                  GG
as for the g7, it hasnt been plugged in at all, i took it out long ago.. as for the ram, the timing was set to 2T, no overclocking, i will try 2.7 v and let you know, but for the record, it has been running at normal voltage settings for about a year perfectly fine.

  • Help: MSI K8N Neo Platinum

I've had nothing but problems trying to get this system running properly at any overclocking selections. Can you please review my components and give me suggestions on how to improve my situation.
Currently my know problems are 1. The Mother Board will only read my (2) 200/Gig Hard drives as 127/Gigs. 2. Slighest overclocking & system won't boot up.
    Components:
    Processor: A64 3200+ NewCastle
    MoBo: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    Ram: Kingston HyperX 2048 PC3200 400Mhz (2 x 1024MB)

    MSI 5900 Ultra
Hard Drives: (2) 200 Gig Seagates
    Power: 500W Aspire
    3DMark2001 SE Score: 6300
Ok, everything I bought I got because it said it had Overclocking capabilities. So far any attempts to O.C. the system won't boot up properly.
    WHAT DO I DO?
    Thoughts on my other components???

The first thing you need to do is tighten them memory timings you killing your a64's performance
    try 2.5,3,2,8 t1 2.7v
Get the latest bios for the neo it is a truly fast board when set up right.
Your 3d mark 01 should be in the 15k to 20k range
If you are running 200gb hdds you need to run sp1 on windows xp as xp does not recognise drives over 137gb
run your pci at 67 or 68
    drop your htt to 3x
before you try to over clock you system get it running well at stock speeds or you will end up in a mess, there is not much point o/cin if its not.
Msi neo need a bit of tweaking but it runs like a dream when you do.
    All your parts look ok

  • K8N Neo Platinum and modded X800 Pro

    Hello everyone,
I am running the Board for a while now and it was rockstable.

After installing the Card properly, i installed the catalyst 4.8 Drivers and direct9c
After testing a little Bit benchmarking stresstesting, i rebootet and the system and it hangs at the windows xp bootscreen. i reloaded a restore point and tried to reinstall the drivers. no luck.
then i reinstalled windows xp on moday with the same drivers and everything seemed to work fine. windows booted normally, the card worked fine.
yesterday after work. same thing. lookup at the bootscreen of windows.
i uninstalled the catalyst drivers in windows safe mode then rebooted.
normally when i install the card it installs the x800pro and x800 secondary and then finds the rage theater chip and installs it too.
after freezing and getting into windows i can install the card drivers, but the theater chip isnt recognized anymore.
the card is working fine on 3d. i played yesteray for 4 hours at a time and no problems. but after rebooting i cant get into windows.
so i contacted the seller of the card and he told me i am the thired customer who hast issues with the card on this board.
same problem. random freezes on boot sequence, but others seem to have problems in 3d which i dont. i only cant boot.
    any suggestions?

Load BIOS default to try again.
Maybe you can update the BIOS to 1.42 to try again.

  • K8N Neo Platinum VERY Slow POST

    Hello,
I have a K8N Neo Platinum and have been running it successfully with win2k for a few years now.  My system went down and I decided to update everything when putting it back together.  I'm using Win 2K and trying to get XP64 to work.  A long story short is that I used Live Update to download the latest BIOS.  V2.1 dated 11-11-05.  Ever since then the board takes AGES to boot.  From the first beep to the completion of memory test is about 5 minutes.  After that everything works just fine.  During the 5 minute delay there is nothing I can do to get it to respond.  There is nothing on the screen indicating that anything is going on.  Quickboot is enabled in the BIOS.  I tried stepping back to the 1.9 bios and still the same issues.  Unfortunately I didn't backup the working BIOS.  :(
I'm pretty stumped on this one.  If anyone has ever seen this problem and knows how to help that would greatly be appreciated.

Tried to reset the bios by removing the cmos battery and leave it for 10 minutes and set the default values. Tried to avoid using the the liveupdate as it causing a lot of problems. Used the manual way to flashed our bios is better. I'm sure that you've selected the wrong bios when you flash it.
ps: please create your rig and put in your signature including the psu and bios revision so others can help you.

  • K8N Neo Platinum - Hangs On "Detecting IDE Devices" at POST

My K8N Neo Platinum motherboard died about a month ago.  Not having the time or the patience to RMA it, I bought a new one.
I got the new system all setup.  The BIOS version on the Motherboard is 1.4
I have a 200gb SATA (NO RAID) HD setup as my boot device, and I also 120gb EIDE setup as a secondary HD.
With my Previous MB, everything worked fine.  I had the SATA drive on SATA1, and the IDE as the Master on the 1st IDE Chain.  I also have a DVD Drive and a DVD Burner on the 2nd IDE chain.  When I set the system up like this this time, the system just hangs at Detecting IDE Devices.  It will never boot into Windows.  If I unhook the SATA drive, it detects the IDE drive no problem and tries to boot to it, although it doesn't have windows, so it will not boot.  If I unhook the IDE drive, the SATA drive boots.  That is what I have been doing for the past two weeks, but I would like to access my 2nd Hard drive.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks!

another thing is never have any other drives in your set up when loading xp to raid
or it writes the mbr to the ide drive not the sata
    hence
it detects the IDE drive no problem and tries to boot to it
you have put the sata raid drive first in bios boot order ?
