No boot with: Restart holding cmd +r

I all,
I verified the hard disc on my mid 2010 3.06 ghz 10.7.3 iMac this morning to be greeted by a box telling me this disc was corrupt and that I needed to restart while holding cmd+r until the apple logo appears then to repair the disc.
at this point I would like to say that I am posting this from said iMac and it boots up normally and runs fine.
but,
when I start it holding cmd and 'r' let go at the apple logo the cog starts turning below the apple for about 10/15 seconds then the apple is replaced with a circle with a line through it (the cog keeps on spinning below it) it seems like it would just sit like this for ever - after about 5 mins I held the power button, turned it off, turned it back on again and just left it to boot up normally - no problems. thought I would try it again - turned it off, held cmd and r exactly the same as before......
what's going on then?! any advice greatly received.
Olly.

Yes, a problem with the disk. Hold the Alt/Option key while starting up: it will come up then with a choice of the harddisk and the recovery disk. Start from the recovery disk and in Utilities run Repair disk".

My Imac is showing gray screen with red line when booting and restart again, I can load it in windows 7 safe mode with red lines across the display, pls help

The graphic card is damaged. You can't do anything more than taking your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and getting your graphic card replaced.
Sometimes, when the graphic card is damaged, operating systems can't start. That's caused because the drivers that make the graphic card work detect an error, telling the operating system that the graphic card is unusable, so the operating system can't start and it restarts. However, you can start in safe mode because operating systems use a basic driver in this startup mode

  • My computer won´t boot and restarts at Apple logo with the spinning thing

My computer won´t boot and restarts at Apple logo with the spinning thing and I can´t get it to work.
Before this happen I had left the computer on without a cable plugged in and so it ran out of power.
I just pressed the startbutton again after I´ve plugged it in and this problem started.
    Any ideas?

  • My mac mini on booting keeps restarting.....help

Ok a quick look as what's happening with my mac
My mac mini mid 2011 model was running totally fine on os lion
Just few days back I updated to mountain lion
Installation was fine but on a restart showed me a error MSG that your
computer restarted because of a problem
But then my mac booted fine and I updated n installed latest software updates
Then on an average out of 10 shutdowns i did in 3 to 4 days the same error showed up 2 to 3 times
Then I checked the report showed some kernel thing ( the copy is below)
Then I used disk utility checked disk and disk permission it showed error and needs
To be repaired then on repairing it , it repaired and said all is ok
Then next shutdown was fine I thought problem solved
But next day when I tried to on my mac within a sec it showed a grey screen with some error in back ( Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting check photo ) and my mac kept restarting No apple logo to spinning wheel just on then grey screen then error MSG then restart and kept doing this
Then little google and then I did some first aid steps
    Tried safe mode not successful
Tried disk utility option verified disc it showed errors again and this time said that disk cannot be repaired
Can open Internet recovery option also but before reinstalling my os I wanted to save my data
    as I have no backup
My first and only priority is to save my data first and take a backup and then think of reinstalling os increase my ram or change hard disk so please guide me and by looking at my problem what you guys think it is an os failer ,hard disk failer or something else
    My plan is to try
Transfer disk mode with another mac using thunderbolt ....and if that does not work
Then take out hard disk and try to use with hhd enclosure
If you have any nice tip that I can do to get n save my data please share thanks
My very first error MSG when I updated to mountain lion

Hello, did you repair the Disk, or just Permissions?
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
I suspect one of these is out of date or doesn't work with 10.8.x...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac wont boot, auto restarts after about 10 seconds

    Hello,
My friend's mac has broken and it starts to boot for about 10 seconds, then auto reboots. He has tried booting in safe mode (holding down shift) but it doesnt change. Does anyone know how to fix it? He thinks it may be a virus, so is there a way to get it working so he can install AV software?
    Thanks, Black_Sirrah239

Great Help so far, just to add...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • Will not boot with new hard drive

I used a SATA drive with adaptor as a boot drive in an MDD for most of the past year. I just got a MacPro 5,1 and wanted to use this SATA drive as a data drive in the new computer. I pulled it out of the MDD and put it in the MacPro. On start up I get the message You need to hold the power button or press restart. Since it has a boot volume I thought this might be a problem. I held down the Option key during start up to select a boot drive. Here it shows both the this drive and the OEM MacPro drive. Which ever I select I still get the error message. I can put this back in the MDD and get the same error even though it shows up as a boot volume when holding the Option Key. This drive does not seem to be totally dead since it can be seen during start up but it wont let the computer finish booting. It gets to the Apple logo but no farther. Can I salvage this drive? Data on it is unimportant.

You really need to use FW case; reformat the drive to use GPT partition table.
When booting the system's EFI polls all drives to look for valid system paths and to see which is blessed. A corrupt directory can even prevent booting from any drive or DVD.
I tell G5 owners to reformat as soon as possible once data is recovered, even though if they were running 10.5.8 their SATA drive may be okay.
Nuke the drive one way or another, I'd assume you have a spare FW case. And try booting from OS X DVD - you can install a fresh OS as backup/emergency system drive.
Any new SATA II or III drive are fine, WD Black are popular and 640 $69 or 1TB $89.
Have fun, I went from G4 MDD to Mac Pro over 4 yrs ago and it is still running strong -- and quiet!

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

I have a blue hanging screen with restart and I went to trade line stores and they refuse to help me saying that I didn't buy my iPad from trade line store ?

Your problem might be a easy fix.
If the firmware "forgets" what partition it's supposed to boot from, it won't load OS X, so if OS X doesn't load then it can't tell the fans to slow down, the default is "turbo mode".
So all you might have to do is hold the option/alt key down while booting the computer with a charged up battery on power, you will then see a row of icons and you pick OS X to boot from.
Once in you head to System Preferences and set the Startup Disk, that will tell the firmware what to boot from again.
Try it and see if it works.
You can do more if your problem is not fixed.

Yes, if it was purchased new you have a 1 year warranty, despite who you bought it from (unless it's stolen goods)
However you should purchase AppleCare while your in the store for another 2 more years of coverage also a backup drive for TimeMachine to protect your data.

  • IMac G5 with new Seagate 250 won't boot with 10.4.8

I had to replace the original Maxtor 250 GB drive in my iMac G5 (17") today. It used to work perfectly with upgrade 10.4.8. But, the computer now fitted with a Seagate Barracuda 250 GB won't boot after 10.4.8 is installed. It does boot with the Tiger original install from the DVD. Something in the upgrade corrupts the drive. Maybe it is this specific drive, I don't know. There are errors reported by Disk Utility when I run it from the Tiger DVD after I've installed the 10.4.8 upgrade (from the web).
Did that happen to someone else ?

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing.  Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.
    Good luck,

  • Dv2941se hard disk no boot with error Err2Err3

On my dv2941se laptop with AMD 64 x2 TK-57,4096MB total Memory Bios versionF.26 Running Vista 64 bit home premium.
When I turn on to boot  I get the HP screen with function keys and then goes to black screen with cursor in upper left corner. When boot with esc I get  memory passed, System Bios shadowed, Videobios shadowed, ATAPI CD ROM: HL_DT_ST DVD RAM GSA-T2ON, Fixed disk 0 Samsung HM250JI, Mouse initialized, and then full black screen and Err2Err3 appears in upper left corner and that's as far as the show goes. Will not boot any further no matter how long it's on. Any key I touch will repeat this error. When I boot up with my backup CD to perform an image backup which has been done up to the point that I can't boot anymore shows on the hardware screen that my hard disk C: is full. The D: drive that has the rescue for Vista and the small X:sector for boot looks like the number of sectors has not changed. Since this is OEM Vista I have no way to access C; in order to do a file check, or reformat is out. I cannot copy my latest backup because all sectors are written and the backup bombs. Not that familiar with Vista, is there anything I can do from here? I have no idea what is on each of the included 17 "installation "disks or will the last link of emergency " restore to factory conditions" (last resort) even going to work or has my hard disk turned to toast? I was doing a Microsoft software update at the time that this happened. I am on landline so it takes hours to do an update and I just let it run overnight to load the upgrades if it is more than 5MB in size. Phone line will give me 1.96 KB/sec. Someone please let me know how deep a dilemma I am in and how to possibly dig myself free. Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook pro only boot with R key

    I have a problem with a macbook pro .
I have snow leopard and after running onyx my computer only boot with the R key pressed , I have tried option-command-PR , reset SMC , repair permissions without success .
I have an external apple led cinema but with or without the error continues .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Why did you try booting with the R key pressed? From what I recall that key simply resets the screen settings, and shouldn't have anything to do with your system starting or not. I would remove it from the external display until we can get this resolved.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with your NVRAM. Try booting with this key sequence cmd-opt-n-v.

hello Singyt, the bug report associated to this kind of crash indicates that it might be a malware related issue.
your crash report also shows a file named "urixalog.dll", which doesn't turn up any search hits on google, which is also slightly suspicious. could you search for that file on your pc and upload it to a site like virustotal.com in order to analyze it.
please do a full scan of your system with the security software already in place and/or a different tool like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes].
[[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]
edit: the bug report also suggests that a monitoring program named spector pro/360/... which essentially acts like malware, might cause the issue. in case you have that installed please remove it. otherwise [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes%20when%20you%20open%20it#w_backdoor-ulrbot-c here] would be a removal guide for urixalog.dll

Ensure the computer's RAM is fully seated down, and then try resetting the PRAM by holding down options-command-P-R at boot. The computer will make the boot chimes and then reset and chime again. When it chimes the second time release the keys and let the thing boot normally. Hopefully that will let it recognize the RAM.
