No bootable device installing w7 w/ Bootcamp and external DVD reader

Hello¡ Good night!
Lets see if anyone can help me find a solution since google, youtube and forums cant. (Wanted to call the apple support, but since my mac is from 2010, they want me to pay 19 S)
I have a MBP 17 inch from mid 2010, with MC OS X 10.6.4.
I installed Windows 7 like 2 or 3 years ago.
Everything was working fine, didnt give a single problem. Installed it easy by doing the partition and then with the original copy of Windows 7 32 bits did it quite easy and fast. (with bootcamp)
I used Windows and mac for all this years.
Last week, I decided I wanted to format my windows partition (since it was full of trash).
I had with me my original copy of windows and the installation of mac drivers (the same cd I used to set the drivers after the first intallation. Its the original, came with the mac).
I deleted the partition from the windows on the Boot Camp assistant, and re did it. And then the nightmare started.
After I prepared the partition from the bootcamp assistant (its the 3.0.1) I select the install windows now. Then the cd dvd from my Mac Book Pro started running but after a while it shut down, pulled out my windows cd and a message on screen saying , insert an original copy of windows and click yes... .. After trying for a while I decided to put in another cd, which was doing the same. Discovery, the cd,dvd from my MBP was broken. I checked up online to see if there was a problem and I discovered that this was not something new. A lot of people was having troubles with their optical drive stopped working out of nowhere and the only solution was changing it. Thing I cant do right now, since just that costs 120 euros...
I readed in some forums that you can use an external CD DVD reader so I bought one for 20 euros (Samsung SE 208A) which works perfectly fine in all the computers, even the MC OS X reads it and I can use it perfectly.
I put my original copy from windows 7 on the CD DVD, and click start windows installation in the Boot Camp Assistant. Which just reboots the computer perfectly.
And when the windows installation is supposed to start I get a message
No Bootable device... Please insert bootable device and press any key.
I tried all the solutions I saw online, nothing worked.
Pressing Option key while startup only opens the MacintoshHD
Pressing Option key with MAC OS X installation CD and then changing it to windows. (Windows cd appears on the bootable device, I select windows and I get back to the same back screen . No bootable device)
Pressing C and selecting Windows (From the CD DVD) and restart.

Thanks for the answer, but I dont have the windows anymore...
._. I have been reading a lot of forums (which is being hard, since everyone seems to have problems and not answers).
We managed to downdload a tool called rEFIT and we are now being abled to select the windows cd, but it's giving still problems. (Changing the list data from boot camp allows it to detect other boot routes) <- starting to feel like a hacker...
But we are still stucked.
We are trying to update my Boot camp to 3.1 (that seems to solve that problem) but for now it's being impossible, everything in the apple download website are .exe, which are the drivers ONCE you have windows INSTALLED. Clicking to Upgrade Software doesn't upgrade it.. So I'm looking into it...
I'll keep you guys informed if we manage to solve it.
Thanks for your time!

  • Optiarc DVD and external DVD unable to read discs?

I am trying to burn an Ubuntu DVD. Unfotunately, either if I introduce a DVD in the in-built Optiarc unit of my iMac or in an external DVD recorder, the iMac seems unable to execute the task correctly.
If I try to use the Disk Utility, the "Burn" button is not present.
If I use a different software, uch as Burn.app, the disk is toaast, but the iMac says it is unable to read the disk content.
Btw, I have downloaded the correct iso file of Ubuntu.
    Any possible help?

  • Windows install problems, "No bootable device. Insert boot disk and press any key" and general wrongness

    Hi,
I've been having this issue with a Windows 7 install.
Firstly, I have successfully installed Windows 7 before. I partitioned my HDD, held down option when booting up, booted off a USB and after a few goes it all worked fine. I didn't use boot camp assistant to install. I then proceeded to remove Windows a little while later. To do this I used disk utility to erase the partition on my HDD and but afterwards discovered my imac would continue to try to boot off the now non existant Windows partition. I solved this problem by using boot camp assistant via the "Remove Windows 7 Install" option. My imac booted up exactly as I would like it to from then on.
I am now trying to reinstall windows. I tried the way that I did it the first time but after partitioning my HDD via disk utility, inserting my USB and rebooting with option held down I am only given the option of my main HDD and my recovery drive. I have tried burning the files on the USB to DVD and booting off the disk drive by holding down C while starting up. Neither the USB or DVD are visible to be selected when I hold down option during startup.
When I try to use boot camp assistant to install I get a "No bootable device. Insert boot disk and press any key" error after the step where it partitions your HDD you. Also, my option to create an install USB via boot camp assistant is greyed out and unavailable for clicking.
    Help?

    Fix your superdrive.

  • No bootable device - Please insert boot disk and press any key

So I tried all yesterday to get bootcamp to work, and this is what happens. I get through all the steps of bootcamp with my USB, and when it restarts, it comes up with an error on a black screen: "No bootable device - Please insert boot disk and press any key". I checked that I have all the support files downloaded, but it just doesn't work. How can I fix this so that it recognizes my USB? I found this thread, but when I follow the first command that the answer does in the terminal, it doesn't work. Does anyone know the solution to get my computer to recognize my USB? Or be able to fix that command in the thread I linked? I'm on a Macbook Pro 2011 running 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, trying to install Windows 7 64-bit with a USB drive. Please HELP!

Since your MacBook Pro shipped with an Optickal Drive, Boot Camp it looking to that optical drive for the Windows bootable install media.  My guess is that you "hacked" your configuration to get the USB installation options as they weren't there on teh stock Mountain Lion install on a Late 2011 MBP.
In the many threads about people who have done what you seem to be trying you will see thant some claim that just putting a disc in the optical drive will allow them to continue the installation from the USB stick.  That might work for you, or it might not.  If not, just use the Optical drive for your installation.

  • 'No bootable device found - insert boot disk and press any key'

    Dear all,
I just tried to install a version of Windows 7 on my Mac yesterday and used bootcamp for this purpose. Unfortunately the process could not be completed since bootcamp did not partition the hard drive as NTFS. I had to terminate the installation process and whenever I start up my Mac Mini now see a black screen telling me 'No bootable device found - insert boot disk and press any key'. I have tried to push the Option/Alt key to select the boot device but this does not work. I created a USB with a version of OSX to start from externally which also did not work and I used an older hard drive with a fully OSX system and tried to boot from that which also did not work. I am out of ideas and hope that one of you can help me.
    Best regards
    Bernhard

OS X cannot as standard write to NTFS partitions so it is likely that initially the Boot Camp utility created a FAT32 partition. This is not however a problem, when you run the Windows 7 installer either you can manually and specifically reformat that partition to NTFS or it may even do this automatically because it knows that Windows 7 can only be installed in to a NTFS partition.
Obviously if you are using the Windows 7 installer to manually reformat a partition make sure you select the right one!
It sounds like the Boot Camp utility got as far as setting the new 'Windows' partition to be the choice to boot from but of course it is currently empty. However if you are using a Windows CD/DVD disc to install from you should still be able to insert it, turn on the Mac, and hold down the letter 'C' to boot from it. If you are using a USB memory stick to install from then plug it in, hold down the Option/Alt key and turn on the Mac. Hopefully it will then list the USB drive as one of the boot choices or at least list the normal Mac boot disk.
With a Bluetooth keyboard the above keys for use during boot up may not work as mentioned by mjl2013.

Believe it or not, it was the FireWire drive that was the problem! I managed to successfully install Windows 7 using an external USB DVD drive!
Well I am truly staggered, I have tried this on two different MacBook Pros, with three different external USB optical drives. Don't know if you googled as I suggested but you would find hundreds of others who have found same thing. The exception is MacBook Air which works with the Apple writer, but I don't know much about this.
Were you doing any of the special workarounds with refedit etc?
    What model USB DVD drive?

  • I'm new to the Mac world. I installed my Epson printer on my IMAC and it worked fine. Then I installed Windows7 through Bootcamp and I think it reconfigured a port and now I get a communication error and it won't print. Any help on how do to fix this?

Sorry, I'm new to the Mac world. I recently got a new IMAC and installed my Epson CX5800F printer and it worked fine. Then a few weeks later I installed Windows7 through Bootcamp and I think it reconfigured a port or something and now I get a communication error and it won't print. Can anyone help me with this problem, and/or help me get the port back the way it was? Thanks, Barry

  • "No Bootable Device -- insert a boot disk and press any key" Error Message.

Last month I just got a HP netbook (HP Mini 110-3100) and when I got it from the box, the error message; "No bootable device -- insert a boot disk and press any key" appeared. But then I managed to boot up the netbook normally. After that, I can use the netbook normally but the error message keeps appeared and becomes more frequent and now I even cannot turn on the netbook.
Is it a hard disk failure?
p/s: yesterday accidentally I can turn on the netbook without any problems. Did a lot of Hard Disk Maintenance by some softwares downloaded from the internet. But now already cannot turn on.
p/s/s: i have no cd/dvd drive, and also no 8GB usb drive.
p/s/s/s: what should i bring if i want to send the netbook to the HP centre? just bring the netbook?

I would suggest try and reseat the hard drive and check...If you still have the issue, than take it to the service center...And you will need to take only netbook to Service center...
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Install windows 8.1 on windows 7without external DVD-reader? - thinkpad Yoga

    Hi!
Just entered the community as i recently bought a lenovo thinkpad S1 yoga. i am very satisfied with it overall, but right now there is one thing that bothers me. It came preinstalled with windows 7. Now, i did get recovery CDs with windows 8, but i do not currently have an external DVD to make use of them. Now, my first thought was that there must be a way of installing windows 8 without the discs, because of the windows 8 sticker at the bottom of the Unit that basically says it has (had) windows 8 at some point, but i havent yet found a solution.
Would anyone know how to move on from this point? except from bying the external dvd-reader and use the CDs?
    cheers

not 100% but don't believe bootcamp support that or even if windows itself does
thing is that if the usb drivers are loaded later then the bootcamp come into play the bootcamp bootloader can't detect the hd

  • Installing OSX.4 from an external DVD

I have an old B&W G3 that only has a CD. It won't seem to let me start up from my external DVD, although it sees the OSX.4 disk. Is there a way to install this OS from my external DVD, or do I have to put the DVD on the internal ATA chain or do I have to buy CD's?
    Thanks!

Your computer probably doesn't support the use of an USB drive to start up your computer, and it doesn't support FireWire booting. An internal drive needs to be used.

  • I tried installing windows using bootcamp and it didnt work properly, now neither is load.

So i tried installing windows, it got to the point where you are on the windows setup after a reboot. I didnt have enough space on my mac so i pressed cancel and it shut down my mac. Now when i start it up it says "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" so i put in the memory stick i used and press all the keys and nothing happens, i even try restarting it with it in and taking it out and restarting it but the same message keeps coming up. I have no idea what to do, any advice?

Two possibilities: As CellerDweller suggests, your computer is still set to boot from the Windows partition which it cannot. restart holding Option (also labeled Alt). The second is that you erased the Mac partition. If attempting to reboot with the Option key and selecting the Mac drive fails, restart holding Command R to enter Recovery mode. You can then run Disk Utilities to repartition the Mac the the GUID partition scheme and then format the drive as MacOS Extended (journaled). If you have a backup you can then restore using the backup drive. If not you can redownload the Mac OS.

  • HT3986 after installing windows via bootcamp and windows will not boot

trying to boot up the windows half all i see if a blinking folder with a question mark and after several reboots it may/may not work
the installation seem fine nothing happened i got no errors so i am wondering what is happening.

you don't have enough details for us /. you don't have a good install / did you login and setup the account once? / does it have enough free space / was the DVD burned from an ISO?
There are lots of things but not from your remarks.
What version Windows / what Mac year model and whether Boot Camp Assistant drivers were installed / how large a partition / read the guide

  • My computer says "no bootable device-insert boot disk and press any key" when i try to start it-help

    Compaq PresarioCQ60 with Windows Vista-
my computer will not load. I get gthe same error message no matter what I try- "No bootable device- insert boot disk and press any key". My computer is 5 years old and I no longer have the original disc used for the first time set-up. Should I buy a new disc or is my computer fried?

I believe it is you hard drive that has a problem.  Have a computer person check the hard drive out and see if they can get it going again.  It could just be file corruption and by attaching it to a desktop machine as a 2nd drive and running a check disk on it, they may be able to get it going. The key questions are if the drive still spins, weather the bios can recognize the drive and if the drive is operating within normal parameters.  If the drive is OK, you have a good chance that they can fix the software.
