No bootable device, OS X won't boot either

I have a MacBook Pro Retina 8GB with 500GB SSD. Have it split 250GB OS X and 250GB Win 8.1 and was working great. Copied files from the Windows side over to the OS X side using MacDrive and everything seemed fine. Shut down and when I rebooted I was unable to boot into Win 8.1. While holding the option key on power up Win 8 is not a choice, but OS X and the Recovery Drive are. OS X won't boot. I can boot recovery drive and it shows the drive as split between OS X and Win 8. When I try to verify OS X it fails and then when I try to repair it that fails as well. Using a Win 8 bootable CD I can see all the files on Win 8 side but when I try to do a startup repair that fails as well. Any help would be appreciated as to what to try next.

"No bootable devices" screen after Windows 7 Boot Camp failure.

As a lifetime Windows user, I thought that it would not be such a bad idea to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp Assistant. The process went smoothly until I reached the 3rd and final section of the procedure titled "Install Windows 7 or Later Version." I adjusted the MacOS and Windows partitions and proceeded to the final reboot. It is then where I was greeted with a Windows 7 screen tht stated something along the lines of "No bootable devices. Insert boot disc and try again." I have tried the Boot Camp Assistant (Same exact steps I used initially) and have yet to defeat the dreaded No Bootable Devices screen. I would really enjoy having Windows on my device so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Hmm, I had an 8 GB flash drive connected to the compter at all times. When just using the "Install Windows 7 or later version" feature, shouldn't the flash drive be conncected throughout the duration of the procedure? And I may not be using the correct vocabulary but when I was referring to "adjusting the partitions" I meant the section of the procedure where the user selects how much hard disk drive space is granted to each OS. The response is much appreciated!

Hello, I hope someone can help me.
I have a dell inspiron 1525. I recently replaced on of my memory 512mb modules with a 2gb memory module. At the same time I change the 120gb harddrive and upgraded it to a 320gb harddrive. After doing this when I start the computer I receive the message:
"No boot sector on internal harddrive".
"No bootable devices - - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility, Press F5 to run onboard diagnostic".
I have tried to change boot sequence and tried to boot from the Windows Vista Home Basic 32BIT. Regretablly with no results. If there is anyone who can guide me and help me to solve this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

Whenever we get this error "No boot sector on internal hard drive", it means that our hard drive has no partition/ boot sector to boot/ start operating system (Windows).
The ultimate solution is to install Windows from beginning either by using CD/DVD or USB bootable flash drive. You need to have windows installation disc or bootable flash drive for that.

Blue and White G3 won't boot from CDrom

I am trying to boot the G3 from the CDrom, but it won't seem to work. I have tried different bootable CDs, but it won't boot from any of them.
I have tried a few different things including holding C down and going into openfirmware and trying boot cd @ 0:2,\\:tbxi, and the CDrom does get access, but after about 45 seconds or so, it just boots into OSX. I have also reset the PRAM too.
Now I have added an extra IDE drive to the machine, so does that change the syntax of boot cd command in openfirmware? If so what does it change it too?
This machine has been upgraded to 10.4.6 if that matters.
Also I can access all of the drives and manipulate files with no problems at all, so all of the drives are working correctly.

On my B&W I have to boot into OS9.2.2 first, then boot from the CD from there. Fortunately I have the old 6 gig hard-drive set up as all OS9.2.2.

L512 won´t boot

Hi everyone,
my laptop L512 with WIndows 8.1 won´t boot. Have no idea why. Tried Ubuntu, it won´t boot either ("Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. [4294667.918000] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 0 of device 0000:00:1f:6"). Works the same for graphical safe mode Ubuntu. The only way when it boots up is using system rescue cd 4.5.2.
Keeps switching between "Microsoft logo and spinning loading circle" and "Microsoft logo and Preparing automatic repair..." every restart.
Tried recovery/reinstallation using Windows 8 64-bit Instalation DVD - does not help (reads from the DVD for a while but then stops reading and the computer remains turned on, all the time I can see only Microsoft logo and spinning loading circle).
BIOS updated, MemTest86 (the newest) passes, hard drive diagnostics in BIOS passes.
Does anyone have the same problem? Thanks everyone for help.

DVD drive won't boot from Leopard or Tiger disks

Hi,
I have had some issues booting from the OS install disks with my DVD drive, is it the drive or is it the software?
Can this be fixed?

There are known issues with some Leopard discs not booting, but if your Tiger disc won't boot either, I would say you probably have a defective optical drive.

Another 10.4.7 problem: Won't boot up, won't repair disk

Seems I'm not the only one experiencing problems with the 10.4.7 update, but I haven't found a post about my specific problem.
I had some of the already mentioned problems, like an overall slow system and applications (Mail) not starting up. I did the first restart after the update, and my iMac booted normally. Then when I noticed those problems I attempted another reboot, and since then it won't get past the "Starting Mac OS X..." loading window with the blue progress bar.
Now, I already tried a disk permissions repair before the reboot, which froze up. I then started disk utility from the OSX DVD and tried a disk repair, which failed: "Macintosh HD could not be repaired after 3 attempts" with the "Underlying task reported an error". I read in the support documents on this page where it said I should use fsck instead, so I booted Single User Mode and tried fsck, but it gave the same error.
I also tried an "Archive and Install" which gave me something like "Install not possible at this time, please try again".
The safe mode won't boot either, it just freezes at the grey spinning wheel and the grey apple logo.
Unfortunately I don't have a backup, so I am pretty much confined to somehow fixing my existing installation, or doing an archive and install.
So, any suggestions on how I can boot up again?

Did you update your backup first and then check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc before installing the 10.4.7 update?
If not, sounds like the hard drive had some directory problems which can go unnoticed prior to installing a major OS update such as 10.4.7 but will be brought to the surface by installing the update.
If there is a hard drive directory problem that cannot be successfully repaired by DFA repair, the problem is substantial and your options are as follows:
Use a more substantial repair utility such as Disk Warrior which is highly regarded/recommended for OS X with no guarantee but DW has been known to work miracles.
Using the Tiger install package that shipped with your Mac, reformat the hard drive HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled (which erases the hard drive) and re-install Tiger and all 3rd party applications and then restore all data from your backup.

G4 PowerBook won't boot unless I press Option key - powers off after 20secs

When booting up, my PowerBook only gets as far as the initial black screen and audio chime. After approx. 20 seconds the hard disk/super-drive dies with a high-pitched squeak, just before it was supposed to show the grey screen and then the Apple logo.
If I hold down the Option key, it boots up fine! However, Option-V fails to display the Verbose mode messages (has only done so once after I flashed the PROM, has not done it since.)
I've re-installed Tiger 10.8.4, flashed the PROM, removed the battery and reset the Power Management Unit with 5-second power-switch, but still no change.
Could it be caused by a problem with a faulty video DVI adaptor or socket? (plugs in directly under the power switch - I got an unwanted power-down message as I unplugged the adaptor tonight). The last time the machine worked ok was when I had it plugged in to a multimedia projector throught the DVI adapter.

I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the OS.
* A clone of the OS on another disk boots fine - this would not boot if the issue was a system one.
* A vanilla Snow Leopard install on the same (not working disk, but 2nd partition) won't boot either. If the issue was with the system this one would boot.
* Erasing this second partition didn't help.
(I've already done all the above suggestions using Single user mode etc.)

However, when I use Fdisk my disk reports a negative size:

However, it also does this with another 1.5TB disk I have suggesting that the size of the disk is a problem. Is there another way to make the disk 'active' as this seems to be where the problem lies.

HP Disk Sanitizer won't boot

Recently downloaded & burned HP Disk Sanitizer to CD. When I tried to use it, it supposedly was on CD, but it wouldn't show any files. So, I downloaded it to a flash / thumb drive. Now I can see the files, but it won't boot either. I have an HP Envy dv7 with Windows 8.

If you are running HP's preinstalled WIndows 8, or if you installed it yourself with SecureBoot, you may need to go into BIOS and configure Legacy Boot mode.

IMac 2007 won't boot

I have a strange problem.
My 24" iMac 2007 won't boot. It won't boot either from CD/DVD or anything. It will display the white screen with the Apple logo, and the spinning wheel under it, until the spinning wheel will stop spinning. Using my old Linux knowledge, I find that it seems like it freezes on "Login Window Application". Before this happened the iMac would occationally freeze, creating strange wave-patterns across the screen.
I have tried the following:
1) safe mode - same result
2) reset NVRAM - same result
3) single user - I can fix the filesystem, delete loginmanager files - same result
4) boot from Apple CD - same result
Every time the computer hangs, the strange waves will appear on the screen. My guess it is the video card that's causing this - and I need to replace it.
Can anyone give me heads an idea to confirm my suspicion - or to find the real culprit?

OK, thanks, that was a helpful reply.
Somewhere in my browsing, I gathered that any Mac OS install disk would have the AHT. After searching around, I found the CD/DVD.
After extended testing, the AHT says nothing's wrong, but I find two things strange:
1) the AHT tells me that my memory is 1 GB, while it is 2 GB.
2) the AHT tells me nothing about my HDD - as if it's not there.....
I make two conclusions from that; namely that one RAM block is faulty and the HDD is invisible seen from AHT. The latter would stress me immensely, if I hadn't seen the entire drive from single user mode before. There could be some faulty sectors though that would mean that the OS is behaving strangely.
Please advise on hints on where you would go next - anyone?

Can I set up an external drive so it can boot either PPC or Intel machines?

I have a LaCie external drive with Firewire 1 and 2 and USB2 interfaces. I hoped to creat bootable partitions for both architectures and boot either one using the appropriate interface. I seem to be stumped by the partitioning schemes. It appears that if I partition with GUID I can ONLY boot from, an Intel machine, and that conversely, if I partition with Apple Partition Map I CAN'T boot from an Intel machine. Is this actually the case? Is there a workaround?

Install Mac OS X 10.5 on a PowerPC Mac to a drive partitioned as APM. Any other configuration would be tricky or impossible to get to work.
The resulting single system can boot up any G4, G5, or Intel Mac older than it, but won't contain the Boot Camp Assistant.

I don't know how to start my iMac up. I don't even know what a boot disk is! Several days ago I tried to run Boot Camp but couldn't continue because I didn't have a Windows program to install si I'm not sure what happened. Can somebody please help me out? Thanks.

I'm getting this message again. When I restart using the option key everything is ok. When the computer goes to sleep it has the above message. Is there a setting I need to turn off so this doesn't happen all the time? Thanks.

Installing Windows 7 on iMac via external superdrive resultes in "No bootable device-insert boot disck an dpress any key".

I previously had Windows 7 on my Mac, but removed it after returning from deployment because it had a virus that I could not remove. The only way to remove was to insert a CD/DVD with the anti-virus on, but in my absence, the optical drive was not cleaned and did not work. I had only been using partition for college, so I removed it.
Now, six months later I am trying to re-instal Windows, but after creating the partition and inserting the disk into the external Superdrive, when Bootcamp reboots I get "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". Nothing happens, I can't even type on the screen. I can reboot to Mac via the alt-option key fine, and I can see the drives, the Windows CD, etcetera, but nothing works. When I go back to Mac, Bootcamp won't work unless I delete the partition over from scratch, but I'm getting the same result.
Is the computer looking for the internal optical drive (which doesn't work, and can only be repaired by sending the whole thing back to Apple)? Is there a way to default to the external optical drive?

Problems with Bootcamp Assistant: no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I got a problem setting up Windows 7 on my recently bought 13" MacBook Pro (2,3Ghz Core i5).
I used the bootcamp assistent to create a partition of 50GB on my Mac, everything is fine until now. I insert the Windows 7 disk and follow the instructions. But when I restart in spite of starting the installation of Windows 7, a black screen appears with a note saying "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". To exit this screen I then have to restart my Computer again, holding down the alt-key. In the following window I can just chose my Mac-Harddrive to boot from, the partition is not shown.
I used the software actualization tool to update to version 10.6.7 which is the most recent one i think.
The Windows 7 CD I use is actually a burned one. My University is a member of the msdn academic alliance and therefore offers me to download microsoft software for my work. I stress out that this is absolutly legal, I will only be allowed to use the software unitl I finished my studyings.
So as I said, I downloaded the Version of Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (x64) on my computer and then burned on a DVD. I want to add, that the file I downloaded turned out to be an iso file. At first, I just burned this file on a DVD but since it turned out that i got the above mentioned message, I burned a second DVD with the actual files of the iso (with foldernames like autorun.inf, boot, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi, efi, setup.exe, sources support, and upgrade)
I dont know if these details are of any relevance, but i guess it may be useful since I believe that the burning thing could cause the problems.
I have already browsed the Forum for quite some time now, but I didnt find a case with the exact same problem that I have, so I decided to rather ask you for help now instead of killing my brain like I did before (and I dont really have a clue neither of Macbooks nor of Windows-Computers, its always try and error for me)
I hope somebody can come up with some helpful ideas or a solution.

The Windows 7 CD I use is actually a burned one. My University is a member of the msdn academic alliance and therefore offers me to download microsoft software for my work. I stress out that this is absolutly legal, I will only be allowed to use the software unitl I finished my studyings.
Apple Disk Utility won't do a proper job and won't work (and it varies, some can start the install but fails later) Has to be burned at 2X Reduced Burn Speed

I'm running an early-2008 MacBook (13-inch) that has previously had Windows Vista and Windows 7 installed to it through Bootcamp over the years.
A few weeks ago I did a fresh reinstall of OS X Lion (10.7.5) and decided to reinstall Windows 7 as well. I deleted all the partitions and started afresh. However, upon trying to reinstall Windows 7 I've become a wee bit stuck.
Bootcamp works fine at first - it lets me partition the HDD without any issues (the partition is MS-DOS - FAT32), but when it reboots it gives me a message 'No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key' against a black screen. I've never seen this message before and it won't let me continue with the installation. I'm able to get back into OS X by pressing the option key upon reboot.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? As I said I've used Bootcamp several times in the past on this machine without any problems. The only difference between then and now is that my Superdrive no longer works so I'm using an external DVD drive. However, the error happens regardless of whether it's plugged in.

For Macs with built-in Optical drives, it must be functional for a Windows installation/installer to work. You will also need a USB2 flash drive.
On such Macs, the BCA sets the boot device to be the non-functional Optical drive, which is why you see a No boot device message.
