No Bootable Disk Error

I have had this computer since August 2012. I have recently been getting a "No bootable disk" error when starting/restarting. I hold down the option key, select the SSD, and it boots normally. The first time it happened I kinda freaked, now it just ****** me off. It is NOT something that should happen on a machine as new and pricey as this thing is.
Anybody else heving this issue?

Try to restart the system while holding down the OPTIONS key.  This should allow access to the recovery partition. Select recovery and boot from that partition and use the disk utilities app to see if it can fix any disk error. after that try to reboot normally.  If there is still a problem you might try to reinstall the OS fresh - I hope you have been making regular backups of your data with Time Capsule, a back up drive or cloud.  These are the first steps I'd take, but then it might be a hardware failure of your drive. Use the Apple Hardware on your install DVD to check the drive. If the drive has failed, you can repace it yorself or take it in for Apple Service.  I recently replaced my drive with a Seagate Blue 1TB 5400 RPM drive in my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro (5,5) and it works great!

  • Bootcamp-No Bootable Disk Error

I have a Windows 7 on my Bootcamp. It worked flawlessly until when I tried to import my Bootcamp to Parallel. On the Parallel, it said No Bootable Disk so I quited Parallels Desktop and tried booting my Windows 7 on my Bootcamp. And it is giving the same error.

Thanks Bob! My problem was that I was following advice from elsewhere on the internet that said I should burn a DVD in UDF format when in fact just burning it using disk utility in ISO made it work. Thank you so much!

  • 'No bootable disk' error message when installing Windows7 with Bootcamp

    Hey,
It seems so many people have had this problem which I am having now, I've tried searching for a solution that works but to no avail. So I'll give as much detail to this problem in the hope that someone knows the answer!
When running bootcamp assistant in order to install Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro (running Lion), I am able to go through all the steps - create USB installer, download software and partition hard drive. However, when the computer restarts I am faced with the black screen displaying "No bootable device - insert disk and press any key to continue". Nothing seems to work!
I've tried using a DVD instead of a usb to install Windows, using a burned copy of the ISO disk image (in UDF format) of Windows and I've tried using a sony and a san disk USB. I've tried holding down the option key on start up to see if I can select the disk manually but nothing appears (just my hard drive and the recovery mode).
Any help would be really appreciated! I'm in need of windows in order to run some programs to carry out data analysis on endangered species for research.

  • Bootcamp Install, No Bootable Disk

    Hi,
I was just in the process of installing Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro Late 2011 15" when after i partioned the hard drive, and restarted i had the no bootable disk error, with the black screen. I was attempting to use the Windows 8 ISO on a USB stick to boot, and presuming that it wasn't reading the ISO on the usb stick went on to burn the ISO onto a disk instead. But that hasn't worked either.
I'm now in a sort of limbo where i can't remove the partition that has nothing on, as the boot camp assistant won't allow me to remove it, and there is a device called Bootcam sitting in my Devices tab in Finder with the 125GB partition.
When I shut my mac down now it doesn't even attempt to go to the No Bootable Disk screen but goes straight to Mountain Lion.
Is there anyway I can restore the hard drive to the single volume and try bootcamp again? Or even get the burned disk working with the Windows 8 iso on?
I'm really struggling here so any help will be much appreciated.

Edit: I've managed to return the hard drive to a single volume,
I'd like to point out i'm using a MSDN copy of Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit,
Is there anything obvious that I did wrong the first time? I recall the bootcamp assistant not being able to find the ISO before i partioned the hard drive, until I chose to mount the ISO from the USB stick. And then obviously when i tried to boot it it wasn't mounted anymore. But then surely when i burned the ISO onto the disk it should have read it from there?

    "No Bootable Disk" Error Message
I determined my hard drive was bad and was able to create the 4 recovery disks.  I installed a new 500GB WD Scorpio Blue hard drive.  I ran the recovery disks, which formatted the drive and installed the original software.  At the end of hte 4th disk, it says to remove the CD and restart. Upon restart, I get the message, "No bootable disk."
I reset the BIOS to factory settings, ran hard and memry tests and both checked out OK.  Using DOS prompt, I ran "dir c:" and there are 7 DIRs with only 59,704,172,544 bytes free (shouldnt there be 400+ GB?)
I then created a Windoes 7 - 64 bit repair disk from my desktop.  After choosing English, there are two Operating Systems listed - 1) OS: Windows Setup, Prt Size: 69631MB, Location: (Unknown) Local Disk, and 2) OS: Windows 7 Home Basic (recovered), Part Size: 69631 MB, Location: (C Local Disk.
I chose #2 and it found a problem with the boot files and corrected them.  I restarted wihout CD, but still, "No boot disk".  I re-ran the repair disk and chose "StartupRepair", but it found nothing wrong. I even tried choosing #1, but the message I go there was something like, "recovery is unable to correct this problem, do you want to send info to Microsoft".
I suspect there is something amiss with the partitiob, but again, when I ran the recovery, it formatted the new drive and installed files.

Get Partition Wizard Bootable CD ISO and ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd and boot from it. Delete partitions, create one and format. Next try booting from Recovery again.
Be sure that the wireless is turned on when running Recovery.

  • No Bootable Device - Insert Boot Disk Error...

Ok so today I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit on my 750GB Toshiba HDD in my Optibay and was installed successfully, installed all the Drivers from Windows Support flash drive and when I try to reboot into Windows 7 I get the "No Bootable Device - Insert Boot Disk Error" everytime!! lol What the heck is going on here??

So, I encountered the same problem...
When I click the icon in bootcamp to install windows, after a bit of activity the Windows installation disc was spit put, the screen goes black and the error "No Bootable Device Insert Book Disk Press Any Key to Continue" appears on the screen. And nothing else but using the OSX installation disc helps.
I realised that the windows installation disc did not even spin up.
So what I did... I went back to OSX, reinserted windows installation disc, went to system preferences, selected the windows cd as a start up disc and locked it against the changes.
After that I went back to bootcamp and clicked gain to install windows. Everything worked fine now.
I just tried this and it didn't work for me. I keep getting a black screen with a cursor flashing in the upper left hand corner.

  • Disk Error, Hal.dll Error, No bootable device error - Every other error.

    Hi,
I've been trying for ages to install xp using bootcamp. I have windows xp sp1, which i've slipstreamed to create an SP2 version. I also have access to the family backups of every OS we've ever bought, including a mix cd of windows xp MCE, XP home, XP professional - all SP2.
I moved to the mac a year or so ago - I've installed windows more times than I've rolled out of bed in the morning.
I had it working back when I was running Tiger - I upgraded to leopard - decided I wanted to try a reinstall of windows, formatted the drive and followed all the steps to install.
The main issue is that when I insert the windows install CD - it never gives me a chance to format the disk. I tried installing parallels and using that to boot up XP, and it does give me an chance - but after that install is finished I get the Hal.dll error.
I removed the bootcamp drive but after installing refit - it still shows up on the boot menu. Somehow, my HDD's GUID partition table & MBR for the windows partition is messed up.
At the end of the day - I've tried everything I can think of to install windows. And it just won't go. It used to work - what's changed? Any suggestions?
    Cheers in advance.

I too had problems with Hal.dll and "Disk Error".
Installing XP on my Mac Mini with 10.5.1 Leopard (fresh install on a new HDD), I got the Hal.dll error (my 2nd time with this lovely error, the first being on a iMac with Leopard). According to Billbear from this thread:
    http://forum.onmac.net/showthread.php?t=2793&page=5
You will get Hal.dll when you try to install XP on a partition that isn't the last partition on the disk. I tried this solution, and it worked for me. I previously had:
    1) Leopard
    2) XP
    3) User partition
    And changed it to:
    1) User partition
    2) Leopard
    3) XP
Next, however, I got a different error -- the dreaded "Disk Error". I tried the Apple support solution (formatting as NTFS instead of converting from FAT to NTFS), but I got the same error. I read somewhere (can't remember which thread, since I looked at so many) that you might get the problem if XP wasn't installing on C: drive. So I changed my partitioning from
    1) User partition (FAT)
    2) Leopard (HFS+)
    3) XP (FAT)
    To:
    1) User partition (HFS+)
    2) Leopard (HFS+)
    3) XP (FAT)
The installer saw the XP partition as C: and was able to install smoothly (Quick reformatting to NTFS). I then used Disk Utility to change the User partition from HFS+ to FAT, and everything works fine!

  • "Firmware","disk error","can't mount it": Is this the end?

"Firmware","disk error","can't mount it": Is this the end? My iShuffle is DEAD?
I think it's dead but as my last breath i will try to find any different solution before to bury it. Sorry for my English, I am Brazilian, but I will try do my best for you understand me. It’s me who needs help.
    I have an iShuffle 512MB (purchase OUT2005), a mini iPod 6GB (purchase SET2005) and a PC running Windows XP SP2 (ADM Athlon XP 2600, HD 120GB, 512MB RAM, 6 USB 2.0).
My mini iPod 6GB (miP6) works correctly with iTunes 5 or 6, with its original factory software and settings and now with iPod update October 2005. I don’t know if everything started when I first connected them two at the same time but they were working fine in the beginning.
One day my iShuffle, connected to my PC USB and transferring music from iTunes, , started to turn off and turn on, that is, iTunes showed it connected and then disconnected even I wasn’t touching it. When it came back in iTunes I started to try to transfer music to it and this time it came off, and then came back without that music I tried to transfer in. This situation didn’t go better even when I try to change my iPod to the other five USB ports, neither in my Notebook (PC WinXP SP2). I have reinstalled iPod with the original CD software, reinstalled iTunes and all the things I read at this forum. The situation was going worse until now, I don’t know why, I can’t use it anymore. The current situation, after all I did – and I will explain what was - is:
    1) When I connect it to a USB in my PC or Notebook, windows recognize it as a mass storage device and iTunes don’t start automatically.
    2) I go to windows explorer and there it is, “Drive E: removable disk”, but…
    3) But it looks like a Drive, with no disk in it. It’s a kind of a CD-ROM drive with NO CD inside it. This way, I can’t format it because I can’t format a drive, just a disk, even partition it.
    4) When I connect it to other PCs (winXP), with no iPod software installed, the systems first recognize it as Apple iPod and then as USB Mass Storage device, but the same way at my PC: OKB.
    5) When I try to run iPod Updater I receive most of the times this message: “Can’t mount it”. Some times it recognizes it as an iPod but I receive the message, during the restoring original software process, “Firmware update failure. Disk write error”, as you can see here: http://www.ivan.med.br/ishuffle.jpg.
    6) So, to try to use Updater, at this time, is out of question. If there is anyway to save it, I think it must be through other software or adjustment, I don’t know. I will show you a brief of what I have done until now:
    “Windows-try”
    - Current updater. Reinstalled old updater and run too. Reinstalled iTunes and all this stuff.
    - Changed USB connection and reinstall USB drives.
    - Installed iShuffle at another machine the same way described in iShuffle Manual.
    - Tried to format it using windows explorer format tool and other no-windows native tools.
    - Used partition magic and other tool to try to build anything in it.
    - Used Click Administrative Tools, double-clicked Computer Management, and then clicked Disk Management in the left pane. Nothing appeared. When I connect my miP6 it is there, and everything works fine. Just remember.
    - Used Windows tools (CMD tools) as DiskPart and MountVol. Nothing.
    “DOS-Try”
    - I used a bootable win98 formatted floppy disk, with USB ASPI support, and the system recognized the two USB devices I have connected that time: my Apple “DEAD” iShuffle and my Pendrive. But it could not assign a letter to iSuffle device, only for the pendrive. I’ve used DUSE software too and the same answer, even with an instruction INT13 that allow me to use Fdisk. But even Fdisk could not recognize the iPod as a Disk.
So, this is my story. If anyone could understand it and know anything better than to bury it, send me your message, PLEASE. If you want to send me any software or tool you think can help me, my e-mail address

Same problem in the US...after 1 week of use, hit the reverse button while playing and it stopped, never to resume. Tried the latest software updater for both the ipod and itunes, and received the Ipod Service and Can't Mount Errors. After multiple attempts, all I get is the updater screen stating Initializing.. Additionally, when I tried to reinstall, it stated that the ipod needed to be formatted, yet I received a message that the ipod couldn't communicate. Seems like too many people are having the same issue!

  • No bootable disk after installing Windows

I tried to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp on my Intel Single Core Mac Mini, and after having an error message I couldn't boot anymore. All I was getting was a black screen with the cursor flashing. I took the opportunity to upgrade to a bigger hard drive. I got the older hard drive out, deleted the windows partition, and cloned the original mac partition onto the new hard drive. All I get now is instead a "no bootable disk - insert bootable disk and press any key" error message. I have tried to boot from the original Install DVD, but no key combination works on start up. I tried C, Option key, Command-Option-Shift-Del, but it still goes to the black screen. The mouse is still working, as I can get the DVD out if I click the left button on start up but no keyboard seems to work (I tried to original Apple ones). I have got the new hard drive out, put it in an enclosure, formatted it with my laptop, and tried to install OSX from the disk but still can't boot from disk and still get error message. Any help?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use BootCamp. There's a BootCamp Support Community where everybody uses BootCamp. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Disk error that I can't repair despite logical steps

    1. I ran Disk Utility within OSX and detected a disk error but the option to repair was grayed out
    2. I ran my back up system to ensure I have an up-to-date clone on my LaCie external HD
    3. I booted Norton Utilities from CD which couldn't repair the error
    4. I ran Apple Hardware Extended test which said there were no hardware problems
    5. I began wondering if it was a software issue rather than a hardware one...
    6. I booted Disk Utility from my Tiger Install DVD which also detected a disk error but could not fix it
    7. Thinking that reinstalling Tiger might do the trick, I tried to 'Archive and Install' Mac OS X Tiger from the DVD twice, but each time it was unable to complete the install and asked me to start over again
Any ideas how to fix this error?
I am working quite intensively with iMovie at the moment, which crawls on my 3 year old 1 GHz PowerBook. One file has grown to a whopping 18 GB in size. Could this be part of the problem? I performed permissions repair, disk verification and defrag successfully last week before starting on my iMovie project, so the system was pretty well optimised, I thought.

Thanks, Miriam. I regularly run Utilities to ensure my system stays in good condition. Especially as I work with images a lot and sometimes - like now - with video. So, it was routine maintenance I guess. However, some applications have been a little slow to open or struggled to open files recently as well.
Regarding Disk Warrior etc, being an individual rather than a corporate user, obviously I'd rather avoid spending the money unless I absolutely have to. In addition, being in UK, it may take time for the disk to arrive and I don't think my nearest Apple Store stocks Disk Warrior - it's not on the UK online store anyhow (strangely). TechTool Pro is more expensive still. Sorry if I sound stingy, I just am being careful with my money. If I need to buy Disk Warrior, of course I will.
Thanks, A Brody, for the welcome. I regularly clone my entire system so I have a bootable backup, but thanks for the reminder anyway!
I appreciate the comments from both of you about Norton in this regard.
Since the Apple Hardware Extended test indicated no hardware faults, am I right to think it is probably more to do with software? Or should I be concerned about my hard disk or other hardware?

    Hi,
The new hard drive you have got is completely empty!! You have to restore the laptop to the factory settings with the recovery disks. Go to the BIOS and change the boot order to CD/DVD Rom (press esc at startup and then F10) and save the changes (reboot). After that insert the disk no.1 to the optical drive and reboot again (press ctrl+alt+delete). If you have the right recovery disks, it should boot up and start the recovery...

  • Unable to install mountain lion...disk error??

Guys..is there any way to skip this mountain lion installation? i dont understand why i got
this disk error message when i tried to upgrade in Mountain Lion even though my MBP 2011 LION is OK.
I need your expertise here..Please!! Thank you!! :(

Just quit the installer - you should be able to do that. There should be a file still in your Applications folder named "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app". Just leave it alone for a moment. Then download Lion DiskMaker and make a bootable USB install flash drive and/or DVD.
Then start up using your Recovery partition (Command and R keys held down on boot) and select Disk Utility and verify and, if need, repair your disk. Reboot and try installing Mountain Lion using your USB installer. Everything should work fine - unless there are errors found on your disk that can't be repaired.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
