"no bootable HFS partition" displays at startup

A couple days ago, I repartitioned my secondary HD--not doing anything with the primary boot partition. I then ran a Retrospect duplicate, cloning the primary boot partition to a corresponding partition on the secondary drive (within the first 8GB, of course). The next day (following a shutdown after an automated backup operation), when I tried to boot, I got a white (not gray) screen that repeatedly displayed "no bootable HFS partition", and then went to a gray screen with the flashing question mark disk icon.
I was able to option-boot and get it to start up under an OS 9.2.2 partition, but keep getting the "no bootable HFS partition" message every time I try to boot from an OS X (10.2.8) partition. I tried repairing disk permissions and verifying the boot partition (using Disk Utility while booted from the Jag install disk)--doesn't help. Cmd-S or Cmd-V booting doesn't work; the message kicks in before the cmd-S or cmd-V is recognized.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pete

Allan,
I think that's probably it (see my previous post from earlier today). After reinstalling Jag on the secondary boot partition, things are working as they should--even after another Retrospect duplicate to that partition.
What's still a mystery is why the reinitialization of the secondary boot partition also caused the (untouched) primary boot partition to stop working. I can only speculate that it might have something to do with my primary drive being jumpered as slave (was the only way I could get the G3 to see both drives). If the G3 is initially going after boot blocks on the master drive (whether that drive contains the designated startup partition or not), that could explain it.
Oh well, I'll have to see whether Dantz has published a Retrospect fix for this problem (or whether they are otherwise aware of it). If I find out anything, I'll post back to this thread.

  • How do I change the name of my Mac partition in the startup menu?

    Hi,
So when I transferred my data to my new hard drive, I originally called my hard drive "changetitle" so I wouldn't confuse it with my other drive also named Macintosh HD.
Now that I have my new drive installed, I changed the name to "Macintosh HD" but when I hold Option to use bootcamp on startup, I notice that my HFS+ partition still has the name "changetitle".
Any way to change it? Thanks!

System Preferences->Sharing sets the network name of the computer. The issue here is the name of the startup volume as seen in Startup manager (the option key start up mode).
That should be changeable from the Finder: highlight the name of the volume, press return, & type in the new name. Is this what was done?

  • MacBook Pro HFS+ Partition not mountable in Win 8.1 after removal of FileVault2

I did not read the manual and installed Windows 8.1 Pro on Mavericks on a Macbook Pro. I left FileVault2 enabled. As expected, the HFS+ partition would not show.
I then removed the FileVault2. But the partition is still not mounted. The HFS+ Windows driver works, since external HFS+ drives (Thunderbolt and USB) mount fine. In admin tools, the partition shows fine, but the option to assign a drive letter is dimmed.
I did a disk utiltity repair, but it also did not solve the problem.

right, that's fine, we've encrypted both ways - OSX (filevault) first then Windows (bitlocker) and vice versa - both times the 'visibility' of the other partition behavior is consistent
    if both are encrypted
you cannot see either partition from the other OS
you cannot see Windows as a startup disk in OSX system preferences
you CAN see OSX as a startup disk in Windows boot camp control panel

The install went smoothly and the disk was mounted and formatted correctly. But after the install of the Mac OS I restart my pc and boot into Mac. Immediatly a message comes up saying HFS+ Partition Error. I have tried tons of things to fix it but everywhere I go it tells you have to fix erros related to intalling Windows onto a Mac. But luckily my Windows Xp still boots up fine. Someone out please help me!!

  • HFS+ partitions not being detected on Windows 7

    Hello Apple Discussions community,
I recently bought a Mid 2014 Retina Macbook Pro, and installed Windows 7 on it using Bootcamp, I installed the appropriate Bootcamp drivers including the one responsible for HFS+ support (verified that they were installed correctly by looking at the /Windows/System32/drivers directory), and all updates available for Windows, but the Mac OS X HFS+ partition doesn't show up in Windows Explorer as it would on my older MacBook Pro late 2011, is there anything I may have missed to get HFS+ partitions to show up?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Boot Camp error: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

    Hi!
    I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.  The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • How do I grow an HFS partition on an external USB disk?

I have a USB disk, MBR partitioned, with one ext4 and one HFS+ partition. There is 250GB of unpartitioned space following the HFS+ partition, into which I'd like to grow for Time Machine use.
    bash-3.2# diskutil list
    -snip-
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk1
       1:                      Linux Backup                  549.1 GB   disk1s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Mackup                  233.1 GB   disk1s2
    -snip-
diskutil refuses to touch the partition, probably because it's MBR ("FDisk") partitioned:
    bash-3.2# diskutil resizeVolume disk1s2 limits
Error obtaining resizing information (is this a Mac OS 9 compatible "wrapped" HFS volume?)
How am I going to fix this? Assuming I am unable to copy the contents of my HFS partition to another temporary place.
    Thanks

I replaced my MBR with a GPT partition table using gdisk on Linux.
Now diskutil correctly identifies it as GPT:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk2
1:       Microsoft Basic Data Backup                  549.1 GB   disk2s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Mackup                  233.1 GB   disk2s2
however it still refuses to touch it
    bash-3.2# diskutil resizeVolume disk2s2 limits
Error obtaining resizing information (is this a Mac OS 9 compatible "wrapped" HFS volume?)

  • Garbled display at startup when connecting to External Monitor - MBP Early 2011.

    Hi,
When i connect my Early 2011 MBP to an external display i get a garbled display at startup.
I then have to disconnect the hdmi cable to the external monitor, after which the display clears up (on the laptop) and then when i reconnect the external monitor, it works fine. The problem with this process is that i have to do it each time i start/boot my laptop with the external display connected. The display mode is currently set to mirror displays if that helps.
Would appreciate any advice users with this kind of set up can provide. Thank you in advance.

    Welcome!!
It could be that you are using the external in "mirrored mode" with the res set above the max res for the MBP screen. On my Late 2007 MBP, the F7 key toggles between mirrored mode and "spanning" (or "extended desktop") mode and System preferences will let you set the two displays independently. I use an external monitor in spanning mode and have not experienced a problem as I have the internal display prefs set to a comfortable res for its hardware.

  • I accidentally formated the hfs+ partition to FAT

I accidentally formated the hfs+ partition to FAT.
That's right, bummer. Now, is there anything I can do?
    Here is the scenario -
I cannot get it to mount or start.
I opened the case to pull the battery ribbon.
When the battery is connected there is a continuous loop of the initial boot. black screen with apple logo, hard drive continues to spin.
Is there anyway I can get it to mount to reformat it? God I hope so.
other thing I thought of is to buy a sata to usb converter but I don't think that would fit the tiny connector.

  • Windows 7 not recognizing HFS+ partition

Is there support for Windows 7 to read the HFS+ partition of the hard drive? If so, Windows is not seeing it. Also, does it only apply yo the internal drive or will it read external HFS+ formatted drives?

I installed 3.1 update it and it now reads the internal Mac partition.

  • Unmerge hfs+ partition

    hello.
I stupidly merged 2 hfs+ partitions using diskutil without reading all of the instructions.
I would now love to recover the data on the second partition. I'm currently trying to use data recovery tools to do this, but I'm not having much luck finding anything other than plists and pngs that I did not create.
Is it possible to unmerge the partitions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would go out of my way to thank you.

I'm assuming the 'diskutil mergePartition' merely flagged the files as deleted, as the process took less than a second to complete, so, in both apps I'm using the 'deleted file recovery' function.
It did a bit more than flag the files as deleted. It destroyed the file system directory of the second partition & told the first partition's file system all the second's file space was available for new files. If you then continued to use the first partition, new files (like any downloads of the file recovery software you tried) may have been written to that now freed up file space.
That's why the first rule of data recovery is to quit using the drive with the lost files on it ASAP.
The file recovery software the hatter mentioned may still be able to recover many of the old files not yet overwritten with new ones, but it is very important that you stop using the drive immediately. That means not starting up from it & not mounting it for any other reason except as directed by the file recovery software.
You will need a second drive for the recovery process. It would have been far better to already have one & be using it for backups, which could have made all of this unnecessary, but now that you have learned the importance of backups, you can use the second drive for that once the recovery attempt has done all that it can.

  • Snow leopard messed up my external drives HFS partition table.

I bought a 500gb Verbatim external store 'n' go hard drive already formated in HFS+ with FW and USB3 interface and had been using fine with over FW for a couple of months. Once when the cable was unplugged by mistake (The sockets are all jigly, don't know why) I couldn't mount the drive but then I used the USB cable and it worked fine.
I kept on using in on FW till one day I was low on battery while I was using the external drive and my mac just switched off! It doesn't, for a misterious reason give me the low on power message anymore. When switched the computer back on my mac couldn't read the drive. I was getting an actual error message saying that the drive was not readable. Tried the usb cable but I was getting the same message. I went to the genius bar and by using disk warrior we were able to get the folders and the files on the root of the drive but nothing inside those folders and there should be 4 levels of folders.
Now my guess is that something somehow messed up the partition table but I might be wrong. Does anyone know of any tool or any way I could restore my lost data?
Any help will be very appreciated!

It is still an NTFS partition and it cannot be read to reformat unless the disk is repartitioned . An entire NTFS disk could be repartitioned but I don't think one existing non readable partition can be converted to an HFS partition which is why OSX has the error.

  • Shrink HFS partition and extend NTFS partition with Disk Utility?

My 10.7 iMac has two partitions: HFS+ & NTFS. The NTFS was set too small and is nearly full and I want to shrink the echoingly under-used HFS and add the resulting excess to the NTFS one.  Is this practicable?  I can see via Disk Utility that the Mac partition can be shrunk but no way is shown for modifying the NTFS side.  Maybe using a Linux tool is advised?

You can't. If you try either Windows or OS X or both will no longer boot. You can try a aftermarket disk partitioning program but most that work on HFS partition don't work for Windows and those that work for Windows don't work on Mac extended partitions.
The only real option is to backup the Windows partition with something like Win Clone then use Boot Camp assistant to remove Windows and the partition then again to recreate the Win partition in a larger size. After that install windows and then use the Win Clone software to restore Windows.

  • Bootcamp partition now an HFS partition

    Hi folks,
I have a client here who called to say when starting up there was only a Mac option. The Windows option had disappeared.
I checked the hard drive and it looks like the 40GB bootcamp partition is now an HFS+ partition. It is completely empty except for some hidden files. These are the files in the partition.

So correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like someone tried to use the bootcamp partition as a Time Machine backup device. Assuming that's where the com.apple.timemachine.supported file came from.
So the $1,000,000 question here is, if there any possible way to recover that bootcamp partition?
It was used for some financial software and would be amazing to get it back.

com.apple.timemachine.supported just means TM will back it up. I doubt any Windows data is recoverable.
