No Brightness Adjustment, F1 & F2 No Longer Work

I'm puzzled because my PB 17" 1.67ghz display preference pane and F1 and F2 keys will no longer work to adjust the LCD screen brightness. When I purchased the laptop used, Leopard was installed and the brightness adjustment worked. To save hard disk space and run classic, I wiped the hard drive and installed Tiger (10.4) and then ran updates (10.4.11). When I boot in Leopard, the keys work, in Tiger they don't. I don't have the original restore CDs. Is there any thing that I can do to get the pb to recognize the LCD and offer brightness adjustment? Thanks.

I have a dual-boot black MacBook where F1-F2 adjusts brightness just fine in 10.5, but if I boot 10.4 pressing F1 or F2 (or fn-F1 or fn-F2) all do absolutely nothing.
Details below. I did the keyboard-firmware update in 10.5 by the way. Details below.
Does anyone have a work-around for adjusting screen brightness, even a commad-line method?
Details and steps taken: newly-arrived black macbook April 2008 with 10.5 factory installed.
1. Booted 10.5, ran all updates, including the keyboard-firmware update, fixed perms, and verified boot disk.
2. Using 10.5 disk-util, did non-destructive resize of 10.5 partition from entire drive (120gig) down to 76gig. Created 2 new partitions: tiger (50gig), and TimeMach (22gig). After reboot leopard is running find from resized partition, and I zeroed-out the other (Erase, writing zeroes in 10.5-disk-util).
3. Booted new macbook in target mode. From another black mac-book running 10.4.11 with ALL updates, ran CCC-3.1 to copy tiger to empty tiger partition on new mb.
4. Booted new mb, holding down option, and selected tiger partition. Everything works in Tiger as far as I can tell except I can't adjust brightness.)
Go figure.

  • Automatic brightness adjustment not working properly

Hi, i bought a macbook air 2013 in july. about 2 weeks ago i discovered the automatic brightness adjustment and checked it was working correctly. about a week ago i realized it wasnt. i turn the lights off (or cover the sensor next to the camera) and the keyboard light dims instead of increasing its intensity. and the exact opposite happens when the lights are on.
i have already restarted the system managment controller as it is explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 but the problem persists.
and of course i have checked the adjust keybord brightness box in the keyboard settings.
i dont now what else to do. any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hello,

I had this problem two times before and in this cases bios update helped. But now, i have newest BIOS version and i can't update BIOS...Simple restore BIOS properities to default didn't work...I have exactly the same problem on Windows 7 Professional 64bit and Ubuntu Linux 10.10 32bit. Any ideas how to fix this or i must use my warranty?

  • Adjust no longer works since 8.1 update

Since updating to 8.1, the adjust functionality no longer works. That is, when I select a photo and click edit, I get to the edit screen as usual. When I click the adjust button, the floating adjust pane appears. I can move the sliders as usual, but no change occurs. That is, the sliders move, but the photo does not change. If I click "done", the photo still does not change. So, this doesn't appear to be a problem with seeing the adjustment in real time. It appears that adjustments just can no longer be made.
This is true in iPhoto as well as iWeb. That is, I can no longer adjust photos in iPhoto, and when I send the photos to iWeb to make a web page, I cannot use the adjust function in iWeb either.
For reference, I am running iLife '09 version 8.1 on a 1.25GHz G4 iMac with 1GB of RAM. I have installed iLife support 9.0.3, and I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8.
Since I don't recall the exact timing, this problem could have appeared with 10.5.8 or iPhoto 8.1.
I have submitted a bug report, but verion 8.1 isn't an option in the "What version of iPhoto are you using?" selection on that page, so I had to submit it under 8.0.3, the newest version listed.
Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated. If you're having a similar problem, please file a bug report.

  • Flashcards for screen brightness no longer work after BIOS upgrade

I have a Toshiba Satellite T135D/1320S laptop, and last night I upgraded the BIOS to v1.90 under the recently released recall notice.  AFter installing the BIOS, however, the Flashcard brightness controls no longer work. Whenever I press FN-6 or FN-7, the screen brightness Flashcard pops up and the toggle on the slider bar moves back and forth, but the brightness of the screen does not change.
I have disabled and re-enabled the Flashcards as suggested in a separate forum, and I've also downloaded the most recent display driver (AMD display driver v8.615).  Neither effort corrected the problem.
    Anyone have any other suggestions?

Sometimes it helps to reset the machine. With the battery and AC adapter removed, close the Power switch for half-a-minute. Re-attach those, press the Power button to turn the computer on, and then immediately press the F2 key while the Toshiba logo is displayed. Press F9 to restore the BIOS default settings, press F10, and then select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart.
Another things to try is reinstalling the TVAP.

Contact Rhapsody to see if they have or plan to release an update for the app. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?

  • Since updating to v.3.4.5 adjustment brushes no longer work? Please help??

    Hi Guys,
I have just updated to Aperture 3.4.5.
Annoyingly the adjustment brushes and sliders such as "straighten" no longer work. They are added to my adjustments panel when I select them from the drop-down menu, but are accompanied by the sound of the dreaded apple beep (suggesting something is wrong) and do not change the cursor into the appropriate tool, thus preventing me from carrying out these particular adjustments.
If someone has any solutions for this problem, it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

Test again in a different user account with a small test library. Does it still not work for a different user after reinstalling?
And test in your regular account with a small test library.
is it possibly something to do with an incombatiability between the new update and a plug-in?
Which plug-ins are you using? Are they all compatible with Aperture 3.4 and Lion?

  • 10.8.4 Screen Brightness Keys No Longer Work

I ran updates this morning and I assume it updated to 10.8.4 from the app store updates tab.
After this update and booting back up the screen brightness keys no longer work. F1 and F2 keys do nothing and they worked fine before the update.
Anyone else experiencing this? If so know a way to fix it?
    Thanks
    Patrick

I have been having the same issue and even with updates have continued to have the problem. I was able to find a chck box under the keyboard settings that I never noticed before. When checked it only allows you to use the function keys on the top of the keyboard when pressing the fn (function) key. Simply unchecking this (not sure how it got checked in the first place) solved the issue immediately.

I am trying to use the brightness adjustment on a grayscale photoshop CS6 file.  The preview shows the adjustment working and changes the brightness, but when you click to apply the change, it does not apply the adjustment.  I have run into this problem before, although rarely, with some other files over the years and with earlier versions of CS.  I would like to know how to overcome this problem?

Make sure you are viewing your image at 100%. At smaller views, pixels and layers and the way they interact are approximate interpolations and won't show you the actual pixel-for-pixel changes.

the hue/saturation adjustment in my photoshopCS3 no longer works. How can I fix?

    Are your images RGB/8?
Is "Preview" checkmarked in the HSB dialog?
If so, then hold down the Alt key and when the Cancel button changes to Reset, click on it to clear it and set it to defaults.

  • Brightness adjustment in Windows 8 does not work properly on rMBP

Finally Apple has released 10.8.3 and the new bootcamp officially supports Windows 8. I have used it for several days but only one little thing. I don't know if this happens to other users.
The brightness adjustment just has three levels. Dark, level 1 brightness and level 2 brightness. The screen cannot be brighter after these levels. Also there is no Apple brightness level figure showing, instead the windows 8 brighness level figure shows, and the screen goes dark when the brightness level bar goes only half way down.
Here is the example. If I hit the brightness minus button again, the screen goes dark.

Oh I know what the problem is. I tried to uninstall the light sensor driver and everything works fine! In Windows 7 I used to disable the light sensor feature so there was no such problem. I tried to find such setting option in Windows 8 but nothing found so I just uninstall the driver.

  • Adjusting the brightness of G4 400 TiPB doesnt work

    Hi folks,
my Boss´G4 400 Titanium Powerbook recently showed a problem with the F1/F2 Keys. Pressing F1/F2 has no effect - the brightness of the display cant be changed anymore although the other controls, i.e. Volume via F3/F4/F5 work normally. Also the screensigns which appear in the middle of the screen when you change the brightness dont appear anymore, which is unlike other related problems posted here before. The screen itself looks like the brightness is adjusted to a rather dim setting or around a middle setting (kinda hard to tell when you cant change it). Searching other related topics, I found hints that this may be a TiPB related (and known?) issue but I couldnt nail it to the exact issue. After updating to Tiger and then to 10.4.2 the problem didnt show up at first (he updated just after Tiger´s release), everything worked fine until yesterday. Anyone got a clue to what caused this and maybe how to fix it?
    Thank you in Advance
    Dennis

I am experiencing the same problem on my TiPB 400: very dim display, brightness controls on keyboard don't work and don't generate the screen icons, no brightness adjustment slider in the display system preferences panel, as it should be (and was). I went through the usual resets (hardware reset button, PRAM, open firmware).
I occurred just about two days ago, right about after the most recent security and Quicktime update.
I am running 10.4.6 and have been since it became available, without seeing this problem.
Given the fact that there are distinct features missing from the software (icons and control slider), I am not so certain whether this is just a bad inverter. Or is OS X this smart?
Another problem, which may or may not be related:
Just a bit sooner, my airport connection started to fail. I have several computers connected to the same network (typing right now from a !2"PB), so I know it's not the network. I also have an external AriaExtreme wireless card that is also unable to connect, so it is again somewhat less likely to be a hardware failure. This card is recognized by software, but the airport software doesn't seem to be able to control it anymore as it used to do just last week.
    Any suggestions?

  • Under Tiger 10.4 Brightness Adjustment Doesn't Work, Powerbook 17"

After trying Leopard, I decided to go back to Tiger. After installing 10.4 on my Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz the brightness adjustment in the system preferences and the F1 F2 keys do not work. Brightness adjustment is not available even after running all the updates through 10.4.11. If I return to Leopard, the brightness adjustment works again. Any one have any ideas on how to fix it in 10.4? [I don't have the original restore disks]. Thanks.

Not certain, but PRAM or NVRAM resets might do it...

  • The adjustment presets no longer work ... appear grey / not highlighted ... any suggestions

Aperture adjustment presets suddenly do not work ... appear grey / and do not respond to clicks

I also wonder if this is presets you have imported or the ones that Aperture comes with by default? Or, all of them? But, turning off quick preview mode, if it is on, would be a likely culprit, it seems to me.

  • [SOLVED] Broken backlight brightness adjustment on x220 after recent-

    Hi.
I'm no longer able to adjust backlight brightness with hotkeys and xbacklight.
I believe issue appeared after update to linux-3.16.
Brightness adjustment keys are detected correctly in xev.
Echoing brightness value to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness does adjust brightness.
But xbacklight and hotkeys won't do a thing.
I already tried some magic I don't understand: acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_osi=linux. No luck here.
Anyone else with the same issue? Are there any fixes for this?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue here.
I saw a brief mention in the arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight
that says the kernel parameter: video.use_native_backlight=1 is now default in 3.16,
so I added video.use_native_backlight=0 to my kernel parameters and my backlight functionality is back.
awesome thx, worked for me as well. I used the -u option of efibootmgr
    efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L Gentoo3.16.3-rev1 -l "\efi\boot\kernel_3.16.3-rev1.efi" -u "video.use_native_backlight=0"
