No Broadcast SSID on certain AP

WLC 4404 APs1142
I have an AP that I dont want to broadcast our SSID but I do want it their. I want it to broadcast only our guest SSID. I have both in a AP group and can see both but is it possible to disable the broadcast for our SSID but not our guest SSID?

Hi Pedro,
I believe you are confusing yourself with the 4404-100. WLC4402-25 can support up to 25 APs. You can't go more than that.
For the 4404-100, uplink port has a limit of 48(I think) APs. So if you assign one AP Manager IP address to each uplink port, theoretically, you can support almost up to 200 APs.
Hope this helps.

  • Hp6700 Printer: can't connect to D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router when Broadcast SSID is set to NO.

HP6700 Printer:  can't connect to D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router when Router Broadcast SSID is set to NO. My MAC LapTop and HP LapTop both work with the SSID set to NO. If I change the Wireless Router to Broadcast SSID is YES, then the HP6700 Printer can connect to the Wireless Router. I setup the Printer telling it what the SSID and Password were, the same as both of my LapTops, but it never connects, unless I change the Router to broadcast the SSID. Help!

Did you try updating the firmware on the DI-514?
You can also try setting a static IP on the printer, then assign the printer to the static DHCP list in the router interface.
To give your printer a static IP address:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you will have delete and re-add the printer on your Mac.

  • Wdtv not connecting to wifi unless broadcasting SSID

    Greetings from Sunny Spain  8)
I've been using for several years a wd tv live (currently version of firmware: 1.16.13) wirelessly attached to my network (Netgear router). My wifi security is wpa2. I also set my wifi, among other things, to NOT broadcast SSID.
I bought last week an Airport Time Capsule. For now it's working bridged to my Netgear router-modem, who gets the Internet connection. Wifi is supplied by the apple router.
I do have several boxes wirelessly attached to this new wifi: Sonos boxes, a PS3, a Wii, a Linux laptop, a Samsung printer.
But strangely enough I cannot connect my WDTV to this airport/wifi UNLESS I BROADCAST its SSID.
I've checked several times. Strangely enough (at least to me) I can still connect to a hidden SSID if I use my old router.
I've got no trouble getting the other devices (except for the Samsung printer who required a little work) to connect to the hidden SSID apple driven wifi. So methinks this is a bug, unless it's a feature  Is there any kind of workaround available that anyone knows about?
Thanks for reading this. Please forgive my poor grammar skills.

As you are probably already aware hiding the broadcast of a wireless network's SSID is not a fool-proof security measure but tends to introduce new problems ... like your WDTV not being able to connect.
I'm not sure why this is only happening with your new AirPort Extreme and not with your previous Netgear router but it may be due to how each manufacturer implemented this feature. I don't think it is a bug with your AirPort router and I'm not aware of any communications from Apple about it.
By the way, your grammar skills are excelente!

  • Broadcast SSID only on defined Access Points?

I'm using a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 5508, 14x Access Points 1041 and 6x Access Points 1031 in combination with a NCS 1.0.
Is it possible to broadcast SSID'S only on defined Access Points, e.g. AP 1-3,7-10,18? If yes, what have I to do?
    Kind regards
    Kai

Quick question, can you validate the below scenario please
    We have seven SSIDs
WLAN           Dynamc Interface that its mapped to
    WHSE10          VLAN10-10.0.10.0/24
    WHSE20          VLAN20-10.0.20.0/24
    WHSE30          VLAN30-10.0.30.0/24
    WHSE40          VLAN40-10.0.40.0/24
    Office50           VLAN50-10.0.50.0/23
    Office60           VLAN60-10.0.60.0/23
    Guest70           VLAN70-172.16.8.0/23
we have around 40 access points in the warehouse and 20 APs in the office, and we are broadcasting SSIDs everywhere, means office and guest SSID s exist on the WHSE APS and WHSE SSID s exist on office APs.
Does having more SSIDs on the APs affects its power (Signal strength) in anyway?
    APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP- (will add VLAN10,VLAN20,VLAN30,VLAN40 interfaces)
    APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE- (Will add all VLANS-10,20,30,40,50,60 and 70)
APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP-( Will add only office and Guest WLANs- VLAN50,60 and 70)
We won't need to broadcast any WHSE SSIDs in the office area so we will add the Office APS to ----  APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP
The WHSE APS will need to advertise both office and WHSE SSID s but we don't need to broadcast Office SSIDs everywhere in the warehouse, so we assign some APs in WHSE to APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE and some to APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP
How does the client roaming work in the above scenario when they move from APs in APgroup1 to APs in APgroup2 (I don't think this will be any different than normal client roaming from one AP to another AP but I want to make sure)
    Thanks for the help
    Siddhartha

  • Broadcast to non-broadcast SSID change stops laptop connection

We have started to deploy a CAWLAP migrating autonomous to lightweight.  In the configuration, the SSID was broadcast.  Windows PC and mobile devices had no problem connecting.
Now when we changed it to non-broadcast, windows PC can not access while the mobile devices still can!
The controller (5508) is running 7.2.110.
    Any ideas?  Is this bug?

Not a bug... You probably added the SSID to the client when it was broadcasted, so the wireless client is looking for a broadcasted SSID. In windows, you can click connect even if not broadcasted. Or else remove and add the SSID on the clients again. It a client side issue not the wlc.

  • Broadcast and non-broadcast SSID issues with iPhones and iPads

We have a CIsco wireless infrastructure configured with a public broadcasted ssid and a private non-broadcast ssid that we are experiencing issues with the iPads and iPhones.  The iPad or iPhone will switch between both ssids if defined but keep the original IP address when it switches to the non-broadcast ssid making it unusable.  It shouldn't be switching at all technically.  If the non-broadcast ssid is defined only on the iPhone or iPad, the broadcast ssid pops up and starts asking for authentication information.  I have Cisco looking into this but I'm quite sure this is an Apple bug. Any other device works fine.  We are currently using version 4.3.5(8L2) on the iPads and iPhones.  I do know that if we broadcast both SSIDS, the issue goes away, but I don't want to do that.  Although it doesn't really add any more security, it just isn't advertised, so most people won't see it and avoids a lot of questions. Hopefully there's a simple solution.
    Any ideas apple guys?

  • Does Samsung Galaxy III phones recognized WiFi that does not broadcast SSID?

I recently purchased Samsung Galaxy III phone.  At home, I turned on WiFi SSID broadcast on the router to set up phone to connect to router.  I then turned off SSID broadcast on router, and phone no longer connects to WiFi.  I understand security is better when SSID is not broadcasting, but this phone will not connect now.  Apple products connects just fine.  Why will the phone not connect to a router that does not broadcast SSID event when the information is programmed into the phone?

  • EA2700 smart wifi keeps broadcasting SSID bug even if wireless disabled

    Ver.1.1.39.145204 is the firmware.
Shutting off the 2.4 Ghz and the 5 Ghz wifi does not shut off the transmission of an SSID.
If allow wireless admin access is checked the SSID continues to transmit on both 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz bands.
If unchecked then the SSID transmits only on the 5Ghz band.
In both cases the SSID being transmitted is the factory default SSID and it advertises an unsecured connection.  (router wipes out your security settings when you disable a radio)
On the plus side attempts to connect to this erroneously broadcast ssid have been unsuccessful but it still seems like a bad idea to be advertising an open connection 24 hours a day.
I have tried to report this to Linksys tech support.  Their answer was to reload the firmware.  Which I did - however it did not change the behavour of this SSID bug.  I asked them to report it as a bug and the lady declined.
Does anyone know how to shut of the SSID when the Wifi is disabled?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi eastavin. Did you delete some preferred networks on your computer when you disable both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network? You need to do this before connecting your computer wirelessly again, so that you would be able to know if your computer can still see and connect to your disabled network. Also, what is the OS of your computer? Is it a Windows computer or a Mac?

  • Non-broadcast ssid = no beaconing?

We were told that even though Cisco AP's can support a ton of different ssid's, it's a good idea to keep that number to minimal, due to the fact that each ssid becons to the lowest data rate.
Does anyone know what the recommended max. number of SSID is?
Also if we simply make the SSID non-broadcast, does the AP still send becon out for that non-broadcast ssid, and therefore make it somewhat better?

Lets be clear what a broadcast is and a beacon is ...
Aps need to beacon. If they do not beacon they dont work cause clients will not know where to find them. With that being said, if you enable 16 SSIDs you will have 16 beacons. These are virtual btw. Also they will all use medium.
If you want to know about the virtual beacons and cisco check out my blog post:
    http://www.my80211.com/home/tag/cisco-virtual-mac-address
    Broadcast / Hide your SSID
There is a field in the beacon that holds your WLAN SSID. You can either hide this or reveal it. If you hide it you lessen the chance of devices finding it. But as Surendra pointed out there is no real security. Becuase there are ways to get the hidden ssid.
So if you hide it or no, no impact to your medium at all.. Why, beacuse the APs still need to beacon ..
    Make sense now bud?

  • SBG6700AC stops broadcasting SSID

My new ARRIS SBG6700-ac stops broadcasting SSID for 2.4 ghz intermittently. Latest firmware from Comcast installed.  All power level check by Comcast and is OK.  5 ghz and hardware wire ports all work OK. Any advice?  Thanks Paul

The thing is though, the wireless radio is still working. I have no trouble connecting on my main network even when it's not broadcasting. I never lose my connection and all my devices still connect automatically. The only trouble that I can see is that my guests have trouble connecting because they can't find the guest network in the available connections. My network never goes down, nor does the guest network. The guests simply can't "see" it and therefore can't connect to it.

  • Aironet 1252 doesn't broadcast SSID and VLANs

    Best regards.
I have an autonomus AP Aironet 1252 (software version: 12.4(18a)JA1)
I configured 3 SSID and VLANs, but the AP doesn't broadcast SSID, the vlans are working fine because I tested configuring manually the hide SSID on laptops.
Also the AP broadcasts the SSID whe only one SSID is configured!!!
How I can do the AP to broadcast all SSIDs?
    Thanks in advance.

From the command line of your AP.
Change each SSID as follows.  You want to turn off "guest-mode" and enable "mbssid" at each SSID.  Guest-mode will only broadcast one SSID, you must use mbssid  to allow all SSIDs to broadcast.
    #config t
    #dot11 ssid
    #no guest-mode
    #mbssid
    Now from each radio
    #int d0
    #mbssid
    #int d1
    #mbssid

  • Certain machines cannot see broadcasted SSID

I created a guest wireless network on my 5508 controller (uses default a/n), and it is set to broadcast the SSID
Almost everyone can see this network SSID: my Mac sees it right away, and I can join it and surf the web all day.
Two Windows laptops had an issue seeing the SSID --it wouldn't show up when they scanned for wireless networks. One of these was corrected when the machine was updated to Windows 8.1
The other is a HP laptop running Windows 7. Even though we did some updates, the machine can't see the SSID. Even if I pace the machine within 10 feet of the AP, nothing. The user's Android phone sees the SSID no problem.
Since this client is never joining the network, I have little to go by (no logs).
Has anyone seen this? What could be the issue?

    HI colin,
    1. Did you enabled all radios ?
    2. Did the client(windws lapi) support 802.11a and 802.11b radio(2.4/ 5 Ghz).
    3. If above both points are ok then check the driver of the machine and try to update.
also paste the sh wlan out put here.
Check these and let us know the outcome.

  • Non-Broadcast SSID being displayed on devices

We have a couple SSID's that we don't broadcast.  Currently our desktop group is taking new Ipads out of the box, and they can see one of the non-broadcast networks.
I've asked a couple of local wireless engineers, and they said they've noticed this as well with certain devices, and have just ignored it, as it doesn't cause a huge problem.
Is this truly a known issue?

    Shane,
It's not a problem usually.  When you don't 'broadcast' the SSID all you are doing is suppressing it in the beacon messages.  A client, however, will still have the SSID in clear text when it is probing.
What is probably happening, is the device is hearing the probe/probe responses at the same time it is scanning and it's able to link the mac address of the AP to the SSID, thus showing it to you.
Some devices do this, some don't, and as your people said, not a huge problem really.

  • 3.12 Bug with WiFi and non broadcast SSID?

I seem to have a bug. I can reliably replicate this on my phone and after talking to others, they mention the same issues.
    Setup:
WiFi that does not broadcast its SSID and is protected (could be any protection, mine happens to use WPA Enterprise)
    How to replicate:
-> Add the new network, set the network name (ssid), username, password, JOIN.
-> You are joined to the network.
-> Do something that verifies you're on the WiFi network (e.g. visit http://hostip.info in the browser)
-> Set phone down, or sleep it.
-> Wait a few seconds... wake phone.
-> It should re-connect, but won't. It has forgotten the network connection was ever there.
Describing this to others, they say they had to turn on ssid broadcast... this is not an option for me since it's a work network, and it's their security configuration to not broadcast the ssid.
Any help or can we get this confirmed as a bug and get it tracked?
    Thanks...

  • Automomous AP not broadcasting SSID and can I get it to support both WPA and WPA2?

Ok, I am playing around with a 3702i that has been converted to Autonomous running ap3g2-k9w7-mx.153-3.JAB
I have 2 issues I have not been able to solve yet.   I have basically set it up using the web interface....
First, I can't get the SSID to broadcast -- the SSID is active, because I can type it in manually.
Second, I have an HP 8600 Pro All-in-One printer that I normally connect over WiFi.  Basically, it does not seem to support WPA2...I spent most of yesterday pouring through HP forums and WPA2 support seems to be a issue.  My old Linksys router had a setting that supported WPA/WPA2...does anyone know how or if I can support WPA / WPA2 simultaneously on this Autonomous AP?

    Hi
You have to add "guest mode" command to broadcast your SSID. Also if you need WPA/TKIP support then remove version 2 keyword under SSID & add TKIP option under radio interface encryption config. Also get rid of "infrastructure SSID" command under SSID config.
