No Built-In Audio, USB fine

The built-in audio input and output lost. The USB iMic output and input audio works. Can't find what's wrong with the built-in.
Milan

Since I don't have chime I don't know exactly when to push PRAM and how long to hold it.
I have no idea if a PRAM reset will help, but trying it shouldn't hurt anything. In my experience, most PowerBooks take from 60-90 seconds to start up. It's been awhile since I did a PRAM reset, but I think it takes a bit longer than that. Once the first chime sounds, the second one comes in rather short order. Thus, I think if you shut down, push the power button to start up, immediately hold down the Apple-Option-P-R keys, and wait three minutes, you should have a pretty good shot at achieving the reset.
You could also do an NVRAM reset while booted into Open Firmware per this KB doc:

  • Built-in audio keeps disappearing - iBook G4 1.42 - what gives?

Last month I took my iBook G4 1.42 on the road and kept on getting problems with my built-in audio. I attributed this to movement, but I wasn't 100% sure. I took care of it every time by powering down, removing the battery, holding power for 10 seconds, replacing the battery, and rebooting. I don't normally need audio, but there were a few games that would stall and then exit if there was no audio output device seen in the configuration.
It's been at home for a few weeks (my wife is the primary user) and it behaved pretty well until the built-in audio wasn't seen in the configuration again. I tried the old power-down trick without the battery again, but audio wouldn't come up. The whirling icon showed up when I tried to access most of the stuff on the top bar, but eventually settled down with no audio volume icon. I then tried holding down command-option-P-R while booting to reset the PRAM. Then it booted with the Mac chine and the built-in audio was fine.
Any idea what's going on. Yesterday was the first time built-in audio disappeared when I wasn't on the road, and the first time pulling the battery and pressing power didn't solve the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I came across the suggestion when I looked for how to reset the PRAM, but I didn't think I needed it at the time. I'll try it if the audio goes out again.

  • Voice over tool & built-in audio

When I open FCE, I routinely get a message "unable to locate built-in audio." I ignore it and continue, so far as I know without any bad consequences for my projects. Sound input and output seems fine, except when I try to use the voiceover tool.
My mic is hooked up through a Tascam US-122 usb connection. Indicator lights on the usb interface show that the mic is working, and the sound preferences panel also shows the sound from the mic coming into the computer at normal levels (the input levels indicator lights up when I speak into the mic)
My voiceover tool settings are Tascam US-122 for source and for input. My output is set for headphones. Adding to the mystery is that on rare occasions, after trying many changes in settings and closing/reopening the project, the voiceover tool will suddenly work properly (I haven't been able to isolate a cause). Today, however, nothing I do seems to help. I recently upgraded to osx 10.4.10, but the problem existed long before that. Any suggestions?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
There is an issue with some USB based sound devices and FCE HD.
You can use Soundflower pref panel to allows virtual "rewiring" of your audio from input source to output destination. That may resolve your problem.
Search this forum with "soundstick, USB, soundflower" keywords.

  • Built-In Audio Missing?

I am trying to operate Audacity 1.2.x on a MacBook Pro (Intel) with OS 10.5.4
I purchased an Audio-Technica LP2D (a USB turntable) which came bundled with Audacity 1.2.6. I set the preferences as indicated in the manual, and it worked fine--for a couple of weeks. Suddenly, it stopped recording.
I checked the "Audacity Preferences>Audio I/O" and noticed that there was no drop down for "Device>Built-in Audio." It had been there, which is why I was able to record from the turntable. Not now, however. Instead, it offered only "Built-in Output." The "Recording>Device" is supposed to have a drop down menu with "USB Audio CODEC" (and did). Not anymore. Now, it's only "Built-in Input" or "Built-in Mic."
I have tried both Audacity 1.2.6, which came with the AT, and 1.2.5, which is what appears on the webpage. Neither works at this point.
I note that in Mac's "Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi Setup," I do not have a drop down for for "Built-in Audio" for either "Default Output" or ""System Output." The Audacity manual indicates I should set both to "Built-in Audio." Instead, the Default and System Output drop downs offer only the options of "USB Audio CODEC" or "Built-in Output." Any thoughts on where "Built-in Audio" might have gone? My sound (including internal speakers) generally works (e.g., iTunes).
Is this an Audacity problem? A Mac problem? An Operator problem?
    Thanks

  • Video does not work when I connect my Macbook to a TV using a thunderbolt to HDMI converter. Audio works fine.

I've been trying to connect my macbook to an Insignia TV. The macbook recognizes the TV is connected and changes the display ratio accordingly, but it does so in a jittery way before landing on 1080i after some time.
The audio works fine on the TV from the mac, but it's not picking up any video. When I go to System Preferences>Displays, I get two windows: one for the built-in display, one for the TV. I think this is why I'm not getting any video, but I don't know how to make it just so that the display is for the TV. The displays are mirrored, but I'm still not getting anything. Please help!

Go into System Preferences, then Displays. There should be an option to click on the tv mirroring. Click it and see if it connects to the TV.

  • Built in audio failure

I have tried to find this topic in the boards without luck. My MBP (2 years old now, with OSX 10.4.11) has lost all internal audio - no speakers, no headphones, no internal microphone . I was unplugging my guitar cable from the input jack (actually the cable from the amp) using garage band, and that seemed to trigger the audio to die. System Utility reports "no built in audio" hardware, and System Preferences reports no audio input or output devices. However, I can still use airtunes. Also, no chime at start up - no sounds at all. What happened? Anything else I can try?

Any chance recommending an appropriate microphone?
You can use your current microphone via the iMic

Which is better USB or mic with amp?
USB is usually more convenient since a pre-amp needs power. The sound quality depends entirely on the microphone. There are some high-qualty USB microphones, such as:

There are also USB pre-amps for high-quality XLR microphones

There are also low cost USB microphones and headsets.

  • Rear audio with audio usb card, hercules muse

    Hello,
i have bought an audio usb card (hercules muse pocket lt), but i have a problem to use rear audio output. Using vlc player it works fine with all outputs (if it plays a dvd with sound 5.1), but with other softwares (itunes, dvd player..) it doesn't work .. so it works in 2.1 mode, only in stereo.
In Audio/Midi setup, i have configured the speakers, multiple channels, and 5.1 surround, and I test each speaker and they work fine! But in audio output list i can set only master volume, and the six channels aren't active.
Is there a solution to use the rear audio output?
Thank you, and sorry for my english, i hope you understand my problem!
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I did a quick search on Google and came up with quite a number of solutions.
    Best of luck.

  • Display Audio - USB setting visible, but not selectable.

I have my 24" hooked up via USB, the mic pick up works fine. But when I go to the Output and click on "Display Audio - USB" the selection *jumps back* to what I had before, in my case headphones. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I had to unplug the headphones from the headphone jack on the front of my tower for the Display Audio Output to work.
So my next question is, how do I keep my headphones jacked in without them usurping control of the audio output?

  • Built-In Audio Devices disappeared

    Greetings everyone,
I got a big audio problem.
The Built-In Audio Out and Inputs of my iMac (2011) disappeared in system preferences and i noticed the coreaudio process has high CPU usage all the time. Even force quitting isnt helping, as it restarts immediatly.
Furthermore my computer is hanging on shutdown:
If it's entering sleep mode, the display goes black but fans and HDD are still spinning, but I cannot do anything else and I have to do a hard reset. The same happens when i'm restarting or shutting down. It just won't shut off completely (I guess because of that hanging process)
I booted another OS X installation and everything worked fine, so there's clearly an error somewhere in my current OS X installation. But restoring from a Time Machine backup didnt help.
Are there any files/caches I have to move to trash or anything else to fix this problem without having to reinstall OS X once again?
    Thanks.

  • Audio is fine but video is completely white????

Does anyone know anything/experienced anything similar to this?
Occasionally I'll go to play a video podcast that I have subscribed to and it'll play the audio but the video is white. It does happen to play in the sidebar window if I choose to have it that way but when I click on it to bring it into it's own window, it turns completely white. Any ideas? I've restarted my computer/restarted iTunes and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Not really sure what's causing it or a true fix. Please help if possible.
See image to see what I am talking about.

    Thanks all...

Interesting. I'll give it a shot. Could this also be the cause of a similar problem I am having with iDVD? I built a really basic dvd with one video on it and added one music track on the main menu. Everything looks great but when I create a disc image / burn a disc, the main menu ends up displaying completely black. Like the previous problem, the audio plays fine and so does the video if I just hit play, but again, the main menu is completely black. I've tried different themes as well and it seems to do the same thing.
    Could this be related?

  • No built in audio after Leopard

I just upgraded my Intel Core Duo MBP to Leopard. Everything seems fine except the machine is silent. The Sound SysPref pane only shows Digital out, no built in audio.
System profiler shows the correct output device but there is nothing in the System Preferences controls
    Any ideas?

Ok, this has been discussed in the MBP forum, so this is what I know. Yesterday I received my MBP 17" I bought it used but it doesn't look used. I had the same problem, look and see if the red light is coming out of the audio jack. If there is a light there take a tooth pick, and lightly push it in and out until the light goes out. BE VERY CAREFUL

  • No built-in audio input on TiBook. What to use?

    Hello,
My PowerBook 667 has no built-in audio input. How should I get audio in (for digitizing vinyl records for example)?
It has USB, FireWire, PC Cardslot.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Creative Soundblaster MP3+ (USB) costs around $30
    and
works in OS X. And has RCA inputs, for a record
player. No drivers or software needed.
That sounds and looks excellent. But they don't make
it anymore. The replacement is $50 and is Windows
only (per their website). Actually, the requirements
for the MP3+ say Windows only also.
That iMic thing is fairly overpriced crap, as far
    as
    a sound card.
I thinks it's only $35, but I would like something
that is good quality in the <$80 range. I guess I'll
    look around. Thanks</div>
I know the website says Windows only, but it works in OS X (and Linux) with no drivers needed.

  • Built-In Audio Weak & Noisy

I just inherited a G5, single processor, that shows some shipping damage. The built-in audio at the front speaker is weak and loaded with hiss. The hiss is there even when the built-in audio is muted by the control panel.
Audio at the rear speaker output is okay. So is USB audio through an iMike. I don't have a way to check Firewire or Optical outputs.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions about how to get the built-in audio working properly again.

Resetting the PRAM didn't help - already tried, but tried again for good measure. However, testing the front headphone jack helped the noise issue - possibly caused by the jack's speaker switch. I wonder, though, because the noise was quite white most of the time - not the grungy sort of noise I'd expect from a noisy contact like that.
Unfortunately, the volume is still pretty low with the control panel's setting maxed. Okay for listening in very quiet circumstances, but otherwise not. For instance, the fairly normal drone of the optical drive is probably 6db louder than the speaker at full volume.

  • Built in Audio missing after downloading latest Security Update

    Hi everyone,
    My Built-in audio is missing!
Under System Profiler, it says "No built-in audio" under the Audio (built in). In System Preferences, (under Sound) no devices are available to select. When I click "Show volume in menu bar" the speaker icon appears, but as soon as I click on it, it disappears.
I've been trying different solutions I've found in the various audio posts, but nothing seems to work.
I tried CTRL OPT P R, but that didn't work. I looked in my Library -> Preferences and I don't have any sort of com.apple.audio file.
I've been putting off downloading the latest Quicktime update, because everything was working fine. I downloaded the Security Update, thought it would be "safe", restarted, and my audio disappeared. I figured what can be worse, so I updated Quicktime as well along with all the Final Cut Studio 2 updates.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Erik

Thanks for your troubleshooting tips- I tried to re-install and create an archive so I wouldn't have to wipe the main drive, but there was an error creating an archive and the computer wouldn't do it. I've had the computer since October 2003 and have never had to re-install, so I decided to backup important stuff and just do a clean install.
After installing everything, I have lots of extra space on my drive and the system runs nice and quick once again.
... and audio is back too.

  • Garageband  Preferences stuck on built in audio

Dopes anyone know why Garageband preferences get stuck on "built in audio".? It seems to be a common problem. I can record my guitar from the line in port on the back of my IMAC G5, however the preferences remain at 'built in' even though the guitar is recordable. I also think that my preferencces being stuck on 'built in' may be giving me problems using a MIDI interface into my USB port. Does GB preferences have a drop down menu to include UBb? I have never seen anything elese except "built in audio". I am a Newbie to this, so any help from the more experienced would be greatly appreciated.

Dopes anyone know why Garageband preferences get stuck on "built in audio".
    Dopes? Heh heh
Unless you have an Audio interface plugged in to your Mac, there's nothing else to select BUT Built-In Audio
I can record my guitar from the line in port on the back of my IMAC G5, however the preferences remain at 'built in' even though the guitar is recordable.
This is how it should be, as noted above.
    To use the Line-In:
    http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html#recordlinein
I also think that my preferences being stuck on 'built in' may be giving me problems using a MIDI interface into my USB port.
No, that's not it, MIDI is not Audio.
Does GB preferences have a drop down menu to include UBb?
No, GB should automatically detect a USB MIDI device when it is plugged in.
Once you plug it in and turn it on, you should get a message from GB telling you that it sees a MIDI device. You don't?
