No cc, make, gzip in Solaris 9 OE install !

I installed Solaris 9 OE Free version on my SparcStation 20 box, with several slow installations including "Developer version" and "Entire distribution+OEM", it did not install make, (cc or gcc)
tools which are must for any kind of usable system.
Going on to sunfreeware.com, I found all packages are in"gz" (gzip ?) format, which again can't be unzipped and can't be used wuth "pkgadd".
What are my options now?
-Thanks,
DP.

Hello,
Are you sure that your system does not have gzip and gunzip? I thinks that its located at /usr/bin.
Another thing is cc. Suns cc is not free so youll have to buy it if you want. Another choice is to use gcc like you say, but maybe you should download from another source, because www.sunfreeware.coms one doesnt come with the necesary libraries. Take a look at:
www.ibiblio.org/pub/packages/solaris/sparc
Solaris 8 package should work. If it does not, try to install the libraries to from www.sunfreeware.com.
Good luck. Bye,

  • Solaris 10/X86 install appears to have destroyed my display.

    Hello folks -
I'm new here, I searched and did not find anything that matched so I'm posting. If I'm asking about something previously covered, please be patient, I'll learn.
I am running an Asus A7N8 Deluxe motherboard with an Athlon 2800+, standard ATA/133 drives and an Nvidia 6800 AGP supplied by PNY. My display is a Viewsonic VA2012wb, which I've since learned is only available at a well-known warehouse membership store.
I've been using this setup under XP for some months now, and yesterday I decided to try and install Sol10/X86 again now that some new drivers are available that support my onboard LAN. Nothing untoward happened during the install (I'm very familiar with the process on Sparc hardware), and I was asked to reboot so I could start installing CD2.
Suddenly, no display on boot. Troubleshooting ensued, and I found that I was able to get the monitor to display if I connected the VGA cable instead of the DVI interface I've successfully used all this time.
    Subsequent troubleshooting included:
    1. Changing out the 6800 with a 6200 I had on hand.
    2. Booting to XP to see if the Nvidia Twinview stuff had become confused - The Nvidia software behaved as if there was nothing available on the DVI input, so many menus did not even appear.
    3. Checking with Viewsonic to make sure that I was clear on how the monitor selects inputs. It's largely automatic, but hitting the '2' key on the front panel forces a rescan of the analog and digital inputs.
    4. Substituting another display on this workstation, with all cables unchanged, so I could verify that the DVI output on my video card still worked. Tested fine.
    5. Moving the affected display to another workstation, to see if it was capable of functioning on the DVI input from a different machine. It was not, test failed.
    6. Unplugging everything and letting it sit for over an hour (while I fumed) - test failed.
    7. Returned the affected display to Costco today, for a spanky new one. It worked great on DVI with existing hardware (and under XP) this afternoon, so I decided to re-start my Solaris install.
Lather, rinse, repeat, or so I was about to find out....
After I was asked to reboot from CD1, my display died again.
Just like yesterday, it's currently working fine on the VGA input/dead to the world on DVI, and just like yesterday, everything was fine until the first reboot after the Solaris CD1. I repeated the most pertinent aspects of my prior diagnostic steps, and then I went out to the back porch to curse and throw tools until I felt better.
I cannot find a hardware reset button for the display, and an old friend of mine reports that he had a similar issue under Solaris 8/X86 in which he ended up blowing up a CRT. The Sol8 installer was overdriving the monitor.
That said, I don't think that the DVI interface is able to 'overdrive' a monitor, and that confuses me more deeply. I know that if I (re)abuse the return policy of this warehouse store once more tomorrow and get a new display it will fix the problem, but I'm hoping that I can fix this in house!
I refuse to believe that Solaris is actually frying the DVI input on my display, but I do have clear evidence that it the installer is a destructive force, at least with Nvidia cards and a VA2012wb. I'm seeing some similar threads on the Linux forums, some mentioning the part number of my display in specific, but no clear resolutions yet.
    Any thoughts?

OK, well... I did a restart, invoking the 'option' command, and the Lion Recovery partition did not show up, so I went ahead and booted back into SL, wherein I was given a 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' with a choice of ejecting, ignoring, or initializing.  I chose Ignore, and the drive now just shows up in disk utility as 'media' with no opportunity to interact with it.
I had the presence of mind to make a Lion DVD before I installed, so I booted with that, and it too was unable to interact with the drive.
Given the degraded state of this drive, I have no reason to suspect that entering target disk mode and mounting to my MBP would bear any fruit... looks like this sucker is beyond hope.  Yay...
I will not be re-installing Lion until at least .2 comes out at this point.. I can't afford a wasted day like this again.

  • Unbootable Solaris 10 x86 installed on ZFS root file system

    Hi all,
I have unbootable Solaris 10 x86 installed on ZFS root file system. on an IDE HDD
The bios keep showing the msg
DISK BOOT FAILURE , PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM BOOT DISK
    please note :
1- the HDD is connected properly and recognized by the system
2- GRUB don't show any messages
is there any guide to recover the system , or detail procedure to boot system again
    Thanks,,,

It's not clear if this is a recently installed system that is refusing to boot OR if the system was working fine and crashed.
If it's the former, I would suggest you check the BIOS settings to make sure it's booting from the right hard disk. In any case, the Solaris 10 installation should have writting the GRUB stage1 and stage2 blocks to the beginning of the disk.
If the system crashed and is refusing to boot, you can try to boot from a Solaris 10 installation DVD. Choose the single user shell option and see if it can find your system. You should be able to use format/devfsadm/etc to do the actual troubleshooting. If your disk is still responding, try a `zpool import` to see if there is any data that ZFS can recognize (it usually has many backup uberblocks and disk labels scattered around the disk).

  • Is it possible to make a copy of the Leopard install DVD?

Is it possible to make a copy of the Leopard install DVD? If so, is there a special way this has to be done? I just found out that we needed to use the Leopard install DVD to recover a complete backup from Time Machine after a recent hard drive failure. We have the family pack of Leopard, so I would like to keep the original at home and send a copy when my daughter goes off to college in case she needs to recover again. Her machine was originally a Tiger MacBook, so those install disks will not work. If it is not possible to copy the DVD, is there a way to create a bootable utility to do a time machine recovery?

This half-solved my problem. I have had no problems creating a backup copy for my intel based computers, but non-intel based computers are problematic; a G5 powermac tower and a G4 Powerbook. Both with super drives for single density burning. Both have Leopard running, installed from an install disc purchased from Apple. However, neither will mount the copy, but intel based computers will. have burnt/burned with both toast 9 and Disc Utility. Discs won't mount and are "spit out" by the drive.
    Power Mac G5 OS X: 10.5.4
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

  • Ds5.1 on Solaris 8 core install and SNMP

On a Solaris 8 core installation with the Directory Server 5.1,
everything works okay, except SNMP activation from the Administration Server which sends the following error

What Solaris 8 packages are required to handle SNMP properly

  • Fresh solaris 10 x86 install patch update problems 119060-17 ...

Just yesterday, i installed a fresh Solaris 10 x86 onto some pc hardware. After getting solaris installed and issues with my network card, i downloaded and installed the free version of the update manager 1.0.x. Next, i proceeded to update all the general patches for the solaris 10 system. I started with the command 'pprosvc -i' from a terminal. It then proceeded to download and validate a bunch of patches successfully until it hit the following 3 patches:
    119060-17 ---- X11 6.6.2_x86: Xsun patch
    122213-10 ---- GNOME 2.6.0_x86: GNOME Desktop Patch
    122912-02 ---- SunOS 5.10_x86: Apache 1.3 Patch
All 3 failed some kind of validation and then crashed the pprosvc program, at which point it exited with the following error:
    122912-02 cannot be validated
    119060-17 cannot be validated
    122912-02 cannot be validated
Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digital signature(s).
I also tried to use the GUI Update Manager to update, hoping the problem was isolated to pprosvc, but that problem was also in the GUI with a similar error message:
Error occurred...The detailed error message is: Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digitial signature(s)
Anyone know why Sun's update patch process is so troublesome?
    Getting Tired of Solaris Updates...
I should mention that this is the free solaris 10 x86 install and i don't have a service contract with Sun. If this problem persists, i don't think i'll get one, as i see only further problems after buying one.
    tired and confused

    Hi,
    There is an issue with this that is currently being investigated. There is another thread that may shed some light on what is happening here;
    http://forum.sun.com/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=316
Thread title is : Sun UC, Digitally Signed Patches Using New Verisign Certificates
In the short-term please ensure that the patch mentioned in it is installed.
To quote part of mentioned thread above:
"Once the Sun Update Connection client software is upgraded with patch 121118-06 (SPARC) or 121119-06 (x86/x64) or later revisions normal behavior will resume. "
    If this fails to resolve your problem, would you be kind enough to post the output of the following command for analysis please;
    # showrev -p | egrep -e '121454|121119|120336|121082|121564|122232|119789'

  • Solaris 10 x86 install problems allocating resources

I have a problem when I first install. I get two devices, NON ACPI and ACPI both using IRQ 3. After the conflict resolves, during some page instances of the boot configuration assistant, I lose my keyboard functionality.
This is currently set to IRQ 1. I was wondering if this was correct based on x86 platform specific resources. I am also unsure as to what port I need to use.
Has anyone ever tried anything different other than IRQ 1?
    AMD K6 400 w/ adaptec 2940 UW / 2 x 9.1 GB scsi Quantum 7200 rpm 56x ide cdrom and 192 mb memory SDRAM
Even if I switch my pci config around physically, that still won't help the keyboard probing or will it? Can I shut off probing and do it manually? Then again, I lose the keyboard sometimes during the boot config.
    Thanks,

I think u should do one thing.
    1) Find out your name of your NIC card. ( Probably if u installed XP and seen which NIC is that)
    2) Download drivers for your NIC by giving something like " download network drivers for solaris for ' your NIC' ".
    3) If fortunately if u get drivers, copy it on ur solaris machine and install it by reading readme file of the drivers.
    4) In readme file u will also find NIC name.
    5) Then run command " ifconfig (card name e.g. bcme0) plumb
    6) Now run "ifconfig -a" if u find ur card name there except le0 then congrats u have done it.
    7) Move ahead with network config.
Note : - I am not sure but i think if ur machine is old then u will not get drivers for it.
Tell me if u get success........

I have photoshop cs6 for mac but I would like to make one of my 2 seats installed on my PC, how would I get another serial number since this one is just for mac?

    Hi Matthew,
Perpetual products which use serial numbers are platform specific. You will not be able to use the same serial on a windows machine.
In order to use Photoshop on both Windows and Mac you will have to go for a creative cloud subscription.

  • Make, gzip, man, and other tools not properly installed

    Hey,
I have installed Solaris 8 on a SPARC box. It is running good and the IPlanet server and another applicaiton server are doing their jobs. However as I try and do things (add perl is how I found out) I keep finding that I am missing commands. So far the ones that don't work are man, gzip, and make. I have no idea why they wouldn't be on the system but i have run find several times and drew a blank for make. I found man and gzip, and if i run gzip from the directory which it is installed in it will run fine. I found man but it won't run at all. Has anyone else encountered this??
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi,
I am not sure if you tried this yet but type the following in a terminal window:
    #echo $PATH
This will tell you what is in your path. It sounds like your path is not set correctly seeing as you said in order to run gzip you have to cd to the directory that it is installed in. You may want to add these to your path in your .login file.

  • Anyone have luck with gnu make in a solaris 8 container?

global zone running solaris 10 05/08 (480 hw). got a solaris 8 zone up (flash arcive of one of our solaris 8 systems, NICE!!!). got most items working, except i have probs with gmake (gnu make), any version. ive tried older-current, built from src, and binary packages. all have the same prob.

havent tried dtrace yet from the global zone. am i missing some type of privilege outside of the default ones? i can compile and build most open src items with the system make, however we have our own products we build with gnu make.

agreed. though in this solaris 8 zone, i have built openssh, openssl, openldap, mit krb5, sudo, various other gnu utils, and a few more open src projs and all seem to work just fine. test programs ran ok, and i connect via sshd (5.0p1+hpn). we are an isv, and i have had some of our folks run our prods through a bit and so far all those have been ok as well. we are going to run oracle in this env shortly as well as stress test with our prods.
it would be interesting to see what some of the sun folks have to say. with your change to job.c, i was able to run all the make checks, and have used gmake to build a few projects as well. i probably will see what gmake can do building gcc with -j4.
very nice find by the way. hope this does raise a few flags with sun as to why this change would be needed.

  • Problems with make/gcc on Solaris

I'm working on building a binary on several different platforms, but the only one giving me trouble is Solaris 10 (64-bit -- though apparently this is building a 32-bit binary). The binary relies on the following project:
    https://projects.coin-or.org/Cbc
I can checkout their code from SVN and build it without a problem. However, we then have a small cpp file that links to those libraries. I cannot get this cpp file to build. In fact, Solaris chokes on the makefile itself complaining that one of the lines ends with the '$' (which it does). The strange thing is, this makefile works correctly on Linux. It also works just fine on Windows in the MinGW environment (I do have to add a few flags on Windows but they are completely unrelated and the line ending with '$' still still present and works).
Since the makefile failed, I tried to run the 2 commands that it does manually. The first one succeeds but the second command fails to locate the dynamic libraries -- even though the directory they reside in is specified in the -L argument. What gives??
I put /usr/ccs/bin and /usr/sfw/bin in my PATH variable so that I can use make and gcc. I had to add /usr/sfw/lib to the LIBDIR variable, otherwise I was getting even more errors. Here is the makefile and the error that I get when I try to run make:
    -bash-3.2$ cat makefile
    CPP = gcc
    COINPATH = /export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc
    CPATH += -I$(COINPATH)/include/coin
    LIBDIR = -L$(COINPATH)/lib:/usr/sfw/lib
COINLIBS = -lCbcSolver -lCbc -lCgl -lOsiClp -lClp -lOsi -lCoinUtils -lm
    CFLAGS += -DUSE_SNAPSHOT=1 -DNEW_SIMULATOR=1 -g $(CPATH)
    DATASTORE=$(PSASRC)/datastore.a
    .c.o:
    $(CC) $(CFLAGS) -c -o $@ $<
    .cpp.o:
    $(CPP) $(CFLAGS) -c -o $@ $<
    OBJSx = cbc.o
    cbc: $(OBJSx) $
    $(CPP) $(CFLAGS) -o cbc $+ $(LIBDIR) $(COINLIBS)
    -bash-3.2$ make
mksh: Fatal error in reader: '$' at end of line
    Current working directory /export/home/locuser/cbc_source/solver
Then this is what happened when I tried to run the 2 commands manually:
    -bash-3.2$ gcc -DUSE_SNAPSHOT=1 -DNEW_SIMULATOR=1 -g -I/export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc/include/coin -c -o cbc.o cbc.cpp
    -bash-3.2$ gcc -DUSE_SNAPSHOT=1 -DNEW_SIMULATOR=1 -g -I/export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc/include/coin -o cbc cbc.o -L/export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc/lib:/usr/sfw/lib -lCbcSolver -lCbc -lCgl -lOsiClp -lClp -lOsi -lCoinUtils -lm

ld: fatal: library -lCoinUtils: not found
ld: fatal: file processing errors. No output written to cbc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
However, if I cd into the directory /export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc/lib then the libraries do indeed exist there:
    -bash-3.2$ cd /export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc/lib
    -bash-3.2$ ls lib*.so.0
    libCbc.so.0 libClp.so.0 libOsiCbc.so.0
    libCbcSolver.so.0 libCoinUtils.so.0 libOsiClp.so.0
    libCgl.so.0 libOsi.so.0 libOsiCommonTests.so.0
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong here? It seems like there is something non-standard about make on Solaris?

Woo hoo! I was able to finally get past this. Thank you both for you assistance. I tried the LD_DEBUG=files option and it didn't seem to help me much. I got some additional output but it appeared unrelated. So then I separated out my -L argument into 2 separate arguments. This changed the error messages and led to some errors about operator new and delete not being found as well as some gz and BZ2 functions not being found:

    BZ2_bzWriteOpen /export/home/locuser/cbc_source/coin-cbc/lib/libCoinUtils.so
This led me to two conclusions:
    1. I needed to change the makefile to use g++ instead of gcc (due to the messages about the operators existing in libstd*c++*.so.6).
    2. I needed to include the libz and libbz2 libraries (by adding -lz and -lbz2) to COINLIBS.
I made those 2 changes to the makefile and it built successfully with gmake! So now I'm off to go document this information on our wiki. Thanks for the suggestions -- they pointed me in the right direction and ultimately helped me resolve this issue. :)

    Hi again,
    assumption proven ;-)
    full details from Oracle below
    HTH,
    Peter
Applies to: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 10.2.0.1
SymptomsWhile installing Oracle10gR2 on a Solaris 10 x86-64 server, Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) reports the following errors while checking the kernel parameters:
    shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295 found no entry . Failed <<
    shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100 found no entry . Failed <<
    shmsys:shminfo_semmni=100 found no entry . Failed <<
    shmsys:shminfo_semmsl=256 found no entry . Failed <<
The overall results of this check is Failed.
The kernel parameters do not meet the minimum requirements
CauseOUI is looking at /etc/system to check the kernel parameter settings, but this file is not used (by default) in Solaris 10
OUI should check the kernel parameter settings using the resource control utility ( /bin/prctl )
SolutionTo implement the solution, please execute one the following steps:
    1. Verify that the kernel parameter settings are correct using the resource control utility ( /bin/prctl ) and then start OUI like this:
    ./runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs
    OR
    2. Include the recommended kernel parameter settings in the /etc/system file and start OUI as normal:
    ./runInstaller
