No Chapters imported from FCE HD

I'm trying to create a DVD of my recent project. I created 12 chapter markers with the first being 00:00:15:01 into it. I exported it to Quicktime movie (not conversion) I selected add Audio and Video and include Chapter Markers. I made it not self contained. But no chapters appeared in iDVD? I tried including All Markers and also tried including Studio Pro markers without success.
Any suggestions?

  • Best quality HD importing from FCE

I'm using a Canon Vixia HFM41 with FCE. The video quality in FCE is amazing. My question is how do I retain that same stunning quality when importing video into iDVD?
    Thanks in advance!

You'll see lots of discussion in the forums about maintaining the best quality, and there are workflows which result in better quality... but iDVD creates standard definition DVDs and these are unlikely to match high quality original footage.
To have widely compatible DVDs, standards were created for the video and audio DVD formats.  The video format is mpeg-2 for all standard definition DVDs, no matter if I use iDVD or a Hollywood company uses custom software.  Even though all DVDs have video in the same format, there are lots of tricks to improve quality.  Better software (eg, DVD Studio Pro) use better compression algorithms, and Hollywood uses the services of companies who painstakingly squeeze high quality productions onto fixed-size DVDs.
Look around the forums for tips; look at Apple's tutorials; and get the basics right for standard definition.  High-definition?  Blue-ray discs could be in Apple's future, but for now, you'll need a Blue-ray burner and special software (eg. one of the Roxio Toast versions).

  • Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long

Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long will the DVD hold??? if i have an hour and 40 minutes of HD footage all cut together with FCE and has been saved as a movie file, how many hours will IDVD let me burn to it?
if i run over the allowed amount will it say i need to drop quality, i am editing loads at the moment and dont want to get to the end and it come up with an error message. also will idvd include the chapter markers if i export with them?

    Sure, no problem.
    1. Go to Project > Project Info in iDVD.
    2. Make sure "DVD Type" is set to a single-layer DVD.
    3. Under "Encoding," choose "Best Performance." Is the arrow solidly in the green portion of the quality bar? If so, go ahead and burn your disc.
    4. If not, choose "High Quality." Again, go ahead and burn your disc if the arrow is solidly in the green.
    3. If the arrow still isn't in the green, select Professional Quality. If the arrow's in the green, burn your disc. If not, you'll have to delete some of the menus (scene selection, etc.) or menu content and check again. You should be able to burn up to 2 hours if you don't have a lot of other menu content.

  • Imported quicktime files lose resolution when exported from FCE

I am having trouble with quicktime files losing resolution after I add titles and transitions to them in FCE.
I'm doing some video morphing so I use different software to create the quicktime files, and then I import them into FCE in order to add titles and transitions, and then I want to export again as quicktime files.
The problem is, when I export the completed movies from FCE, the quicktime file section of the movies ends up being a much lower resolution than when I had imported it. I am using all the same compression settings throughout: Sorenson 3, Best, Frame rate 15 fps. The movies are 1001x751 in size.
Any ideas on how to get the movies to come out as crisp and hi res as the original clips?
    Thanks.
    FCE 2.0.3   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    FCE 2.0.3   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Quicktime 7.0.4

Sorenson 3 is a web compression codec. You need to create your videos in DV NTSC at 720x480 at the 29.97fps. That the format that's specified in FCE.

  • Importing a movie into iDVD from FCE

I am perplexed. In the iDVD - Movies display, there are shown half a dozen movies. The other couple of dozen movie files which do appear in Finder - Movies are not listed in iDVD. Nor will the movies in Finder-Movies drag over to iDVD. I clicked on the yellow triangle which appears in the "insert movie" box in the theme, clicked 'import' and it told me iDVD does not support that action. So how do I get a movie from Finder-Movies into iDVD? I did not have this trouble with iMovie.
This is my first completed FCE movie. And things were going so well.

To import movies into iDVD you may use the File/Import/Video... command, after selecting the theme you want to use for the DVD menu.
If a movie in the Import dialog window cannot be imported, probably it has a non standard format, and for sure it was not exported from FCE. Any movie exported from FCE with Export/Quicktime Movie (the only correct method to get a movie from FCE to iDVD) may be imported into iDVD.
So I suggest you review the procedure you used to export from FCE and try again.

  • Importing multiple audio tracks from FCE HD

On page 22 of the FCE HD manual it says of importing Quicktime movies "...new audio tracks are added below the video track for EACH audio track in the movie". This does not seem to be the case when I import movies exported for Soundtrack. Is the manual wrong, or is it me?
Sorry if this is a FAQ, I've tried a lot of searches and I can't find anything.
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   832 MB Ram, ATI Radeon 7000, Mercury Elite 1 Ghz

Ok - I'm back again. I've been fooling around a bit with this and this is what I have come up with. ST only allows 1 track in at a time. Multitracks of audio from FCE are flattened down which makes it impossible to tweak them individually in ST. I turned the link button off in FCE and exported the audio tracks one at a time. Each track you bring into ST has to be opened in a new ST project file. Then you can tweak them and export them out of ST, and bring them back into FCE.
My opinion however is that ST is such a weak and watered down verion of STP that it is actually better and more time efficient to use the audio tools in FCE to fix your audio problems and do your mix. Sure, if you have STP its a great program - but ST has none of the power tools that its big rother STP has. You are much better using FCE.

  • Problems Importing from a DVD into FCE

    Hi all
I have successfully imported all my own footage from my dv camcorder in FCE 4 for a wedding and placed it into a sequence. However I have recently received more footage from another chap that was filming on the day, whom gave it to me on a DVD.
I know nothing about what camcorder he was using but initially I have two big problems: There is no audio and the image is squashed once imported into FCE (he shot widescreen and I shot 4:3), however my DVD player plays the audio.
The video files read like this "VTS01.VOB", however there seems to be other files supporting: "VTS01.BUP" and "VTS01.IFO" if thats any help on how to fix the problem? I really need the audio to work in FCE and some advice on changing the widescreen clips to my 4:3 project without looking squashed.
    Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Kev

Hi guys thanks for the links!
I think I would rather go for the hardware route simply because it sounds cheaper. I don't have an analog/ digital converter so an considering recording DVD output onto DV tape then importing it into FCE via my camcorder.
I'm kinda new to this video stuff so I have no idea how to do this. Can I just connect my Canon MVX20i to my DVD player somehow and record it to tape? I initially tried to connect it with the red, white and yellow connections in the back of the DVD player (to my camera) but nothing is happening. Neither on the record setting or playback setting on my camera.
    Any advice?
    Cheers for the help!

  • Importing from photoshop to FCE

Ok, I know this might be a photoshop question, but since I am trying to import into FCE MAYBE someone can help me here. I have been trying to crop out a picture of a hand in photoshop, but when I try to transfer just the hand to FCE I'm not sure what to do. (even after reading and re-reading) I have tried dragging it, and importing, but it keeps coming with a background. I have tried to save it in different ways such as PNG. I think one of my problems is, once I crop it in PS I don't know how to save it without a background. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am sure it is not as hard as I have been making it!! HELP!
    thanks!
    ruez

In Photoshop I generally use one of the tools mentioned by Tom to select the image, then I copy that selection (cmd-C) and create a new layer with the command Layer/New/Layer via Copy (cmd-J). This creates a new layer in the same file with the selected image. Then I make all layers not visible, except the new layer that I want to export.
Now using File/Save As I select the output format (for example PNG or TIFF) and save a copy of my image, ready to be imported to FCE. Only what is visible at this time will be actually saved in the PNG or TIFF.
Finally I save the full .psd file (with all visible or not visible layers) for future use; later I can make any or all its layers visible again, change the selection and create a new version of the image to import to FCE, using the same procedure above.

  • Export from FCE to iDVD, results in black border around movie

    Here is the problem....
I have edited a movie in FCE where all of the footage is 1440 x 1080
I export it using: File -> Export... QuickTime movie
I choose "self contained" movie and "audio/video", plus "chapter markers" in the pop up menu.
I then take this into iDVD amd all looks ok in the preview, but once burnt to DVD, there is a large black border around the entire movie.  It is almost like it is a smaller movie which does not fill the screen correctly.
Any idea why this happens and how to overcome this. When I lok at the exported movie from FCE- it is 720-x576 and not the full size- is this the problem?
    Thanks for any tips.

    Hi
    Is it widescreen ?
Did You in Your browser window set sequence and material to anamorphous. To me it was a revelation that the Browser window was exstendably to the right with lot's of columns - and one of them was Anamorphous.
Did you start a WideScreen project in iDVD - First window that opens after You clicked Start a New iDVD project (top button). At bottom this new window You set 4:3 (SD format) or 16:9 for WideScreen.
In iDVD You also need to go up to Project and down to Projectinfo
then set 16:9 here TOOO !
Proportion - Change it to 16:9
When I go from FinalCut to iDVD - I do
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used ( Important as cheap brands DO NOT WORK )
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set (IMPORTANT)
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Problems - then Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Chapter markers and exporting from FCE

Hi guys, hope you can help.
I am trying to export a film from FCE (latest version) into iDVD 08 retaining the chapter markers.
The problem is that it is not happening when I export using the QuickTime Conversion option, since there appears to be no 'chapter markers' option in any drop-down menu there. Of course, there IS that option in the 'Make QuickTime File' export BUT the film (which is in widescreen) then doesn't export as a widescreen file. That only happens if I use the Conversion option and set the size to 1024x576 or whatever. Since this option to set the size doesn't exist in the simpler 'make quicktime file' export option, I'm at a loss to know what to do.
Basically, I either export as a squashed image but keep the chapter markers OR export the film in the correct ratio but with no chapter markers.
    It's really frustrating. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    TP

If you have Quicktime Pro the 16:9 fix is easy.
From FCE export the .mov with Export/Quicktime Movie together with its chapters.
In the QT Pro Player open the exported .mov movie, open its property window (cmd-J), select the Video Track, then open the Visual Settings tab, uncheck Preserve Aspect Ratio and set the Scaled Size to 1024x576, and save.
Now when you import this .mov to iDVD it preserves its 16:9 aspect ratio.

  • Importing from iMovie 09

I have iMovie 09 and I just bought Final Cut Express. I created a simple movie in iMovie 09. I exported it as Final Cut XML. I imported the file in Final Cut Express. All as described in the Final Cut Express video tutorial.
However, I just get a "Media Offline" message... the import doesn't seem to work. I have tried this multiple times.
I have tried reconnecting the files, but it doesn't seem to let me select the right file...
Very confused... Is there anything I can do to get this working? (Preferably without having to attempt to reconnect the files)
    Thanks!

    Thanks Tom.
In the video tutorial it appears as if you do not need to reconnect the files. I assumed that this would only be necessary if the files had been moved, but I didn't move them. I thought that the XML files would include directions to where the video clips are stored. Do you have to manually point to the files every time that you import from iMovie?
My iMovie project is a screen recording. It consists of several .mov files. I have tried removing all the titles / fades / transitions but it still cannot see the video clips when I import them to FCE.
The movie's about 8 minutes long. It's in widescreen. I haven't changed any settings.

  • Importing from iMovie to FC Express

I have attepted to import AVCHD files from my Canon XA20 Camcorder to FC Express with no success. I then attepted to import the same files into iMovie with success.
    I have 2 questions.
    1. How can I import AVCHD files direct int FC Express.
    2. To import from iMovie to FC Express I cannot find where iMovie video file are on the system. In FCE you can nominate a drive for the files to be put.

    That is PAL 25 fps?
The data rate should be fine.
AVCHD is possible to ingest directly to FCE.
Make sure you set the comatching Easy Setup BEFORE trying to capture.
Use Log and transfer over USB cable.

  • I run Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V. How do I import from the camera directly to Final Cut, without having to go through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

    I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V.
How do I import from camera to Final Cut without going through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • IMovie HD won't import from Sony HDR-HC1

iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) on my G5 desktop controls, but won't import from, my new little Sony HDR-HC1 1080i DV camcorder. Same was the case with my 12" 1 GHz PowerBook until, at the advice of a Manhattan Beach Genius Bar tech, I did an archive reinstall of 10.4 and a reinstall of iMovie HD on both my G5 PowerMac and G4 PowerBook and then downloaded all the updates. Now my PowerBook works, but my PowerMac still won't import. On an empty second HD in my PowerMac I installed OS 10.4 and iMovie HD ONLY (to create as sterile as possible of an environment), made the 2nd HD my startup drive, and still iMovie HD on my PowerMac will not import from this camera (although it will from an older Sony VX-1000 regular def camcorder).
Does anybody have any solutions, or any idea why iMovie HD now imports on my PowerBook but after the same makeover still won't on my PowerMac?
Per earlier posts, I tried playing some piano notes in Garage Band, trashing the iMovie preference files, and reinstalling QuickTime (the tech had heard QT 7.0.3 could be at fault from becoming corrupted in certain updating combinations), all to no avail.
