No chat with IChat?
Greetings fellow IChat users or should I say non users. I too have the same insufficient bandwidth message 95 percent of the time. Since May I have probably only achieved 10 successful chats. Not only have I invested approximately $3000 into new computers to help with the problem, I also pay $140 monthly to Starband Satellite, for what is supposed to be 256 upload speed (usually only tests 80-175 upload), solely to IChat with my grandchildren in Hawaaii. Starband has been no help at all at solving my problem, nor is the company who set the system up for me. Unfortunately I live in a extremely rural area and Starband is currently the only high speed internet provider available to me at this time. I am truly stumped as to my next move. I have followed the IChat discussions concerning this issue and tried, to the best of my ability, all suggestions. The modem/router Starband supplies is listed as their 484. The only name I can find on it is Gilat made by Satellite National LTD. It is listed as model #434xx and has the numbers 215153 written above the model number. I have not been able to find anyway to access their modem/router to open ports, but I do have my firewall set to off. They do not offer their support software for Mac users and their website help is a joke. I am extremely unhappy with Apple over what seems to be a universal problem as well as their lack of properly trained support staff. I have already spent another four hours just today reading through Ralph Johns iChat pages. How many hours must one spend to be able to use IChat, maybe I should send Apple a bill. Sorry to be such a whiner, but yesterday was my grandsons FIRST birthday and today is my granddaughters THIRD. I wanted to be there with them but couldn't and had hoped I could at least visit them on the webcam. No such luck. Any suggestions out there.

That does sound absolutely frustrating.
With Satelite based internet connections there can be a slight delay as the modem negotiates how much data is coming.
Now iChat is a large bandwidth user on that connection you have and some things you could try that might make it more successful.
The mian one is to choose something like iTunes and connection it to the Music store and listen to a sample or even watch a video preview to get you connection running at full tilt just before starting an Video chat.
The next is similar and involves using the web browser to go to Flash based websites or ones with Video content you can tap into.
It might be that the ISP can supply a different modem that reacts faster to the demands you place on it.

You have to configure Port Forwarding on the Verizon FIOS Modem Router for iChat.

1. Click the arrow next to “IP Address forward to or select from menu” to display a menu and either enter the IP address of the item to port forward from, or choose an item from the drop-down menu (choose your machine by host name, since the internal ip address changes from time to time, after the lease time expires).
2. Click the arrow next to “Application to forward...” and select a pre-configured application from the drop-down menu (if iChat is not present in the list, you'll have to set up Advanced Port Forwarding).

I have just purchased a new macbook air and i am new to MAC. I am unable to do audio chat through ichat (google talk) with others who are using gtalk on windows enabled PC/ laptops..can some one pleas help me through? Thanks...

iChat uses the same protocols to do Video or Audio chats no matter if you use an "AIM" Buddy List or "Jabber" one.
However in the Case of a Jabber one, the Buddy also has to be using iChat.
This is because Jabber Apps (including the standalone App called Googletalk for PCs) use different Protocols to do Video and Audio Chats.
You could both use a Browser and Use Mebeam
(Type in a room "name" once you are in the room copy the URL of the page and send it to your Buddy to invite them)
This uses Flash which you have to have On in your Browser.
If you have a Google Mail ID and have Enabled Talk on your Account you could download the Google Web Browser Plug-in and Chat on the Google pages.

Cannot text chat with iChat since installing Leopard.
Since installing leopard, I have been unable to use iChat. I can boot up the application, and see my buddy list as normal. But when I double click on a buddy's icon to start a text chat, I get a completely blank chat box. (i.e. I don't see the buddy's name and icon at the top of my box.) if I type in the text box below and hit enter, I get a prompt that says "one or more buddies have to be invited to the chat." If I right click on a buddy's name, and click on "invite to chat", then ichat crashes and I get the message copied below.
I have tried reinstalling ichat from my OS 10 upgrade disk, then reinstalling the 10.5.4 combo update - no help. I tried blowing away my preferences for ichat in system preferences then re-entering my data - no help. Also, this problem happens on both my AOL and mac.com profiles, with both AOL and mac buddies.
The exception type, as you'll see below is EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV) and the exception code is KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x00000000636f6e94. Please help!

I can't video chat with iChat people in Messages...
I have Messages on OS X 10.8 but my friend has iChat still so i made an AIM account to chat with her. This worked. But now i can't video chat with her. We can both send invites to video chat but the other person cannot accept/see them. All that happens is the camera turns on...

All the Google IDs I know that work are in the form of [email protected] of [email protected]
Both these types are Google Mail IDs
I know of other names that look like [email protected] bit these are not Mail Accounts and do not work with the Google Talk servers (talk.google.com as seen in iChat Preferences > Accounts > Server settings for a gmail account name)
A random set of character sand numbers and that ending sound more like a Google Chat room rather than his ID.

Can't Video Chat with iChat and AIM for PC
I recently bought a MacBook Pro and I'm using iChat (obviously). I've tried many times to have a One-Way Video chat with my friend who is using Windows XP and the newest version of AIM for Windows. When we connect to the video chat I can see myself but on his end he only sees a black screen, he is unable to see me. Help??

You could try Limiting the Bandwidth (ichat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit) to 500kbps. (Possibly try 200kbps as well)
If the latest version of AIM on PC includes the "Real Time" Option, it should turned Off. (It is a feature to send Text as you type but effects the Video end as well).

There is no guarantee of success I am afraid, despite both apps supposedly being compatible.

Audio chat with iChat (Mac) and Trillian (PC) not working
I use iChat on my Mac (actually, we have tried two different ones with the same results) and the person I want to have an audio chat with is using Trillian Basic (just downloaded) for his PC. We tried using the AIM client on his PC and that didn't work... I looked through the forums and several suggested using Trillian.
We are both able to text chat with each other, but when I try to initiate an audio chat, it tells me almost immediately that the other user has declined my invitation. He never gets an alert. Basically the same thing happens the other way as well.
Any ideas? Is there a setting on the PC that needs to be set for this to work? I can iChat with Audio to other iChat users from my Mac(s), so I am thinking that the PC is the problem.

I use iChat to videochat with my sons, who use Trillian on the PC. It's not that easy to set up, opening ports, enabling Trillian through the XP firewall, etc.
You might fare better with Skype. Download from:

Since iChat 3 and AIM on a PC at AIM 5.9 this does seem to have gotten more and more difficult.
To Summarise.
Allow AIM App through Windows Firewall
If The routing device uses UPnP Enable that as well.
In the routing device make sure the AIM port are allowed (If not using UPnP then port 5190, 443 and 1024-5000 should be forwarded)
AS iChat is one of the AIM Clients that can not work with "Real Time" in AIM 6.5 and upwards this should be turned Off at the AIM end.
The six names in Table 1 should be added to Test with (preferably at both ends).
These names show IPs as if they are connected direct to the Internet (No Routing device meaning NO NAT) and can be more successful than your Buddies because of this.
At the Mac End.
The Firewall in Snow Leopard can be Off
If ON, it should have Allowed Signed Apps enabled in the Advanced Button and iChat added to the list.
In the routing device the use of UPnP is better as it allows you to Screen Share in iChat with other Mac Buddies using iChat.
Alternatives.

Tokbox allows you to link to your existing Buddy Lists. Mebeam is the least fussy layout.

10.4.3 breaks AV chatting with iChat
Since upgrading to 10.4.3 I am no longer able to establish an audio or a video chat with my family. We've been able to do this for a while now under 10.4.x. The audio or video window opens up and says it is connecting, but it never actually connects.

iChat 3.1 (10.4.3 update) does make some changes to the iChat data packets in an attempt to improve the success of them in certain situations.
I would do the following, testing iChat at each stage with a fresh start of the application:
1) Reboot the modem.
2) Add Ports to the modem's set up if not done already.
2a) same for any Router in the link
3) Double check that only one device is the DHCP server for the local net.
4) Check the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming Tab is set to match your download spees.
5) delete com.apple.ichat.plist as this holds the bandwidth info (it is in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences).
6) Backstep Quicktime or reinstall it.
7) Check for new drivers for Video or Audio Capture cards
M-Audio and the like
8) delete or Disable any third party Quicktime Plug-ins.
9) Run through this:
Shut down the computer
Disconnect from the modem
Restart the computer.
Restart iChat
Plug in the internet.
Log In To AIM.
10) Check any Port Forwarding settings and computers current IP addres if using Port Forwarding and DHCP together.

I am having a small problem, and I am not sure how to fix it.
My boyfriend is at college and just recently purchased a new laptop, including a webcam. He is using AIM 6.8 while I am using iChat 3.1.9, and we can connect to video chat, the only problem is that he can hear and see me, while I can only see him. Is it something to do with his AIM or is it a problem on my end? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really want to get this problem fixed! It took a bit to figure out, changing different settings and all, but we managed to do a live vid chat that way, you both may need to alter the preferences on for your cams and then once you get a live feed between the two of you set up a smart voice chat on your im window. You can't have an audio-only chat between iChat on the Mac and AIM on the PC, but there is a PC client which can be used for an audio-only chat with iChat, called Trillian.

Ok, i have tried to invite people and have been invited to join audio chats (no video) and it says that the other member did not accept. Can iChat just do audio chats, or do you have to do Audio/Video chats? Can anyone help me fix this problem and start audio chatting withfriends?

The answer might depend on who you're trying to audio-chat with.
iChat cannot do audio-only chats with PCs and AIM. It can do audio-chats with other macs and with PCs using Trillian.

Podcasting with iChat and Garageband.
I have a Powerbook G4, and my two of my friends have Windows computers. We want to record a podcast on my computer by recording our voices in an iChat Audio Chat. They are both using AIM Triton on their sides. I tried inviting one of my friends to an Audio Chat, and he accepted. I went to Garageband, and hit record. I received a message saying that garageband had detected an iChat Audio Chatm, so that took care of things with one of my friends. I disconnected from him, and tried connecting to my other friend, and before he even received some sort of notification, I was told that my friend denied my request. Later, I tried inviting them both at the same time. I received a message saying that my friends did not support multiperson Audio Chats. So now I have two problems: (A) connecting to one of my friends, which, to me, seems awkward because both had just installed AIM Triton and were using the same version; and (B) Supposing I eventually do get connected to my second friend, how will I engage in a multiperson chat if none of my friends' clients support it? I would appreciate it if someone could help resolve my issue, or name a Windows AIM client that allows for multiperson audio chatting with iChat.

Quicktime Pro is one of the apps that gets listed when people ask about this for iChat.
The Three being Conference Recorder, Quicktime Pro and SnapZProX
I know from personal experience that SnapZProX and Conference Recorder record outgoing and incoming voices. Both save them as .mov files. Presumably Quicktime Pro does as well.
The first two don't give you the option of separate tracks for incoming or ougoing voices. I don't suppose Quicktime does either, but I don't know for sure.
Not everyone has the newest version of GarageBand so it does not get mentioned that often.
It might pay to also ask in the GarageBand Forum (pick one form the list at the top) and also the Quicktime one.
This sounds like (pardon the pun) that is more about those apps than iChat or chat IMs themselves.

Problem with ichat 3.1.9 and os 10.4.11 and aim logon for a/v chats
Hello all. Please help. I have been trying to help a family member with their mac laptop, os tiger 10.4.11 and ichat 3.0. When trying to logon to start an a/v chat with anyone the program keeps defaulting to AIM. We have repeatedly deleted the "com.apple.ichat.aim.plist" file from the computer. This was done in the home/user/preferences/library folder and then in the documents folder. We have deleted all AIM accounts from the computer in iChat and all AIM associations in the keychain access. We have unchecked all boxes for the bonjour account in preferences in ichat and checked only "use this account" for the ".mac" account. We have tried changing the port to 443 from 5190 with no results. Short of reinstalling the ichat program from the installation cd, I am at a loss for what to do next. All replies helpful. Thanks.

You are on 10.4.11 ?
And the iChat version reads iChat 3.0 ?
This would suggest iChat has been Reinstalled and the 10.4.11 COMBO Updater for your Processor type has not bee installed (Again)
Software Update will think this update is done and not ask for it again. However the reinstall of apps will override this and need the COMBO Installer to be downloaded and run.
With the OS at this time there were separate Intel and PCC Downloads.

iChat 3 can login to AIM with AIM Names, Apple IDs (@mac.com and MobileMe @Me.com names) and to various Jabber servers also in an email type name style (as in [email protected]) and can be made to login to GoogleTalk.
Previously in iChat 1 & 2, iChat Only logged in to AIM.
In the Start Up Screens which you can return to be deleting the com.apple.ichat.plist and the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist at the same time it will offer AIM as the first choice (With @mac.com as the alternative option).
MobileME names have to be entered as if they are AIM names and entered in full as in [email protected].
iChat is therefore a Multi-service client. An AIM Login with an AIM name or an Apple ID is the first choice in entering a Screen Name in the Start Up Screen.
From there it will appear first in the list in iChat > Preferences > Accounts (And the Window Menu). In the server Settings tab it will list the AIM server as the login server (login.oscar.aol.com) whether you use an Apple ID or an AIM one.
Apple have an agreement that lets AIM (Or it's servers) query the MobileMe and @mac.com name databases to check a name is valid.
There is one drawback with this method. AIM only allow passwords up to an including 16 characters where as Apple allows longer.
They need to be shortened to 16 characters or less if they are longer at Apple.
There is NO Apple or Mac IM service.
Reinstalling iChat will not change this behaviour.
There is no option in the General Section of the Preference to Set iChat as the default app See Here in iChat 3
This has a direct effect on using Web Page Links to start Group Chat/Chatrooms.
This is changed in Firefox 3.x in the MIME settings or this Method in Internet Explorer.
Shiira and Safari cannot change this but changing in the others seems to help them as well.
Summary.
It looks like you need a COMBO Install to bring iChat up to date with the OS based on the info posted. Links provided.
iChat is first and foremost an AIM client and Apple IDs log in to the AIM Servers.
iChat cannot be set to be the default App in iChat 3 (It can in iChat 4 and 5).
However you can use a Web Browser to change this behaviour for Web Links to Chatrooms/Group chats.
I think I have covered almost everything I can think of raised by your post but I am still unsure which of these you were really asking about.
If I have missed the point could you re-post with some different info or describe what it is you are trying to do ?

There is a beta application called Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X that is an MSN Server client.
However, please note that the Mercury Messenger Webcam / Video Conference Support section, which I quote, in part, includes the following:
Video-conferencing is supported on Mac OS X, however it is receive-only, due to an incomplete JMF library for Mac OS X. The feature is still relatively new, and so some issues may occur in use.
Although Mercury Messenger (beta) will connect to the MSN Server, those comparing it with iChat AV's capability should certainly study the sections about the limitations and known issues.
If you get Mercury Messenger on Mac OS X working, please post back and let us know what you think of it.

VPC for Mac does not support Firewire video, so it cannot use an iSight for video. Sorry, but I have not seen anyone post a method of using VPC that rivals the performance of using the same application on a Windows PC.
Also, VPC with the current version of Windows is so expensive that, at least where I live, it is often cheaper to buy a used, and sometimes a new, PC to run your PC software.
If you really MUST use PC software, I suggest running it on a PC.
