No Christmas Songs in Summer Shuffle Play

Absolutly nobody wants to hear Wham's Last Christmas on a bright summer day. And it makes you even more depressed listening to Kate Yanai's Summer Feeling playing on a cold winter's day with snow falling outside. But exactly this happens when you press the shuffle button and put iTunes on the DJ's position with your whole libary as it's music pool. My IDEA is to give the user the POSSIBILITY to make SHUFFLE know in which time of the year SOME SONGS are not to play!
A simple option (checkbox + date selector) like: (X) Don't use this song for shuffle / from: 3rd of March / till: 1st of July
What do you think about it. Wouldn't this be a great feature of iTunes 6.0?

I also have all of my Xmas music as "holiday" genre. I too have a smart play list that finds all of these songs. What I do different though, is that I uncheck the Christmas songs when it is unseasonable.
I suppose you could do the same for songs that you consider to be more summery, or related to any other time of the year.
Un-checking them keeps them off of my iPod, saving the precious space for the other songs I want to hear!
One problem with building it into iTunes 6.0 --> how is a computer song supposed to know that a certain song should only be played at Christmas? Sure, if it includes Santa in the title, that would be a dead giveaway, unless there are songs out there that talk about Santa but aren’t really holiday songs:
Example: The Christmas Song by Dave Matthews - sure, it talks about Christmas, but isn't really a Christmas song that can't be played the rest of the year... smart play lists can only be so smart before they are downright scary!!
(still a cool idea though!) :-P

Select the songs, press CTRL+I to Get Info, on the Options tab set Skip when shuffling to Yes.
If you want to the hide the songs from your main music view you could consider changing the media kind to audiobooks or podcasts if you don't mind the side effect of them showing up there instead.

  • Shuffle plays same named songs consecutively

I have found this bug on iTunes 11, which was not present in previous versions of iTunes (10, 9, etc.).  The new way that songs are shuffled somehow goes by song title.  If one has a few songs with the same song title, these will be played consecutively.  This became painfully apparent while playing Christmas music.  In my collection I have several different versions of the same Christmas songs by different artists, (and in some cases the same artist as different albums may have the same song by the same artist.  I do enjoy all of these songs, but having them repeat is quite annoying.

Hi! Yes, I have also noticed this problem also, but it goes back a bit further than the new version of iTunes. Now that iTunes is much more visually based when it comes to the shuffle function you can see it layed out like your pic shows.
I Have looked into this in the past and again recently with my iPhone 5. From what I was able to find out, it seems that "shuffle" takes you list of music (by song title, A-Z) and shuffles all the songs like a deck of cards.
so if that is the case I can see why all my remixed versions of the same song play consecutively. Like a shuffled deck, not all cards(songs) get separated on one shuffle like iTunes does. Also, it could also be that iTunes detects 3 songs with the same title as one song. if that is the case then I completely understand why this happens.
I have 4 different versions of "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand (live, remix, club mix...) and everytime I shuffle my music... all 4 will play back to back to back to back...
I would think they would have to change the algorithm a bit to fix this, but until then I guess the next best thing would be to change the song title for each song to ge them spread out a bit more. (leading 1,2,3 or A,B,C in front of the title.
    Happy New Year,

  • Christmas songs don't play

OK, I have strange problem in that my Christmas songs are not working. I point out that they are Christmas songs because I have no idea of when the problem started. Last year my Christmas playlist worked fine. It is a smart list that includes all genre christmas songs. On thanksgiving I tried playing it and it didn't play but it being a busy day I didn't look into it then. A few days ago my wife complained that she couldn't get the playlist to play on her iPod and looking into it I realized there was a problem.
The problem, the playlist does not play anywhere, not on our 4 iPods, not on the Apple TV or on the iMac or laptop, all with different symptoms, the iPods don't do anything when you hit play, the Apple TV says there are no songs in the playlist and the Macs will play the songs in the playlist if you hit play and stop as soon as the song is over, if you use party shuffle and choose the playlist it says there are no song that it can play.
OK, those are what it does, here is what I've tried. I played all the songs and they play fine by themselves, some are songs ripped from CDs and some bought on iTunes. I recreated the smart playlist, no go. I created a regular playlist and moved the songs into it manually, nothing. I change the genre to something else and create another smart playlist, nothing. I created a johnny cash playlist because I have some christmas and non christmas music from him, party shuffle does not show the Christmas music. I changed the Nightmare Before Christmas from soundtrack to christmas and it plays just the NBC songs. I created several playlists, both smart and regular with different settings and they work except for any Christmas songs
All my other playlists work fine, all the songs play fine when selected and played. Since it seems to be just the Christmas songs, I am at a loss especially since so many were bought on iTunes. Even changing the genre didn't work. I also checked that they were all checked so they would play. On the ATV I can select a song and it plays it and continues on to the next song as long as I don't select shuffle songs. unfortunately it only plays them in order that way. When playing, the ATV does say that there are 113 songs in Christmas but selecting shuffle still gives the no songs in playlist error.
Since last year, I have gotten a new iMac and have upgraded the system and iTunes, I don't remember what they were at last year. My itunes folder however was and still is on an external drive. I have a new 24" intel 2.8ghz iMac with os 10.5.5 and iTunes 8.0.2. I searched around and didn't see anything like the problem I'm having. I've thought of ripping the CDs again but that seems like a lot of work and it won't help the songs I got from iTunes.
Can anyone think of a reason for this? I'm not really in the mood to drag my system to the apple store just for this. I would like to be able to listen to my Christmas songs.

Thank you very much, I figured it was something stupid like that. Of course when I selected every song on the playlist and looked at the skip when shuffling checkbox, it was set to no! Individually they were set to yes. Not sure how they all got changed, but as I said, haven't listen to the playlist in a year!

  • I have a new 160GB iPod Classic. I often listen to it for many hours at a time. Even with Itunes and the Classic set on shuffle it repeats songs often and only plays a small fraction of my songs. Help!            of my

When listening for hours to my new Clasic 160 with several thousand songs and both itunes and the Classic set to shuffle all songs it only plays a small fraction of my library and plays many songs several times over that period. It also seems to pick a small different group of songs to repeat without touching many of most of my songs each time I start listening. Over 98% of the music is legally owned in my CD collection. A few are down loads which play! There should be no issues with ownership. Please help. As much as I like all my tunes I want to actually hear them all. There are many many albums that have never been played.

Okay, well we've eliminated a couple of things.
One thing I have noticed about the iPod Classic: I suspect that "shuffle" is actually a Playlist, not a real shuffle. The Classic is not as powerful as iTunes or a desktop/computer, so it cannot truely "shuffle songs". I suspect what happens is that every Sync of the Classic with its iTunes Library causes a revised "shuffle playlist" to be put on the iPod and then, when you choose Shuffle play, it actually uses that special hidden "shuffle playlist".
So one trick is to Sync your iPod with iTunes frequently. This would change the "shuffle playlist". Another trick would be to create your own Playlists, either by adding what you want to a Regular Playlist or by creating a Smart Playlist which adds and removes songs by itself.
Smart Playlists: for example, you can create a Smart Playlist (in iTunes) which contains a random selection of all songs, or a random selection of a particular group of songs, provided the song has not been played for a period of time, say six months, or 300 days. Every Sync of the iPod with iTunes would remove any song from that Smart Playlist if it has been played. That same song cannot go back into the Playlist for a period of six months, or whatever you choose.
This way, you can reduce the likelyhood of hearing the same songs too often. This brings me to another point. If you have the same song, on different albums, then it's possible that you are hearing that same song but from both albums.
Try this: in your iTunes Library,
look for and click on the big + button and choose New Smart Playlist..., if you do not have the Sidebar displayed, switch to the Playlists view where you will find it in the bottom left corner,
Set it up to look like this:
It creates a list of songs that have not been played for fifteen weeks. It excludes videos and in my iTunes Library, it has 527 songs in it. If you would like a smaller list than that, click on the Limit to and fill in the number of songs you want.
Having set it up, play some songs from it (in shuffle mode if you wish) and watch how it changes . The song must play through to the end of the track before it is classed as "played". If you like it, let it go onto your iPod. You could set up a few Playlists, each with their own rules. Even if a song appears in two different Smart Playlists, if you have the "last played is not in the last" rule in both lists, then playing the song will eliminate it from both lists. None of this removes songs from the iPod (unless you use Sync selected Playlists...).

  • My phone as working fine until suddenly 90% of my music, most purchased, skipped over in shuffle. i then looked again and it had a little red circle next to the song and it wont play. It works fine on my iTunes on my laptop but not on my iPhone 4

  • How can I restore the count of songs during shuffle play

The old iPod app showed a countdown of songs during shuffle play: '1 of 30'.  This feature seems to have disappeared in ios5.  Is there any way to restore it?  It was an extremely useful feature and I really miss it.

Never mind, finally figured it out. All the advice says to click on the left-most column, but it's actually the second column from the left (the first one, in mky version of iTunes, is the album list.)

  • Only 6 songs (out of 200) played when shuffling a playlist!

I have a playlist consisting of over 200 'songs' (itunes/ipod think they're songs but they're actually language lessons). All songs are listed and if I play one, the playlist contains all items. However as soon as I press 'shuffle', the playlist goes from 200 songs to 6 (and it's always the same 6 tracks)!
Any idea what's happening here? I did upgrade to 3.0 and I'm guessing that has something to do with it as I've had lots and lots of problems with the music app since upgrading.

I always go with the obvious first: maybe most are marked as "Skip when shuffling." In iTunes, select one of the songs that is not played during Shuffle, and Control-click on Get info and click the Options tab. If "Skip when shuffling" is selected, this is your problem. You can escape from that, select all the songs in the playlist, Click on Get info and Options and unmark "Skip when shuffling." This will change all of them.
    You'll need to sync.

  • Playlist in shuffle plays only (the same) 5 songs, then stops

One of my playlists in iTunes in shuffle plays the same 5 songs (out of 83) and then stops. If I uncheck those 5, and start with another, it plays that song and stops. I've tried deleting the playlist and recreating it, both in Smart form and not, all with identical results. I've tried unchecking and re-checking songs, no help. Putting the playlist on "Repeat all" does not help (it just repeats the 5). Playing without shuffle works fine.
My other playlists seem to be fine. Thanks for any ideas!

    Select all the songs.
Right click - get info. Tick *Skip when shuffling* and set to No then Apply.

  • Can songs be made to play together in shuffle mode?

Some songs are intended to play together like "Golden Slumbers" and "Carry That Weight" or "Moving in Stereo" and "All Mixed Up" and it drives me bananas when you get the first but not the second!
Is there any way to make it so songs play back to back in shuffle like they do when you listen to the album in order?

    See the answer here.

  • How do I get my 7th gen nano to play music in specified order?  It either repeats songs endlessly or shuffles; neither do I want it to do.

How do I get my 7th gen nano to play music in specified order?  It either repeats songs endlessly or shuffles; neither do I want it to do.

If you are working out with this divide and running it will shake to shuffel and you can go under playlist and add new play list and make that way and you can put them in any order and you can turn off shake to shuffel and the settings under music

  • Not all songs in an album played when shuffling them

Ok, so I searched for info on this and can't find any questions that ask about the exact same issue...
If I select an artist (multiple albums) or an album and try to play all their songs (or all the album's songs) in shuffle mode, if I try to start off by playing any song other than the first one in the list (ordered by track number), then they all won't play. I've tried both selecting the starting song, then hitting shuffle, as well as hitting shuffle, then selecting the starting song.
When you turn on shuffle, what actually happens? Do the songs the "re-ordered" randomly every time you turn shuffle off then back on? If so, how do you get the song you have currently selected to be the first one in the list?
    Greg

I have experienced the same thing for months now and was in false belief that there was something wrong with my songs. iTunes should go through all songs and play them randomly. There is absolutely no excuse for this not to work properly. Repeat option is completely separated. It's purpose is to play songs indefinitely. It shouldn't be necessary to turn repeat on for iTunes to play all songs while shuffle is on.
I will just never be able to comprehend how is it possible for people who make this software for years not to see this problem while they test the application (if they do that at all) and fix it. This is just ridiculous and pure nonsense.

  • Why does my music player on my iPhone 4 always revert back to the same song when in shuffle mode even tho I have played multiple songs since that first song was played.very frustrated

SHuffle does not play songs in a truly random fashion.  Like all computer related random generators the sequence is pseudo-random

  • Apple TV stops playing certain songs that it would play previously

This is getting really frustrating! I have certain songs which I can play then eventually it will stop playing them. I can still see the album artwork song etc. But when the song is selected in shuffle or I manually select them it just sits there and won't play. I have reset twice and after each reset the songs will play again but eventually days later stop playing for some unknown reason! I just got this before Christmas and it was fine until either New Years or the latest version of the software came out. I am getting tired of resetting and starting over! I have 2 apple TV's and I am ready to take them both back because they both do the same thing!

Same happens here after I have upgraded to the latest Apple TV software version 4.1.1. Didn´t have that problem before.
The MP3´s play flawlessly on my iPhone 4 and on the mediathek/iTunes of my Macbook Pro 17.
Further my remote app on the iPhone 4 is now extremely unresponsible with apple tv.
Was much better before the "Upgrade".
I use OSX 10.6.6 all updates are applied everything else smooth and easy.
Seems this was a downgrade instead of an upgrade.

  • How to filter music, no christmas songs in March

I just signed up for iTunes Match this morning and it's great. However, when playing songs in shuffle mode I really don't want to hear my Christmas songs or classical songs as part of the shuffle. There needs to be a filter to either select genre's to play (select multiple) or genre's to omit (select multiple). Or is there a method of doing this (other than play lists)?

I think perhaps  smart playlist is the best way to go for you. Something simply like:
    Media Kind is Music;
    Genre is not Holiday
Or, whatever Genre your holiday music is in. Then just hit shuffle on that playlist on your iPhone.
