No Classic with Tiger

I bought a new copy of OS 10.4 Tiger from Apple, but it didn't come with the "Classic" application and I can't run my older OS 9.X programs. Do I have to buy OS 9.1 or 9.2.2 and load one of them before Classic will run? I've seen OS 9.2.2 for the eMac, iMac, G3, G4, etc. What is the specific version I need? Do I have to buy a different version of OS 10.4 with OS 9 Classic included?
G5 Quad 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Ahhh! I update my post. Classic comes with the install discs that come with your machine, but does not come with retail versions. The ability to use Classic on the retail version is there, but it doesn't give you the option to install it.
I am not sure what to do to get it installed.

  • Saving .eps to .pdf in Classic with Tiger???

    Hi,
I have a iMac and have just updated to Tiger OSX 10.4.2. I run Tiger as my general operating system however my version of Quark Xpress runs in the Classic Environment OS 9.
In the past I have saved a Quark Xpress file as an .eps and then gone into Acrobat Distiller and saved it as a .pdf. However since loading Tiger my distiller will not save my .eps file as a .pdf even though I still use both Quark and Distiller in Classic Environment??
Any assistance you could provide to rectify this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Joanne Matthews

Thanks, I just tried that but it doesn't retain the fonts? Yet the fonts are active. Any other ideas??

  • HP 7210 running correctly with Tiger and Classic ?

I would like to buy a new printer which would be running
    perfectly under Tiger and Classic.
Did you test this one with success?
    I'm asking this question because:
    - The HP web server isn't sufficiently clear about this
    point.
    - The technical persons I got on the phone at HP hotline
    were worse.
Could you advise me a color printer (with scanner and
copier) which is running without a problem on:
    - Panther,
    - Tiger,
    - Classic on Tiger?
    dan

Classic printing is a mixed bag. I do know Cannon's website actually lists certain printers as compatible with Classic. I haven't seen such specifications in any other manufacturer's website. I might add though, some printers can be made Classic compatible with these articles' info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300849
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh660.html
I suggest getting the printer from a place with a liberal return policy so if neither of these work, you can try another printer.
What program do you need that you don't have to be Mac OS X native? Perhaps I can recommend an alternative which is.

  • Install OS 9 on PowerBook G4 with Tiger

I have a 2003 17" PowerBook G4 with Tiger installed on it. I need to have Classic on it. The original PowerBook restore disk will not install OS 9 or anything else because, it says, the operating system on the computer is newer than the restore disk's. I want to just install OS 9 so that I can have Classic, but have not found a way to do this. The PB G4 is not OS 9-bootable. Any ideas?

On the PB G4 Restore Disk there is an installer for additional software and classic support. However, it doesn't work. When I run it, it goes for a minute, then opens a window requesting I insert the disk with a matching design on it. What it's requesting is the same CD that's already in there, but since it doesn't know it's there, I eject it and re-insert it. Still it does nothing. The only option is to Quit. There is nothing from the regular OS X installation to install Classic.
So, is my only option to use the Restore disk on a Firewire drive, install OS X and Classic on it, then copy it over to my regular boot drive?
    Thanks for your help.

  • OS 9 classic and Tiger

I really would like to upgrade to Tiger from OS 10.3.9. My problem is I've got some apps that still only run in Classic 9 and do not want to upgrade them for now. Can I run the classic environment along with Tiger? If I buy Tiger and upgrade will all the classic 9 I have currently stay intact?
    Any info is appreciated!
    iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Yes, you can upgrade to Tiger without affecting your OS 9 installation. Some things to do in advance:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Back up your current system by cloning it to an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • Can't use Photoshop 5.5 with Tiger 10.4.6 onPowerbook inspite of re-install

I can not use Photoshop 5.5 completely with Tiger 10.4.6 on PowerBook G4 15". Some features on the palette, such ac the cropping tool is simply not available. I have re-installed Photoshop 5.5, but no luck. Photoshop 5.5 works fine under 10.4.6 in Pismo with G4 upgrade. What gives?
Thanks in advance to anybody who could help...

It sounds like it is time to upgrade to Photoshop 7 or later. If it doesn't work properly in Classic, and you are finding your Pismo is becoming unworkable, either replacing it with another Pismo or Mac OS 9 booting machine is advisable, or upgrading to a Mac OS X native version of the software is advisable.

  • Can I upgrade macbook with Tiger (10.4.11) to Lion?

I have a macbook with Tiger (10.4.11). Is it possible to upgrade to Lion? Or do I have to purchase a new computer? I have a fair amount of free space on the computer and I also have a 500GB external hard drive. Right now it won't even recognize my iPhone 4S
Also, if I can upgrade to Lion, can I do it directly, or do I have to go through Leopard and Snow Leopard first?

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under 10.6. You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) from 10.4 to 10.6. Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion from the App Store.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $100
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. WhenSystem Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC or Classic. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. PowerPC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need an application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped support for the the Power PC applications.

  • Is There a Way to Retro-istall Classic onto Tiger?

On installing Tiger onto an empty hard drive, I did not install Jaguar first and then do an archive and install. So I do not have Classic installed next to Tiger. I had mistakenly assumed it came with Tiger, like it did with Jaguar.
But I want to have use of Classic.
    1) Is there a way to install Classic only without disrupting Tiger?
    2) Could I drag/copy files from a hard drive on which I did do an archive and install and still have Classic and have it work?
It took a long time to install Tiger with all the applications, including having to call Adobe for their phone-tree navigating, time consuming, re-authorizing of CS2 (I love Adobe products other than that). And I don't have time to reinstall everything again just to have Classic. But I want use of some of my older programs.
    Is there a way?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Good heavens, I would love to reward points every respondent
It would be nice to be able to do that.
Under the original format of the Discussion forums, you could do that. You could give points to those who were helpful (as many as you had points for - your points allowance accumulated daily), and you could take points from those who were just being rude or obnoxious.
When they instituted the new Forum format a little while back, they did away with that.
The new system allows only the original poster of the question to award points (previously anyone who found it helpful could award points).
Further, the new system only provides for 2 "helpful" points and 1 "Answered" point per discussion.
It is a bit confining. But, that's the method they've chosen.
Many people have complained. But, so far no response has been offered. Hopefully they will find a good compromise some day.
I do appreciate your points though And, I am glad to help when I can.
I'm sure everyone else here appreciates the sentiment in your thank you
We all appreciate it when the original poster says "Thank you".
As for making improvements to the discussions, there is a place to make suggestions:

    Hope this helps.
Likewise, I hope that all the suggestions here were helpful in assisting you to find a way to get your system configured the way you want it.

  • What version of iTunes should I use for my 160gb iPod classic with a 2.0.1 software?

I have a 160gb iPod classic with a 2.0.1 software. I just had my laptop fixed and I downloaded the new iTunes but I can't sync my iPod. I think this is because it's not compatible with each other (am i right?) Well, anyway, I need to know what verstion of iTunes to use so that I can sync again on my iPod. Thank you!

    hi PT the devil advocate,
    The first reason why I'm suggesting this is because of the first question ask in this post;
    sphericalcamel wrote:
I updated iTunes to whatever is current through software update, but when I tried to run it I was informed that it needed 10.4.9 to run (and for some reason software update didn't pick up that requirement).
The second reason, is because you will not receive full support on older software version. Like said above, you cannot buy song with an older iTunes version.
Beside, I said in a previous reply of this post that this is my personal preference to keep software up-to-date and that _I do understand_ that other person could prefer to stick with software version that have been proven to work well and not update. Having say this, I do not beleive that you need to play the devil's advocate here.
Nevertheless, this is normally suggested to keep software up-to-date in order to prevent either security issue (lot of updates are for improving security) and also for bugs issue. I'm not suggesting to buy Leopard here. I'm only saying that 10.4.2 is out-dated by 9 version which are free upgrade and that at version 11, 10.4 should be quite mature now for all computer.
For me, based on this, I do not see any reason why someone should not be running previous version than 10.4.11. If there is sleeping bugs running 10.4.3 and not 10.4.2, I'm suggesting to adress this issue instead because _there must be a solution to this_.
In order to solve the issue, I'm just suggesting to post it on Tiger forum.

  • Reinstalling Classic under Tiger

    Hello,
My Power Mac G5 (July 2003 brand) came with Jaguar installed on it and with a "grey" DVD, labeled "Software Install and Restore (includes Apple Hardware Tests)" (I'm translating from French, so the actual English title might be different).
Then, I upgraded to Panther and later to Tiger, (doing archive and install installations).
Now, in order to tidy things up a little, I've done a clean install of Tiger on a separate disk, and I'd like to do a clean install of Classic as well.
THIS topic at Apple support says that I should insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with my computer, double-click "Install Additional Software, and follow the onscreen instructions.
That’s what I've done with the "gray" DVD I mentioned above: a utility called "Software restoration" (again, as translated from French) has been installed and has been automatically launched, asking me to insert again that grey DVD -it even displayed a picture of the DVD label. However, it looks like the DVD was not recognized as the right one, so nothing happened and the only button displayed was "Quit". I've repeated the same steps several times with no success.
I’m sure doing something wrong, but what ?
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks to both of you.
    BDAqua was perfectly right:
I ran again Software Restore, but this time under Panther instead of Tiger, and O Miracolo the DVD was accepted and all the restoring options displayed neatly aligned, as well as the Continue button.
Actually, Software Restore looks like it is not compatible with Tiger. Note also that the grey DVD in question was shipped with Jaguar (and has Jaguar on it), not Panther.
Anyway, I'm going to upgrade to Leopard, but I'll keep Tiger at hand for Classic. Since I'm also going to abandon Panther -RIP , I won't be able to run Software Restore anymore. So, I'll follow BDAqua advice by saving a fresh, clean copy of Classic that I could copy back to my Tiger partition in case I need to reinstall it.

  • Adding Classic to Tiger

I've searched this topic but didn't see any postings that quite fit my situation, so I'm asking. I apologize if this has been answered already!
I just purchased a slot-loading iMac (600MHz, 120GB) to replace an old one that died. It came to me with Tiger 10.4.6 installed on it. I'm told that Tiger no longer has Classic built in to it....
How do I go about installing Classic onto my machine? I don't have the discs for Tiger. What I DO have is install discs for 10.1.2 (w/ 9.2.2), 10.2 and 10.3.
I'd be grateful if someone could walk me through the process....
    Thanks
    Michael

    Hi mapiper;
I don't know why you were told that Tiger no longer has Classic builtin because I have Classic running on my Quad.
I would suggest you ask at the at this Link. The users at this forum will be able to tell you exactly what you need to do to get Classic on iMac.

  • IChat not working with Tiger user

I recently received a new Macbook with Leopard already installed on it. I have 2 friends who also own Macbooks, who I iChat with.
One of my friends received her Macbook when Leopard just came out, so she had Tiger on it previously . The other friend has had her Macbook longer, and does not have Leopard, just Tiger.
When attempting to start an iChat with the friend with Tiger, it would not work. The weird thing about it though is that it has worked a few times before, if we kept trying and I found if I restarted my computer.
However, now the friend that previously had Tiger had problems with her Macbook and received a brand new one with Leopard already on it. Now it does not work for her to start an iChat with the Tiger user, although she had no problems with her old computer.
    Sorry it's confusing!
But in conclusion, it seems that iChat is not working between a Leopard and Tiger user. The confusing part is that we have gotten it to work before...so I'm really not sure what the problem is.
What can we try to get this to work all the time, without her having to upgrade to Leopard?
I usually get an error response saying there was no data received for the last 10 seconds, and she gets different things about Bandwidth, and saying she cancelled the invitation when she didn't.
    Thanks

Personally, I think it's Leopard that is at fault here. I had Tiger and my family and I would video iChat all the time. But then we downloaded Leopard. We discovered we could no longer video iChat.
My son used 4 different computers (all Macs of course), trying same network and different networks. What he discovered is that the ONLY way video iChat now works is if computers are on the same network. Well, how absurd, because the idea is to be able to video iChat with anyone, not just family members in the same household on the same network.
Apparently, somewhere, Apple (Leopard) bragged about their new improved iChat video on a network. Well, I think they forgot that not all of us are sitting in an office wanting to spend the time to iChat video with co-workers, but have friends and family in other areas we'd like to video iChat with.
So through a process of elimination, it all led back to Leopard as being the culprit, because Tiger to Tiger worked perfectly, and even Leopard to Tiger works IF you are on the same network.
I really do hope Apple supplies a FIX for this problem. I, for one, am VERY disappointed in the fact that I now have Leopard and can no longer video iChat with friends across the country.

  • How to Connect Nokia 2330 Classic with laptop or p...

    Hi All
I just bought my new nokia 2330 last week, when i try to connect my 2330 classic with my laptop the phone is not detacting.Pls help me in this regard. We connet 2330 with laptop or pc with cable or not???
    - Shree

    Hi all.
First and all, be aware that there are dozens of Nokia phones, and all have different specifications. If someone buys a phone to take pictures, then the 2330C is a bad choice. The port that the device has, is not a USB port. It is a Nokia proprietary port for service only.
@shreeg and others with similar issues (altough this is late): check for Bluetooth compatibility first at http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/pc-suites/compatibility-and-download
@mojojo and others with similar issues (altough this is late): troubleshoot your laptop and mobile phone Bluetooth. Check if your BT drivers are compatible with Nokia suites. Test them with other BT devices (i.e. BT headset, other phone). Also test the pairing at a different location. BT is a radio wave based connection which can suffer from external interference caused by other radio waves emitting devices, or by electromagnetic or electrostatic fields nearby (these are caused by almost anything that runs on electric power)
@everyone: my advise is for you to check the following web page for info on device specs http://www.forum.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/matrix_all_1.html to know which type of local connections are available on the devices. It's on the "Local connectivity" section.
