  • Clicking sound in MacBook Pro?

Ive 2.0dual core MacBook Pro since March and just last week there started to be a loud clicking sound of something spinning in the top right corner, close to the speaker. I am assuming it is a fan because it is constantly clicking at a fast frequency. Has there been any talk of this problem before? ANd if so is there a fix or do i have to bring it to a Store?

I have had a new C2D macbook for a couple of months and over the last few days have noticed the "kurik" clicking sound. As always you can be assured that a quick search of discussions will turn up threads relating to your concern. I know that this is an old thread but thought it appropriate to post here.
Initially, I was concerned as this clicking was reminiscent of the sound made by dying HD's in several iPods I have owned. However, it is not persistent and if I watch activity monitor each click is usually associated with a short burst of writing activity. If I sit and let the macbook idle, the clicking becomes less frequent. Disk utility showed that the SMART status was 'verifed' and not 'failing.' I would go along with the notion that this is disk management going on in the background - perhaps spotlight or some other kernel task.
As to why I have just noticed it after several weeks, it may be that I have been in quieter environments and the clicking have always been there. As I am writing, the clicking has disappeared. Nonetheless, I will ensure that my home folder and my added applications are backed-up frequently, just in case.
Has anyone actually reported a HDD failure in new macbooks?
    (Clicking has now returned)

I have been hearing a clicking/vibrating sound coming from my MacBook Pro for about a week.  Does anyone know what it could be and should I be worried?

Common symptoms of a dying hard drive
Hard drive is making a clicking, whirring, grinding, ping pong ball noise or any other type of unusual noises.
    Hard drive is not spinning.
Computer is not recognizing the hard drive.
    Sluggish loading of applications.

  • Clicking sound in MacBook Pro Retina

I'm trying to work out why my new MacBook Pro 15 inch retina laptop is making a clicking sound.  It sounds like it's comming from the top right hand side of the keyboard.  Other forum threads have suggested that this sound is related to a Sudden Motion Sensor but my laptop has a SSD so according to apple does not have a SMS.
I am starting to think that it is a noise related to switching between onboard and discrete graphics?  It occurs seemingly at random but the most common time is when waking from sleep.  I have also noticed that when it fails to wake from sleep - not a good thing to have happen on a brand new computer - it does not make the sound.
There isn't an apple store within 800km of me so it's a little difficult to get help from a genius with this.

  • How do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

how do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

  • Lion: secondary click fail on macbook pro

I just installed Lion on my MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB ram.  I have lost the right click function on my track pad.  In System Prefs/TrackPad, I have clicked the radio button for Secondary Click, but it won't stay on. Any ideas?

  • No sound on MacBook Pro after 10.6.8 upgrade

    Good morning.
I've got an 5,1 model MacBook Pro (aluminium unibody) 4gb RAM, 2.4GHz Core2Duo and it's been working fine up until yesterday when I installed the 10.6.8 Snow Leopard update.
Since then I get no sound through earphones or through the internal speakers.
If I ALT+Click the speaker icon I get two outputs:
    Soundflower (2ch)
    Soundflower (16ch)
I've no idea what Soundflower is, and a spotlight search just shows up sound.log which refers to
    6/23 18:54:29.163  => WoW Version 4.1.0 (14007) Apr 29 2011
So that looks like World of Warcraft (just started WoW and logged in, turned sound off, turned sound on and no sound from WoW either)
Looking at the log in the console and narrowing it down to Soundflower I see:
    6/25 10:50:02.974   --- [1] Soundflower (2ch)
    6/25 10:50:02.976   --- [2] Soundflower (16ch)
    6/25 10:50:02.980  ** Using Driver [0] System Default (Soundflower (2ch))
Anyway, I can get no sound in anything since 10.6.8!
    Any ideas?

    Okay, I tried EVERYTHING.
    Trust Me.
I even did the downgrading to the 10.6.7 HDA.
    HERE IS THE SOLUTION:
YOU WILL NOT NEED TO LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE, IF YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
    1. Download and install the 10.6.8 Supplemental Update from Apple (link below).
                                http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
    2. Once the update is installed, and the system has restarted, type "Disk Utility" into Spotlight, press enter to launch it, and select your hard drive on the left. Then click "Repair Disk Permissions." (This step may or may not be necessary, but is a good idea in case there are discrepancies from the update).
    3. Once the utility is finished, plug in some headphones. Then, press the Option key and click on the speaker icon in the menu bar.
    4. Click the Headphones option under the "Output Device" section. You should get sound.
Unplug the headphones and ensure that the audio is not muted. You should now also get sound through your speakers.
THIS WILL WORK. DO NOT MESS WITH VOODOO, etc. I hear that will just cause kernel panics.
If you still have problems, try resetting the PRAM by simply shutting down the computer. Hold Command+Option+P+R before the gray screen appears. Hold it until you hear the tone a second time, then release.

  • No sound from MacBook Pro under Lion OS X after the automatic logout.

When I go idle, my MacBook Pro does the typical log out....& prompts me for my password to get back in. I have sound previous to this, but, when I log back in, all the sound is gone. This frequently started happening with Internet videos (youtube) / flash getting no sound, but now it's the entire system. In order to get sound, I have to shut down my entire notebook and start back up.
When I click the sound effects in the System Preferences > Sound .... They do work.
Any solution to this sound issue?
If you need more information please ask.

Hi. Same here. I haven't try the PRAM reset, but rebooting the system works, with the obvius corresponding time consumption .
The system has two user accounts that are running simultaneously, my wife’s with Chrome, VLC, and other image and video tools (no professional ones). On my profile I have chrome, vlc, jdownloader, mail, mkvtools and stuff like that.
I first thought that one app was blocking the access to the sound card to the other apps, but if I turn off all of them and log out one user, the problem persists. So I end up rebooting the system…
    Any help will be appreciated

  • Clicking Noise in Macbook Pro...

    Hello there!
I bought a 17'  Macbook Pro over summer 2011, it was fine until the night of the Solar Flare and now, left of the mousepad/trackpad, there is a constant clicking noise. It never stops. Should I be concerned? I do not want to send it to be repaired. Is there something I can do by taking the back off of it? Sending it across the country is not very appealing to me...

Yes you should be concerned.  Left of the trackpad is your HDD.  Backup your data immediately.  A HDD should be very quiet with no clicking sounds.
Open Disk Utility>First Aid.  Follow the instructions.  If you cannot correct the problem with Disk Utility, get a replacement HDD and install it.  The instructions are in your user manual. (Easier than sending away across the country and also consider one with larger capacity)
If you find you need instructions on transferring the software and data, you can create a new post when the time comes.
    Ciao.

  • Is it better to press click the new Macbook Pro trackpads near the bottom?

It feels easier to push down to click at the bottom of the trackpad, and seems to get harder the further you go towards the top. Is this normal?

    ah818 wrote:
i just bought my macbook pro and im wondering.. when you push on the left side part of the bottom shell, is it suppose to make a cracking sound a little?
I would say no to your question.  The bottoms are secured by mulitple screws and there are also a couple of areas on the bottom tray that "snap" into the upper unibody.  Maybe try removing the bottom tray and reinstalling.  It could just be that one of the areas that is susposed to snap into place did not do so during the original install.
There is some "flex" to the lower tray in the more central areas and if you press on it there is a little bit of movement in some areas where there is nothing directly over the tray but mine does not make any kind of "cracking" noises and is very solidly in place with no give or flex near the edges.

  • Can't hear "new email" sound on MacBook Pro

    This just started recently...
The first time I open up Mail, it usually makes a sound for new mail. When I leave it open and more new emails come in over the day, I never hear the sound.
Again, this problem only started maybe a week ago.
I have a MacBook Pro connected to a Thunderbolt display. My sound output is set to go through my display audio. Sound works fine using Spotify, etc...goes through display audio.
    Thoughts?

  • Unibody clicking underneath, faulty MacBook Pro?

    Hi,
I have a 2 month old 15" unibody MacBook Pro, and when I press on the underside of the unibody case (in one area) it gives-in a bit... and makes a clicking noise (kinda like a high-pitched tick). Doesn't sound right, and doesn't happen in any other place.
Does it happen for you too? How can this be fixed? It seems something is loose. I still have warranty.
It seems to be limited to the area marked by the red circle in the image below - and doesn't click under trackpad, or keyboard. Here's where it is from the bottom:
And to give you perspective, a view from the top:

You can't possibly be serious I mean I know you are since you've just mentioned ..but wow ..

  • How do I disable the startup sound on macbook pro 7,1?

I need to disable the startup sound on the macbook pro 7,1 running 10.6.8.  If anyone can give me info I would appreciate it.

Look for Startup Sound on Macupdate.com
You really shouldn't turn it off, as if there is a error you won't be able to hear the beep codes.
However you can lower the volume.
