No Clips in the Timeline When Project is Opened

I added some clips to the Timeline, edited them together, saved, and closed the project. When I opened it again my clips were still in the Browser, but none of the clips were in the Timeline, even though I saved it before closing. Anyone know why this would happen?
Thanks.

No. Have you tried opening an Auto Save Vault file to see if they have worked.

  • Is there a way to copy & paste a clip from the timeline in one project in to another project?

    Hello Popular Premiere Pontificaters,
I am using Premiere 6 on a Windows 7 machine.
Is there a way to copy and paste a clip from the timeline in one project in to another project?... I can copy my clip, but when I open the other project, it will not allow me to paste it in there... but I am able to copy and paste a clip within a single project.  I tried everything... pasting in to a new video track and pasting in to an existing video track in the second project, but the paste option simply isn't there when I open the second project.
And if Premiere itself will not allow me to do this in any way, will a copy-paste clipboard type of accessory app allow me to do this?... if so, which is the best, trustworthy copy-paste app that is malware free?
    Thanks,

    Hi Bill Hunt,
I just read the page that you provided about "Handles"... thanks allot for that ARTICLE.  In your article and the subsequent article HANDLES, "Transitions Overview: applying transitions" linked from your article, it indicates (in PrE and PrPro anyway - I'm in Premiere 6) that transitions can be applied to non-Video 1 tracks... the paragraph below is a quote from that "Transitions Overview: applying transitions" article...
"Whatever is below the transition in a Timeline panel appears in the transparent portion of the transition (the portion of the effect that would display frames from the adjacent clip in a two-sided transition). If the clip is on Video 1 or has no clips beneath it, the transparent portions display black. If the clip is on a track above another clip, the lower clip is shown through the transition, making it look like a double-sided transition."
So this indicates that transitions can be applied to non-Video 1 tracks since it is referring to content in tracks beneath a transparent fade that would show through... and only non-Video 1 tracks can be transparent and have other clips "beneath" them in the timeline, right?
In the screenshot sample in your article at this LINK, I see the handles (referred to as B and E) and I can see in my monitor window how those handles would be represented by the two little bracket symbols {  }  ... you can see how they appear in my monitor window in Premiere 6 in this screenshot, and below, from a different thread that isn't related to this topic.
But I'm still trying to figure out how the handles can be applied in the non-Video 1 tracks in the timeline to insert a transition (cross-dissolve) between two clips.
Can you advise me on this?... I posted a separate thread HERE on this topic, but I haven't got any further with finding an answer.
Thanks so much for your article,
    digi

  • Something happened, now I can't select clips in the timeline of my current project(in Elements 4)

I've been working on a project for a few days now, everything's been fine. Last night while editing, something happened when I was trying to add a transition between two clips. Now I can't select or edit any clips in the timeline anymore, and can't add new ones. When I click on the clips in the timeline, nothing happens. When I try to drag the select box around several of them, same thing. It acts like there's nothing to select. Same thing with right clicks, soundtrack mp3s, etc. The clips ARE still THERE though, and they all play fine in the preview screen in real time, and when I drag the slider back and forth along them.
All the clips are already rendered except the one transition I was adding when this started. When I hit 'Enter' to render, though, it says "Rendering 1 of 6 Audio Previews" instead of the usual x-number of video previews. I've not seen that before so it probably has something to do with all this.
It's ONLY with this one project. I can still edit and select clips in all my other projects as before.
I've already tried loading other projects and then coming back to this one, as well as closing the program and re-opening it. My current project is still stuck like this but the others are fine.
Please keep all this info in mind. This can't have anything to do with codecs or the clips being in the wrong format for the program. They're all regular AVI files and MP3s, I've been selecting and editing every single clip on this timeline dozens of times over the past few days with no problems. I'm just suddenly not able to select or edit them anymore or add anything new to the timeline, but they still play normally as previews.
I'm really hoping this is a simple thing where I've just tripped some setting and accidentally saved it that way and it can be easily changed back.

OK, then all that I suggested here:
Now, Exit from PrE, and Shutdown the computer completely. Wait a few moments, and then do a cold boot, launching PrE and Opening that Save_As Project. Do you now have the ability to edit the Clips on the Timeline?
If not, go to the location where you Copied the AutoSave folder, and view the files with Detail View ON. Then, look at the Date/Time of the files (probably will be 5 of them). Choose the last one written, Open that, and test. If no change, work backwards to the oldest.
If nothing is working, the only thing that comes to my mind would be an issue with the display driver, BUT that should affect all Projects, and not just this one. However, updating the video driver is always a good step, and should not hurt anything.
Note: many MP3's can cause all sorts of problems. I recommend always converting them to PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and replacing MP3's with those WAV files. One can use the great, free audio-editor, Audacity, to convert the MP3's.
If all of the above tests fail, let us know, and if you get any error, or warning messages, copy those down completely, and post those
    all failed too?
If so, there is nothing that I can suggest. It seems that your Project is hosed, and is very likely not recoverable.
    Sorry,
    Hunt

  • Shorten Clips In The Timeline And Shorten The Project Duration

When I shorten a clip in the timeline by dragging on one end a blank space appears. I know this is in order to keep the project the same duration but I do not want this. I am happen for the project duration to reduce in accordance with my timeline clip editing, without any blank spaces appearing.
How do I achieve this noting that this seems to be a recent default situation, whether I use FCPX 10.09 or 10.01.01.

Thank you Tom and Luis, but I'm not with any of this. I can add a clip to the timeline or insert a clip into it via the "arrow tools". If I attempt to shorten the clip IN the timeline there is a blank space representing the amount trimmed from the clip.
I want the next clip along to that I've trimmed to automatically move along the timeline albeit shortening the total project duration.
Pressing "A" on the keyboard doesn't achieve this.
I simply click on the clip in the timeline  to highlight it with the yellow margin. I then click on one "edge" with the arrows symbol and drag the edge inwards. This then leaves the space I do not want.
As for "Preferences" when I click this under "Final Cut Pro" i see nothing either relevant to this problem or that I could trash.

  • Can I arrange clips in the timeline based on when they were recorded?

Hello everyone, thanks to whoever took the time to give some attention to this post and excuse me for my bad english..
    This is the thing:
I have hundreds of clips from three different cameras that were covering a very long event and a single audio file (2 hour long) and I want to sync them together. I'm looking for a way to somehow arrange the clips in the timeline chronologically, based on their metadata of when the clips were recorded...
Note that I thought of this purely on instinct and I don't even know if it's possible, but it sound like such a good idea that I'm hoping Adobe thought of it already and since it would be very useful for my daily workflow, I've decided to do some research.
I have looked EVERYWERE, spent countless hours reading forums (even this one) but with no success and this is my last attempt...
I just hope you can understand what I'm looking for and that someone can help me!
    Thanks again for your time!
    Regards!

Thank you very much for your reply, shooternz!
Actually, since I have been researching this for some time, I already got to the point of sorting the clips in the project bin as far as to eneble the metadata column with the "date created", which even has the precise hh:mm:ss of when the clip was created.
My struggle is to organize the clips in a new sequence using maybe the time of the first clip as refference so that all the other clips are arranged chronologically, by the time that they were created.
I appeciate the tip, in fact I have been thinking of a way to plan the shooting better, but since I cover mainly long events, I have to constantly pause the camera, thus creating several clips...
    Thank you once more!
    Regards!

  • When I place a clip in the timeline and try to watch it, the viewer says "Unrendered" and it will not show the clip

When I place a clip in the timeline and try to watch it, the viewer says "Unrendered" and it will not show the clip. What do I need to do to fix this?

Option 1: Render the clip in FCE then watch it.
Option 2 (preferred): Convert the clip so it will match your Sequence settings in FCE prior to importing the clip into your project.  It will not need rendering if converted properly.

  • Multicam Clips in the Timeline and Image Stabilization

I've got a multicam clip in my timeline that I would like to use image stabilization on. What I'd like to do is:
double click on the clip which brings up the angle editor with the range and angle selected.
press cmd-B to blade the clip
    turn on image stabilization.
Unfortunately, step one doesn't work. I'm forced to open up the angle editor and manually skim and search for the desired angle and time range. It would be okay if the playhead in the angle editor was slaved to the one in the timeline. Then when you went into the angle editor you'd be right at the desired source material, but no, the two seem to be independant of each other. It makes performing the task much slower and more tedious. So much so I am convinced more experienced users are going to know a quicker way to do it.
So, does anyone know an easier work-around for this?

Thank you Tom and Luis, but I'm not with any of this. I can add a clip to the timeline or insert a clip into it via the "arrow tools". If I attempt to shorten the clip IN the timeline there is a blank space representing the amount trimmed from the clip.

  • How do you move a sound clip in the timeline?

I have not had this problem before. I have put many songs into the timeline, and repositioned them. Today I pulled up a project and attempted to reposition a song to fit in better with the clip, and I'm unable to do so. I can't select the song, or anything else. Obviously I have set or locked up this track, and I can't figure out how to unlock if that is what I have done. I have 6 songs on that track, Audio track 2, and I can't reposition any of them. I can't even remove them from that track. What am I doing wrong?

Hunt, most of my music files, over 9000 songs, are mostly mp3 files and a few are wma, and because of copyright laws I wouldn't use them in a commercial project I'm working on anyway. When I am working on a project for a client I will generally use higher quality WAV files. This project was being done just to learn some new techniques, gain some more experience with PPCS4, and expand my knowledge with the program. I have this huge number of music files and styles to work with, so I can do a great deal of experimentation to see what different songs can do to the mood of the video.
As a test, I did put the exact same songs into the timeline on a different audio track. The problem track is audio 2, and I duplicated those songs on audio 3. I did the exact same editing. I faded them in and out the same as before. Split one song into 3 sections had parts of it come in and out over a video section of 9 minutes duration. They are working perfectly. I was just working on one section of that project a half hour ago, and I was still able to select and move each of the four songs on that track any way that I wanted to. However, the track just above it in that same timeline, Track 2, is still frozen.
Hunt, just a moment ago I solved my problem. Still not being that familiar with the program, two days ago I know that I was playing with all of the controls, and I obviously hit one of them without knowing one of its side effects. I hit the show "show track keyframes". I'm sure that you know it, but I didn't realize that when that function is selected, you can't do much else with the track but play with those keyframe. Even though I didn't have the track locked, in the traditional way, it was still, for all practicall reasons, locked. I unchecked that function and now everything is back to normal again on that track.
Something very simple, as many things turn out to be when you understand it. However, maybe someone else will make the same mistake, and my posting here will help them.
I will use your suggestions for using .WAV files. Thank you again.

Subject: How do you move a sound clip in the timeline?
    Terry,
What is the purpose of using the .WMA files? I'm sure that you have a good reason, but they can be problematic, at best. I only use them as a trasfer medium, when I need to get a DD 5.1 SS soundtrack into Audition for editing. There, I break them out into 6 discrete .WAV files, edit in Multi-track Mode and then usually Export as the 6 discrete WAV's to be encoded to DTS, or similar.
If you do not have a compelling reason for using the .WMA, try PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit and see if the issues go away.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes please,

  • Why can't I drag a clip into the timeline?

I just loaded PP CD5 onto my Win 7 laptop.  I can import movie clips into my project, but I can't drag any of those clips into the timeline.  When I try to drag them, I get a hand with a "do not enter" symbol.  No error messages of any kind.
I vaguely remember having this same issue when I loaded PP CS5 on my Win 7 desktop several months ago, and I thought I found something on the forums that told me how to fix it, but I can't find it now.  Perhaps a change in the preferences?
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Did you actually create a sequence? If not, go to File > New > Sequence, or drag one of your clips to the New Item icon at the bottom of the Project Panel. You can also click that to get the New Sequence option.

  • Have the Clips, Lost the Timeline

I've read through the forums a bit, and have not found a specific answer to my problem. I'm sure it's out there, but I'm stressed so I'm throwing it out.
I run an old G4 Cube, updated to OSX 10.4. The 20 Gigabyte hard drive is pretty much full, so I have an 80 GB and a 500 GB external drive. I got a video camera a year ago, and finally got around to trying to make a movie from my clips in iMovie. I spent 10 hours on a 60 minute video over the past couple days.
I imported the clips no problem. I arranged them in the order I wanted, no problem. I added titles no problem. I was pretty proud of my work. I saved it and quit. Then when I come back to open it, I get a message saying "There are 125 stray clips in the project folder. Would you like to put them on the Clips Pane?" If I say no, the project is empty. If I say yes, all my clips, including the titles I created show up in the clips pane, but the timeline is blank. I assume I'd have to go back and re-order all the clips in the time line.
In the project folder is a quicktime movie that is my project up to the last save. It plays with all the clips and titles in the correct order. The problem is that I wanted to add a couple more clips and a couple more titles, and this quicktime movie is not editable.
The project folder is saved on an external HD, because the internal has only 4 GB free.
Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

If I understand you correctly, the project is on an external drive, right? If not, please say. And I assume there's sufficient free disk space on that drive to edit the project. At least 10 GB free. Preferably more.
If so, then you shouldn't have to move the project. It should be okay where it is.
iMovie 4 would sometimes "forget" all the clips in the project. Essentially, all the editing is discarded, leaving all the clips in the iMovie Trash. It sounds like that may have happened to your project. (This would sometimes happen when we emptied the iMovie trash.)
The project may be rescuable, however, without having to re-order the clips in the Timeline.
It's possible to import that small QuickTime movie you mentioned to a NEW iMovie project. The movie is a special kind of movie called a reference movie, which plays the clips in the Media folder of the project. When you import the movie to a new project, everything in the Timeline of Project A will arrive in Project B as a single clip. That's not ideal, but it may be good enough. It should let you finish the project.
There's one hurdle. iMovie 4 can import no more than 9 minutes of video at a time, and your movie is 60 minutes long. So it's necessary to split the QuickTime movie into 9-minute chunks that you can import. Our friends at Oakstreet Software offer a free Applescript script that will split the movie. QuickTime Pro is required to run the script, $30 from Apple.
    http://www.oakstreetsoftware.com/qtscript.php3
60 minutes is about 13GB, so you will need at least 25GB free on whichever drive you create the new project.
Until everything is complete do NOT save the project or make any other changes. Saving it will replace the QuickTime movie with a new empty movie. It will be empty because there's nothing in the Timeline.
It should be okay to make a duplicate of the QT movie and store the duplicate somewhere outside the project. Work with that.

  • How can I lock video clips to the timeline?

    Hello Apple discussion.
I know that holding down the command key disable ripping when triming.
But that doesn't work when deleting clips. It would be useful to lock videoclips to the timeline, so they keep their position.
Lock audio to playhead doesn't help the situation.
    Thank you for your time
    Attila

You cannot lock a video clip to the timeline. The program is designed so that when you delete a video clip, the other clips slide over to fill the gap. Otherwise you would have holes all over your project, or have to manually move them over. You would want to lock the audio clips to the non-deleted video clips, so that the audio slides over with them.
If you want to preserve the gap left by a deleted video clip, first insert in front of it a black clip of the same exact duration, and then delete the video clip. The black clip would hold all of the other clips in position, but leave you with a black hole to fill or delete. To make a black clip, separate two video clips on the timeline, and control-click on the empty space. In the resulting drop down menu, select Convert Empty Space to Clip. Then control-click on the black clip and in the resulting window adjust the time duration by overwriting the values in the time box and then clicking the Set button.

  • I am moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  how can I stop this?

need some help.  I'm moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  I don't want this effect.  How can I stop it?

To expand a little on John's questions and link, every clip and every sequence has its own frame dimensions (and pixel aspect ratio & frame rate). By default, Premiere preserves the dimensions (or "resolution") of a clip when you add it to a sequence. That means that if a clip's resolution is greater than that of the sequence, it will appear to be zoomed in on the frame. Conversely, if the clip is lower res than the sequence, it will appear shrunk, with black borders.
If all of your content is the same resolution (which is the ideal case), then you should use a sequence that matches. The easiest way to do so is the "New Item" method that John refers to--dragging a clip to the Project Panel's New Item button--or, in later releases of PPro CC, dragging it into an empty Timeline panel. If you're working with content of mixed resolution, then you have to pick your poison and scale smaller clips up or larger clips down. The latter option is generally preferred because the former--scaling clips up--often results in unacceptable pixelation.

  • Exporting clips in the timeline with handles

Is there a way to export a selected clip in the timeline with handles? I know you can export all the clips in the timeline with handles using Media Manager, but is there a way to do it with just one clip?
I should ask- is there a quicker way? because I know one way is to drag the clip up to V2 and just manually extend handles to the clip and export it that way. I was hoping for a quicker method. I need to export some self-containted clips that I can reinsert for sending the sequence to Color.

    Thanks. Snap is enabled.
I added 30 clips at once from the project bin onto the timeline. So I was really amazed that there were small gaps between some clips. When I tried to repair this (hold CTrl and move the clips to the left) the puzzle began. It happened that moving the clip only three frames to the left, I lost 15 seconds of the total. I discovered this was either a total loss of a clip (not he one I moved, but a clip say three clips to the right) or it was considerably shorter in time.
First I thougt it had to do with my good old dualcore (1.8Ghz), but on the new one (Quad 2.4Ghz) it is still the same.
This is the first time it happens (after 3 completed small projects).
From now on I will only drag one clip at the time to minimize the chance on this behaviour.
But you will understand, I'm not happy...
    Rob

  • My vidoe clips in the timeline have changed to a screen that says "offline media" in six different languages

my video clips on the timeline have changed to a red screen that states in six languages "offline media support"

    frustratedusere
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
If you opened a previously saved closed project and were greeted by a colorful media offline display and "Where is the file.....?" messages, there are at least two possibilities.
    1. You have move, deleted, or renamed files and folders that you imported into the project after you saved closed the project.
When you import media into the the project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals which are at a hard drive save location. However, the project needs to
trace back to those originals at the location where they were when you first imported them into the project. You can use the "Where is the file....?" messages to reconnect
your source media to the project. Can be time consuming and a nuisance.
    2. If you stored the project's source media on an external hard drive and that drive changed drive letter for some reason, this would create a media disconnect situation.
Correct the drive situation if this applies to you.
Please review and consider and supply more details. We can discuss this and other related matters (such as use of the Project Archiver) depending on your details.
    Thank you.
