No clue about faces

Either Faces developers don't have a clue, or I don't. I just started using iPhoto '09 on my new iMac today. At first, I opened an old iPhoto library I have on a hard drive. As it was updating the library, I could see that it was scanning my photos and identifying faces. I had to cancel the scan, as I didn't have time to wait 768 minutes for it to go through my 38,000 photos.
So tonight I started a new iPhoto library, and imported about 600 portraits of girls at a dance recital, many of whom returned in several different costumes. I thought Faces would be a great way to group these photos by each girl, but absolutely no luck. The Faces scan started, but I could see each face appear as I had with the old library. So I manually identified a few faces, and the results were absurd. Nearly every girl appeared as 'this person may also appear in these photos'. Even the dad whom I identified was apparently in photos of girls in butterfly wings.
So to get to the point, is Faces really absolutely useless, or is there I something I can do to make it work for me?

Have you looked at this tutorial: Find out how to organize using Faces?

    I purchased a used 2008 iMac. And although the previous owner said he deleted all of his information, his iCloud account is still the primary. I don't have a clue about what to do about it. I signed him out and logged in with my info, but still no go. Is there any way to eliminate his iCloud account and make mine the primary without rebooting it back to factory settings? There was an update, I believe, that I couldn't install because i didn't have his password that is what made me aware that his acct. was still active. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
    The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
    How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
    To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
    If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
              OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
              The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
              You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
    In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • After installing Leopard, my G4 will no longer boot in OS 9.22. (Classic still works, but I need it to boot in OS 9.)  Any clues about what the Leopard installer might have done to my machine that rendered OS 9 boot unusable? What can I do to fix it?

    After installing Leopard, my G4 will no longer boot in OS 9.22.
    (Classic still works, but I need it to boot in OS 9.)
    Any clues about what the Leopard installer might have done to my machine that rendered OS 9 boot unusable? (And what can I do to fix it?)
    Details:
    G4 Gigabit Ethernet
    Boot ROM version: 4.2.8fl
    Accelerator card added: 1.6 MHz
    1.5 Gig Ram
    I have erased the partition that had Leopard installed on it.
    I zapped the pram.
    In Open Firmware, I "reset-nvram", and then "reset-all"
    I tried to reinstall G4 FW Update 4.2.8, but that must be done when booted from OS 9, and of course, that's the problem: it won't boot into 9.
    I tried restarting from 9.2.1 DVD.
    I tried restarting from an external firewire drive containing OS 9.2.2.
    I tried moving a fresh OS 9.2.2 system folder into an empty partition on an internal hard drive. (Partition was created WITH OS 9 drivers installed.)
    All attempts to boot into OS 9 give me the same results - grey screen - no spinning beach ball, no icons or logos - just a blank grey screen.
    This machine still works fine in OS 10.3 and 10.4, and it worked fine for many years booting into OS 9, until I installed Leopard, and I haven't been able to boot into OS 9 since then, although I have done considerable research online and tried many things.
    I have since learned that this machine does not support Leopard - 10.5. Fine, but how did it break 9.2.2?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for checking in, BDAQua.
    Problem solved.
    In the docs that came with my Powerlogix accelerator card, I found this sentence buried:
    "If you reset the PRAM, the NVRAM code for OS9 compatibility is cleared, so you will have to boot from the Firmawre Update CD and perform this process again in order to boot in OS9."
    The "process" it's referring to is the process of setting up the NVRAM for booting into OS9 from the CD.
    Fortunately, I was able to find the disk, and it worked as expected. I can now, once again boot into OS9.
    Conclusion: My (unadvised) attempt to load Leopard on this old machine apparently reset the PRAM on the accelerator card and cleared the NVRAM code for OS9 boot. Although I did attempt to reset the NVRAM via Open Firmware, it did not reset it on the accelerator card.
    So, thank you BDAQua, for your "Ah yes" . . . that's all I needed to steer me in the right direction.
    Gratefully,

    Correct.
    After that just select the new folder location in iTunes> Advanced settings.
    Incorrect.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder.
    This will read the iTunes library.itl file in this folder and the library as it was previously will be opened.

    I really appreciate the fast sent solution about my failure to burn DVDs with Lion, but I am 89 years old and think I know something about computers, but don't have a clue about ZAPPing PRAM nor RESET SMC.  I also can't find any evidence of a preserved earlier OS (Snow Leopard).  I also don't know how to partition further my drive after all this time…(I used to have Parallels partitioned) but as I said I cannot find any where on the HD SN.  Is it possible that it doesn't exist anymore?  Not too technical, please, unless that is the only possible answer to this whole delemna..

    Blue colored text in these forums usually indicates a clickable link. The two I posted in https://discussions.apple.com/message/18789716#18789716 bring up Apple's articles on those subjects. For partitioning information, peruse Disk Utilities help files, especially

  • Clues about query's - Search for date type at INBOX

    Hello Everyone,
    At IC Webclient, does anyone experiment to add a new search date type at INBOX, at "search for date" search parameter?
    I added a new date type at Date Management, ZDATA_PR.
    When I try to assemble the query parts, I use something like this:
    CL CL_CRM_QUERYAUI_RUN_BTIL
    METH READ_BUSINESS_TRANSACTIONS
    CALL METHOD cl_crm_report_qupart=>get_qupart_by_token
        EXPORTING
          iv_token     = 'DAT'
          iv_date_type = 'ZDATA_PAR'
          iv_from      = ls_query_aui-from
          iv_to        = ls_query_aui-to
        IMPORTING
          ev_qupart    = ls_qupart_range-querypart.
      APPEND ls_qupart_and   TO lt_query.
      APPEND ls_qupart_range TO lt_query.
    However, I'm rewarded with an error message telling me that I have problems with the query.
    Does anyone can give me clues how to perform this action? I'm clueless and there's not almost no information about this...
    Thanks and Kind Regards
    Bruno Garcia

    Just to solve a mistake at example code:
    CALL METHOD cl_crm_report_qupart=>get_qupart_by_token
    EXPORTING
    iv_token = 'DAT'
    iv_date_type = 'ZDATA_PR'
    iv_from = ls_query_aui-from
    iv_to = ls_query_aui-to
    IMPORTING
    ev_qupart = ls_qupart_range-querypart.
    APPEND ls_qupart_and TO lt_query.
    APPEND ls_qupart_range TO lt_query.
    does anyone has a suggestion or a clue to give?
    Thanks

  • Any clue about a 64 bit iMac ?

    Hi,
    I'm thinking -as well- about buying a new iMac. A friend who has been an iMac user since.... well... no clue, long ago, meant that end of the year the "new" iMacs 64 bit will come out.
    hmm... unfortunately, all based on speculations, i suppose.
    (http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macsonintel/topic3804.html)
    I know it is almost stupid to talk about this subject when the new iMacs Intel Duo just came out. But i do need to buy a new PC around the end of the year and was wondering if anybody has heard about this ?
    Anyways i suppose Mr. Jobs has something up his sleeves to draw the attention of all the millions of ppl looking to buy a new system after the new Windows Vista comes out around end of the year, right ?!
    Well, i know maybe this topic doesn't fit here, but i couldn't find another place where to put it.
    Cheers, cj.

    Okay bottom line is Apple wont be shipping 64-Bit computers until they can reconfigure it because that would totally go against Apples move to intel...remember the "performance per watt" by Steve Jobs? Well 64-Bit will totally go against what apple believes because 64-Bit Chips will take more power and it will heat up more than the regular 32-bit chips unless Apple and Intel figures out a solution to minimize the power consumption.
    Maybe we'll see a 64-Bit PowerMac that will run intel in the near future but I don't think any other mac line will go 64-Bit.
    As far as I know there the PowerMac G5 Quad that is 64-Bit powered but it's the IBM processors are still not fast enough to really push the 64-Bit to its core. Apple could have just used the Intel EM64T instead of their core duo but intel still has a lot to work on with their 64-Bit Chips. Imagine the iMac or any mac product running Intel EM64T, it would be a disaster. Right now the new core duo iMac aren't up to part and even intel admitted that their EM64T chips still needs tweaking.
    So we probably wont see any mac with 64-Bit chip any time soon..give apple and intel maybe 2-3 years before the next move since apple has just started the core duo transition and they're not even fully intel-ized yet so it's going to be a long wait if your waiting for 64-bit mac.
    The core duo are pretty fast but you have to understand, all the problems the consumers are experiencing isn't gonna be the whole time since it's apples softwares and such it's not necessarily the hardwares..if thats the case apple will have the patches and updates hopefully to solve these issues. As soon as the transition is complete, meaning all the mac apps out there are universal, then you start to see the performance apple has promised.
    I suggest waiting for the PowerMac line because it's the "PRO" of all the pro products apple offers so you can wait for that to go intel as well and thats my best bet if I were you, it would deliver such power you need for pretty much anything and maybe even better than the 64bit powered pc's out there since at this moment 64-Bit hasn't been perfected. As AMD and Intel stated, and even apple... "It's the future of computing" they didn't say "the future is now" so basically what I think they meant by "It's the future of computing" is that they are still working on it.

  • What about face tracking for shockwave games?

    Hi all,
    I recently come across this video on youtube
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wznrHpL8AJ8
    and I start thinking that if we could implement something similar
    for our shockwave games, the degree of realism and imersion would
    increase rapidly. The blog of the person that did this is:
    http://www.ar-lab.info/mt/weblog/archives/2008/02/face_tracking_ui_test.html.
    The sample application that he provides comes with an ocx which in
    some machines will fail to register correctly (use a tool called
    dependancy walker to look for any missing dll. Most of the dll are
    located in the opencv bin directory.). After registering the ocx
    succesfuully I tried to use it director but without success. I am
    getting an error message the component fails to load. My best guess
    is that the ocx misses a GUI. I think if someone can open the ocx
    see whats wrong with it and fix it it will be a valuable addition
    for the shockwave community. Any ideeas?

    Do you have iMessage? I think as long as that person has iMessage you can use Face Time to call each other.
