No compressor or mpeg2 export what next

OK enjoying new Intel Macpro, installed all my editing software, FCP 5.1.4, Motion, DVDSP 4, compressor 2. Lo and behold, big surprise, Compressor 'cannot connect to background process'. In the past this app has been a curse for me but I always had a QT mpeg2 export option so I reached for it and I no longer have it although I have QT pro.
Followed apples exhaustive and exhausting troubleshooting procedure ( into two days now with this painful goose chase )
updated everything but still 'cannot connect to background process'. Even exported a QT movie and tried importing it into Compressor but same result.
I imported the qt movie into DVDSP and it encoded it but I've no control over what its doing so what else are my options for encoding mpeg2?

Have you tried this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93234

  • Compressor 2.0.1 and Mpeg2. What to do?

I know this has been discussed to death... I have searched and read alot of posts. I find posts that link to other posts.. that have now dropped off the forum. So it has been a little hard to get a solid idea of where to go from this point. I'm hoping a few of you can chime in here with your opinion on the current capability of compressor for MPEG2 2-pass VBR encoding, and how to achieve acceptable results.
I have had problems encoding 2-pass VBR mpeg2 files. I get blocks that bounce up and down in certain scenes. I have attributed this to the known problems with compressor, and have been using 1-pass CBR at about 7.0mbps. The results are ok but much softer than the original footage on DV Tape.
Is the situation really as bad as it seems with compressor? Should I invest in a different encoder for encoding MPEG2 for DVD, and if so which encoder... and how much am I going to have to spend?
err.. I'm frustrated with the whole thing!
    Thanks,
    Matt

I get blocks that bounce up and down in certain scenes.
That doesn't sound much like what I'm seeing with Compressor's two-pass VBR. The only unresolved quality-of-image problem I've seen in Compressor 2 is the random occurrence of compression artifacts and these look just like the type of defect that you see when you use a very low bit rate setting (in fact, based upon my analysis with Digigami's MPressionist that's exactly what they are). So, you may select a high-quality 6.2Mbps setting but intermittently and rarely you may see a few frames that look like they were done at 2Mbps (or similar).
Are you sure you aren't seeing the defects that are caused by using Compressor v1.X presets with Compressor 2? That particular problem caused small to medium sized blocks of white or near white to "dance" around in parts of your MPEG2 encodings. This latter problem is avoided by simply removing or not using presets that were created in earlier versions of Compressor (pre-version 2.0). If that could be your problem, refer to the following link from Apple:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?linkprocess_@@.68b5fbd7
As for the two-pass VBR compression artifacts I mentioned earlier, some installations seem to have them while others do not (or the ones that seem not to have the problem just haven't noticed the random artifacts).
In my experience, the degree of problems with two-pass VBR seem to vary from job to job. Some sequences may only be very mildly degraded (or visually unaffected) while others will have obvious and distracting artifacts. I think it may depend upon the nature of the video and the length of your sequences. Of course, those two variables can combine in a number of ways, so you really can't predict what may or may not turn out okay.
To be fair, however, you've got to note that some users seem pretty confident that their systems are free from this problem. Some even claim that Compressor 2 produces better output than did previous versions of the software. I've also read one review that was written by a professional videographer that said that Compressor 2 produced the finest MPEG2 output that he had ever seen (posted on the internet by a commercial, pro-oriented media outlet) . It seems pretty obvious that your so-called mileage may vary.

  • MPEG2 Export failed

    Hi all,
i´m running in problems generating MPEG2 (m2v) with compressor.
That´s what i´m usually doing (worked 100 times before, last time 28.03.2008):
I´m rendering out a video MJPEG A PAL from AfterEffects.
Then I´m using a Compressor Droplet to generate a approval Version for my clients (QT Sor3 halfres) and a MPEG2 file as final delivery.
But now the MPEG2 Export fails. Find the error report at the end of this thread.
I tried it with the last files when it worked, also failed.
I tried another MPEG2 Preset (the apple ones) -> failed.
Playing MPEG2 Files using QT-Player and VLC works fine.
    Any help highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

The source frame rate is 23.976, so I guess I would go with 24p. My intention is to upload the file to a streaming video website. They have their specs laid out for me, I just happen to be new to all of this so I am having a tough time meeting them.
My question right now is, if i have selected the MXF OP1a XDCAM option with XDCAM 50 NTSC (4:2:2) video codec, will the export be in mpeg2 and what will my bit rate be? I have no way of viewing the bit rate with this configuration.
Here is a screen grab of their required specs:

  • Can Compressor make MPEG2 files that will work on a Princeton Video server?

I am responsible for selection of equipment and software for the local Public Access studio. I am trying to be sure if Final Cut Studio will output the format we need.
We need to output video files that are compatible with our Princeton Server Group B1400 Digital Video Server. We have found it is very difficult to be certain if a particular program will generate what we need. Below are the specs for our server.
Basically it is a a rather specific form of MPEG2. I see on the Apple web site that Compressor will do MPEG2, but that is qualified with "Quicktime", and is mostly described as being for DVD production. It seems that those are not necessarily compatible with our server. It wants a plain MPEG2 file in the format given in the specs. The server is a Linux system and its software does not know about special formats like say Quicktime or DVD might wrap around the basic data. It seems to want just plain files of MPEG2 video (and audio of course) data.
One of my sources of my concern is that in spite of what Apple says about Compressor doing MPEG2, the makers of the server say FCP does not create output for it.
I need to be assured about this before we invest in software and possibly new hardware.
These are the specs for the encoding the server needs:
    Princeton Server Group
    B1400 Digital Video Server
    Encoding Requirements
In order to ensure optimum video playout quality on the B1400 Digital Video Broadcast Server, MPEG video and audio content must be encoded as follows.
    • Video files for play-out must be encoded in multiplexed MPEG-2 program stream (PS) or MPEG-1 system stream format. Video can be encoded at rates up to 15 Mb/s.
    • Use 4:2:0, not 4:2:2 encoding.
    • Audio must be encoded as MPEG1 Layer II, AC-3 Stereo, or Linear PCM.
    • The video and audio presentation time stamp (PTS) values in a file must be continuous and increasing. The time between the first and last time stamps in a file should reflect the actual duration of the file.
    Encoding Recommendations
    • Resolution: 720 X 480 or 704 X 480 in NTSC
    • Closed GOP (Group of Pictures) with an “I-frame” every 15 frames
    • Audio bit rate of 256 kbps
    • Sampling rate of 48 kHz
    • Program stream files should have one end code (00 00 01 b9) at the very end of the file.
    • Recommended bit rates for various types of video content are as follows:
o 4 Mbps for good quality video with low motion
o 6 Mbps for good quality with average motion
o 8 Mbps for good quality with high motion and
o 10 Mbps for high quality with high motion content.
    • MPEG2 files are constructed from multiplexed audio and video streams. The length of video and audio stream segments within the MPEG file should be identical.

    Hey Terry
in the corporate world wee have to contend with clients who are all windows based and prevented from installing anything on their systems.
    I use Flip4Mac, Studio Pro HD, with the following mix of settings;
Open clip in QT, I do also use compressor but for some reason I like using QT for exporting to WMV.
    File/Export
    Export:movie to windows media
Use: One pass VBR, Presentation (high), 16:9
    Options>
Advanced... input type: interlace Lower field first(DV), output type: progressive
    Coding method: Two pass VBR
Give this a shot and then tweak to suit your needs, oh and you can save your settings as a preset for QuickTime.
Within Compressor there is no export to WMV, so you have to start with another setting and create your own saving it for future use.

  • I just need this thing to work, already wasted an hour on it! what next??

clafter you pay, what next?  I just need to update a downloaded flyer, time deadline, no clear instructions and not workingyet on my computer!

What happens when you try to use it? With the Export PDF button in Adobe Reader? Or visiting http://exportpdf.adobe.com/
But don't expect too much. PDF files aren't made for editing. The layout may change beyond recognition.

  • Looking for Best MPEG2 Export

So I just created a DVD in FCP HD and DVD SP. The animated menu was created using FCP and Photoshop. I exported the Animated Menu as an MPEG2 in FCP using Compressor. My boss, who has the worst case OCD and and even worst of ADHD, says the quality isn't good enough. He said the Harry Potter DVDs look better than mine. I told him to call Waner Bros. He didn't like that. Anyway...does anyone have an idea how to get Harry Potter quality on my MPEG2 Exports.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Make a New Preset in Compressor, MPEG2.
Use 7.5 average, 7.5 high, 2 Pass VBR, Best.
Then for your audio, use A.Pack or make a new audio preset in Compressor 2.
    Under AUDIO tab:
    - Audio Coding Mode: Choose 2/0 (L, R).
    - Data rate: 192 kbps is the Dolby-recommended setting
    if you're just using 2/0 L,R Stereo.
    - Dialog Normalization: -31 dBFS.
    Under BITSTREAM tab:
    - Dolby Surround Mode: Choose NOT Dolby Surround Encoded,
so DVD players will know it's not surround.
    - I also un-check the "Copyright Exists", so as not to
    hinder copying the DVD.
    Under PREPROCESSING tab:
    - Compression Preset: Change to None.
    - Leave all checkboxes at the default.
This should create a decent quality encode.
But, your boss has to realize that the Hollywood movie are encoded with very expensive hardware encoders with multiple passes.
There is no way that Compressor or any software encoder is going to come close to those encoders.
    See how those settings go...

  • Mpeg2 export option gone?

I have found that Apple no longer puts the mpeg2 export option through quicktime or FCP. It kind of makes you use the super slow less quality compressor [in my eye]. I need this option .... My other rig has it somewhere but I cant find the extension anywhere .... does anyone know an easy fix to get this back on my new rig?

Should be there using QT Export from Final Cut Pro (the second Quicktime Export not Final Cut Self Contained or Reference Version) and also still in QT, at least for me, Reinstall may help (I am using Tiger 10.4.2 and the recent Final Cut Suite)

  • MPEG2 Exporter Question (16:9 vs 4:3)

When I want to export a 4:3 to M2V, I always render my movies at 720x480, because the exporter is terrible at scaling. If I try to export a 640x480 movie to M2V, it always is distorted when I play it back. If I render the movie at 720, I don't have this problem I assume because the exporter doesn't have to scale the movie. Problem solved.
What size do I need to render my movie so that the MPEG2 exporter doesn't have to scale it when I want a 16:9 output? I've read 720x405, but the exporter always gives me a 720x404 and I haven't been able to get a clean output yet at 16:9.
I just need to know what resolution to give the exporter so that it doesn't have to re-scale the output at 16:9.
    Thanks.
    -Tony

Standard definition NTSC 4:3 and 16:9 both use 720x480 -- they are just flagged and scaled differently upon playback (656x480 or 875x480).

  • My 4TB G-Drive failed after (Firewire) installation of Maverick.  A 1TB G-drive using USB works.  What next?

I have an IMac running OS X 10.9.1.
I purchased a new 4TB G-Drive.  After installation with Time Machine the drive correctly made backups for about 2 weeks.  I installed Maverick.
Then I began to see the message “Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder”
I called G-Technology. Using the erase function of Disc Utility we received the message “Disk erase failed.  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk”. It was determined that the disk was bad and I returned it to the vendor.
A second and then a third disk experienced similar failures after only two backups.  G-Technology then said the problem was a computer problem
I called Apple support and allowed them access to my computer.  After their intervention the disk worked for two backups and then failed.
    I purchased a 1 TB G-Drive yesterday.
I thought I would give it a test and so I made it the backup drive for time machine.  It made a primary backup and has been continuing to back up without the feared error message.
I went to the internet and have discovered that my problem has been experienced by others. It only occurs after an upgrade to Maverick.
It also only occurs with a Firewire connection.
The new drive has a USB connector.  It works fine.
    What next?

Which iMac (please be very specific) and also why have you not updated to 10.9.2?

Besweet, I'm having the very same problem with 60GB colour which was bought new and worked for 6 months before suddenly just not being recognised by PC. I hadn't changed anything at all.
I've followed all troubleshooting advice and reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod updater software but all troubleshooting routes seem to hit the dead end of either the need to access the iPod via the PC (which isn't possible as it's not showing up at all) or the iPod in disc mode stuck at "ok to disconnect".
It's still under 1yr warranty so will have to take to a dealer.
I'm sorry that's not much help for you but at least you know it's not a unique problem.

  • HT203055 I can't sign in or out of iCloud.  Forgot the password to an email address I no longer have access to.  What next.

I can't sign in or out of iCloud.  Forgot the password to an email address I no longer have access to.  What next?  From what I'm reading in the forums, once the email address is set up it cannot be changed.  True?  If so, um, stupid.
Message to log in to iCloud every time I reply or forward an email.  Have to indicate to ignore every time.  Annoying.

    Hello florabb,
You may be able to change or reset the password on this old iCloud/Apple ID account, even if you no longer have access to the email address associated with it. Once the password is changed/updated, you should be able to log your iPhone out of the old iCloud/Apple ID account and log in to the correct new account. You may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support
Sign in with a different Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Sincerely,
    - Brenden

My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?
My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

This is the iPad in the Enterprise forum. You'll be more likely to get help with your issue if you ask in the appropriate iPod forum.
    Regards.

  • Just tried to update my iPad 2 to the current iOS, and I got an error that said the update wouldn't install. The iPad is stuck in a funny mode with the apple and spinning wheel showing. I can't power it down or restart it. What next? Thanks.

Try a hard reset: hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
