No configured time machine found

Upgraded to Lion recently and since have had issues with time machine. Continuous amber flashing light, I have tried re-setting and when attempting to view through the utilities I get message no configured time machine found - airport utility will continue searching.
Can anyone step me through what I should do please?

I could say get rid of Lion.  but that is probably not acceptable.
The airport utility in Lion isn't a lot of use.. so Apple released a real utility 5.6 for lion with some setting up stuff in it.
You will probably need to reset the TC and redo the setup.. you might also need to plug in ethernet to accomplish this.
Stability of the TC with Lion is also an issue.. but get started and see what happens.
Your issue is with Time Capsule by the way.. ie the hardware box that is a router and hard disk.. not Time Machine the backup software in the computer.

  • Any way to configure time machine?

    Hello:
I have heard that there is a way to configure time machine so you can specify how often to back up the hard drive. Any thoughts?
I am not sure why Apple chose not to allow the user to specify the time interval. Right now, I have 150 GB on my hard drive and over 300 GB in backups.
    Thanks,
    P

There is a third-party utility called TimeMachineScheduler - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Hello, my mail is gone and I can't find it anywhere. Its not in library and I have not configured Time Machine yet. Help please?!

Use Find Any File, if the old messages might have been in a specific mailbox, to look for a file by the name of the mailbox to see if there are any larger versions of that mailbox.
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
If your Mail is indeed gone, you may be able to recover it with one of the data recovery tools here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
But act quickly.  Every action while the computer is turned on weakens its chances of recovery.  There is a slim chance also your email provider may have tape backup from before you checked your messages and after it arrived at their server for certain messages.  You may want to ask them if that might have happened.

  • Configuring Time Machine to backup certain folders and files.

Can it be done? I have 3 externals and don't want it to back up one of them. I removed it from the backup list but it still continues to backup that particular drive. Also wondering if I could configure Time Machine to not backup certain folders. I felt like when I first set up Time Machine, I was able to do this.
    Thanks everyone.

    Hello Warren:
That should be available to you in system preferences>Time Machine>options.

  • How do i set up/configure time machine and my first time capsule ?

I want to set up my time machine. When I click at the top of my toolbar it says time machine not configured.
When I turn time machine on through system preferences/time machine - it then prompts me to set up my first time capsule.
When I press 'select back up disk' it prompts me to a page where I cannot 'use disk' I can only click on cancel or 'other time capsule'.
When I click on 'other time capsule' I get taken to a screen with a globe on it and although it says 'internet connected' it also says 'no airport base stations have been found'.
How do I do up time machine/set up my first time capsule ?

  • Can no longer configure Time Machine

I upgraded to OS 10.5 from 10.3 a few weeks ago, Time Machine was working fine till today, when menu bar says Time Machine not configured, the Lacie disk I back up onto (which shows on desktop) now says Lacie and no longer shows the greenish TM logo (my HD on desktop still shows it okay) and when I turn TM on in prefs, it shows nothing to choose as my backup disk. I'm very confused...
    Thanks in advance.

The preferences file may be corrupted.
Do a "full reset," per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that doesn't help, your backups may be corrupted.
Repair them, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.

  • OSStatus error 2 while configuring time machine on stora NAS

anyone have the same problem? Have you gon any suggestion?
My stora is up-to-date on 12 november 2011.

I had the same problem. WD does indeed support Time Machine set up on the WD World.
The acrobat file walking you through the 15 second set up [hurrah] can be found here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld [click on the user guide link to download].
My problem was that I was trying to login using my user name rather than the wd_backup that is required via Time Machine.... did not read the set up instructions very carefully.

  • Configure Time Machine to only backup changes?

After I setup an exernal drive on my network, I started using Time Machine. However, I did not know how slow my computer would become when it backs up and it backs up constantly. This is on my home computer, and there isn't that much irreplaceable data, I just want to backup documents and my photo library as they change. But it seems like Time Machine keeps backing up too much. I may not make any new documents or import any new files, and yet when time machine is backing up it says it's backing up several gigabytes; and it does so while slowing down my internet and computer processes.
All I want to do is have it backup documents and photos/media. I know you can choose to exclude certain things, but is there a way to configure it so it only backs up the things that I choose?

    Try a program called:  SuperDuper!
It is free, and there is a paid version with more features, but with SuperDuper! you can:
Choose only what you want to back up, or like with Time Machine, back up everything.
Unlike Time Machine, there are not any files to choose from by "going back in time" to grab a file that you did last week.
However, it will give a "snapshot" of what is going on at the time of the SuperDuper! backup.  And, the backup is bootable   You can start your computer, or ANY computer with the SuperDuper! backup disk by holding down the alt/option key during the boot, and select the SuperDuper! drive.  You can boot from there and actually use it to do work.
SuperDuper! - a great alternative backup solution you should check out.  It is made by "Shirt Pocket."  Here's a link to information about SuperDuper! and on that page is a download link:  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
By the way, I use both Time Machine AND SuperDuper!
    Good luck!

  • Unable to configure Time Machine backups to shared volume on network

I've been unable to coax Time Machine (TM) into using a networked shared volume that SuperDuper! accesses without a hitch.
My wife and I have laptops (TiBook and MacBook Pro, respectively), and we have a G4 Mac Mini with an external 300 GB HD. The Mini is connected to a wired Ethernet port on a GigE Airport base station (I've long ago given up on connecting that HD to the Airport). Our laptops connect wirelessly. All three machines are now running 10.5, and I've checked that the Mini is sharing the external HD via System Preferences. My wife and I both have accounts on the Mini, and those accounts provide read/write access on the external HD. Mounting that volume from our laptops works perfectly, as does backing up to it using SuperDuper! TM, however, doesn't recognize that volume as a backup location.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Andreas

Adapting the instruction in this post worked for us. I connected to the Mini via ssh and entered the commands to enable the external HD. It then showed up as a TM backup location on both of our computers, and the progress meters for the initial backup are ticking away.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • Configuring Time machine to Restore after a failer

    Hi
how to Configurr Time machine to Restore after a failer ? should i just set the time machine to backup to the external hard disk that have the backup and it will automatically detect it and can use it ? what if there is another backups for another Mac's ?

Do you mean you want to recover your entire system from your TM backups? If so, see item 14 in +Frequently Asked Questions+ at the top of this forum for details.
Or do you mean, once your Mac is recovered, how to start new TM backups?
When you first boot after restoring, you may want to immediately turn Time Machine off, as it's next backup will probably be a full one -- everything it just restored will be backed-up again. You cannot prevent this, only delay it. It will of course take quite a while, and a lot of space on your TM disk, so you may wish to wait until you're sure your system is the way you want it, or even erase your TM disk with Disk Utility and let your backups start anew.
what if there is another backups for another Mac's ?
That may become a problem. TM knows which backups are for which Mac, and will not mix them. But if there's not room for the first backup of the restored Mac (see above), you have two bad choices: erase the disk, and start both Macs over again with TM; or delete all the backups for the failed Mac via the TM interface (see item 12 of the same article).
If you decide to erase the disk completely, you may want to partition it before beginning backups, so each Mac's backups have their own, exclusive partition, to prevent this hassle in the future. See item 5 for instructions if you want to do this.

  • Error while configuring Time Machine for nfs

    Hi,
I am trying to set up time machine to back up on a remote nfs share. After following instructions on http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=141960 I see the share appearing on the list when I click "select backup disk" in the time machine preferences. However, when I select the disk I get an error:
Time Machine can't access the backup disk "share".
The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 1.)
What does the error mean? Any ideas how to solve this? The nfs share is mounted and accessible under /Volumes and I can read/write on it.
    Cheers,
    Pieter

Apple does not support this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
TM needs certain things, such as an Apple *Partition Map Scheme* and Format, to work properly. The method you're using apparently doesn't allow something TM needs.
Some hacks that worked on Leopard do not work on Snow Leopard.
If the hack you're using doesn't work, you need to talk to it's authors.

  • Can you configure Time Machine to backup external HDD's too

I have my "stuff" on 3 separate external HDDS - 1 for photos (50GB), 1 for Music (140GB) and 1 for VIDEO (350GB).
I want to buy a 2TB drive as a backup drive and have time machine manange this so that the MAC and the 3 external drives are all backed up to this 2TB drive.
Is this possible with TIMEMACHINE and secondly, even if it is, is there a better 3rd party application for managing this?
    Thanks for any help

TM does back up directly attached external drives that are formatted as Mac OS Extended, but you must specifically include them. I think they are excluded by default in the Options… area of TM Prefs.
You can always find something better depending on how you frame the criteria. You should always have more than one backup of the items you describe, with at least one off-site. As drive prices have dropped significantly, this is more a reality for the home users as compared to corporate endeavors.
There are several programs that work well for that. Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper both have the benefit of being able to make an bootable clone of your startup drive--nice feature if your boot drive fails. They are also starting to make Fire Safes with a USB drive inside for backup. I believe Retrospect Backup is still around, also.
I've heard of people who swap drives for TM so that they get two backup sets, but I haven't tried that. Mostly, I back up the pictures to iPhoto Libraries on DVD.
Cloud backup services are starting to gain steam. Carbonite, Mozy, DropBox… These all scare me as I don't have physical control of the media--but that might be a good thing.

  • Configure Time Machine separately for each user?

I have two user accounts on my Mac, a work account and a home account. At work, they just got a new Xserve and we're being encouraged to use that for Time Machine backups. At home, I've got a mini with an attached external drive that I'd like to use.
According to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5752907, TM wants to back up all accounts on the machine by default. For my backup at work, I've excluded everything except my work user account directory. It seems to be basically working — it's slow and quirky but I guess that's "normal".
Now for my home backup, I want to exclude everything except my home user account directory. I'm a little concerned though, since all the excludes I set up in the work account are also showing up in the home account. Is there anyway for different users to have different TM settings?

    1. Will Time maching will back these up so that if I were to crash this computer or get a new one, they will all transfer over, and are safe there?
    Yes.
    2. I tend to move my laptop around alot so if I am going to turn off time maching should I turn the program itself off, and then eject the disc?
Not strictly necessary, but don't just yank the data cable while a backup is taking place.
    3. If I can do the above, when I plug the external harddrive back in a day or two later, will it just begin backing up from where it left off?
    Yes.
    4. Since I have such a small amount of space that is being backed up to a terabyte harddrive do I need to partition it for any reason or is it alright to just let it back up forever until it fills up then starts deleting old stuff?
You don't need to partition unless you want to use some of the space for other purposes. Keep the TM repository on a partition by itself.
