No Connection to Dell monitor

My MacBook Air will not reliably connect to my Dell flatscreen monitor. I have the adapter and have tried 3 so its not the adapter. The Dell shows "Entering Power save" and does just that. At some point, sometimes, the Connection does happen. Not always.

I've tried the same cable with a borrowed Macbook Air and there's still no signal to the Dell.
I was thinking of getting a new cable but was wondering how a faulty cable would cause the mouse lag when I have both hdmi and mdp connected.

Max resolution connecting to dell monitor

i am dumb so please pretend i'm your mom trying to set this up and asking the Q . i have a 3 yr old dell 24" (DVI/VGA) monitor and i'd like to connect my 13" MBP to it. i bought the 'mini displayport to DVI adapter' for my mbp and have connected to my monitor, but the max resolution i can achieve under displays is 1280 x 800 to the monitor, so beats the point of using the larger monitor. and the res isn't too crisp either.
am i hosed? if i buy a new monitor to connect to my mbp, can i get finer resolution (i.e. at least 1920x1200)?
or is the 13" mbp limited to 1280 x 800????

Mirrored or not?
When mirrored, you use a compromise between what the built-in screen wants and what the external screen wants. If you want to Mirror, you have hit your limit.
If you uncheck Mirrored, you get Extended Desktop, and the | Arrange | pane is added.
Using the arrange pane, you drag the little screens to represent how your real screens are on the bench. The mouse can move across the boundary between the screens and onto the other screen.
Choose the Display pane. You get a separate resolution setting FOR each screen ON each screen.

Connecting a DELL monitor to a broken screen G4 powerbook

I want to connect a tft monitor to a broken screen G4. Can I do this without being able to use the computer screen to configure the settings.
......I was thinking about a std VGA connection into the mini DVI via an adaptor......but then realized it might not be the 'plug and play' simplicity I had first thought it might be.
Maybe someone has done this and had some success!

You might want to repost in the 12-inch PowerBook area instead of the 17-inch forum. My 17" has a full-size DVI port, not the mini, so finding people who've tried multiple adapters may be easier in the other forum.
Still, I believe that, as long as the computer detects the second display at startup, it should "just work."

Connecting a Dell monitor to macbook...

I have a Dell monitor that's just lying around in my room. I want to use it as a "second display" for my macbook. I realized that I can't just plug it in because the cable doesn't match.
I've been trying to find the appropriate cable for it, but I'm getting so confused with all of the DVI and VGA, etc.

Connecting 2 dell monitors via DVI to MBP.

Hi folks.
I want to have 3 screens in total.
1 built in MBP dispaly + 2 other dell displays.
Obviously there is just one display porton my mac, how i connect the other two dell dispalys to my Mac.
The Dell's have display port, vga and DVI ports on them.
Do i need to purchased a cable or adapter to achieve my desired configuration.?

You didn't specify the sizes of those monitors. But assuming the resolutions fit within the limitiations of these adapters you could use something like the following for one of the displays:
Newer Technology USB to DVI / HDMI / VGA HD Video Display Adapter
Or just search for USB to video converters.
For the other you could use a DVI adapter directly into the video port.
The reason the monitor sizes is important is because for resolutions above 1920 x 1200 you need a dual link dvi adapter for dvi connection. So assuming you have a mini-displayport (or thunderbolt) video port (you didn't specify your model of computer either) then you could use,
For single link DVI:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt to DVI Adapter
For dual link DVI:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt + USB to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

I am sure your problem must have been sorted out by now, but for all current and future buyers for the dell U2414H and having an apple computing device, mac, macbook, pro etc, the monitor works perfectly out of the box when I connected with a mini DP(thunderbolt port) to HDMI output (U2414H), it just ran out of the box, without any issues, it even worked simply for my bootcamp windows. So no need to fret before purchasing one, simply go ahead and get it, it's the Monitor with most appealing edge giving you only a screen to view at, I was also considering between the U2412M and the U2414H, I think I've made a great choice.

Trouble connecting Powermac G5 to Dell monitor

I recently aquired a G5(June 2004 model)and I am trying to connect my Dell monitor(model S2009W)to it. The monitor has both VGA and DVI inputs. I have tried connecting with a DVI cable and also a DVI-VGA adapter. Neither has worked. The monitor says it is not receiving signal from the computer. I have changed the input settings on the monitor between analog and digital, but can't get anything to work, the monitor just goes into sleep mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That monitor has a resolution setting of 1600 x 900. Back in 2004, that wasn't a format in use, so your older G5 may not be outputting the right resolution.
Do you have a second monitor you can use so that both the Dell and the second monitor can be attached at the same time? That could make troubleshooting easier.

The Thunderbolt to DVI adapter does not discrimate what monitor is connected to it via DVI.
So yes, you can connect your Dell monitor to your MBA using the adapter.

A mini display port cable to either HDMI, VGA or DVI would be fine. The best way to to purchase is to buy it directly from Apple that way you know you are getting a high quality cable that has been well tested.
BTW, your manual says:
One or two Thunderbolt ports (high-speed data, video, and audio)
Connect Thunderbolt-compatible devices for high-speed data transfer, or connectan external display that uses Mini DisplayPort. You can purchase adapters to connectdisplays that use DVI, HDMI, or VGA. The 21.5-inch iMac has one Thunderbolt portand 27-inch iMacs have two.

MBP to dual dell monitors

Perhaps you can help me. I have a 2012 13" MBP (Last non-retina model) that I would like to connect two dell monitors 1708fp with. Is that a possibility?
More Specifically,
Can I go TB to double (DVI-D or VGA) or USB to double (DVI-D or VGA) and have it look okay? It would be for an extended screen just when I get home with my laptop. Fun to plug in and utilize two brand new monitors I was given for free. It looks like there is adapotr type boxes out there that I can go in with TB then out with two DVI's... is that necessary or even work.

one big difference between something like that and something like the Matrox piece: the Matrox piece makes your two monitors appear to be one big monitor and not two different ones... that could be good and it could be bad

Hi, I have a Dell E228WFP 24 inch monitor and I have connected it to my MacBook Pro (October 2013, Non-retina, 13 inch) with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, and another adapter off eBay, which plugs into the VGA cable that is in the back of the Dell monitor. When I turn the monitor on, the screen remians black, then the monitor goes into power save mode. The Mac can find the monitor, and the Mac says the monitor is working perfectly.
The monitor goes into power save no matter if I put it on Auto Detect or Digital imput, or Analog input.
Please help!

Searching on Amazon, I find the monitor has HDMI. a Mini-Displayport to HDMI adapter from the Apple Store is a much better choice than any VGA adapter. Also your machine will support audio over HDMI if there is audio on the monitor. If not, that's immaterial for that monitor:

Anyway, HDMI carries the full digital signal. So does DVI. I for one prefer HDMI since it is less likely to fail connecting.

G5 DVI to VGA Dell Monitor Connection problems, need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm running two dell monitors both of which were connected via DVI to my g5 quad dual dvi. My tv broke and I'm using one of my monitors to connect the cable boxes HDMI input to the dells DVI input, it works great.
My problem is that i still want to run two monitors from my mac and still be able to switch channel sources from the Dells source button allowing me to switch from TV to Mac. Since I took up the dvi port on one of my monitors to connect to the cable box via HDMI, I have a free DVI cable. I purchased a tiny converter that allowed to change one end of the free DVI cable to VGA. I used this method to connect the cable to my g5's dvi port and the configured end to the VGA port on the monitor with no luck.
The Dell monitor does not pick up any signal and just goes to sleep as if my computer does not exist. The TV works fine and I'm able to switch sources. Please note that I'm not using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with my g5 and don't know if this would make a difference. If it does, how do i set this up because this adaptor is like 5 inches long.
Does the adaptors DVI end need to be connected to the back of the g5 or does the VGA end need to be connected to the monitor or does it not matter. I need a longer dvi-vga cable as well, do they make them. This all depends if the problem actually is that that I'm not using the DVI-VGA cable that came with my mac to connect to the monitor in the first place.
Can anyone help me out here. I'm using the Dell 2208WFP Ultra Sharp.

Hello - is it possible to connect (add) my Dell monitor to my iMac (core7)? I have a mini VGA adatper, but it will only fit into the Thunderbolt port.
Do I need to purchase a specific Thunderbolt cable?

That should still work. You only need a Thunderbolt cable for hooking to Thunderbolt capable devices, I think.
