No connection with VNC inside my own GUEST wifi network

I have an iMac running 10.6. I have a laptop running 10.4. I want to use screen sharing to control the iMac from the laptop, within the LAN connected by an Airport Extreme.  I set up screen sharing on the iMac, but ChickenOfTheVNC client on the laptop can't connect to that IP. Now, they're both on the GUEST network of the Airport - could that be the problem - is it impossible to use VNC on the guest network?  Any way to allow it, on the Airport settings etc.?

The Guest Network will only allow wireless devices to connect, so if you plan to connect a device to the Guest Network using an Ethernet connection, that will not work.
Wireless devices that are connected to the Guest Network can "see" and communicate with each other, but you must enable that option in AirPort Utility.
If the laptop that is running the VNC server is connected to the "main" network, that cannot work since the server will not be able to connect to other clients on the Guest Network. The laptop running the server would need to be on the Guest Network as well.

  • Problems to connect with VNC to headless mac mini after sleep mode

    Hallo,
I've a Mac Mini (late 2009) setup with Lion Server. I want to use it without mouse/keyboard/monitor attached. Since I want to safe power ( green IT ;-) ), I would like to use sleep mode.
First thing I've learned is, that Lion Server prevents the mini to go to sleep after an idel time as set in power saving.
The only thing that works, is setting up a shedule with sleep / wakeup times.
When I start the mini, everything works great. I can connect via VNC. The Mini goes to sleep at the scheduled time and wakes up again as expected.
From this time on, things begin to get strange:
I can connect using VNC, but all i get is a grey screen with a moving cursor. So VNC is working, but there is no screen available on the Mini. Same if I use thightVNC from a Windwos PC. Get a grey screen.
Further the system does NOT go to sleep at scheduled times any longer.
I was able to track down the problem to the missing monitor: If the Mini wakes up without a monitor connected, I seems to wait to get the right resolution or what ever. All servives are working, SSH is fine even VNC works, but shows only a grey screen.
I've been playing with attaching / detaching a monitor. Sometimes I got:
    - Boot with monitor
    - connect with VNC, see login screen
    - send Mini to sleep
    - disconnect monitor
    - wakeup Mini
    - VNC reconnects, showing grey screen
    - plug in monitor and wait until login screen appears on the monitor
    - VNC switches from grey to login screen
The only way I can save some energy is a sheduled shutdown / restart. So headless works, but not after waking up from sleep.
Any hint or solutions for this ?
    Thanks
    Marc

  • How to set up guest wifi network on 1200 series APs with disclaimer web portal?

I've been thinking about this one for awhile. I want to set up a guest wifi network without any security (AES / TKIP) that allows guests to connect. Ideally, their web browser would be redirected to a web portal containing legal disclaimers, and they would need to accept the terms and conditions to use the guest wifi. I would also like to have them be required to visit the web portal again every 8 hours after that to accept the terms and conditions again.
I have a Cisco 1240AG access point already. What else do I need to make this work?

I don't believe you can do this just with an AP running in autonomous mode you would need to have a WLC to configure the splash page.
    Have a look here:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-0/configuration/guide/c70/c70users.html#wp1049273
Alternatively you can use software running on a PC/Server. Something like http://www.antamedia.com/hotspot/
    Hope that helps!

  • How would I contain guest Wifi network in firewall?

I would like to implement a guest wifi network on my preexisting private network and can't figure out the security on my firewall. Currently the link connecting my private network to the internet is functioning fine and I really don't want to change this link into a trunk as I believe trying to reconfigure the trunk and security lists in the firewall would cause downtime. I would like to use a second interface on the firewall (5520 ASA with 8.2 software) as a trunk interface for my guest network and any other new VLAN in the future. My main concern is at the Core of my network the default gateway is the private IP for my internal firewall connection. If the guest network is connected to my core device going to the ASA, how do I specify a second default gateway on the core for the guest network on the ASA?
After writing this I realized, what if i connected a switch directly to the second trunk interface on my ASA and then used this IP as the default gateway for the guest network? I believe this should work but this leads me to one more question:
Say I wanted to allow my quest network access to a specific server on my internal network, would a proper configuration be to setup the ACLs on the firewall, allowing them to communicate to my inside network?

    Hi,
Yeah I suppose changing the existing interface to a Trunk would not be possible without somekind of downtime unless you used an untypical configuration.
Sadly, my personal knowledge of wireless networks and the devices is almost nonexistent as we have different people to handle setting up those.
But I would imagine you can use a separate Vlan for the Guest Wifi and bring that Vlan to the new ASA interface only. If your actual core switch is doing routing, in other words if its acting as a L3 switch then you should probably add the Guest Wifi Vlan only as L2 to the core switch and configure it all the way to the new ASA Trunk. Default gateway as you say would be the IP address configured on the ASA itself.
Controlling the traffic from the new interface on the ASA should be pretty simple.
access-list GUEST-WIFI remark Allow traffic to internal server
access-list GUEST-WIFI permit tcp host eq
access-list GUEST-WIFI remark Deny All traffic to Internal networks
    access-list GUEST-WIFI deny ip any
access-list GUEST-WIFI remark Allow All other traffic
    access-list GUEST-WIFI permit ip any
    access-group GUEST-WIFI in interface
The above ACL first allows some traffic to a certain internal server with a certain service. It then blocks all other traffic to the internal network. Finally it allows all other traffic. That would be all traffic destined to external public networks.
Naturally you would need possibly Static Identity NAT configurations (since you are using 8.2 software) to enable connections from the Guest Wifi to Internal network.

  • HT4259 i connected two airport extremes by extending a wifi network.  wifi seems weak...help

i connected two airport extremes by extending a wifi network.  all my lights are green, and airport utility confirms connections are excellent.  but the extended base station hasn't improved my wifi range in the area i set it up in.

If you have a Mac laptop handy, run the test that I have outlined below to find out if the remote AirPort Extreme is really extending the signal at all.
Here, I assume that both of your AirPort Extremes are the newer "square" versions....not the older "round" version.
Locate your Mac laptop close to the "main" AirPort Extreme
Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Look for the BSSID and jot down the last few characters
The BSSID is the AirPort ID of the AirPort Extreme
Now, move the laptop close the "remote" AirPort Extreme and perform the same test
If you see the same BSSID as the "main" AirPort Extreme, your Mac is picking up from the main AirPort...and the remote AirPort is not configured correctly to extend.
If you see a different BSSID near the remote AirPort, that indicates that the Mac is picking up a signal from the remote AirPort....which is exending the signal correctly.

We are on holiday in Mexico. Our iPad2 has no problem connecting to the Internet through our hotel's subscription WiFi network. But, both of our macbookpros can not with the same password. What can we try?
We can join the network, but can not access the Internet. The password is correct. We have tried network assistant and diagnostics, restarting the laptops, re-joining the network. Our iPhone 4s also works all the time.
Same location. Signal strength is good.

Since I couldn't figure out a way to edit our original post, here's another potential clue.
Our laptops, when in System Preferences>Network, say "WiFi has the self-assigned IP address of XXXXXXXXX and will not be able to connect to the Internet".
Strangely, my six year old MBP running OS 10.6.8 accessed the Internet straight away, just by opening Safari to my home page. My wife's six month old MBP running OS 10.7.2 could not.

  • How to connect your Verizon 4510L to your home Wifi Network

    Hello there!
I recently set my mom up with one of these guys and ran into the problem of having more than 5 devices that need to connect to the Internet and/or each other.  I couldn't find any resources online that described how this can be done, or even if it is allowed.  So I figured I would finally contribute to the Online community and share my success with all of you!  As a disclaimer:  I am not Verizon/Linksys/etc technical support and provide the following information freely and without warranty. The instructions below are specific to my configuration, and while yours WILL work using the same general principles, the exact steps required to make it work may be different.  In other words, YMMV   Good Luck!
First off, my environment doesn't equal your environment, and what I will describe below is one of the more complex scenarios.  You can disregard any extra routers if you only use 1.  Here is the environment I had to work with:
A large 2 story home with a basement area as well.  The wifi signal does not travel well from floor to floor, so we had to have 1 wireless router per floor.  We DID have the luxury of using home wiring to to phsycally connect both routers together, if you don't have that luxury, I might suggest using a "Powerline" adapter to help wire your two routers together.  Some devices required wired connectivity on both floors as well, so wireless repeaters would not be sufficient.  We purchased 2 routers to accomplish the following task.  Brand of router should not matter.  If your home is a 1 story, or have adequate coverage from a single router, you can disregard the 2nd (SLAVE) router instructions (4-5) below.
First off, what you will need to make this work:
One or more Wireless Routers (we used Linksys Wireless-G or Wireless-N 4-port routers)
*EDIT: You need only 1 router, and if an additional access point is needed, purchase an Access Point or repeater with wired/wireless capabilities*
    Verizon JetPack 4510L MiFI device
One Wireless Bridge (we used Linksys WET610 1-port Entertainment Bridge)
Next, lets setup the wireless/wired home network to connect all devices with one another:
    1) Choose one router to be the MASTER, and the other to simply be your SLAVE/repeater for the other floor.
    2) Before physically connecting the MASTER and SLAVE routers together perform the following:
    3) On the MASTER router:
         - Change the router IP address to 192.168.10.1
              - The 10 is random, and you can make it whatever you want (as long as it isn't "1"), just remember it and keep it consistent.
         - Configure DHCP (usually on by default) but change the subnet from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.10.x.
              - The reason for changing the DHCP subnet is because your 4510L device uses DHCP as well, and it is configured to use 192.168.1.x
                   - They can't be the same or it won't work
         - Configure your wireless SSID and security (preferably WPA2)
    4) On the SLAVE router *EDIT: or repeater or access point*:
         - Change the router IP address something outside the DHCP range 1-100, but on the same subnet as the master router (ie. 192.168.10.101)
         - Disable DHCP on the router, as all address assignment is going to come from the MASTER
              - You may want to tape over the WAN port as well to remind yourself that it will not be used
         - Configure your wireless SSID and security to match that of the MASTER router
              - This will make it easier for your clients to use both access points and move throughout your home without having an issue
    5) Connect both routers together with Ethernet (either direct cable, home ethernet wiring, powerline adapter, etc)
         - You want to connect both routers using one of the built in network ports (1-4)
There, now you have both floors of your home setup to accept either wired or wireless clients who will be assigned 192.168.10.x IP addresses.  However, they will not have access to the Internet...yet!
The MiFi device by default has a long SSID, and the password to connect is on a label on the bottom of it.  Power it on in the room next to a computer (probably a windows computer), and view your wireless networks to connect to from the desktop.  You will probably see the wireless network name you just created on the routers and the "Verizon ..." MiFi name.  Simply make a note of the EXACT SSID being broadcasted by the MiFi device.  If you changed the default WiFi password before attempting this, make a note of that new password as well.
Next, lets use the key to making this thing work...the Wireless Bridge.  The wireless bridge first needs to be physically connected to either router on ports 1-4.  The bridge will get an IP address assigned to it and you will need to find that address out so that you can access it from a web browser.  The easiest way to find that out is to connect to the MASTER routers web-based administration page (http://192.168.10.1), click on Status menu->Local network, and then click the "DHCP client table" button.  You will find the bridge name and IP address there.  Keep that administration window open.
Next, connect your web browser with the bridges IP address so that you can manually configure it to access the MiFi device.  The bridge will ask if you want auto or manual configuration, and you want manual.  When prompted for the SSID and security type, type in the SSID of the MiFi device EXACTLY as you wrote it down.  Next, under security, change the type to WPA2-Personal, and type in the password to access the Verizon MiFi device (either on the sticker under it, or whatever you previously changed it to).  Once you complete that setup, the status page should tell you that the bridge is connected and have an IP address (192.168.1.x) assigned to it.  Once that is done, you can close your web browser to the wireless bridge.
Disconnect the bridge from the routers network ports and now connect it to the MASTER routers WAN port.
Next, return to the MASTER routers web-based administration page (http://192.168.10.1), click on the Status menu and view the WAN IP information.  If everything was connected correctly:
MiFi wirelessly -> Wireless Bridge wired -> Master router WAN port (then optionally wired from port 1) -> Slave router port 1
Then, you should see the WAN IP address of 192.168.1.x assigned to your MASTER router.
If you do see that, then congratulations, open a web browser from any of your wired/wireless clients connected to your home network, and you should be able to access the Internet!  You will be able to support as many clients as your Routers will allow you to directly connect (104 if I am not mistaken)...Yay!
I hope my experience helps you all in achieving the same results!
    Troubleshooting:
If you do not see a WAN IP address, you might want to power off the MASTER router, the Wireless Bridge and MiFi device.  Then in the following order power up each one, one at a time, giving the unit time to fully configure and connect to their respective networks:  First MiFi, then the Bridge, then the MASTER router.
After the Master router is fully powered on, test a webpage again from any client connected to your new home network and it should work.
If it _still_ doesn't work, I would recheck the steps listed above to see if anything was missed.  Particularly, making sure you changed the router IP and DHCP subnet of the MASTER router to something other than 192.168.1.x.
    Good Luck!

Q: "In your example of using the wireless repeater, assuming it is on a different floor than the main router, how are the clients connecting to the network on that floor?"
A: However you like, both devices support thier own cabled and wireless connections.
I assume you are only interested in wireless client connections since cable connections are straight forward.  Depending on how you setup the SSID's clients will connect to either the router or the repeater and they should be overlapping eachother a little.
    Same SSID:
If the router and repeater share the same SSID then the client will decide on thier own which one to connect to.  The client will roam between the two on its own criteria as the user moves around the enviornment.  Roaming and transitioning will happen seamlessly for you and you should not notice a break in your connection unless you have something really specific connected to the internet.  In most cases you cannot influence this behavior on your devices as they all have thier own criteria for choosing one SSID over another with a similar name.
    Different SSID:
If the SSID's are different then the user must manually connect to one network or the other.  Roaming will not be seamless and as the user walks out of range the client will be disconnected from the device.  This provides the best reliability and control but requires more user intervention.
Q:"So correct me if I am wrong, but in your setup, there would be 2 wifi network, and the soft limitation of 4 devices on the repeater floor.
    A. Nope, the repeater will support as many devices as it can, depending on the model you purchase.  Even though the repeater needs a wireless connection with the MiFi, the Repeater rebroadcasts and acts as its own independant wireless router.  The MiFi could care lesss how many people are connected to the Repeater, all it see's is one connection.  If you removed the MiFi from the repeater then the repeater will continue to broadcast its own SSID.  Clients connected to the repeater will not be disconnected from the repeater SSID but they would not recieve internet until the MiFi returns.
With the repeater enviornment you could have 10 people on the repeater, 10 people on the wireless router and 4 people directly conneted to the MiFi all at the same time.  I dont suggest it running like that for performance reasons but hopefully you get the idea.

  • I'd like to create my own private WiFi network from a public WiFi network

I am often in locations where there are open WiFi networks and I'd like to use an Express to create a private WiFi network from the available public one.?
If the express can't do it on it's own can I add another router to make it work? I have ethernet connected PC's and NAS devices I want to use. Thanks
    Regards,
    Dan

If you need ethernet connections for your "private" network, an AirPort Extreme (or virtually any other router with ethernet capability for that matter) would work.
So, an AirPort Express to "receive" the public wireless signal and provide an ethernet signal to the second router which could be configured to provide both ethernet and wireless connections. Just be sure to setup the AirPort Extreme to "share a public IP address". You'll get a Double NAT message, but you can click to ignore this.

  • Airport Express disconnects wired internet connection when attempting to extend Airport Extreme WiFi network

I just purchased and airport express to extend my wifi network.  My base station is an airport extreme, I have one wired connection and a wifi network.  When I go through the recommended steps to set up the express and "extend the network", the airport extreme will no longer connect to the internet via ethernet.  I have tried various settings and can't seem to resolve the problem.  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

  • Just connected a Linksys plw400 extender to my wifi network & IPad 2 looses Wifi connection

Just connected a linksys plw400 to my wifi network and now my ipad2 can see the network but cannot connect.  When I disconnect the linksys plw400 my IPad2 will connect albeit a weak signal which is why I bought the extender which works fine with my Dell laptop and Galaxy S3 can anyone help me with this issue?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Unable to connect with Windows 7 laptop on home wireless network

When I initially set up my network, both computers were able to see each other. I could access the Mac's files on the Windows 7 PC, but not vice versa. The Mac required a user name and password when I clicked on the PC's icon in Finder, but wouldn't recognize anything I'd type in.
I tried duplicating the Mac network location and entering "WORKGROUP" under the WINS tab. This caused the Mac to lose sight of the PC altogether, and still can't see it when I switched back to the original location. The PC can still see the Mac.

I'm not sure if this help. I have a Macbook Pro with Magic Mouse in Window 7.
What I did was when you click on the Bluetooth >> Add a Device, the Magic Mouse will show in the pop up window.
Do not click "Next", instead right click on the Mouse and select "Properties".
Under "Services" tab, checked "Drivers for keyboard, mice etc (HID). Then click "Apply". Driver will be installed once is done click "OK"
Then click "Cancel" on the Add a device windows. The magic mouse should be connected now and shown in the Bluetooth Device list.
Hope this help, at least it does works for me. Cheers
