No Contact Name On New SMS

I never noticed till I seen another post about not being able to see who sent me a sms text.  I have looked in the other options from the previous post but my 8530 does not apear to have those settings any other ideas?  Carrier is Us Cellular if that helps.
Don't forget to check your cinch!

In order to see the name of who is sending you an sms message instead of just the number you need to have that person and their number saved in your address book.

  • N95-2 doesn't display contact name in imported SMS...

    Hi all,
I just imported all my SMSes from my old 6230 to my N95-2. I did it via Nokia Content Copier v3 (supplied with the N95). Backed up the 6230 and restored it to the N95 (contacts, calendars and messages only). To my surprise, the N95 doesn't display the contact name in the imported SMSes while the numbers are also saved in Contacts.
How can I solve this? Does anybody else have any experience in transferring SMSes from their old phone to N95? My old messages, contacts etc are still saved in 6230 just in case I need to redo the whole process again.
    Thanks in advance!

the problem lies with your copying of the contacts
When you copied them over you may have added duplicates, if there is a duplicate in the contacts of a number the phone will not display a name as it will be confused.
You will need to go through the contacts and delete any that have duplicate numbers.
    This should solve your issue

  • IPhone shows all contact numbers in new sms

When I create a new message and select the recipient from my contacts, my iPhone lists landline numbers that I would never send a message to. I want it to show the recipient's mobile number first. Can this be done? I think I am correct in saying that the numbers are shown in the order that they have been entered against the contact. So if I create a new contact and add a home number, office number and the their mobile number, then when i create a sms to that user, the home and office numbers are offered first and i have to scroll down select the mobile number.

Thats quite an undertaking. For existing contacts I would have delete all the entries which are above the mobile number and then re-enter them underneath.

  • Which contact name appears for SMS?

In my address book I have a contact called "ICE (Emergency Contact)" which includes the phone numbers of the people closest to me in case I'm in an accident and someone else has my iPhone. All of the people included in "ICE" also have their own separate entries in address book.
Unfortunately, whenever I receive an SMS or call from anyone in "ICE", the phone reports them as "ICE", instead of finding their separate personal entry in address book.
Is there any way I can control how the phone indexes the calling/smsing number into my contact list so I can see who's calling?

Perhaps you could try an ICE application for the phone, like one of these:

  • SMS and MMS cannot display contact name (E51)

I try to restore a backup file, from my old 3230 and 6670, via Nokia PC Suite into my newly bought E51, everything work just fine.
But I noticed that the sender of SMS and MMS in E51 [inbox] only display in number(e.g. '+601********'), instead of sender name as in [contacts](e.g. 'Michael'). Even I select the text message, choose [options] > [Add to Contacts] > [Create New]/[Update existing], it won't work, neither with the country code (+601*******) or without (01********). (note: I'm very sure that phone number is not duplicated in the contact).
Somehow, a good news is, any sms or mms received from the network provider can display the sender name according to [contacts], and it store as it even after I deleted the saved item in [contact] or rename the entry. Ha ha, a bit complicated compare to the S60v2 phone...
    Anyone have idea on this?

I have a similar problem. Would be grateful for some much needed help, please...
    Hi there,
my E66 has the exact same problem. IN addition when in coming calls come in, they don't show the contact name. It only shows the number. I think it may hae to do with new contacts added after contacts from your old phone were added. I also notice that my old contacts transferred to the phone doesn't have the extra menu 'syncronisation'.

  • Lost my Contact Names and Months of New Entries w/ iOS 4 Update--Any Help?

    Hi,
I updated to iOS4 yesterday and after it was done all my contact names were gone. The numbers were all in there, just no names. I don't use Mobile Me for my contacts.
Checking my iPhone sync settings on my Mac for some reason "sync contacts" with Address Book was no longer checked in iTunes. It looks like it was that way for some time, which is unusual as that's the method I use to backup my contacts. No idea how that got switched, as I wouldn't have changed that. Don't think MobileMe troubleshooting had me turn it off after a Calendar duplication issue. Wouldn't make sense.
Also, I don't know why the update to a new OS would make me LOSE ALL my contact names. Why would the update be designed that way and not retain everything?
Now my computer has an old contact list and I've lost months of new contacts, phone numbers, emails and contact organization. Pretty bummed. Not sure why that box wasn't checked and the phone backup system is absolutely no help at all as, by design, iTunes only saves ONE backup of your phone at a time, and after the operating system updates to iOS4, it immediately and automatically backs up the phone with the new settings, writing over the real backup with the data you might want to return to.
Restored it from backup today to see if it'd repopulate the names, but no, it went to the backup it took AFTER the iOS4 update. It even erased the new spelling of someone's name that I put into the phone last night!
Why is this upgrade process designed without more safeties in mind, Apple? Not sure how that happened but clearly grandmothers and others might have a snafu and need to go back to an earlier backup. Can't iTunes backup the last 3 or 5 versions, or just note the differences so getting back lost data is easier? Happened a few years back, an iPhone I was using that went bad, but iTunes backed up the corrupted information in its single backup so that the last few weeks of entries, etc., got lost. Any way to get wireless syncing of the phone in the future like with Time Capsule or something, indexing at least a few multiple backups by date or something?
Clearly all the names were on the phone in their entirety immediately before the update, but then poof! Anything I can do about it now? Any ideas, folks?
    Thanks.

Try a hard reset right now and see if they disappear.
Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for 10 seconds until you see white Apple logo on the screen. Wait for the phone to restart and see if the contacts are fixed.

  • Brand new 5s- sometimes phone numbers display when receiving calls and texts instead of contact name.

Brand new 5s- sometimes phone numbers display when receiving calls and texts instead of contact name. Hard to know who is calling/texting! A few times I've tapped on the text message icon and I can actually watch as the conversations turn from showing just numbers to the contact names. Same thing when looking at call history and voice mail- sometimes it shows numbers and then I'll go back and the contacts will be back. So frustrating!

You don't dial *228 to update the Preferred Roaming List on 4G phones; I"m surprised the call went through.  The PRL updates are handled by the SIM card.
Try this and see if it helps:  turn off the phone, remove the SIM card, and wait a few minutes.  Then re-insert the SIM card, turn the phone back on, and give the phone a few minutes to re-establish a network connection.

  • Phone number, not contact name, appears for new iMessage notification

I am currently in Israel and using an Israeli SIM card with my iPhone 5C. I have unlimited data so I was told I was able to use iMessage. I am having an issue when talking to just one person. When I receive the banner or lock screen notification that I have a new message from him it just displays the phone number (area code and seven digits, no 1 or +1 or anything). Then when I swipe or tap to view the message it automatically brings me to a new message screen "To" his phone number (also the phone number is showing up green even though it is an iPhone). When I cancel the new message and am then in my Message app and viewing all my conversations, the new message is there under his contact name that is saved in my phone... And messages are blue etc. in our conversation. His number is saved with a +1 in my contacts as I am abroad and the contact name was appearing in my Messages. When I removed the +1 from his contact the phone is not recognizing him in my messages and just shows up as the number. This is very very frustrating. Please help! Thank you.

this issue corrected itself 2 days later, the power of prayer!

You can contact iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Now that I have downloaded the new software, the contact name disappears and just the number shows up on my text.

Now that I have downloaded the new software for my iphone, the contact name of the person who is texting me disappears and only the phone number is there. This only happens if the person texting is using an iphone.
    Any solutions?

You just need to restore your phone and if you can then you must get an iphone 5s. Its the best iphone ever. I advise you stay away from droids if you have used an apple device. Well like many people you can also keep two phones one apple and one droid.

  • SMS does not show contact name

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 4. I recently switched to using exchange as my contact list so I can have all my contacts (business and private) at the same place.
My problem is that the contact names do not always show up on text messages. A few contacts work but there is no visible difference in the ones that work and those that don't. Also I have added the country code to the phone number and that does not solve the problem either. I have tried deleting the contacts and recreating them. I have tried to delete all the history of a given number and start the sms conversation again picking the name from the adress book - right after the message was sent it switched the name to the number.
Also I have tried restarting the phone and resynced it to iTunes.
Can anyone help me? This is really not possible to live with.

    1) Open the Phone and dial *228. This is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.
    2) When the system answer press 1 for "Program or activate your phone"
    3) Wait for the call to disconnect. You should get a prompt stating something like, "Settings updated."
    4) Open the Task Manager and kill the Phone, Message, and Contacts Applications
    5) Wait a few minutes (I waited 3 just to be extra safe)
    6) Open the Message App to verify the fix

Although clunky as you say, this sounds like a reasonably efficient way to accomplish what I was seeking.
Address Book has no global find/replace. Bob Grove suggested one possible workaround; however, a grep-capable text editor (eg, TextWrangler) is better than TextEdit if complex strings are involved.
An alternative is Bento (which is designed specifically to interact with the AB database), but it's not free.

  • Question: When I want to send SMS and click on the contact, the contact came out with names and numbers, as if the whole contacts are there in the phone. When I open the contact, I can only see 3 contact names and the rest of 4000  contacts are not listed

Question: When I want to send SMS and click on the contact, the contact came out with names and numbers, as if the whole contacts are there in the phone. However, when I open the contact, I can only see 3 contact names and the rest of 4000 plus contacts are not listed, and it makes you difficult to call through contact

The iPhone remembers information about previous contacts.
Complelely independently, you have a Contacts app with a contacts list.  It sounds like your contacts list has 3 names on it.  You need to add a few names.

  • Why is contact name now appearing with New Text Message notification?

How do I get the contact name to not appear when I'm notified I have a new text? It used to just say something like "New Text Message." This is happening when my phone is locked.

This was part of the new 2.2 update. There is no setting to turn this off.
