No contacts in Address Panel

Hi. Every now and again no contacts appear in my Address Panel. Nothing has changed as far as I know i.e. no iCal server changes and I'm not doing anything different on the iCal client. No pattern that I can see as to why this happens. Anyone got any ideas?

Do this, open your Address Book > Menu > choose Filters and UNcheck all filters.
See your contacts now?

  • Contacts not appearing in the Mail address panel

If I am in Mail on my MacBook the mail program knows nothing about any addresses in my contact list.
The Address Panel and Previous Contacts lists are empty.
If I open my contacts list - I see all my contacts properly.
They also sync properly between my phone and macbook.  I can add a contact to my pone and a second or two later it appears on my MB; and I can add a contact to my MB and seconds later it appears on my phone.
Here is when I believe the problem started.
I wanted all my mail and contacts to be in my 'documents' folder so I could sync that folder, and only that folder, between multiple places and machines and also backup everything in one fell swoop.
    a) I moved the mail and the application support/addressbook folders from my library to my docs folder.
    b) In the terminal created hard links in the original places pointing to the new.  I was careful to make hard links not soft.
From the finder and from the terminal the links are all working fine works fine.  And as I mentioned the sync function to my phone finds the moved files and works great.  Mail work fine. I can create new accounts etc so mail preferences work fine. I also did this with my messages and dropbox and they are working fine.
    If I  reveal   ' ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr'
It is in         '  /Users/MyUserFolder/Documents/$ AddressBook'
    If I  reveal   ' ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail'
    It is in         ' /Users/MyUserFolder/Library/Containers'
So everything looks good.  But obviously it isn't.  I am missing moving a file somewhere, or possibly a pref file needs edited.
Gosh, I sure hope Apple didn't hardcode a lowlevel address into the mail program somehow.  That would have been shortsighted and against unix principles that want everything to be accessible through the file system - but it wouldn't be the 1st time they changed something inside unix.
I found the discussion, Re: Why can't Mail access email addresses from Contacts? and looked at that.
I did not see anything that looked like it would help me since it seemed he could see the contacts in his address panel it just wouldn't auto search them. I thought about trying the two things Linc Davis mentioned but he cautioned against changing any of the contents of the sandbox.  The last time I was deep into the OS was before it had a sandbox so I am not familiar with it and am not sure what would or would not affect the sandbox; so I hesitate to try until I understand that.
    I am running 10.8.2 build 12C60 and Mail 6.2 (1499)  on a MB Pro 15" Early'08  2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
So they is something about Mary Mail.  Anyone have any ideas for me?
Could Mail have a relative address or very low level address to the addressbook built into it?

    More Info:
    If I  reveal   ' ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr'
It is in         '  /Users/MyUserFolder/Documents/$ AddressBook'
    If I  reveal   ' ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail'
    It is in         ' /Users/MyUserFolder/Library/Containers'

  • Unable to send mail to importet contacts via address book

    Hi all,
I've searched the web without finding a solution to my issue with one of my users, so I had to create my own thread.
My issue is that one of my newly employed users importet a large amount of contacts (over 3000) from his previous workplace (which worked after a little trouble via manually importing a .pst file), but when he tries to add contacts to a mail via address
book and send the mail, he receives a mail back with "the following recipient(s) cannot be reached"
I can resolve the issue by copying the mail address, under the contacts profile, and pasting it in the "Email" field, basically retyping the same mail. The mail will then go through without any return mail stating the above error. I could do the
same for all 3000 contacts, BUT that is a lot of time needed, which I would really like to avoid.
We are running Exchange 2010 and Office 2013.
I'm hoping for a fix from one of the clever minds in here!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Does the issue happen when sending mails to all these 3000 contacts? Please send test message by adding other contacts to a mail via Contacts in Address Book to check whether the issue can be reproduced.
Please make sure the latest patches and service packs are installed for your Outlook 2013. Additionally, please try the following test to narrow down the issue:
    1. Please switch to People panel in Outlook, click a imported contact, click Email in HOME tab. Then send a message to check whether this message can be sent successfully.
    2. Please open the Contact PST file in Outlook instead of import PST file. Then do step 1 to send test message and check whether the issue persists.
If the issue doesn’t happen when sending message to contacts in opened PST file, it indicates the Contacts which is saved in the PST file should be correct. The issue may be related to Contact resolved in Outlook client. Please create a new Outlook contact
or create a new Outlook profile to have a try.

  • Mail Address Panel

I have just installed OS X Yosemite and when in Mail, I can't find the Address Panel which I used to use with OS X Mavericks to select multiple addressees for an e-mail. As it stands now, I can only add addressees one at a time from contacts or Previous Recipients List, which is very time consuming. If I want to send out an email to say 20 recipients, how do I select them as I previously could by using Mail > Window > Address Panel and then select all the addressees that I wanted and then add them to my email with one click of the mouse?

Sometimes, she cannot think of the names of the people she would like to send an e-mail (if it's one going to lots of people) so she always used the Address Panel as a way of kick-starting her brain as to who should receive the e-mail.
I guess she could always go through the alphabet from A to Z.
Just open contacts app next to the message window. You can even drag the contacts from the Contacts app into the Address line.

  • Address Panel in Mail.app empty but Address Book app full

I recently updated to Mountain Lion. I have a mid-2011 iMac i7. I can't honestly say that it stopped working with the advent of Mountain Lion but it is the most recent change.
When I type a name in the Mail.app new email "To" field it will not read my contacts. The processing lined circle spins over on the right but never does anything. I looked in my contacts app and everything is fine. If I go into the mail.app and go to window->address panel it is empty. I am not using iCloud for contacts on any of my devices.
I tried searching a contact name from spotlight and it shows up under contacts... but hey, like i said, all my contacts are available in the contacts app.

Thunderbird does not have this problem, nor does Postbox. Both are now listed under security settings as having address book access. Mail.app is not listed as having access and there's not an option to add it.

  • Mobileme Address Panel

When I change an email address in contacts both the old and new address are pulled up when I address an email to this contact.  When I go to Mobileme, Window, Address Panel I can see both the old and new email address, but can not figure out how to delete the old contact.

The multiple addresses show up on the iPhone, iPad and laptop.  I was just thinking it might be easier to delete old on the laptop, mobileme control panel, but assume if there is a way to delete them on the iPhone, it will sync to all three devices.

  • Address Panel

I have a question about the address panel in iCal. I believe it is supposed to take contacts from your address book and put them in the address panel within iCal, however whenever I open the address panel, it is completely blank and there is no where I see to add anything.
What's up with this? I'm trying to figure out how to send calendar invitations to people and I believe that could be the culprit. Even if it's not, I still would like to know what the heck it does or is supposed to do.
    Thanks!
BTW, I am using MobileMe to sync my contacts. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Thanks in advance for the help!!

    Eric,
If you go into iCal, then Window > Address Panel or CommandOptionA brings it up.
There is always something I miss, or never noticed.
Maybe it's supposed to be blank. EIther way, I have no idea what the point of it is. Is yours blank?
No, mine displays my Address Book entries.
It should not be blank. When I drag one of the entries to iCal it creates an event named "Meeting with..." (Name of contact).
...I think that might be the reason I can't invite attendees.
Perhaps refreshing the iCal plist file may return the function. You will find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Quit iCal, drag the com.apple.iCal.plist file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart.
And yes, to upgrade the new MobileMe you go into the calendar section on MobileMe =).
I am waiting to upgrade when IOS 4.2 is released for the iPad.

  • ICal and CalDAV issues: Address Panel - Open Directory Lookup? & others.

    An overview of my setup:
I'm using Google Calendar through CalDAV (set up with Calaboration), and have no problems synchronizing events. These are dealing with attendees.
Several parts to this one, so to start:
    1) It appears that, likely with any CalDAV calendar, my Address Panel becomes an "Open Directory Lookup" instead of searching my trusty Address Book contacts, which I would prefer. I also cannot type in names/email addresses and have them auto-complete, which I assume is now searching the empty Open Directory.
Is there a way I can force this to still use my Address Book? Or does anyone know a way to hook my Google contacts (in Gmail) into a directory search that will come up in the new panel?
    2) When people add me as a "guest" in Google Calendar (== attendee in iCal), I see it in my calendar on iCal. I see myself in the list, with my name and email address... but I cannot RSVP. Google recommends that I add my Gmail account hooked to my Calendar to my "me" card in Address Book, which I have done, but it still does not recognize, well, Me.
I'm stumped. Is there something I'm missing? Something else I need to do in iCal?

    Thanks for the answer.
I guess because I was deleting the 'local' calendar with some of my test accounts and not others I would sometimes get the local Address Book panel by default and sometimes the Open Directory panel.
    I agree it's pretty confusing.

  • Crippled functionality in iCal 4 using Address Panel

I am reviving this thread from one year ago as it never was resolved to my satisfaction. Original post below.
I upgraded our 10.5 iCal Server to a Snow Leopard server about 6 weeks ago. At that time I also began upgrading users to 10.6 from 10.5. The address panel of iCal functioned properly with 10.5 clients before and after the server upgrade. However the 10.6 clients see nothing in the Address Panel of iCal until they begin entering a name, email address, etc.
If I use the iCal Server utility on my machine I can see resources and conference rooms (locations) that have been setup so I know the information is there and being served. Is this just the operation of 10.6 clients? I would imagine the address panel would populate automatically when opened rather than necessitating the entering of data to perform a lookup.
I feel like I am missing a switch or something simple. Anyone have any ideas?
Other than that issue it all works fine (iCal server with 50+ users scheduling).
    Thanks folks.
    Bill
addendum 1/19/11 - The fact that functionality is lost as the version increases and is typical of Apple software. I use it in an enterprise environment. How is one to invite multiple contacts to a meeting using Address Panel when you can only do one lookup at a time? Does anyone have this working in iCal 4 as it worked with iCal 3 where all contacts/resources/locations are listed without prodding for data?

  • Problems syncing from contacts to address book

I have an iMac which now runs OSX 10.6.8 and an iPhone 3GS that runs the latest iOS 5.
Long story short, I downgraded from OSX Lion back to OSX 10.6.8 a few months ago.  Got quite a few problems doing so...  ended up creating a brand new user and transferring music, videos and photos manually.  Then, the iOS 5 got out and I upgraded my phone right away.  I couldn't figure out icloud at first but understood yesterday that it works only with Lion.  I thought I'd keep it on my phone if I ever want to install Lion again.
I also realised that I never transfered back in my iMac all my iCal events and Contacts.
So yesterday, I tryied to sync my Contacts, iCal and Notes from my iPhone to my iMac.  In the iTune info tab, under each section, there was a message mentioning that since I use iCloud, I don't need to sync my info through iTune and doing so would possibly create duplicates.  I try to sync them anyway since I only had to in Address Book.  I got the message to merge or replace.  I selected merge (yes I had at least one contact in Address Book).  Nothing happened...  iCal didn't merge anything and neither Address Book.  I tried to create new events in my phone and iMac and these were syncing but not the original ones.  Also added a contact in Address Book and it got sync with my phone.  I didn't try creating one on the phone to sync it through but assumed that it was working.
After going through a few discussion threads, I decided to delete the iCloud account on my phone since I didn't need it and try re-syncing.  The iCloud message in the iTune's info tab was gone so I thought everything would be good and I could select merge my contact again without any problem.  I was wrong...  I lost all my contacts...  I freeeeeeeeaked out !!  Thank God I didn't unplug the phone and restored it right away to get everything back.
I tried it again this afternoon but only tried to sync iCal.  I didn't get to choose between merge and replace and the same thing happened again...  lost everything...  iCal but also Contacts which I find strange because I didn't check the Contact option in iTune....   I got everything restored back even thought it's always scary to try things like this....  So for now on, I don't delete my iCloud info on my Phone and do not sync any other info.  I'm actually scared to plug it in and always double check that my contacts are all there before unplugging.
So here I am...  don't really know what to do...  I read stuff about removing apple.isync files or something...  or other options but they never quite answer my problem...
There is still the option to type all my contacts back in Address Book..  I don't have that many... but it's a pain...
Sorry about the long message here
Thanks for your help and for your time.
    Ben

Clearly iSync has got confused about what new data it needs to pull from the phone. Usually resetting the sync history solves this, but as it hasn't for you... try this:
I would suggest sending all the contacts from the phone to the Mac manually via Bluetooth: *Contacts > Options > More > Advanced > Send all Contacts > Via Bluetooth* (or similar, depending on the exact phone model)
This will send vCard(s) which can be imported into the Mac Address Book simply by double-clicking the file that arrives on your Mac.
Merge or remove any duplicates as they are imported. You can also use the *Card > Look for Duplicates* command in Address Book.
Once all your Contacts are exactly as you want them in Address Book do a full backup of them:
*File > Export > Address Book archive...*
Finally, load iSync, click your phones icon and choose *Reset Device...* from the Devices menu.
This will force iSync to remove all the existing contacts from the phone and completely replace them with all the new nicely sorted out ones from the Mac Address Book.
From this point on, iSync should keep track of what needs updating on each subsequent sync.

  • How can I delete all my contacts in Address Book?

I had syncing issues between my Entourage 2008 contacts, my Address Book contacts, and the PowerMac for Blackberry application. As a reference, I have around 5,000 contacts. I have solved the issue, but there is some collateral damage: read on.
Address Book duplicated my contacts two or three times, and it also created around 60,000 empty contacts. I have been able to clean the Entourage contacts, which only suffered from duplication but not from new empty entries.
I tried to delete the Address Book duplicate and empty entries. The easy way out, I thought, was to Select All and delete. It does not work. Given I have ended with around 80,000 contacts, after I Select All, and try to delete, the program hangs, and I have to Force Quit the Address Book application.
I tried to locate the Address Book file where contacts are stored, but I have not found an obvious name that would point to it, nor have I read anything about such file in the different discussion forums. So no success on this.
I have even used scripts in the past for deleting duplicates and merging contacts in Entourage, but I have not found one for Address Book that could take care of the massive number of empty entries with "No Name".
So, is there a way to delete all my contacts in Address Book?

There are two possibilities you can try:
    1. Delete all your duplicate entries. You can try downloading and running this Applescript Remove Duplicates, which will create a group named Duplicates in Address Book, from which you should be able to delete those entries, by selecting the Group, then in the next column to the Right, select all the entries and choose Delete Cards from the Edit menu.
    2. If that doesn't work, you can do this:
    1. Quit Address Book if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and delete an of these files/folders you find there:
    • ABPerson.skIndex
    • ABPerson.skIndexInverted
    • Address Book - xxxxx.abbu
    • AddressBook.data
    • AddressBook.data.beforesave
    • AddressBook.data.previous
    • Images
    • LastImport.plist
    3. Restart Address Book and see if the default cards are there (Apple card, and your Me card) and if all seems to be working correctly.

  • How to delete ALL contacts in Address Book 10.6.3.(1091) in Macbook?

I made no effort ever to add the contents of my iPhone to my Macbook. Ever. Right now in my Skype app that I have only Just downloaded have I just found ALL of my iPhone contacts in it's contact list. NOT GOOD. I am looking for a way to remove my iPhone phone book from the Address Book on my Mac and then remove ALL those same contacts from the Skype contact list.
I am now removing my iPhone contacts from Address Book on my Macbook one by one manually. Is there a shorter way of doing this?

    Are you using iCloud?
What is the file format you intend to use to import contacts? If it an Address Book Backup (.abbu) then perhaps you can import it. That would delete your entire Address Book and replace it with the backup.
I might suggest simply moving your entire ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder to the Desktop. That seems rather drastic though, and if your contacts are stored in iCloud it might not make a difference.

  • Is there a way to have the address panel open automatically when opening Mail in Mavericks?

Before upgrading to Mavericks, Mail panels such as the Address Panel would open if they were open last time quit the program. Now I can't see a way to have this happen. I have to manually open these.

You can add the Address Panel to the toolbar for easy access. Personally, I just start typying and let Autofill enter the email address I want.

  • Using O2M I imported my contacts into Address Book. However upon exiting the contacts are not saved. This is on a new Macbook Pro Lion OS. How does one save the newly imported contacts?

Using the program O2M I successfully imported emails from Outlook 2003 to Mail, and calendar events to iCal. However, repeated attempts to import contacts to Address Book have failed. The contacts appear to import, but when I close Address Book and reopen it, the contacts are gone. I tried File-Save, but Save is greyed out. This is a new Macbook Pro with the latest Lion OS. I wonder if O2M has not been updated to work with Lion. Or is there something I am overlooking in the import process?

Hi Denisej and others who have encountered the same problem,
I tried your work around. Unfortunately it did not work out for me because in my contacts there are an unknown number that still "refused" to be imported like that. When such a contact was in the group I selected for import the whole lot would be lost again after re-opening Address Book. Finally that meant that I had to import each contact one-by-one, each time with the need to close down Address Book. A job to go nuts and end up with a mouse injury. So I decided to use the Migration Assistant that Lion now offers
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3284404
together with Windows Migration Assitant on my old PC. Obviously both Mac and PC have to be on the same network. For this I did not need to do anything special. Both make use of the same router and that is apparently sufficient. When migrating the contacts Lion creates a new account, so you need to log in to that new account to see your migrated contacts. I used the Export Address Book Archive function in the Address Book menu to copy the lot to my own Apple account. I got rid of the new account and I was finally where I wanted to be in the first place.
