No Content on iTouch When Disconnected

My iTouch is relatively new (it's been in use since last December) and has had few issues up to now. Sometimes the internal speaker disables after the iTouch has been connected to a computer and then disconnected. But connecting it to the computer again, then disconnecting, usually causes the speaker to work again, so it's not too much of a problem unless that's a sign of some kind of corruption that I need to repair.
More recently, however, and similarly to the speaker issue, when I connect to a computer and then disconnect, all music and video content is inexplicably missing from the iTouch - it says there's 'No Content' in Music and Movies. So I'll have my iTouch charging, then disconnect it and go on my way only to find, later, that it has no music or videos whatsoever (although all the apps are sill on, and all e-mails still present). Like the issue with the speaker, this one may be temporarily resolved by connecting to a computer again; usually, the content reappears after it's been connected.
I don't sync the iTouch on connection. I don't have all of my music on our newer computer, so I've set it so I can just add and remove songs manually - that way I don't lose the ones that I added from the old computer. And, also, I share an iTunes library with family members, and don't want all their songs to be synced to my iTouch.
So iTunes shouldn't be erasing anything. Even when, on the iTouch, it says there's no content, everything displays as being on the iTouch when I look at it on iTunes.
It's not a critical issue, as it may be resolved by reconnecting and disconnecting (though I sometimes have to do it multiple times) but if there's some solution to the problem that will allow me to retain all that I have on the iTouch at present, it'd be nice to learn of it. This is a trick I just found to deal w/ the "no conent" bug. Hopefully Apple will eventually figure out how to fix this once and for all, but until then...

"Connect to iTunes and see if the missing content is visible ON THE IPHONE in iTunes. If yes, I attempt to play one of the missing items FROM THE IPHONE. It that works, I force a manual sync and then eject the iPhone. I expect the "Updating Library... this may take a few minutes." message. If my content is back, great, if not, I plug in the iPhone again, and when the screen on the iPhone shows "sync in progress" I finger the slider to abort it. Back to the ipod app screen and where the "updating library" message was now shows, "canceling sync" and then "updating library" and then my library shows everything that's there."
