No data in the activity monitor

All of a sudden I don't have any data in the activity monitor. Here's what happened. I was using safari viewing online pictures. I kept getting the rolling ball between pictures and noticed that safari was using 100%+ in processor usage and safari seemed slow. So I rebooted and opened the activity monitor and no data shows up. I run a quick hardware test and all pass. I havn't gone back to the pictures yet but normal browsing seems to be fine. I watch a few 1080P trailers and they work fine too.
All ideas on why the monitor doesn't show data?
Ray

Hmm...let's try this:
Go to User/Library/Preferences and drag the com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist file to your Desktop. Then try launching Activity Monitor again to see if that makes anything show up. If so, then it was a corrupted preferences file, and you can then trash the one on your Desktop.
If that doesn't solve the problem, the only thing I can suggest is to Trash the application and the preferences file, then reinstall it from your 10.4 DVDs.

  • New Photos App take a very long time to upload 20 Pictures, while the Activity Monitor is showing much more data sent (MB) than these two pictues

The New photos app is taking a very long time to upload images. It stays a very long time at 20,104 for example. When I check the Activity Monitor (Network) it shows that the computer is actually uploading stuff. After about 2 hours, only 20 Pics&Videos are uploaded. The uploaded pics and videos are about 500MB while the data sent is around 1GB. I am positive that Photos is the only thing uploading data at the moment.
    Anyone else facing this problem?

It can take days, even weeks.
Tell me 2 things and I will tell you the estimated upload time.
1 How big is your Library (in GB)
2 How fast is your upload speed.
Or you can just use the upload time calculator and do it yourself

  • What is mdworker and mdworker32 in the activity monitor.

what is mdworker and mdworker32 in the activity monitor.  my computer is running slower than normal and was wondering if a software issue may be the cause.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

In that setting I have not enabled the adaptive junk mail controls, the square is unticked. Similarly the global junk preferences.

  • For the average person what really is the point of the activity monitor app when all you really want to know is whether your mac is running at its best?

I have had my imac for nearly 18 months now,
It's okay, is the best I can say about it.
    It cost me around £800+
So recently (and foolishly!) I downloaded OS Mavericks when I was actually looking for a freebie word processor programme (I got Bean because it's simple like me.)
Now the point of all this is that Mavericks has new features like a redesigned Safari (But I ain't noticed any difference yet) and Imaps (Huh!) and Ibooks and Imovie or something.
So when you are oldish like me, you really don't want people to keep changing and introducing new stuff (most of which is pointless anyway) all the time; because it takes us old ***** a while to get used to the last "improvement."
So you try and get rid of all these new apps that you don't want and didn't ask for anyway,
and then you find out you can't, because they're an integral part of the new OS.
    Brilliant!
Then you find that Mail has to redo itself and this thing no longer works properly etc. and you start wishing you hadn't got up that morning...
So you try and get it all back the way it was..
    And you can't.
Because you don't have an external hard drive to use the Time machine back up facility.
So you get in touch with Apple Support and it's now nearly bedtime, but at least you feel like you might be gettin' somewhere.
You talk to the supportguy and suddenly you can't remember what the problem is and what your name is, and you're thinking you might as well order in a pizza seein' as you've drunk the last of the gin..."
Anyway the guy manages to keep his temper and you get some degree of order restored but the machine still seems "jumpy" so someone says to you
"Check out the Activity Monitor! That'll tell you if something's not working right."
So you do, but it doesn't.
Just a bunch of numbers and CPU stuff and User Idiot Input etc.
All you really want is some little box to pop up and say,
"Hey! yyyou've really ssscrewed things upppp-p here, old mmmmman!!. This programme is no longer functioning properly, that thing appears to frozen, and you just wiped half your saved photos of Aunt Jessie's 94th birthday celebration (the one's where she had her eyes open)..
Press here for a full maintenance overview and repair menu.."
By this time you are on the floor, your leg's got cramp and you really really need a pee.
But there ain't no maintenance programme, just an activity monitor app you can't make any sense out of, so you yank the **** power cord out of the socket and go to bed..
    So you try and

    Hi Ray-
I'm having the exact same problem and have searched the web for hours looking for a solution (multiple spawned avgcmgr processes that consume cpu).
    Did you find any solution?
    Thanks so much!

    Hey Claudenir,

Remember subject profile consists of catalogue, codes and so on.

  • Checking Memory Usage via the Activity Monitor

In trying to find out why iPhoto is so slow, it was suggested that I check the activity monitor to see what applications are using the most memory. Here is what I saw (see below). Does anyone know what kernel_task is? It is using up the most memorr and I have no idea what it is. I would have asked this of the very generous person who has been helping me but I could not reply to his last post....thanks for any information.

Uninstall it. You don't need it.
Be sure to uninstall it properly - there will likely be files littered around the various LaunchAgent, LaunchDaemon folders.

I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
If you did manage to reach the desktop after doing any of the above

How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?

Update to 10.4.11 using the combo update or Software Update along with all the other updates that goes along with it.

  • Can I quit all processes in the Activity Monitor?

    Hello,
I have a problem with an application that might be caused by a background application but I don't know how to tell which one.
So I would like to know if I can quit all processes in the Activity Monitor without harming my computer?

Ok, thank you! Someone said he wouldn't do it, then my friend said that in the worst case I'll just have to restart my computer but I was still worried about it.

  • Some processes are called (null) in the Activity Monitor

Hi, I did "archive and install" to Leopard, and applied the 10.5.1 update as well... However it still doesn't fix the problem I've been having..
In the activity monitor, some processes (i.e.: Word, Entourage, Excel (but not power point), Photoshop CS3 Extended, Adobe Acrobat Professional 8) are called (null).... They are still running perfectly but it just annoys me...
Anyone has the remedy of this problem??
    Thanks a lot...

  • How do I know what programs I can quit in the activity monitor?

I use a macbook 13in and run lion.  Last night, I checked out the actiivty monitor and there were programs/files(?) I didn't recognize.  I understand that some of these are important and quitting them may cause problems.  How do I know what programs I can quit?  Thanks for the help!

    HellO:
IMHO, you should not quit anything.  In fact, looking at the activity monitor if nothing is wrong is, IMHO, a waste of time.

  • What things can you close down in the activity monitor? Without messing something up.

Im just wondering what you can close down in the activity monitor without messing something up.

Basically, only the items which appear in the Dock. Quitting unfamiliar processes should only be done as a troubleshooting step and when instructed.
