No Deck Communication

Im using a Sony HDV HVR-M10E with FCP. I am unable to control the deck unless I set the deck to down convert to DV (with ilink)
I have used this before with success with it set not to down convert! What have I done! and suggestion on where to look would be great..
Thanks
Rob

Hi - Is the source tape HDV 1080/60i or HDV 1080/50i?
Some of the Sony vtrs will not play HDV 720p video, or HDV with 4 channels of sound out the iLink port.
Hope this helps.

  • FCP6 – HDCAM deck (J-H3) – Kona 3 : No Comm?

I've just started the process of capturing and logging my HDCAM tapes, but I'm having trouble with the J-H3 deck communicating with my system. It's going though the Kona 3 card, using the HD-SDI connection. I'm using the ProRes codec, and have Tiger not Leopard, so none of those issues. I can play the footage into the capture & log preview window, but there's no time code coming through and I can't control the deck from FCP (only manually). The message under the preview window is 'No Communication'. I've tried numerous setups in both FCP and the AJA control panel, but nothing works. I've checked the cables and redone them to make sure they're hooked up properly from the deck to the Kona 3 breakout box and then from the breakout box to the computer. Sheesh, this is driving me nuts as this ought to be the easy part. (I've been messing with this all weekend and am at my wits end.) Any ideas out there? (And yes, there is time code as this was shot with the Sony 900R and I can see the code on the deck.) Thanks.

Try setting the RS-422 device control setting to LTC+VITC.

  • Troubles with communications between Deck and FTP

There appears to be a problem in the communication between the deck and the Final Cut Pro system. Audio and Video signal does to not appear to waver in anyway.
In FCP Log and Capture mode, the incoming or deck Time Code display briefly flickers/scrambles, which is simultaneous to a flicker between "VTR OK" and "No Communication" in the Comm Status display. The FCP system interprets this a new tape being inserted into the deck and stops playback.
This communication breakdown is random, as multiple playbacks over the same stretch of tape result in varying stoppages, and there is never any kind of flicker in the timecode display on the deck.
When I attempt to "Capture Now" from a "Non-Controllable Device", the FCP gives a warning that it cannot digitize when a device is not chosen in my capture settings, even though a device is most certainly chosen.
In case the "Custom Easy Set Up" had become corrupted, I created a new "Easy Set Up" that resulted in the exact same outcome. I have also unconnected all cables, found no broken or bent pins, and re-connected the cables but to no avail.
FCP Version 5.1.4, the deck is JVC HD-050U, and the serial port is R-422 through a Kona Interface.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

check in your Kona control panel to see what the Kona is seeing on input as far as video is concerned. That deck has component HD out, no HDSDI. take a look at
    http://www.convergent-design.com/CDProductsHDConnectMI.htm
for future continued use of that deck. check your deck that it is enabled for 422 control and that Timecode is auto (LTC and VITC) also verify LTC and VITC is selected in your device control preset. My guess is your kona is trying to see standard def component and the deck isn't set to downconvert.
I normally bring in the camera and bump up to DVCProHD 720 via HD-SDI w clone code, and work with DVCProHD

  • No communication with the deck

Hi, my mac finally recognized my dv camera and now when I open log and capture it says vtr ok for 2 seconds and then no communication. Even if I start log and capture with the video playing same thing happens. Im using final cut 6 os x 10.4.11 dv ntsc settings and I tried with all settings even knowing that the footage is ntsc. I cant get it to work and I dont have i-movie. What can I do to capture this tapes so I can finish this project? I have a canon zr60 and same thing happens
    Please I need help!!!
    cheers

yeah, I did trash preferences. Also, I tried that too but didnt work. Now after trying again with my canon camera with no luck my computer does not see the sony again. I also notice that even without the firewire cable connected the screen says dv-in. I dont remember but does the camera says that only when the firewire cable is connected?

  • "Unable to initialize video deck" inquiry

I am new to Mac and FCE, so I ask for some slack...
I am trying to get video from my Panasonic AG DVX 100 into FCE.
About my system: IMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.5.2. I have FCE 4 on this computer, not an upgrade of earlier program, but version 4, straight out of the box. I know FCE is working, because I have edited a hour long project on it.
Here's my issue: With the first project complete, I want to import some new video into FCE and start another project. I connect the camera to the Mac via firewire (the white cable that I bought at the Mac store). When I go to "File" in FCE, I go to capture, and I get the following message:
*"Unable to initialize video deck. You may still use capture now."*
I continue by selecting "capture now." The capture window appears with "preview disabled" on the color bars, "no communication" at the bottom of the window. I hit "capture now" in the bottom right and I get the following message:
*"Attempt to capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presets and try again."*
I can't seem to track down "capture presets" , so that's my first issue. This was not a problem the first time I captured video. While at the Mac store, we plugged the camera into other Macs, but still would not get a signal. On FC, it would recognize the camera for a second or two, then flash the "no communication" error. The Mac folks believed it was a camera video out issue.
    Some additional factors:
    1. it's not the video output on this particular camera. Since that Mac store visit, I hooked it up to another computer and I could see video. So I'm confident that the camera will send video through this firewire.
    2. Back to my original project, I imported video into FCE using this cable and a different mini dv camera (sony). It worked with the Sony camera, but will not work with this Panasonic.
I asked another friend, a MAC/FC/Panasonic DVX 100 guy, and he has never encountered this particular error message. He believes it's some setting within the computer that can be fixed through a software patch.
I would be most grateful for insight into solving what is likely a problem others have experienced. Please keep in mind that I am new to this whole process, and will likely show this thread to the people at the Mac store during my next one-on-one class.
    Thank you very much.

    David:
Thanks for your suggestion. I did check the firewire to ensure it's securely in place, and it seems like it is.
I did connect this camera and this firewire into a friend's macbook, and the signal was successfully received.
So I don't think it's a "loose wire" possibility. We also checked another camera into my Mac's firewire port, and it was successful.
So for some unknown reason, this particular Mac will not recognize this particular camera.
Again, your insights are greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to initialize video deck, (can not capture from camera)

    Hello All,
I am using a quad core G5 and am trying to capture some footage into Final Cut Pro version 5.0. I have two Panasonic DVX 100B mini DV cameras. I normally capture with a JVC BR-DV3000 mini DV deck but it is currently not working. So I'm trying to capture using my camera.
I hooked my camera up to my computer via firewire and started final cut, When I click File > Log and capture a little window pops up that reads:
" Unable to initialize video deck. You may still log offline clips or use Capture Now"
I'm not sure why this box is appearing. When I click the capture now button, the Capture window pops up and then I press play on the video camera and the footage plays on the camera but the capture window remains black or empty. I have tried both cameras and two different firewire cables with the same results. I have also tried to restart the computer.
Can anyone shine some light on this situation?
Thank you so much for your help.
    Mike Wardynski

Are there any other firewire devices connected to your Mac?
Did you go into your easy setup and reselect the DV setting for the standard you are using?
Also sometimes, shutting down and restarting your Mac, after making these changes some times allows the new device to be recognized.
One other thing, the DV camera may have a menu setting that needs to be set for communication via firewire possibly?

  • Cannot capture, but can do pretty much everything else with deck. What now?

    Hello everybody,
I'm writing for the Gateway Media Center. We're basically a small group of students which handles anything video or TV related for a public school district, mainly the high school. Our main editing system (Mac connected to a MiniDV deck via FireWire)is the subject of this post.
And we've got a bit of a problem. I've seen it at least once before on these forums, but no solution in that topic helped.
Basically, we can't capture video or audio with Final Cut Pro, but we can control the deck, watch audio levels coming from the deck within Final Cut, and even record edited material to tape with the deck just fine. We CAN capture with another application.
I'd like to say that NO, we have not updated anything within the past six months or so, at least not to my knowledge. (The problem started last week).
*_A detailed decription of what DOESN'T work:_*
Log & Capture window: The preview monitor within the window always shows the default color bars and the black horizontal band that roughly says 'Preview Disabled'.
    *With device 'FireWire NTSC' selected:*
*Aud+Vid, Capture Now:* The black window with the whire Final Cut window opens. The bottom says 'Waiting for Timecode'. After this sits there for a few seconds, a message pops up and says roughly 'The operation could not be completed because there is no video'. The deck is automatically paused.
*Video Only, Cap. Now:* same as above^.
*Audio Only, Cap. Now:* Black window, bottom says 'capturing now', as it should, but when the Esc key is hit a message that says roughly 'ERROR: Final Cut could not read the movie file just captured' pops up.
*With 'Non-Controlable device' selected:* same as above, except that 'Waiting for Timecode' is replaced with 'Allocating Disk Space'.
*A detailed description of what DOES work:*
    - Video and Audio go TO the deck, whether it's from Timeline/Canvas, Viewer, or Print to Video. I succesfully recorded an edit to tape just yesterday.
    - The deck can be controlled with the JKL keys, the buttons on the Log & Cap. window, go to In point and even Batch Capture cues the tape correctly.
    - Timecode is visible in the top right of the preview monitor in the L&C window, and it is the right timecode.
    - Audio levels visible (in that stand-alone window which is usually to the right of the timeline) match what I'm hearing from the deck's analog monitor.
    - Vidi, a simple little program, can record video which is manually cued with the deck. The saved video file(s) can then be successfully imported into FCP.
    _*Trouble-shooting ALREADY attempted:*_
    1) Correct turn on order: Shut everything down, unplug the deck's power, turn on and log into Mac, plug in deck and wait for it to wake up, turn the deck on, then launch Final Cut.
    2) Check deck's input and output settings.
    3) Unplug other FireWire devices. (We use an external hard drive connected on the same firewire bus. Not that it's ever been a problem)
    4) Change Captrue Scratch location and make sure there's enough disk space.
    5) Delete Final Cut Pro Preferences and that 'com.apple.finalcutpro.plist' thing.
    _*Trouble-shooting NOT attempted:*_
    1) Replace FireWire cable. I think it's safe to say the cable's fine since the computer can capture with Vidi, but I guess I should try this too, next time I get a chance.
    2) Remove receipts and Re-install Final Cut Pro. (Really, a last resort.)
    _*The specs:*_
Yes, this stuff is pretty old. Like I said, we're talking about a pulic school district, and the system usually suits us just fine.
FCP: Final Cut Pro HD (Academic) 4.5
+set up with the 'DV NTSC 48kHz' Easy Setup. Video playback on 'FireWire NTSC 720x480'. Yes, External Video All Frames.+
*The Mac:* PowerMac G4 (of what I believe would be called the MDD case model family)
OS: Mac OS X, version 10.3.9
CPUs: Dual 1.25GHz PowerPC G4, 2 MB L3 cache per processor
    RAM: 1 GB DDR SDRAM
HDDs: Two drives, reportedly on the 'ATA-6' bus.
*The Deck:* JVC SR-DVM700 (3-in-1 MiniDV (with the 'PROFESSIONAL DV' logo), hard drive, and DVD-RW/RAM), 4-pin FireWire port connected to 6-pin port on Mac.
+Deck's Monitor:+ one professional CRT video monitor with built-in mono speaker, analog inputs directly connected to deck, made by JVC.
Sorry about the long post, I wanted to make it clear.
We're getting into a nice crunch as the school year is ending, and we really need to get this running. Any tips would be great!
    Thanks,
    Jake T.

That makes sense, but our problem started last week - Final Cut captured fine before then.
And I don't think it's been updated lately, as 7.4.5 is the latest version of QuickTime for OS10.3.9. If an update caused the problem, wouldn't the update be to 7.4.5, and not 7.3.1?
    Nevertheless, I'll try it.
    Thanks,
    Jake T.

  • Lost communication with JH3

Yesterday I tried to begin a capture of material for a new project. After repeated attempts to reboot, examined all connections, I decided the RS-232 cable must have gone bad. Drove 140 RT to replace it. This morning I did and found no difference.
My next step was to upgrade the firmware on the Kona 3 board and did so. Ran Aja VTR Xchange - beautiful picture and synched time code but the one box says " NO VTR connected".....
Decided to try running FCP and open the Log and Capture window to see what it said. Same thing. Nice picture SMPTE time code appears to be fine- "No Communication". So ...
Now I am down to the deck controls and some hidden internal settings having changed somehow, or continued software incompatibility.
I will say that prior to this issue - I have had splendid synchronization between all of these devices.
    FCP- 7.0.3
    Kona 3-
    Sony JH-3
It seems that one minute FCP setting is off now. I've gone through the Audio/ Video settings and will return to all the preferences settings. But I am confused and don't get it..
Thanks for any help solving this!

    HI Meg,
No the JH -3 is not a switchable on/off  the RS-232 control port. I'll verify with Sony but I've gone through everything on the deck and menu. Unless it was damaged or fried the control board in some way I think I can eliminate the deck. So I am now going to go through all of the settings on the FCP panels and preferences. I must have done something when I used Soundflower to capture audio the other day...
That is all I can think of.....
I use a JH-3 as my play/capture deck as I am still shooting with the Sony HDW-730 - a **** fine camera. I've moved into 2k at 250 fps and 4k at up to 60 fps but for wildlife and specifically Birds... these new cameras are not ready yet. Not for what I do anyway!
If I can figure out what I've done I'll post it up here. I've got to figure it out for the next Job... !!!

  • Hooking up Visual Communicator

My wife is an Elementary school teacher. One of her daily duties is to have about 4-5 kids give a live school news/lunch menu/etc. show. I told her about visual communicator and told her that I would like to set this up for the kids. With the chance of using different backdrops and all the video effects, I think that the kids would love it. Problem is, I am really trying to find someone to talk to about the hooking up procedure. Would prefer to talk to some one personally on phone or in person, but this is the next best thing. What she uses at school is, what she calls a broadcast cart. This consists of a roll around cart with an Ocean Matrix model #OMX9040 (whatever it is), a dvd/vhs deck below that, and a Panasonic Web Cam (which looks like an actual camcorder attached to the cart. My wife does not know anything about theses items. All she knows is that the camera is plugged right into the wall. A computer is not incorporated anywhere into this scenario. Seeing that she would be doing this morning program LIVE, and have to use a computer to use the Visual Communicator program, I am in a quandry on how this would be done, and the process of how it would have to be hooked up to do it live, and be able to run it through the school network (monitors throughout the classrooms)

It is always best to shut down your Mac when connecting any monitor.

  • HELP! Adobe Production Premium on a decked out 2014 macbook pro 13 inch.

    Hello fine apple community.
I have a few questions that hopefully someone can help out with. I've tried to search high and low but had no luck.
I currently have an imac for my video editing needs. I have Adobe CS5 Production Premium. I would like to get a second computer to do some video stuff while i'm at work when I have downtime. Mostly editing in Premiere and some effects work in After Effects. Nothing major, just keying, green screen work, etc. I also do a lot of Photoshop.
With my uses listed above, I was looking at getting a decked out 13inch macbook pro. I was planning on updated the processor to - 2.8 dual core intel i7 processor. I was also going to upgrade the ram to 16GB. I don't think there's anything else I could upgrade with this model.
My question is, will the above macbook pro handle Premiere, after effects and photoshop?
I've tried to do some reading about dedicated GPU vs the integrated that is in the 13 inch macbook pros. I'm kind of confused on all that stuff and have never been able to find an answer if a macbook pro 13 inch will handle Adobe software with it's integrated processor?
Secondly, I feel like a pain asking this but when editing on premiere, I read that you should always have your video clips and your project saved to an external harddrive.... I'm guessing that's the external scratch disk? As it ill use of less processing power and ram than if you were editing on your internal harddrive? Is this correct? Should all video work be done with the project and video clips saved on an external harddrive?
Any other tips that I should be aware of when handling editing video?
    Thanks so much.

That's an odd problem. If it were me I think I'd do a full backup to an external drive and reinstall the OS from the Recovery partition. If an "in-place" install (meaning overwriting the existing system files) doesn't work, the next step would be to wipe the disk and install a fresh copy.

  • No communication with video playdeck

My device control is from a AJA Kona3: 25 Sony VTR B and, of course, I'm digitizing a digibeta tape.
All morning and afternoon it has been working fine. Now, for some reason, FCP won't recognise the player. I can play, rewind, or stop from the deck and it will appear on the L&C window, but I cannot control it from FCP.
I have checked my settings (maybe I looked at the wrong places), have not changed anything in terms of settings, checked the wires and I shut down everything. Still, no communication.
    Have I missed something?

just checkin, but are you sure the deck is in "remote mode"?

  • R.E. Firewire deck compatability-with 10.4.4 --i got it fixed

Earlier today I requested assistance with reference to the pasted topic in my current post----I am happy to say that i got it fixed--my Panasonic AG-DV1000 is now up and running carrying the signal through firewire from my G5---is functioning well with FCEHD---I followed the instructions given to someone in an earlier post that had the same problem after upgrading to Tiger [10.4.4]--right after I did I lost communication from the G5 to the deck--by going to 'library' and then 'receipts' and deleting all Quicktime files that contained names of earlier Quicktime versions and then going to www.Quicktime.com and downloading and installing the latest Quicktime 7.0 I fixed the problem---now I can get down to business and learn the FCEHD software--it is similar to Premier and I have been using that for over six years--thanks

  • Capture Communication Beta SP YES - DigiBeta NO

Hi All.... I'm on deadline and have just hired the Digital Betacam deck to grab some final shots then output to tape.
When using an SP tape the VTR in LOG & CAPTURE window is OK, but when using a DIGITAL BETACAM tape it comes up NO COMMUNICATION.
This is without changing any settings, unplugging or anything.
I'm on FCP 5.1.1 + Decklink HD Pro using SDI & RS422(9P) remote to connect to the SONY DVW-M2000P deck.
    Please help...

For what it is worth, these are the settings I am using with my Blackmagic Extreme for the Blackmagic 25Hz Capture Preset:
    Protocol: Sony RS-422
    Time Source: LTC
    Port: RS422 Deck Control
Audio Device Control Mapping (CH 1-8): 8 Channels
    Frame Rate 25
Do not use deck search mechanism
    Pre-Roll: 3 seconds
    Post-Roll: 3 seconds
    Capture Offset:0.000 Frames
    Handle size: 00:00:00:00
    Playback offset: 00:00:00:04
I have no idea whether the settings will be the same in your version of FCP (I am still using 5.0.4), but we have two machines using these settings and Extreme cards and they both work fine.

  • First FCP issue....no communication

Well it was bound to happen. My first issue with FCP. I was capturing video for several days now and when i went to capture another clip and I lost communication in the log and capture window.
    Here are some details.
I am capturing DV NTSC from my sony dsr-11 using firewire. At first I thought it was a loose firewire connection on the deck but I also tried to connect my vx-2000 camera and still could not get it to recognize it.
In easy set up I am using Format:NTSC and Use: is DV-NTSC.
All was working fine and it just stopped communication.
Under capture setting I have the Device Control : Firewire NTSC and Capture/Input DV NTSC 48 kHz.
The only issue I was having was that I am getting the message after capture that the audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape. But I was capturing both audio and video just fine for days and it just stopped communication. I had notice that the camera was set to record at 12 bit and I change it to 16 bit several tapes ago. But it will not recognize the firewire on either 12 bit or 16 bit recorded tape. The 100 or so clips that I have captured so far show as 48.0 KHz and 16-Bit Integer audio.
Just strange as it was working for days and just does not communicate now. I also tried to trash the preference files to no avail. I have tried all that I know how to at this point.
Thanks for any advice you can give me
    Kirk

For starters always make sure that your deck is connected and turned on before you open FCP
So shut down FCP and try that first.
You might also repair your permissions and then restart your computer
Also, once you trash permissions, then FCP goes back to its default settings so depending on what you are capturing you may need to adjust your capture settings

  • No communication with device control through AJA Io?

So this is weird (to me). I'm trying to capture a few Beta tapes and can't seem to get the device control going. For whatever reason I'm getting the "No Communication" message in my Log and Capture window. Of course, I'm getting the image in the window, but I can't control the deck through Log and Capture.
    My settings seem right:
    -Deck in remote mode
-FCP set to AJA Io device control
-Capture settings at AJA Io Betacam to DV (I know this isn't a problem because I can see the image)
-I have unplugged and reset each cable in each port on the deck, Io, and computer
The only thing I can think about is that the last footage I captured was from my MiniDV camera, so I must have tweaked some kind of a setting that I don't know about. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stef

Device control: AJA Io RS-422 NTSC
The RS-422 cable is connected to both the deck and the AJA. The Firewire cable is connected to my 400 port and the AJA.
There has to be some kind of a problem with my 400 port, because I just daisy chained the AJA (which only uses a 400 cable) through my Lacie drive, which is connected to the laptop through the 800 port.
Is there an explanation for this? Hopefully besides, "Sounds like your 400 port chucks it, Stef. Time to go get a new one."
