No Desktop Cinema Preview ctl-f12

Can anyone help. I've lost the facility to use Desktop Cinema Preview. Total pain, seems to have happened during the 10.4.11 update. I've tried everything:
Scrapped prefs
Reinstalled FC Pro 5
Reinstalled Quicktime pro
Reinstalled OSX and did all the updates to 10.4.11 (tried it in 10.4.6 and up, same problem)
Grrrr. It fails to appear in the Audio/Video settings
Any ideas from anyone?
The machine is an iMac Intel dual core 2.16, 2Gb,Maxtor external 320Gb, FC Pro installed on the iMac drive.

Sounds to me like your install could be edgy... might perform a totally clean one... i.e., erase and install OS X, etc... You are running FCP 5.1.4, right?

  • Viewer audio problems with Desktop Cinema Preview

    Hi
I'm using Destop Cinema Preview to output to an external video monitor from the video outpout of my iBook. I'm using a non-Apple patch to allow screen spanning offering me a full screen output from Final Cut Pro (not simply a mirrored desktop). This all works fine with video playing nicely on the external monitor from both the Canvas and the Viewer.
Where it often goes wrong is with the audio:
    1. The audio in the Viewer is delayed and sounds like it's at the wrong sample rate.
    2. Once this has happned in the Viewer, it may begin to happen in the Canvas.
    3. Once it's happened in either, it won't stop.
    4. Re-booting FCP sometimes restores normal sound in the Canvas, but not usually the viewer.
I've tried altering the Audio in User Pref from Low to High. This worked once. The problem is the same across different projects. I am using 48Khz in each case.
I've checked System Prefs in the OS, and there's no issue there.
The audio is output-ed from the headphone jack to an external amp, but shows the same symptom using the built-in speakers.
I do not have this problem when hiring in a deck and sending both audio and video out via Firewire.
I don't know if this is relevant, but I am also having problems recording VO through my MBox via USB 2.0 and into the Voice-Over tool.
    Any help appreciated.

Well folks, I took your advice and bought myself an Canopus ADVC110 with which I have a number of issues.
    Here's my setup:
Firewire 6pin at the back going to my Firewire drive which goes to my computer (all faults below are the same when I go direct from the converter to the Mac).
Rear S-Video to plasma screen monitor.
Rear analogue RCA outs to amp.
    Issues:
    1. No throughput on the DV. ie if I plug a camera to the front 4pin Firewire, I can see the pics in FCP, I can control the camera, but I can't get FCP to save the captured file. To do this, I have to unplug the converter and plug the same camera directly to the Mac. I'd rather keep my setup, set up and all connected to my monitor.
    2. The S-video output has a latency of a few frames. NB this is not an FCP issue as everything is in sync on the computer screen and both video and audio are leaving Apple's world via the same Firewire output. It's how the video and audio are leaving the analogue outputs of the converter that is the issue. Somewhere in there, the pics are getting delayed.
It's not a monitor problem either, as I've tested this using the VGA output. ie When my plasma screen mirrors my desktop, it does so instantly.
    3. The analogue outputs are really noisy. They have a real sizzle. Again, I have tested all the cables and routes (replacing the ADVC110 with an iPod), and found there is no interference in the system until I re-introduce the ADVC110. I have also tried adjusting the DIP switches after powering down.
Has anyone else encountered these problems? I'm awaiting word from Canopus tech support too.

  • Desktop Cinema Preview Resizing Problem

When I preview on my second monitor (using CMD-F12) in "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Raw", as soon as I hit play the image jumps up to full screen, reverting to the source pixel aspect when I hit stop. It seems to do this no matter which of the 4 desktop preview modes I'm in. I thought it might be a setting on the monitor (Samsung 245BW) that auto-adjusts, but there's nothing in the setup menu that relates to this. I need to preview at actual resolution.
Has anybody else run into this issue?

  • Digital Desktop Cinema Display Preview Video Not Playing

I can't get the Digital Desktop Cinema Display to work on either a 2nd display or on the main display.  The audio plays correctly and the video will update to the current frame when stopped, but no playing video.  I have "All frames" selected.  In "Single Frames", the screen just stays black while the audio plays.
I have done a clean install of Lion and reinstalled FCP with the update to 7.0.3. I have a Matrox MXO, but so far have left in out of the new clean install.
I have deleted the preferences, repaired permissions, check the disk, emptied the trash and restarted.  Mirror on desktop unchecked. I believe that these are all the suggestions from previous posts.
    Suggestions?
    Configuration:
    FCP 7.0.3
    Mac OS 10.7.3
MBP 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Ram
750 GB disk, measures at about 80-100 mB/s with AJA tool.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
One clip in timeline, both ProRes Proxy.

Have you had a look under audio/video settings ? I had a similar issue and that is where the problem lay.. in the playback tab

  • CS5.5 on Lion has no Digital Cinema Preview. PLEASE HELP!

I am running CS5.5 on Lion and there is no Digital Cinema Preview. Is this a know issue on Lion, as it appears fine on Snow Leopard and older OS? I desperatley need to view my composition full screen on an external projector (I'm doing projection mapping) and I'm completly stuck.
    Please help.

More likely an issue directly attribiutable to Lion. Dunno. Sorry. Quick search turned up only one other inquiry but there may be others:

Suggest you drop by the Lion and Quicktime discussions at apple.com and search carefully for the term dgitial desktop preview or desktop cinema. Traffic over there is heavy and the signla to noise ration is heavy on the noise.

  • Cinema Preview not working on Samsung synchmaster

    Hey there all,
I recently bought a used 2x 2.26 Quad-core MacPro--got a great price and love the faster speed over my previous Power Mac. I'm using my 20" Al Cinema Display and I bought a Samsung 2333HD Synchmaster for a 2nd Display and for OTA HDTV when I'm not working on a project. The Samsung is connected via DVI>HDMI and is a very good TV and a decent display for extended desktop when I'm running multiple apps but, I can't get it to display Cinema Preview when I'm running FCP6--it will flash and goes to black. I'm guessing that the Samsung's HDMI input won't recognize the Canvas playback as "copy protected" and so won't display it. I even went into Display Prefs and switched the toolbar and still no love for Digital Cinema Preview on the Apple display. Is there a work around or should I consider a 2nd 20" Al Cinema Display or use(settle for) the VGA input on the Samsung. I'm not doing anything for broadcast, just my own projects and a few jobs that go direct to DVD for local sale at my church. I previously had a DP Power Mac w/ 2.0GHZ, 2.5 GB RAM and 64MB GPU, a 23" Philips 720p HD-ready TV & used its DVI input that displayed 1080i but, cut off video(no overscan/underscan controls on TV) all way around and never experienced this issue of 2nd attahrd screen going black.
Mac Pro info--Mac OS 10.6/Snow Leopard, 2x 2.66GHz Dual-core CPU = Quad-core, Nvidia GeForce 7300GT(256MB RAM), 4x 512MB sticks of RAM = 2 GB, 2x Pioneer DVR111D Superdrives, 500GB HDD. I have an Apple DVI>VGA adapter but, it's too large to sit next to the connector for the Cinema Display's DVI connector--not enough space between the 2 outputs--not opposed to "shaving" some off either or both to make the adapter fit.
Thanks in advance for any, all thoughts, suggestions.

    Hey there all,
I figured it out. It had been so long since I used FCP, I'd forgotten I needed to refresh AV Devices and the select how I wanted to use Digital Cinema Preview. All is well and things are behaving just fine.
Thanks to all who were trying to figure it out for me.

  • IMac Intel FCP and digital cinema preview

i've just recently upgraded from a g4 powerbook to an intel iMac 20" and curently running 10.4.7 and FCP 5.01. On the powerbook i was running FCP 4.5 and using a TV monitor as a 2nd monitor via the digital cinema preview. Yesterday i bought the mini-dvi to video adapter and plugged in the TV and am unable to get a preview through the TV. I get the extended desktop and even Shake recognises it as a monitor. Im thinking maybe its a Universal thing, my crossgrade arrives next week, or more disturbing perhaps the video card which is the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT which i cant see on the FCP recomended page??
    anyone have any ideas??
    thanks in advace

    imac intel 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

hey everyone who is interested, finally discovered after some research that FCP digital cinema PREVIEW is ONLY supported in AGP cards (such as that exist in powerbooks etc) and does not support the PCI range. So i guess it is means running it through the camera or a canopus type bridge (sound of cash disappearing) thanks mac! You had a great, simple and elegant solution then just threw it away.

  • Re Adobe Muse:  How to get small canvas to fill desktop in preview or publish?

I have noted that many of the Muse demos show a site or page canvas that is like 0-1060 in size.  When previewed or published it fills the desktop screen!  The demonstrators proudly say the site is created in Muse with "no coding."  My site is set to 1150 yet still shows borders.
How do I set a page or site to automatically fill the desktop?
I'd like to try the Parallax Scrolling but I want it to fill the screen!

Just so you are aware, there is only so far you can take a site in Muse. A lot of those sites have been edited outside of Muse after a point to get more out of them. Its a bit falsy that best of Muse bit on Adobe.

  • Spaces and problems with windows on extended desktop (Cinema 20")

I have got a MacBook connected to a Cinema Display 20". When I move a certain window (but this is happening maonly with Mail received messages windows) on a certain space, it should open the next messages always on the same display where the space is located (if you have the extended display the space is double) but on the contrary every message comes on the wrong side of the space. This was not happening till some days ago but now it is always like this. Is there any preference file that I can cancel so that the situation can be fixed as it was in the beginning? I hope I have explaind myself... Thanks

  • When in Final Cut My MacBook Screen goes black

I was working on Final Cut on my Macbook Pro and everything was running smoothly until I used the "help" tab to find out how to freeze frame. I moused over to the drop down window to hit the command and I either clicked on it or something around it, then my screen went black. I have a dual screen and nothing happened to my external monitor. Now the weird thing is when I use any other program my Macbook screen comes back to normal. It even comes back to normal when a Final Cut prompt windows come up on the screen but as soon as I answer the prompt the screen goes back to black. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hit command+F12 and see what happens.
It sounds like you've enabled Desktop Cinema Preview.

  • How can I  make the most of my HD handycam and FCS?

I have a feeling that my gear will enable me to produce Crisp HD content but I am unsure if my settings are correct to attain that goal. Here then is my story:
    - I am shooting with a Sony HDR-HC3 handycam- I have the record format set to "HDV 1080i"
    - I am importing into FCP - my settings are thus:
    • sequence preset: HDV 1080i60
    • capture preset: HDV
    • device control preset: Sony HDV Firewire
    • Video Playback: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main
How do these settings look? Crisp?
    Two more questions:
    - When building a DVD in DVDSP what should my settings be to ensure the most crisp output?
    - What about Motion?
    Thanks for the assist.

Sorry, I'm not sure what "crisp" means. Does it mean sharply focused, white balanced and well lit material exposed using a camera solidly mounted to a tripod with all camera moves (pans, dollys, zooms) carefully and thoughtfully controlled? If so, I suppose your camera can do that, but much more depends on the person controlling the camera.
Seriously, all that happens when you transfer your material to FCP is a simple data transfer. If your capture codec is what you recorded (HDV), your images will be exactly as recorded - good, bad or indifferent.
The only real subtlety here is HDV is a pain for your computer to edit. It's long GOP format requires a great deal of processing power to adequately maneuver through the files. For that reason, many suggest converting on capture to a ProRes codec. The alternative is to capture as HDV but use ProRes as the sequence compressor.
A desktop cinema preview is not the image. It's a proxy - a video image converted to computer world to give you an indication of the material. If you want to see what the images really look like you'll need a card/output box capable to sending an HDTV signal to a reasonable monitor - Panasonic plasmas are a good choice.
For burning a DVD, you'll need to use Compressor to turn it into DV material. Much of your visual quality will be lost. That's what happens when you downrez an image. If maintaining an HD playback is important to you, start reading up on the world of pain that is Blu-Ray.
For motion, simply match your FCP settings.
    Have fun!

  • Useful for monitoring HDV in Final Cut Pro?

Here is a new blackmagic card for HD. Seems like this could be a cheaper way to monitor my FCP timeline. I normally edit HDV shows either natively of as AIC compressed. But I have to monitor it through the "desktop cinema preview" feature which doesn't show interlacing. So I don't really see the true picture I'm editing. This new card would seem to allow me to monitor on a modern consumer TV with HDMI input.
To good to be true?? Probably. What does anyone think?
    http://blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/
    Paul

It's made for capturing other than HDV directly from camera in a live situation... not tape. Once captured as something else, it can be used to send the HDMI to a consumer HD set. Once on tape though, it's HDV all the way. This thing is an odd duck piece of gear used for special setups.... it's not what you need.
What you need is a Matrox MXO, or capture card that will convert the HDV to uncompressed HD or SD for monitoring...

  • Exporting 16:9 footage to iDVD?

I have recently just bought FCEHD and have created a 5 minute movie. I used to use iMovie and think that it was definitely worth upgrading other than the steep learning curve.
When I imported footage into iMovie it would recognise that my footage was in 16:9 format, however, it would seem that FCE does not. I changed the settings in FCE to PAL Anarmorphic and now the canvas shows as Anamorphic...all good so far! When I capture my footage a window appears showing me the footage I am capturing but shows it in 4:3, which I thought was a little odd, but when I drag my clips to the timeline it does show as anamorphic, does anyone know why this might be? That's not my main question by the way!)
Now, when I view my lovely edited video in FCE as the desktop cinema preview, all is fine and dandy, it shows in 16:9. So now it's time for me to export to Quicktime so I am able to drag the file into iDVD to create my DVD. It exports my movie, and as soon as I drag it into iDVD...there it is but in 4:3 format....please can someone help me as I think I'm going around the bend!
Oh, and just one last question, is it possible to create 16:9 titles and effects using Livetype, I can't seem to be able to do this?
    Thank in advance.

Unfortunately FCE does not set the anamorphic flag so the media is not recognized as 16:9 by iDVD. There is a (free) program called "anamorphicizer" which will take care of the probem, but you will also need Quicktime Pro. Search iDVD forum for "anamorphicizer".

  • Can't record from timeline.

Running latest ver of FCP Studio universal binaries edition & need to do a crash record from the timeline back onto deck for a guide tape for director to time his narration/commentary. Project is in HDV 1080i 25fps (work in UK)and I've had a huge headache the past few days trying to Print to Video too. Our deck is Sony HRV-M15E. This is what I've been doing so far -
I set playback to Desktop cinema preview, View>all external frames, I press rec on deck, then Mark>play In to Out but each time I am just recording black. I've tried setting device control to both Sony 1080i firewire and SOny HDV firewire, but still no joy...My project A/V settings have all been HDV 1080i firewire (capture has been fine) but I finally got Print to Video to work today by changing device control to Sony HDV (which is a separate option). It took about an hour to conform a 22min sequence with only a few filters (all slo-mo) and all rendered & audio mixed down. Also I set the quality to low & it still took this long! Is this normal?? (First time working with this HDV codec). Anyway, I just want to knock off QUICK!!! lo-fi copies of programmes so the director can time his commentaries and recording directly off the timeline is what I need. Judging by my searches on this forum on HDV PTV probs I guess I'm not alone on this. Advice much appreciated, Alex.

There is no way to just knock this off, quick...without a capture card. That will allow you to monitor your timeline in RT out to a deck. If you have the footage as Native HDV, and you are recording to an HDV camera or deck, the ONLY option you have is to PRINT TO VIDEO...and wait for the footage to conform. No way around that.
And you need to set playback to FIREWIRE, not DIGITAL CINEMA PREVIEW. DCP sends a signal to your MONITOR, not deck.
If you had a Matrox MXO, you could output simply by pressing record on the deck and play in the timeline. The quality wouldn't be FULL rez...for that you'd need to still conform (so Matrox tells me), but it will be pretty darn good.
Sorry man....HDV is a beast to deal with.

  • Problem with Digital Cinema Desktop Preview on Macbook Pro

I hava a Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. I would like to use a connected 24"-Display for preview of my HD-Material (ProRes and HDV). Unfortunately I am not getting my Macbook Pro to playback all frames. Whend Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is activated, there are only still frames displayed. No smooth playing back neither in the canvas window nor the 24" display. I have External Video -> All Frames checked.
Does the Macbook Pro 2.2 not meet the specs for this feature?
Or is it a problem with Leopard? Is anyone with Tiger able using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview with succes?
    Regards,
    Joerg

So are you saying that the DVI output on my MacBook Pro IS true HD resolution and not a proxy like the canvas?
What I am saying is that the video feed coming out of the DVI port is YUV. Computer monitors take that YUV information and convert it to RGB for displaying purposes. So if you connect an Apple monitor to the DVI port, and then use that for Digital Cinema Preview, you are seeing a converted proxie image. The MXO takes the actual YUV footage and outputs that to the Apple display as YUV, and therefore presents full quality broadcast colors. And it does it pixel for pixel...the 23" display is 1920x1200, so there are thin black lines on the top and bottom.
AND the MXO software has a proc amp for adjusting color bars, and a BLUE ONLY option for proper monitor calibration. THis really is an amazing little box.
I'm using a Dell ultrasharp 20" that looks very good that way; I just didn't think it was HD.
It is, but it is a converted RGB image...and since it is 20", it isn't pixel for pixel (well, it would be for 720p, not 1080), and if it isn't pixel for pixel, then it is a converted image. Not suitable for color correction.
then using a DVI to HDMI cable I should be seeing HD from my Sony bravia also?
Yup...sure can. It will look pretty good too. But it being a consumer set, and again having a YUV>RGB converted image, it won't look as good as it could. The MXO would feed it a proper YUV signal, as would an Decklink HDP (but you need a decklink card with SDI out for that).
