No desktop icon when connected

I'm pretty new to Mac so I don't know if this is a settings issue, but I've noticed that when I connect my 32GB touch to my Macbook, no icon shows up on the desktop. When I connect my girlfriend's 8GB Nano it shows up fine. Both iPods sync and work great with the Macbook, but I thought it was odd that not icon shows up. Is this normal?

Welcome to the Mac World, mastersworded. when i got my iTouch, i too was wondering that. when i found out that since the Touch isnt hard-drive based, it wont show up. no doubt you have seen that in iTunes, under devices, in the general tab, every other iPod has an Enable Disk Mode box, the Touch is lacking of that, so no desktop icon for it!

I have installed Adobe illustrator cc 2014 and I have no desktop icons when I save my work to my desk top.  I have a white square and the file name and thats it.  What is wrong?  I have no other illustrator programs on my computer.

  • Strange behaviour of name used for desktop icon when mounting SMB shares

My iMac is joined to a Windows Active Directory domain. This works fine. User logins are setup to mount various Windows shares at login time using some custom scripts that I have written, invoked from an Applescript app that runs as a login item. Again this works very nicely. The one strange thing is as follows, and this is troublesome for me...
The sequence of commands used to perform the mount is:
    mkdir /Volumes/mountpoint
    mount -t smbfs //servername/sharename /Volumes/mountpoint
This correctly mounts the share on /Volumes/mountpoint
but the desktop icon that appears as a result is called 'sharename' not 'mountpoint'. Why is this a problem? Well consider that one has the following shares that one wants to mount:
//Server1/System (will be mounted on /Volumes/Server1System)
//Server2/System (will be mounted on //Volumes/Server2System)
what I'd like to see are two desktop icons with names 'Server1System' and 'Server2System' but in fact I end up with two icons both called 'System' with no way to tell which is which other than actually opening one of them in Finder.
    Anyone know
    (a)    Is this behaviour expected (i.e. by design)?
    (b)    Is there a way to control the name used for the desktop icon when mounting things this way?
    Thanks!

But, to invoke your app you will need to include it, otherwise you get the error above
    sometimes you call
    http://host:port/blank/page.jsp
    instead of
    http://host:port/blank/faces/page.jsp
In the last one the Faces Servlet will get your request and locate page.jsp inside the faces context. If you don't include it then you get that error

  • FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in external drive

    Hello, All:
FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in an external memory card from my Nikon camera. This also happens regardless of which USB port I plug it in to. It didn't happen when I installed Leopard two weeks ago, but happens all the time now.
Interestingly, the desktop icons (hard drives and files) DO show up when I open any software program and try to open up a file. The hard drives and files show up in the Open File windows.
    Thank you,
    Jon

THANK YOU! I've been having the same problem, and the solution you linked to worked perfectly for me. Somehow, my computer's sharing name had been deleted. Once I put that back in the file sharing preference I was able to reconnect my external drive without all Hades breaking loose.
This problem came on the heels of an aborted attempt to use a new Time Capsule (not ready for prime time) which I had to drive 50 miles to take back and replace with a new WD My Book -and I was afraid I was going to have to repeat the trip to take it back as well.

  • How do I stop Lion from moving desktop icons when I startup?

When I starup my iMac with Lion 10.7.1, the desktop icons that I have on my desktop organized in a particular order, all move to the far right of the desktop and do not stay in the same order.  How can I stop this from happening?  When I shut down, I uncheck the box open all windows when restarting, and I have unchecked the open application windows in the general section of system preferences.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Stopping Desktop ICON when Updating reader

Every time I Update Reader, it installs a desktop icon for reader.  There doesn't appear to be an option to avoid that.  I must drag it to the Recycle Bin every time and that is annoying.  If I allowed every application on my computer to put an icon on the desktop, I'd need to scroll the desktop to find all of them.  That would make the desktop less than useful.  So could someone get to Adobe and suggest that they stop automatically putting an icon to reader on my desktop each time they release an upgrade?  Besides, when does anyone ever launch the reader that way?  I always double-click a PDF file and the reader opens.  Who needs the icon?
Another issue is the installation of scripts (or apps) that run at startup.  Again, if every program on my PC did that, I could go buy my groceries while the computer was booting.  Fortunately, I have a program that watches for those startup applications and gives the option to allow or disallow the registry change.  I usually disallow them for the reason stated.  Unless these startup routines are absolutely essential in order for Adobe Reader to run, they should be made optional.  I only have 1.5 GB of RAM and that could get filled just with resident apps loaded at boot time.  As it is, over half of that memory space is gone by the time the operating system is fully loaded, including the various resident programs loaded by each of my applications.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to stop this gluttony?

  • How does Adobe create a desktop icon when I open a web pdf document, and how can I get it to stop?

I am finding a host of pdf file icons cluttering up the desktop when I exit the Web after researching a topic. I have saved some files with the 'save as' feature, but there is nothing else I have done.
I have looked through the usual properties, options looking for clues for this automatic program, to choose a different one... and have yet to find anything indicating this program or process.
How is this happening and how can I stop it?
    Thank you!

Thanks for your interest in helping- This system has Firefox (whatever is recent) , Windows 7 Professional, Adobe Reader XI.
While on the Web, I have opened, perused, then saved docs to file using 'save as' option in the browser; and on closing the browser, I see numbers of pdf shortcuts on the desktop.
Also, this kind of thing has occurred inconsistently, so there has been nothing "usual" in my actions to which I can attribute these icons.
Sorry - I delete them and clean out the recycle bin, or I'd be able to tell you whether these were shortcuts or the actual files. I'm trying to resurrect the image in my mind, and I believe they may have been the docs, not simply shortcuts...
    Thank you for your time!

  • Missing Desktop Icon when Hiding Dock

    Hello
Has anyone experienced the HD icon on the desktop going missing when hiding the dock?
I’ve noticed that when I hide the dock for some reason my ‘System HD’ disappears. It doesn’t return when unhiding the dock either. However if I then go and arrange by Kind it reappears. I can still see the drive using Finder.
I am running the current version of OSX.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

  • Desktop Icon not connecting

Whilst uploading a largish document, displayed the guide to
look to see if there is anyway to delete an email address from the
share with list. Could NOT find a method!!!
On trying to return to "My Files" nothing happened. Try most
things on the window to see if any may stimulate it into action,
ended up pressing the "widget" button in the control box area. It
    all disappeared.
Got back in via the web site with Firefox.

    Hello Jmacf,
Thanks for posting to the Acrobat.com forums!
In Buzzword, addresses will stay in the list of people to
share with, as long as there is a document in common. Users can be
added/removed from this list as needed.
Currently, the Share’s address list just continues to
build and there is no way currently to delete someone from the
list. Your best bet here if really needing to not allow a user
access to a particular doc, would be to turn the sharing privileges
    completely to "no access".
This is a topic under some discussion for future
    releases...stay tuned!!
As for the second issue you're seeing, with the AIR window
disappearing, it sounds like you're using a screen resolution of
    1024x768.
Currently the AIR widget default location at which these
widgets get placed is outside the viewable area of the display in
1024 usually. This issue has been fixed but we'll have to wait for
the next release of the AIR app!
In the meantime, the workaround is to temporarily increase
the screen resolution for the display, which will allow you to view
the minimized widget/buttons again and then drag those buttons into
    the screen display.
    Thanks!
    Pete

  • Application minimized when launching from the JavaWebstart desktop icon

    Hi All,
I created a desktop icon when I was prompted to thru JavaWebStart.
Now, whenever I launch my application by double-clicking on the icon, it launches with the window minimized.
I have to d-click on the windows taskbar to maximize it.
Is there a way to launch the application with the maximized window.
Maybe some property to be set in the JNLP file.
Please let me know if anyone knows about it
    Thanks
    Urvashi

O sure...I can do that if i am launching the application on a single monitor. And this does work if i have only 1 monitor. But in case of multi-monitors, this does not work.
Thats why I was looking for more like property to be set.

  • Custom ipod desktop icon?

Is it possible for me to give my ipod (new 160g classic) a custom desktop icon when I plug it in to my computer? Or am I stuck forever with it showing up as a black ipod?
For instance, if I named my ipod Spiderman, is there some way I can grab a jpg of Spiderman and assign it to my ipod so that jpg pops on my desktop as opposed to the good ol' ipod icon?

The Mac OS X operating system queries the iPod for it's style, as far as I know it will only show the default icon for that iPod and no real way to change the appearance.
Therefore the icon you see is the one that resembles your iPod, which must be a black classic. As my silver classic shows up as that, and my orange nano is equally the equivilant of the device.
Unfortunatley I'm not sure how or where it gets them. Etiher OS X is storing it, or its on the device and the OS X Operating system and iTunes query it.
Not quite the answer you were looking for, but thought I'd add this.

  • Question about desktop icons

Hi, My question is what are the settings that need to be changed to get rid of the icon menu that appears around desktop icons when your cursor is over the icon? The feature I'm refering to comes up around the icon and has a button to resize the icon a button to rotate the icon a button to close the icon and one to give the prperties. I have several different distro that use kde4.2 or 4.3 and all have this disabled by default. At this point the only distro I have with this annoyance on the desktop is Arch. I tried to google this question but without knowing the proper term for this "feature" I was unable to find an answer. I hope I have descibed it well enough here that someone can tell me how to disable this great annoyance.

Right click the desktop and select "lock widgets"

  • HT204266 App store icon dissappeared from screen on ipad2, also cannot download or manage my apps in itunes when connected to my desktop

App store icon dissappeared from screen on ipad2, also cannot download or manage my apps in itunes when connected to my desktop. Need help!!

For the App Store icon check Settings>General>Restrictions. You may have restricted the installing of apps and the icon will disappear.
If that's not it, swipe from screen to screen as you may have moved the icon.
You can also reset the home screen layout and the icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.
More information is needed about the apps not syncing or downloading. Are you signed into the same ID on the iPad as your are using in iTunes on your computer and are you talking about iTunes on the computer being the problem?
