No desktop visible after recent kdemod/xorg upgrade

Hello,
After the recent upgrade (which included kdemod packages for 4.3.3 and the new xorg 1.7.1.1) , i no longer have visible desktop(s) - by which i mean i can't see any desktop icons or wallpaper (see below). If i look in system settings or in the right-click menu of the desktop pager widget; i see that i have four desktops configured, but i can't get to the desktop properties since there's nothing to right click on... am a bit stumped.
Regards,
/t

I upgraded 2 PCs and have suffered similar problems.
PC
Unable to see PCI Wireless Card
Does not start NETWORK daemon
LAPTOP
Broadcom Wireless Card does not work using NDISWRAPPER
NETWORK daemon starts, but with errors
I think the problem here is either with wpa_supplicant or NDISWRAPPER
I am not sure exactly why these problems have come up following the recent upgrade.  I need to find out how to roll-back to the old settings!!!!

  • [SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6

Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...

Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
    plasmapkg -l
If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
    plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
    Hi all,
I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got  "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
    plasmapkg -l
in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:
    [encho@x~]$ plasmapkg -l
plasmapkg(1986)/libplasma Plasma::PackageStructurePrivate::createPackageMetadata: No metadata file in the package, expected it at: "/home/encho//metadata.desktop"

  • Curve 8330 will not sync with desktop manager after 4.5 OS upgrade

Last time I connected to the desktop manager, it asked me to upgrade to 4.5. I thought, why not? So I did. Since then, I can no longer use the Google Sync for calendar and contacts as it stopped working immedately afterwards.
I realized I need to get my contacts updated on my phone, and my calendar corrected so I tried to sync to the desktop.
The phone is no longer being recognized by the system. This is since the updated. I have downloaded the USB / Modem drivers again but haven't installed / reinstalled them yet.
I was hoping it was maybe a simple fix?
I'm running Win XP Professional SP 3. I am using 4.7 of the Desktop manager. (Worked fine before OS upgrade)
If I haven't given enough details to help, please let me know.
    Thanks!

natattack06 yes it should also help you as well.... basically any 5xx error
gallhiser you should still try repairing yours, might be able to sell it and make back some money

I have tried to disable KMS, and tried further to disable Compiz, to no avail. Every time I log into Xorg, I either get a black screen with nothing showing (I can move the cursor, though), or sometimes I can see the wallpaper. When I do see the wallpaper, however, Xorg eventually freezes. When I do not see the wallpaper, nothing happens.
Anyway, if you need any more information, tell me, I'll tell it.

    @rocking turtle
I just uninstalled xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard. I had already configured my input devices to work with xf86-input-evdev.
The login process went a little further than usual (gnome-panel loaded) but then Xorg crashed and I was forced back to GDM.

I'm posting my rc.conf, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the interesting stuff you wanted from everyting.log:
The intereting stuff in everything.log seems to point at libdrm, and my stupid ATI card.

Thank you for your replies. I can confirm that removing gnome-weather app "solves" the issue even with the very latest updates. It seems in fact to be the line DBusActivatable=true in the .desktop entry that causes this bug as it is explained on http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/ … YqAEh0yuaA.

  • [SOLVED] Desktop Weird After KDE 4.9 Upgrade

I really wish I could have come up with a more descriptive title for this post, but I don't really know what to call what's going on. I don't even know how to explain it, so I'll let a screenshot do the talking.
This is what my desktop looks like after the upgrade.

I wish I had a helpful answer for you. Did you delete the .kde4 folder after the upgrade? Of course then you would lose your customizations but it's a common thing after a major upgrade in KDE I think.
Honestly I never deleted anything though and the upgrade seems to have gone really smoothly, and I have quite a few customizations (which is why I risked trying it without deleting the config folders)
That used to be the case where you needed to delete the .kde4 folder when upgrading, but the last four major releases didn't require that for me. I'd rather not delete that folder if I don' t have to.
The problem is on my desktop. My laptop was smooth. I used the same image for both, but the only real difference is that my desktop uses dual monitors. Maybe 4.9 doesn't like that anymore?

  • Desktop visible after resume (from suspend) and before screen is locke

My desktop becomes visible for brief period (<1s) when the system resumes from suspended state. My desktop env. is XFCE4, it happens with both xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver (also with slimlock and i3lock), therefore I think it's not locker dependent. It's a major security flaw because sensitive information may be exposed (not just porn). Using both XFCE provided locking facilities (suspend/resume lock options in Power Manager and Session settings), and systemd suspend/resume hooks yields same result. I remember back then when I was using Gnome, I haven't had this issues. Does anyone have any idea how to prevent this desktop expose?

    Have you tried this --> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pm … or_suspend ?

  • I have Firefox 3.6.10, desktop, Vista. Recently tried to upgrade to 3.6.11 and was told there was an error that could not be corrected and I must download the entire Firefox. How?

I've never had a problem with Firefox before (although I've had trouble with flash player). When I was notified a few days ago that the upgrade to 3.6.11 was available I downloaded it, or thought I did. Now I recall seeing a message several times of an unknown software error, but I didn't copy down the error number, didn't know what software had the problem, and ignored it because I wasn't having any problem that I was aware of. Then I received a message to upgrade to 3.6.11 again, and when I did, it stopped the upgrade at 95% and said "The update could not be installed (patch apply failed). You can update Firefox manually by visiting this link and downloading the latest version: http.www.firefox.com". This works to 95% and then gets a message saying "access denied". I dread the thought of uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. If so, will everything be lost?

Since it is affecting all your devices also, try going to the e-mail web site and seeing if you can log in there. Who is the e-mail provider?
Try deleting the pass word from Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.
If that doesn't work, try deleting and adding back the e-mail account.

  • 2 problems left 2 fix after xorg upgrade

    hi,
    im sure everyone is sick of the questions on here after the xorg upgrade, but I have 2 more I can't find answers to;
1/. when i try to use Eterm, it is always on top of every other application, but is never in focus! to use it, i am having to type commands into mousepad, then paste them with the mouse wheel into Eterm. I dont use any decoration on Eterm either, so with it not ever being in focus, keyboard shortcuts dont close it, so to close it, i have to write 'ps -ax' into mousepad, copy & paste with the wheel back into Eterm, find the PID, then type 'kill <PID>' into mousepad, then again copy & paste with the wheel back into Eterm!
2/. when X starts up, i have openbox, xcompmgr, stalonetray and tint2 autostart through my ~/.xinitrc, however, stalonetray is not visible and there are no shadows around either untill i have dragged another application over where they should be!
just so you know, i have disabled hotplugging in my xorg untill i have time to set it up properly!
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
    thanks

ok, i have been trying to fix my Eterm first. Firstly i run Eterm with -x argument, which is jus ment to open it with no decoration, however, after this update, it seems to now run Eterm with no decoration, unfocused, and always on top!
if I run Eterm without the -x argument, its fine! I think openbox can do apps without decoration or borders, so i will have a play with that!
with regards to xcompmgr, and not starting up quite right, i will play with xcompmgr & xorg.conf and post back any success / failure i have!

My card is mobility radeon hd 5700, I'm running on x86_64 system. I'm using aticonfig generated xorg.conf. I will provide any other information if needed.
    I've tried:
    - to downgrade to catalyst 12.8 and xorg 1.12 (screen just freezes after trying to get to X, only poweroff button works (system catches the signal and shuts down softly - no errors in Xorg.0.log))
    - to use catalyst-total 13.1 / catalyst-generator 13.1 (Xorg.0.log says something about *not* compatible module - i can try it again and give you the whole log, it is probably another problem)
    - to use open-source drivers (poor performance, overheating)
    - to check nomodeset option (present at all kernel images in generated grub.cfg)
Unfortunately, I could not find any similar issue solved in past few days...

Downgrading kernel to 3.7.4 actually worked for catalyst 13.1. Anyone knows what could be wrong for linux 3.7.5?
Edit: catalyst-test 13.2 beta works with linux 3.7.4.

  • Time Machine Backups after recent upgrade to Mountain Lion

Basically to keep a long story short - i need to take my computer in for repair tomorrow. I recently did an upgrade to Mountain Lion a day or two ago. I haven't done a Time Machine backup until today (a couple days after i upgraded to Mountain Lion) because i wanted to make sure that my previous TM backup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) was the most up to date and best update that i could revert back to if i had any issues with Mountain Lion, or any application compatibility, etc etc.
I don't have any broken applications and it seems like Mountain Lion is running better than Snow Leopard. However, as i said - i'm taking my computer in for repair tomorrow, i would like to know that i have the most up to date Time Machine backup with the new Mountain Lion so that when i restore it back from my Time Machine backup after i get it back from repair, i won't have any issues with the migration, which could potentially lead me into more technicalities.
I have a 500GB Harddrive, with about 70GB left of free space....I did the initial backup prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, and it upgraded 400+GB of info, now, since Mountain Lion - the first backup with Mountain Lion initially said 46GB - then it went down to 14GB by the time it was all said and done....so what exactly did it back up?
Did it back up all the necessary files to keep Mountain Lion running smoothly when i restore it back to the way it was after i get it back? Did it not back everything up that it needs to? Is it safe to erase my internal drive and do a clean installation so i can take it in, and not worry about not being able to migrate things back over or applications not working correctly?
When i get it back, i presume it will come with Mountain Lion back on it and i can just boot up into the Recovery Disk and restore it from a Time Machine backup that way, correct?
    Thanks for the help.
    - Jason

I received the same error and experienced the same issue that you have described but after performing a Time Capsule soft reset and then toggling the TM Off and then back On I was able issue a backup now and see my previous backups.
Here is the link to where I posted my fix; https://discussions.apple.com/message/19069543#19069543. Someone else had success using a different method. The only comment / complaint that I have since the ML OS X upgrade is that TM now takes at least 20 to 30 seconds before I can click/select a backup.
    I hope this helps.

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • Xserver crashes intermittently after a recent (yesterday?) upgrade

I am running arch stable on thinkpad x61s, with
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
Since yesterday or, so my Xserver crashes every half an hour or so, usually when I do something with keyboard.  I guess that this means that there is some problem with the keyboard driver, or with the graphics driver (as whenever I do something with keyboard, stuff is drawn/redrawn usually).
I believe I have started sufferring from this problem a day or two ago, after a series of upgrades to xorg related packages.  Can anybody give me some hints how to debug it ?  Are there any log files I should check first? This makes my machine essentially unusable.
Last edited by wazow (2009-05-01 20:03:55)

I am using the intel driver:
    Driver "intel"
    VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    EndSection
thanks a lot - then I know what is the reason, and will keep an eye on this.  Perhaps I should revert. Today no crash has happened, though.  Let me see how this develops.  At least I am not giving any presentations in this laptop within a week or so.
