No Destination Volume; Disk Utility problems too!

I have an Imac G5. I was having problems with my old OS (panther)--basically it was corrupted and kept crashing and then wouldn't even load. So I ran out and bought Tiger (as I had lost my original Panther install CD, I figured I might as well upgrade since I was doling out the cash for the software).
I did an archive install so that I could rescue my music from the old harddrive, which worked. Then I tried to trash the "previous system" folder but the computer froze each time I tried to empty the trash. I figured I'd better re-install Tiger (this time doing an erase install), since applications were running kind of slowly and I didn't want the stuff on the old software to corrupt my nice new Tiger.
In re-installing Tiger, however, the system seemed to crash. I re-booted the computer and now the installer doesn't recognize my hard drive--there aren't any icons to choose in the destination volume section.
I went into disk utility and ran first aid on what I assume is the harddrive (something which says 74.5GB and then some numbers). The error message I got was: "the underlying task reported failure on exit." From reading some other posts in this forum, this sounds like quite a bad thing. I tried to run techtools delux, but the computer didn't load it (not sure if it is the appropriate version for tiger anyway, since the version isn't listed on the cd or anywhere in my applecare literature).
Ah, she should zero out her harddrive, you say. Well, here's what I've done: I made a partition (sucessfully, I think) and tried to zero out the new disk (which, for some reason is called diskos3). Afterwards the installer should recognize my harddrive, right?
Wrong! Turns out the disk can't be erased due to the same error message as before: "the underlying task reported failure on exit."
Okay, that's the end of my sad, sorry tale. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

You probably will. It's possible that it became unplugged, in which case it needs to be plugged in again.

  • RAID 5 and Disk utility problems - wrong volume size for formatting

    Hi ..
I seem to have an odd problem with setting up our new RAID 5 solution. We just bought the SR6600 with seperately bought Western Digital 750Gb servergrade SATA disks.
Through the console I configured the RAID set to be RAID5 with a total capacity of 2750Gb and with a volumeset of 3000Gb (4 discs capacity and 1 disc parity).
    Here's the problem:
When I'm trying to format the new volume for HFS+ usage, I open Disk Utility and it shows the volume, but the capacity is only 750Gb - similar to 1 disc's capacity. I find this odd and I've searched all over the net for a solution and answer.
Please advice if anyone know of any management software, explaination, etc.
    Much appreciated, thanks!

I've run into the same issue with a newer PPC XServe. However, after I tried to reformat, I still only show up with the orginal size, and not the new size, even after I restarted the server and XRAID.
Did you have any success with your reformat?

  • Disk Utility Problems - Can't make image or restore

I am having difficulty in making disk images & restoring using disk utility.
Issue 1 - Making an image of a DVD for the purpose of burning a copy (non commercial)
In DU I select the DVD in the sidebar, click new image DVD/CD master & save to desktop. The progress indicator reached about halfway & I get the following message: Unable to create "image name.cdr" - input/output error.
The source DVD in in the internal optical drive.
What causes this problem & can it be fixed? Why is the image .cdr not .dmg?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
As a workaround I used DU's restore function to copy the entire DVD contents to a free (27GB) partition on an internal HDD (not system disk) in the hope that I could make an image fron there. As soon as I clicked on restore both the DVD & target drive unmounted. After the progress bar reached 100% I got the following error message: Restore Failure. An error (5) occurred while copying. Input/output error
However if mounted in DU the partition has been renamed to the DVD name & the contents seem to be the same as the DVD.
    What is error 5?
I then created an image from this partition using DVD/CD-R master format which worked OK but created a 27GB image - too large to burn!
How can I make the image small enough to fit on a DVD-R?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
    Is this normal DU behaviour??
Once I get this right I plan to used DU to backup to an external HDD (I'm in the process of recovering from a drive failure and although I have most of my data back through partial backups & recovery like many before me I'm going to have better backups from now on!!)
    Any help would be apprecialted.
    Thanks in advance.

It may be the the disc after all...
I'm still having the same problem, but I also discovered that I cannot get the install disc to get past the "spinning gear" stage when trying to start up with it, so yes, it's most definitely useless! My MacBook is still under warranty so I phoned Apple, and explained the problem and everything I did to ensure it wasn't hardware related. So they're sending me new install discs. I'm not 100% convinced yet that the problem is the install disc, but we'll see...my only doubt remains from the fact that I was able to make a disc image of it on my G4. That said...
I did a hardware test (long version, and everything is reportedly fine), played dvd movies, burned cd's, installed software from discs, etc, and it seems the drive is working fine, however, it could possibly be sensitive to even the slightest smudge or scratch (the install disc has a few very slight marks on it that shouldn't be a problem, and I cleaned it thoroughly). The only other time I had a problem was when I went to rip a song from a cd to iTunes where it hung and and then failed to complete the task. (The cd itself played without issue though.) I checked it for dirt/scratches: it had a couple of barely imperceptible smudges and one shallow scratch. I cleaned it, tried it again and iTunes was able to import from it after that. This remains the only time (so far) I've had a problem with a disc besides my install disc.
I want to be able to repair disk before I install 10.5.3, and back up everything, including the install discs. My Macbook came with 10.5.2 and except for this problem, everything's been working fine.
When I get my new install discs, I'll post how that went. They should arrive within a week or so.
DrHouseTF: I checked out your thread. I've never tried to make copies of game disks via DU, but maybe it's due to copy protection measures on the disc itself?

  • DISK UTILITY PROBLEMS : unable to verify or repair disk and/or permissions

    hi all...first time poster.
i have been reading past posts for 3 hours and i am still unable to resolve these issues i am having.
it all started with a failed attempt to install an update (QB2006_R4Updater.dmg) that i downloaded for a new version of Quickbooks Pro 2006 that i just purchased. the install continuously got hung up on "Searching Macintosh HD" looking for the application.
i called quickbooks tech support and after about an hour of troubleshooting and 4-5 failed attempts to boot in safe mode...the rep told me it seemed to be a system problem.
    regarding safe mode:
when i try to boot up in safe mode...immediately after hearing the start up tone i press and hold shift until the gray apple appears then release it. the system continues to boot for about 30-45 seconds and then shuts down.
    regarding disk utility:
i have tried to verify and repair the disk permissions to no avail...i also booted from the osX 10.4.6 installer disk (i am currently running osX 10.4.7) and tried to verify and repair the disk but on every occassion it gets hung up a little less than half way through - no error message - it will just keep going until i need to reboot the system. i cant even force quite disk utility.
i have also tried removing the itunes.pkg file as well as moving itunes to the desktop followed by running disk utility...but the same results.
some other info about this system...
as well as running all of tigers bundled software...i have installed cs2, microsoft office x, suitcase fusion, windows media player and quickbooks pro 2006.
not really sure what i need to or should do...just want to get the system so i can continue to keep up with software updates and use the utilities to keep everything working properly.
thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give me.
    17" iMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

From what you've described there are several possibilities, none very encouraging:
    1. You have a motherboard problem
    2. You have bad RAM
    3. Your hard drive is failing or damaged
Given what you've described I would recommend trying this:
Boot into single-user mode by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type. When startup has completed you should see a prompt. At the prompt enter the following commands pressing return after each:
    prompt> /sbin/fsck -fy
If you do not get a return message "Filesystem OK" then repeat the above command until the "Filesystem OK" message appears. If you repeat the command more than seven times without success, then the drive cannot be repaired. To restart OS X enter:
    prompt> reboot
Download the utility TinkerTool System and use it to clear out all user and system caches, font caches, and log files.
If none of this works, then you will have to reformat the hard drive as follows:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed to install OS X. You can upgrade to the most recent version by downloading and installing the Combo Updater for the desired version level.

  • Disk Utility - problems formatting a disk

I recently purchased a Western Digital 1 Terabyte "My Book" and started having problems dumping video onto it from Final Cut. On the FCP forum somebody pointed out that I need to make sure my drive was formatted for the Mac (it wasn't).
I didn't have much data on the drive, so I just dumped it elsewhere and tried to reformat the drive to Max OS Extended (Jounaled). I think I've messed things up because I didn't know the difference between the Drive image and the Partition image. I think reformatted the Partition image (instead of the Drive image) to Mac OS and this seems to have messed things up. The Drive won't mount.
At this point the partition is formatted for Mac OS, but the drive is formatted for MS-DOS. Now I'm stuck and can't seem to fix this. When I have Disk Utility format the drive to Mac OS I get a message that says "File System Formatter Failed."
I've tried reformatting the Volume to MS-DOS to see if I can start from square one, and then my Mac can see the Drive. However, if I go back to the Drive and try to change it to Mac OS, it freaks out and sets the drive to MS-DOS and the partition to Mac OS.
I can't seem to get out of this loop. I would like to have just one partition and have everything formatted to Mac OS.
    Help?

    Do this:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
This will format the drive for OS X. Using the APM partition scheme will not allow you to create a second partition on the drive and format that partition as MSDOS. If you want to use the drive on both platforms, then you must partition the drive using MBR and format using MSDOS. This allows the drive to be used on both platforms.

  • Another  "Underlying task reported failure on exit " Disk Utility Problem

So a Problem (at least for me)
I've got an old Powerbook G3 266mhz (headless) acting as a server. It had been up for 258days, and then 2 days ago we had a lightning storm. No big deal, except the cable line got hit, flew through the line and fried my cable modem. In the process of pulling out the modem, I accidentially unplugged my 'server' Plugged it back in, think it crashed, tried again, and then nothing. Thats the story anyhow here's what I've done:
    1) managed to boot into the bootloader, did dev /hd .properties (or something like that) and it couldn't find my HD (oh boy)
    2) Got out my 10.3 Install disks, booted off them and ran disk Utility, One partition is fine, the other (my primariy) is showing up as disk0s9 instead of 'Nitrogen' not mounting, and when I 'repair disk' it starts okay, and then does this:
    -Checking catalog file
    -<red>Invalid Key Length</red>
    -<red>Volume Check Failed</red>
-<red>Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)</red>
    3) I checked through the forums and the mentioned 10 different possible reasons for the 'underlying task' error, 'Invalid key length' was not among them.
I do have data on there I want to try to get off, (currently I am downloading ubuntu for PPC to see if I can boot off that, access the drive, and dump it to a networked drive.) As this is an old machine I don't actually have any computers with SCSI connections etc.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated
    Thanks
G3 Powerbook 266   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   (missing powerbook screen (it fell off long time ago)

For what its worth, I went and purchased a copy of Disk Warrior, and was able to get it mostly cleared up Here is what I did do.
-Tried to install Mac OSX 10.3 on the second partition: Said my mac was unable to install 10.3. Which is funny because I had 10.3.9 running on this computer.
-Installed Mac OS 9 on the second paritition. This worked though sometimes had issues on booting.
-Purchased DiskWarrior (download version): Tried to create 10.3 Startup disk, but for some reason couldn't get it to boot from it. The computer kept booting to OS 9. So I copied over the OS 9 Diskwarrior to the second parition.
-I had to reboot in 'extensions-off' mode (hold shift after boot chime) in order to get DiskWarrior to work.
-Disk Warrior recovered and fixed many issues, So I was able to reboot from OSX on the broken drive. However there still seem to be some remaining problems. I am currently in the process of trying to remove all important data and back up so that way I can wipe the HD and reinstall.
    Hope this helps anyone else

    Well...last night immediately after I made this post...I backed everything up to a FireWire HD and more or less did what you said. Booted from the CD and ran Disk Utility and did a repair. Double checked that repair and rebooted as normal. Came up and tried to run a few things that I had noticed that would slow / bog down my machine...Now everything seems to be great.     Hi mrlou;
I seriously doubt that going back to Tiger will help unless you reformat the hard drive. Disk Utility is telling you there is a problem with the hard drive that it can't fix. You need a more powerful utility such as DiskWarrior.

I ran disk utility on tiger before i upgraded and had no issues with my drive. What's going on and how can I fix it?
I was also on hold with Apple for and hour and forty minutes. Then I got hung up on. I called back and I got the "In order to give you the help you need, you will need to speak to one of our Agents. Since none of our representatives are availble, you'll have to call us back later. Thank you for calling Apple. Goodbye." I guess I won't be getting any help there so if anyone has any infor that might help please share!

    Try this
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    *fsck -fy*
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - _run the command again and keep doing so_ (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • Relocating Masters & Disk utility problem

As part of my back-up strategy I use Disk Utility to create a disk image, move the project masters onto it, then burn the image onto DVD. Last night I did this for 3 DVD's with no problem, then on the next when I went to Disk Utility and clicked on "New Image" the usual drop down box didn't appear, instead a "Save" dialogue box opened and the size options for DVD's didn't show (all the others did). Despite restarting and then letting it sleep overnight the problem still persists. Does anyone know how to get the DVD size options back?

Abe is correct. You should not attempt to repair a
disk or permissions using Disk Utility from a
different version of the operating system. This will
be a major problem related to Tiger because Tiger
    changed the filesystem.
CCC also clones links or aliases from one drive to
another. These links tie back to the cloned system,
which in your case resides on another volume. The
repair cannot work because to do so requires
unmounting the startup volume. You cannot unmount a
    startup volume.
Hmmm - are you sure about this? - It seems like a weird function - especially if you're planning to delete the source drive after cloning... - then would not all your links be broken?
Well - it looks as though you are correct - however I thought " repair disk" was a basic process compared to the more complex " repair permissions " - I guess I will have to boot-up from the Panther disk to repair that disk....
*Question: does the disk utility restore function also clone links/aliases like CCC does? - It seems like a weird function - especially if you're planning to delete the source drive after cloning... - then would not all your links be broken?

  • Disk Utility problems - cannot fix...

    Hi there,
Had a few problems on my computer, so I ran the regular checks. Virusbarrier X, ClamXav, everything in Tech Tool Pro 4, CRON scripts (and a few other things in Onyx), Repair Permissions, and Disk Utility Drive Checks.
Most of this was done in Safe Mode or whilst booted from tech Tool Pro disc.
Everything is good now... except this:
When I run disk utility when the computer is running normally and I am logged into my account, no problems show up.
However when I run it from the OSX Install disc the following errors come up (for my 2 drives):
    1. Invalid leaf record count (it should be 5 instead of 2660)
    2. Invalid leaf record count (it should be 19 instead of 2907)
Whats that all about then and how can I fix it?
    Thanks

    Have you done this?
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Disk Utility Problems

Just tried to open Disk Utility and after appearing in the Dock, bringing up the window and saying "Gathering Disk Information..." it crashes.  Tried to open it several times, and the same thing happened each time.  The crash report is below:
(Possibly relevant, a day or two ago, I was creating an encrypted disk image, and it started making the image before I had entered the password, which led to some kind of creation error.)

Try removing com.apple.DiskUtility.plist in your Preferences.
In the finder Go menu, Go To Folder, type (or copy/paste) ~/Library/Prerferences and click the Go button.  Then drag com.apple.DiskUtility.plist out of the Preferences folder and relaunch DU to see if it still crashes.
By the way, have you simply tried rebooting?

That is a picture of what disk utility does when I try to Verify Disk. I don't know why it does that and google hasn't been kind to me on this one.
I do know its new since the 10.4.3 update because it works off my install DVD without a hitch.

I just ran the 'verify disk' and found a little surprise...

    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.

Edit: Ok the 'repair disk' button is greyed out and not letting me select this option. Anybody have suggestions as to how I can repair the volume?
Edit2: Ok, I repaired permissions and ran verify disk again. Looks like it's all good.
