No detection by Windows explorer or iTunes

I can't get iTunes or Windows (my computer) to see my iPod Shuffle.. any ideas why?? I have tried for a while now to get it to detech it without luck. Device Manager sees it, but that is it! and i can briefly get Yamipod to see it, but I want to use iTunes. I previously put the songs on the iPod currently off of another system and the library keeps wanting to erase and sync with it... but I hit cancel because I don't want to sync it with this library but instead just bring it up and add songs to it.

Have you tried these steps yet?

  • Can't drag and drop from Windows Explorer into iTunes 10

HI. I recently upgraded to iTunes 10 and now, it won't let me drag and drop files from Windows explorer into iTunes. Is there a setting I need to turn on to get this to work again? I am running Vista.

I might be wrong, but ...
I know Microsoft Office 2011 is Mountain Lion compatible.  In fact, Microsoft released updates to it right around the time of Mountain Lion's release to assure compatibility.
I do not believe Microsoft Office 2008 is Mountain Lion compatible.

  • Zen Touch not detected by Windows Explorer though recognised by Windows Media Pla

I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem to this:
I am running Windows ME and my son has just received the player for his birthday.</LI>
Unfortunately the CD that came with the player caused this computer (and another) to lock-up so faulty CD assumed.</LI>
    Loaded drivers from internet.</LI>
Camera and memory sticks all recognised by Windows Explorer but NOT the Zen Touch.</LI>
Now the surprise the Zen Touch IS recognised by Windows Media Player and my son can transfer files using that - but it is a VERY slow way of loading files and we would much prefer to use Windows Explorer.</LI>
Anyone any suggestions as to how to make Windows Explorer detect the Zen Touch?

The Touch is only recognised through Windows Explorer by virtue of installing Nomad Explorer.
Certainly make sure you have the latest version of this from the downloads page, you mentioned you have the latest drivers already.

  • Cannot see files in Windows Explorer, but iTunes still plays 'em

    hi all,
I have all my music files on an external hard drive. Up until this morning, I could browse the files on the external drive using Windows Explorer. Now the iTunes Music folder appears empty when I click on it, and even says 0kbs when I right-click Properties.
But ... iTunes still plays the files fine, and when I right-click Get Info in iTunes, it gives me the correct file path to my external hard drive. When I right-click Show Song in Windows Explorer, it shows me the correct file, yet when I click back up on the root iTunes Music folder, it still shows up empty!
Any clues? This is most frustrating, as I just got a new laptop and am trying to get my iTunes library back on there.
    thanks

    Sorry for the double post.
But i should also add that when i go to Edit Preferences and go to iPod and change anything i want to change. Once the ipod is disconnected, it doesnt save and it all goes back to the normal settings.
    Thanks again.

  • Video that appears in iTunes but not Windows Explorer crashing iTunes

I added some videos to my iTunes library today, and I tried to sync my iPod. When I connect it, I get the "Updating iPod, do not disconnect" message, but it doesn't say exactly what it's transferring. After a little while, I get the notification that iTunes is crashing and the option to send an error report.
I updated iTunes to 6.0.3 earlier today, and updated my iPod to see if that would fix anything. When it didn't, I checked to see if there was something wrong with any of the videos. I tried deleting the videos, until iTunes crashed again. Whenever I try to delete, or play, or right-click this video, it crashes. I thought that maybe there was a problem with a video, so deleting it through Windows Explorer might have some effect, so I went to where it would be stored, and . . . it wasn't there.
I know that a file being listed in the library but not actually stored in Windows would normally just result in the exclamation-point-in-a-circle icon, but could this be what's causing iTunes to crash? Is there a way to delete something from the iTunes library without actually going through iTunes?

Okay, I managed to fix it after uninstalling iTunes and installing an old version . . . but of course, after I had everything up and working again, I ended up causing it to happen again. The upside of that is that I now know how it happened and an easier way to fix it.
The corruption of the file occured when trying to type in an artist on a file whose tag I had modified with iPod TVShow . . . it said "Editting tag", then crashed for the first time, and crashed again whenever I tried to edit that. Though, I found that that can be fixed just by deleting the movie file first through Windows Explorer, and then through iTunes (I didn't see it in Windows Explorer originally because I didn't realize that the re-labeling of the artist never went through, so I looked in the wrong folder, and I wasn't able to use Show Song File in order to see where it was, what with the constant crashing). Hopefully that'll help if anybody else ends up with the same problem.

Drag the music from the iTunes media Folder into iTunes.

  • IPOD detected by Windows but NOT iTunes – possible solution

I have a new 30GB Video IPOD with an AMD PC running Windows XP SP2 and like many others posting on this site, my iTunes stopped recognizing my IPOD. ITunes did work correctly immediately after my initial software installation and I was able to sync some music, but it failed thereafter and I was unable to add any more files. Like many other users, I tried all suggested fixes including the 5R’s, uninstalling and re-installing the software, changing selective start-up items using “MSCONFIG”, etc. Nothing worked – until I tried the following…
    1) Uninstall iTunes & IPOD updater software using Windows Add/Remove Software tool in the Start/Settings menu
    2) Reboot Windows
    3) Connect IPOD to USB port (Windows should detect the IPOD)
    4) Run the original IPOD CD installation disk, load the IPOD Updater software (but not iTunes …yet)
    5) The IPOD Updater software loads first, so when prompted to load iTunes, wait (you may minimize the window), go into the IPOD Updater software (Start/Programs menu) and open the IPOD Updater window by clicking on the icon. If your system works like mine, the IPOD should now be recognized and the “RESTORE” button should now be available. Don’t click the “RESTORE” button – just leave this window open (minimize the window if you wish) and go back to the iTunes install window.
    6) Continue with the installation of the iTunes software.
    7) Once installed try opening the iTunes program to see if IPOD is detected (at this point it still didn’t work for me)
    8) With the IPOD still connected, and the IPOD updater window still open, go to Add/Remove Software (Start/Settings) and click on “remove” iTunes – you’ll be prompted to “Repair” or “Remove”. Choose REPAIR. Once this process is complete, try opening iTunes again – at this point my computer now recognized the IPOD

i could do everything fine up until step 6), the installation of itunes. when i tried to, with the ipod updater window still open, it said it could not continue without closing the updater program. any suggestions?

  • Ipad not connecting to Windows 7 (not showing up in windows explorer or Itunes)on to windows 7 device manager driver

After having someone fix problems with my windows, I now cannot connect my ipad to my computer or itunes.  I get a yellow triangle with exclamation point in the device manager.  I have tried to uninstall and install, and disable and unable.  I also tried reinstalling itunes.  However, nothing has worked.  It might be a problem with the correct driver not being on the computer.  It finds Apple Mobile Device USB Driver but cannot install because "one of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time."  Any ideas?

    Hey ct1110,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. The following resource provides some great steps, some of which you may have already tried. Specifically, I recommend running through the steps in “5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed”:

  • IPhone 3G not show as Camera in windows explorer, but iTunes works?!

Every time I connect my iPhone, I get the New Found Hardware wizard which always fails to setup my device properly. The device does not show up in My Computer as a camera like it is supposed to. However, iTunes opens and syncs just fine with it. When I go to my windows hardware device manager it shows up "iPhone" but with the yellow exclamation point indicating a problem.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, and updating my chipset drivers (Nvidia nforce2). I have also tried uninstalling the iPhone device from the Hardware Device Manager window, then plugging the phone back in.
    Nothing seems to work.
    Any Ideas?

When you have pictures stored on you iPhone you'll get this message upon plugging it in to your computer. Windows is trying to access it like it would any other digital camera. Just ignore it and use iTunes.

  • Why no Expand / Collapse - Windows Explorer beats iTunes on usability.

I have a new 4Gb Nano - one of the smallest iPod offerings in memory terms. But finding albums in iTunes is a pain because I can't find a way to reduce most of the albums to a single line in the listing, and only look at the individual tracks for the one or two albums I'm dealing with at the moment. This counts double for me because the Gracenotes database keeps on giving me different titles for CDs in boxed sets. One disk might be "Beethoven Symphonies Disk 1" and the next "Symphonies of Beethoven, disk 2". So I have to scroll up and down the list to find the titles that need correcting to achieve sanity.
Am I missing something or have Apple in their wisdom decided that I want to see details for all the tracks on all the albums all of the time? On an 80Gb iPod this would drive me nuts.

OK - this does a good chunk of what I needed. But what a bizarre piece of UI design to put this so far from the other stuff that chooses the list-viewing options. A colleague of mine heard me talking about this and said that earlier verrsions of iTunes worked exactly as I'd hoped, but no more. So whenever the change was made, it baffled him as an existing iTunes user, as well as me as a new one.

  • IPod touch AND iPod classic not detected by Windows 7 or iTunes, but both are charging fine via USB.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the Apple software on my computer but that didn't help whatsoever.  Both devices are fully charged, and I have tried different cables and USB ports, but to no avail.  When I check for the driver software in my Device Manager (in various categories, but most importantly, the Universal Serial Bus controllers), it doesn't appear, so I figure that might be the basis of the problem.  Is there somewhere that I can download the driver since it's not automatically installing when I plug in the iPods?

Do the USB ports work for for other devices?

  • Ipod 160gb does not show up in itunes or in windows explorer

I bought an ipod classic a month ago and transferred my 40 gb of music from my old ipod (same model) over to it. There were no problems until yesterday all the sudden the classic decided to stop working. it plays songs but only when it feels like it and does not show up in windows explorer or itunes. i spent hours on apple looking through the troubleshooting stuff but nothing worked. All i see under my device manager is WPD Filesystem Volume Driver with a yellow box and an exclamation point. My old ipod classic connects to itunes just fine. What do i need to do to fix this? also the broken classic does charge on the computer and say "connected - eject before disconnecting". Please help.

Edit: It is actually showing up in win explorer as a Removeable Drive but if i try to click on it to browse the files it freezes completely. It still doesn't show up in itunes.

  • My iPod mini is not appearing in iTunes or windows explorer.

My iPod is not appearing in iTunes or explorer. Only when I go to hardware manager windows admits that there is something that is not installed properly. But when I start the hardware manager and put in the CD, as required by the hardware assistant it says: Hardware couldn’t be installed.
So it is not even possible to reset my iPod, because is not recognized by the iPod Updater. I had to go to another computer to reset the iPod. After that my computer is still not recognizing it. So I installed the latest version of iTunes and Updater, but it doesn’t help. I installed also the latest drivers for my computer, but it did not work. Running the iPod in disc mode doesn’t change anything, too.
The iPod is not listed under disc management so I can’t change the Drive from E to G.
I tried the inactivation of all Microsoft-services according to the protocol from the apple web page, but it did not work, even after installing the latest version of iTunes.
I've read the entire troubleshooting pages on how to fix it.
The message on the iPod mini display is always the same when I connect it: “do not disconnect” and after about 3 seconds “OK to disconnect”. But the iPod is never listed in windows explorer or iTunes. I also reseted it, when it was connected to the computer.
I completely run out ideas and I am about to send it to service.
    Can anyone help?
I use Windows XP on a Fujitsu Siemens 1437G laptop computer.

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • How can I get iTUNES library to display renamed files and folders (renamed with Windows Explorer)?

How can I get iTunes library to display the new names and organisation of tracks and albums (ie files and folders) that I have renamed and reorganised (using Windows Explorer) having previously imported them using iTunes?
(Even when I relocate "lost" tracks in iTunes (using the drop down menu facility to view in Windows explorer), although iTunes will then play the track, and knows where to find it, it refuses to display the track with its correct (new) name, or show it the correct (new) album.  That means I have lots of things called "Untitled" and "Track 01" etc, all of which have actually been renamed, but iTunes does not seem to have the capability to recognise the changes and update its library listing.  Another example - a Tchaikovsky CD with 3 major works in 13 tracks insists on displaying in iTunes as 13 tracks in one album, despite the fact that I have reorganised the tracks into 3 albums - two being Swan Lake and The Nutcracker - and renamed the individual tracks to a more useable format.)

    Thanks for your replies ckuan
I agree with Tgod that your first solution does not work.  It appears unpredictable whether the old or new file names are listed when you drag the folders into iTunes from Windows Explorer.  The folder structure is completely missing.  I reckon if you have to muck around spending days/weeks/months finding out how to fix links to a secret meta-file (obviously designed by some deep-cover microsoft worm working in the Apple!), then it's pretty obvious that almost any alternate way of doing this would be better.   Bye bye iTunes!!
Incidentally, I tried several other things that (if the software was designed intuitively) should work, but give disastrous results:
    1) when deleting the library listing in iTunes, it gives you two options - one is to remove the listings to the Recycler.  Be aware that IF you select that option, it removes not only your library listing, but also your ACTUAL MUSIC FILES to the Recycler.  Moreover, it does NOT remove the insidious secret meta-file that is what apparently keeps rewriting old names over your carefully renamed file names, and keeps totally ignoring your carefully designed folder (album) structure.  OK - not a complete disaster, as I realised and went hunting through the chaos in the Recycler to recover all my files.  No thanks to the genius who designed this brilliant feature!
    2) after deleting the library listing in iTunes, I attempted to import just the folders that I wanted.  iTunes refused to allow me to do that, and proceeded to try to import every frigging music file it could find on my whole hard drive, in apparently random fashion into the library.  Whoever thought up that doozy either never ever tried to use or market test it, or has modified their mind rather too many times with artificial substances so their brain is like muesli chop suey.
    3) oh why go on, it's too depressing ...
