No digital out signal from Optical Out

I have a Pavilion p6250f PC with a ATI Radeon HD 4200 integrated graphics card. I have it connected to my Onyo receiver through the DVI-D port to the HDMI port on my Onyo receiver. I get a message saying I need to cable the sound separately, so I am using a optical cable from the PC to the receiver, but am unable to get any sound.
I have used the Realtek menu to select Digital Out. Any ideas?

Hi,
Where are you connecting your optical cable to on the PC as you have stated?
Try SPDIF output from the PC using a coaxial cable to a digital input on the receiver. Or, use an analog cable from the back of the PC to the receiver. Then go back into the Control Panel ---Sound---> Playback Tab and set the default sound out device.

<![endif] -->Hello,
I spent over 2 weeks going over those forums and goggling around the problem I have. ?
Ever since I upgraded from Vista x86 to Vista x64 I cannot get the sound out through my digital out (flexijack) connection. I am connecting to Onkyo SR800 ( I don't think Onkyo is causing the problem since it worked before)
Here is what I tried:
. I verified the optical cable and mini-toslink adapter work.
2 I tried latest drivers from Creative site.
3. I tried older drivers ( SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_5_0004,? SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_5_0002 ?SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_5_0006)
4. I tried changing spdif out to default audio device in vista.
5. I tried changing sampling rate from 48 to 96 Hz in audio console.
6. I readjusted all volume controls in both vista and creative to the maximum.
7 I tried sending test sounds to spdif out.
8. Tried Daniel_K's support packs.
9. Some of the older drivers used to have other tab with Digital I/O checkbox, but that did not help also.
To add some background information:
My onboard audio is disabled and I have no problems outputting sound to my 2 speakers connected to line on the XFI Xtremegamer. In vista x86? I was able to output simultaneously to both my 2 crappy speakers and to my Onkyo receiver (7.). I saw that some people were able to get stereo output through optical out, but I can get a **bleep** squeak out of my onkyo from XFI.
I don't usually post on the boards, because I am able to come across a solution, but this is the first time in my life that I could find a solution. If it wasn't for the price I paid for XFI, I would probably ditched it already and went with onboard Realtek. The problem is that I know XFI sounds better, besides I already spent the money so it's not very useful outside of my computer.

<![endif] -->Jmacguire,? thanks for your advice.
It's a very interesting post, I think it should even become a sticky here as it very nicely describes how Vista passes audio to applications.
Unfortunately, that doesn't fix my problem. I tried setting my speakers to 5., and 7.. I also tried setting spdif as a default audio device, but then I get no sound? at all. ?
I went as far as configuring ffdshow filter to enable spdif pass trough. Since I don't even hear a test sound from windows in my receiver, I think that there is some option somewhere that pretty much disables any output to my flexijack.
Also a funny observation,? when I downloaded an iso image of creative officuial drivers ( from April last year I believe)? I had extra options for digital input/output in speakers tab in control panel and in creative audio console.
It seems weird that creative removed those options from newer drivers.
However, checking the checkbox by enable digital I/O did nothing for my problem.
I begin to wonder what would be the most cost effecti've solution to connect my pc to my receiver. I want to use both my computer speakers and my Onkyo receiver, and by using audio jack splitters I will loose stereo signal (if I am correct) and that's a path I do not want to take, but if flexijack will not work in vista 64, I do not have a choice.

• No audio from Optical out!

I'm using an ATV2 with HDMI going to my TV and an Optical cable going to my Pioneer receiver. I am not able to get any audio signal through the Optical out of the ATV. Dolby digital is set to "on" in the ATV and my receiver is set to accept a digital signal. I have seen some other message boards discussing this as being a common problem that may be an apple related issue. I'm just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience and figured out a way to work around it.
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't say similar issues are reported commonly, but there are enough of them on a reasonably regular basis, to be considered more than a handful. The majority of such reports appear to be resolved by making settings adjustments, on either the Apple TV or the receiver.
I'm unlikely to be familiar with your receiver, but you might want to try with 'Dolby Digital' set to off.

• How do I get a line out signal from my macpro mid-2012

I went to Preferences, Sound, Output. The only option is HEADPHONES.
I want to send music from iTunes to a sound mixing board. I can use the headphone port, but the signal is weak and poor sound quality. I used to use my iPod which works well because I have a cable that takes a line signal off the ipod port (the one you use when you are charging or communicating with the computer)
I am using a digital mixer now controled with the Mac and don't want to mess with two peripherals when working a job.
I have only recently moved from DOS/Windows machines after 30 years with them. My last Windows laptop was a Toshiba. Whenever I plugged something into the 1/8" port it would ask, "Headphones or Line Out?"

Do you have a 13" model? I believe (I could be wrong) that the 2012 13" model only supports line in, no line out. You used to be able to switch the port to in or out but I don't think that feature is available in newer models (again, I could be wrong - I don't have a 13" to test).

• Sending a DIGITAL -Stereo- Signal from Audigy to HomeCinemaReceiver - Adapter nee

Hello everybody,
I want to connect my Audigy 2 ZS to my HomeCinemaRecei'ver.
Therefor, I wanna use the digital out of the card.
But I don't want any multichannel signal, just oldschool Stereo.
(I already read the FAQs and so on, they just didn't fit my case)
This connection is only meant to be used for music, which has only 2 channels anyway.
So my question now is what of adapter plug I need for this job.
There's already a one "channel" chinch cable that goes from the
receiver to my computer. It has both male endings. (one plug each end)
One end of the adapter plug has to be a female chinch,
but how about the other one? Would a simple small jack plug be sufficiant?`
I really hope you can help me,
for I've searched all the net for weeks now,
without finding any helpful information.
Thanks and Greetings,
Matthias

There're two ways to connect it. One is through the digital output ( which is the same as the front line out on the Audigy and is a different jack on the Audigy 2 series ) or through the front line out.
In either case, you need a stereo mini-plug to phono x 2 connector adapter cable.
In the case of a digital connection, only one of the plugs will carry the signal. For analogue connections, simply plug the two phono outputs into the L/R phono inputs on yer receiver.

• Toshiba 32 XV505 optical out and sound bar

Hi guys, wonder if you can help.
I have a toshiba XV505 TV and I've just bought a Cambridge Audio TV minx sound bar, it works fine with a headphone cable from the TV but for best quality sound I wanted to use an optical out cable. But when plugging in the optical cable I get nothing, I've tried the optical cable with the DVD player and it works fine so the cable is good. Is this some type of restriction with the TV that it can't output the sound?
I can't find a setting in the menu where I'd need to enable it. Can anybody help?

The optical out option is not displayed.
nothing to do with Midi Setup, the issue is Hardware level, when hdmi is plugged there is no way to get out signal from optical out. (no red light). Even with hdmi to dvi converter.
I just bought a none official MDP to DVI adapter, hoping it works.... just paid about 8$. But I think it's a shame to make users find own solutions and spend even more money, after spendig 1000€ in a Mac mini.......
That's not the way to do things, they made a big mistake with that, no way to get optical sound, im going to try this last trick, but even if it works im totally disappointed with apple. After more than two months Late 2012 mini come out, and no solution for this.... just an update we need!!

• No signal from audigy 2zs line out j

Hey there....due to a virus, I recently had to format my dri've and reinstall XP and all my apps including software for my Audigy 2 ZS soundcard. Before the format I had my sound and video card connect to my TV to extend my PC display and audio to my home entertainment system. The external speakers were connected through the line out # jack on the rear of the sound card and I could hear everything playing just fine when my TV was on and the correct video signal line input was selected (video #2 in my case), but now I can't hear anything (video is playing back fine on the TV, just with no sound). I've checked my audio settings and I think they're correct - if there is a mute switch for any of the line out jacks in the creative audigy software or in windows' volume control panel I sure can't find it.
I'm sure its a settings thing because I didn't touch the cable connections, and I double checked to ensure they are all connected tightly/correctly as they were before the reinstall.
If anybody has any pointers, man that would be helpful....thanks!

Yup, my digital speakers are connected through the digital out jack.
Device manager shows the device working correctly - no issues or exclamation marks.
Not one ioda of hardware was moved, not one cable unplugged or any other config changed before or after the re-formatting of the hard dri've. Software o/s and applications only.
The soundblaster card properties in device manager shows no conflicts....everything is working fine, but there is a setting somewhere that is being missed I suspect; I have gone ever every option in all of the soundblaster audigy audio control software installed that came bundled with the card, checked online for latest drivers which I've got installed, and did a clean uninstall/reinstall using creative's 6 step-by-step guide. I also checked all windows xp based audio controls even though I've checked the option that enables the audigy controls to sync with the windows ones as you probably already know.
To my knowledge, there is no way to disable line out signal from this card - its there, you plug in your external and go. And with no config changes at all, no hardware changes, no cables unplugged etc. I don't know what else to do. (except email creative support which I did a few minutes ago).
Thanks Katman.

• Optical Out Drive Bay - Audigy

Hi,
Audigy ZS Platinum
Is it possible to connect a 5. Analog from the back of the audio card AND <a 5. receiver from the Optical Out from the Dri've Bay? Or will the Optical be disable?
Thanks in advance.
G.

hi,
of course it'ss possible to connect the analog out and the optical out simultaneously. the optical out won?t be switched off when you?re using the analog out first.
but please pay attention: if you want to get an encoded signal, e.g. a dolby digital signal from a dvd movie, by the optical out you have to set the option "digital bypass". in this case the dolby digital signal won?t be decoded by your audigy card and you won?t get an analog signal from the back!

• Optical Out (NO LIGHT)

I am trying to get an optical signal out of the optical out port. I have plugged in an optical cable but dont seem to have any light output at the toslink end. Does this output socket need to be enabled any where?
Thanks for your help!!
Regards Alf

The audio in and output ports are analog and digital. For analog use a standard 3.5 mm mini plug. The digital requires a fiber optic cable with a mini plug. This mini plug is .5 mm longer than the analog version so that it can touch the LED and activate it for digital sound transmission.
There is an Output pane in System Preferences>Sound. That is usually automatic if you do not have other audio devices attached through FireWire or USB.
There are also audio selections in Audio MIDI Setup in Apps/Utilities.

• Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Optical Out not working???

Hey friends,
I purchased a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe yesterday to run on Windows 7 64bit to trigger VSTi instruments. I can hear the VSTi play fine when I have headphones plugged into the soundcard but I want to send the audio sound OUT via the Optical Out into my Steinberg MR86x firewire audio card. ?
I can see the light on the optical cable but no sound seems to be being sent from the sound blaster into the steinberg card.
?Now before people start saying you cant do that, I have have been doing this for the last 3 years and it has been great apart from my RME Audio card is not compatible with Windows 7 64bit hence why I purchased the soundblaster.
I really am at a loss as to what I can try next, I have been through this forum and tried a few recommended tweaks but nothing? Am I missing something obvious here?
I am using the following drivers
Driver: v2.7.008 Windows 7 64bit
DTS Connect: for Windows 7 64bit
Also in the Audio Control Panel / SPDIF I/O all options are greyed out apart from the Digital Output tickbox, I only want to use this card for Audio as in creating music or specifically for triggering VST synths.
I would really appreciate any advice
Thanks in advance

Re: Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Optical Out not working?I have same card, same?OS?and lots of problems.
Analog outputs(control panel->sound->speakers) disappears when boot or reboot, sometimes it works week, sometimes a hours. When it works, it's works ok, but suddenly during boot,?all sounds is lost, when trying launch for example Creative Audio Control Panel this message appears: There are no supported audio device available. You need to close the application. Click OK to close the application now.
And when analog outputs disappears, no any sound via SPDIF, even it shows in notification area and control panel->sound and in device manager.
I have owned card about two months, once change card in warranty, and?several uninstall, cleaning traces, reinstall and card works for while?and?out of blue, when boot computer, no sounds at all and only way to get sounds back is driver uninstall, cleaning and reinstall.
Creative Customer Support seems to be clueless, but make Technical Support Request if problems continue. And all other too, if problems like that appears, contact to Creative, maybe they really try?to do?something abuot it and not just send instructions how to uninstall and reinstall drivers.

• Sound blaster Z with no sound from Optical S/PDIF output

Hi,
I'm trying to record music from a Denon DTR-2000 Digital Audio Tape deck. I have connected a optical S/PDIF cable from Optical Out on the DAT player to the Optical In on the sound card but I'm not hearing any sound.
I've also tried with a CD/DVD player using optical out and still no sound.
My only concern is that whilst there is a definite click when the TOSLINK cable is plugged into the CD/DVD player it doesn't seen particularly well connected in the sound card.
If I start Smart Recorder with Source as Digital-In (SoundBlaster Z) and press Analyse there is no movement in the sound level bars. Presumably there should be.
Hope you can offer some help please.

Just to clear this up. The original cable was fine but the quality of the connectors left a lot to be desired. The plugs needed to be pushed in quite forcibly.

• No sound from optical on NEW SkyHD+ box

Hi all, I've read a few posts already about this issue and I like many others cannot get surround sound from the Sky box via OPTICAL cable to my Pioneer surround sound amp system. The SkyHD+ box is brand new so was forced to buy an optical cable to link to my Pioneer AXD 7305 system. The Pioneer plays the 5.1 sound via blu ray no problem using Coaxal but as try as I may I cannot get the Sky box to deliver surround sound using optical. My set up is: Panasonic TXP42G20B TV linked to SkyHD box via HDMI cableSky box Sound Settings set to "Dolby D" for both Digital Audio AND Digital HDMISky Box connected to Pioneer AXD 7305 via NEW optical cable from OPTICAL OUT on Sky boxPioneer AXD 7305 set to "Video 1 OPTICAL input" I rang Sky Support & they just suggested the sound settings set to "Dolby D" which I have done. Please help if you can.

You may have tried it but have you set the sound settings to NORMAL. Mine is connected by optical to a soundbar and works with both settings.

• Beginning of audio cut off when using digital optical out

Hi all,
This is my first post here since switching to Mac earlier this year.
I'm having problems with the first second or so of audio being cut off when commencing playback using the Mac's digital optical out. This happens with any source of audio in a variety of different applications (e.g. video, iTunes, even system sounds for notifications and the like). I have used a mini Toslink to Toslink optical cable to connect from the Mac's audio out jack to the receiver of my digital speakers (Logitech Z906). Once playback has commenced, audio plays fine; it's just the very first second or so which is usually clipped.
The problem does NOT happen when using the built-in speakers. I've also noticed that if I unplug the cable from the receiver end (leaving it connected at the Mac end) I can see the red LED light shining the optical signal down the cable, but this goes out exactly 30 seconds after audio stops playing. If I start another audio playback within 30 seconds, there is no loss of audio at the beginning, but if I wait longer than 30 seconds (i.e. after the LED has gone out) I encounter the problems with the initial audio being clipped. I therefore suspect that this is an OS issue which is shutting down the digital optical out when audio is not actually playing (presumably to save power or something). I wouldn't have a problem with this if it actually worked properly when audio playback recommences, but it seems that there is a slight delay whilst the optical out service 'wakes up' again and this is leading to the clipped audio.
I've done some searching of the internet (and these support communities) for this problem and there seems to be little information about it. It does seem to affect a few other people though and some have resorted to third party applications or scripts which play silent audio at regular intervals to keep the optical output running permanently (e.g. SoundStay (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39833/soundstay) - no longer maintained and the download link is dead). However, these amount to a kludge at best which treat the symptoms rather than the underlying cause, which I would rather resolve.
I tried to log a support case with Apple in order to have them call me, only to have the system tell me that my support has already expired, despite having purchased the Mac only 4 months ago. It seems that my Apple One-Year Limited Warranty is actually only 90 days when it comes to telephone support. So here I am!
Does anyone else have this problem with optical out, and how can I resolve this? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello kcore66,
Would it be possible for you to upload one of the files in
question so that I can take a look. In Captivate 1.01 there is an
intermittent problem where sometimes the audio is either cut off or
just doesn't play when you publish / preview. To get around this
simply moving the audio object back and forth along the timeline
and then positioning it back in it's original position works 9
times out of 10.

• Digital Optical Out problem on USB LIVE Exter

Jpc's guide to digital outputs was great but it didn't seem to address the problems I'm having with my Soundblaster LIVE USB External! I've contacted support on numerous occasions but with no solution...can anybody help me?My Problem:?I have the Soundblaster LIVE USB External Card and I'm trying to play DIVX movies with AC3 soundtracks in VLC media player and also standard DVDs with Dolby Digital 5. soundtracks using both WINDVD and PowerDVD. The Soundblaster is connected to my YAMAHA Home Cinema Recei'ver via the front Optical out (Not the Rear Coax SPDIF) and the amp is set to decode DD or DTS. I have my speaker settings in the Creative Soundblaster software set to Optical Out Only (the little checkbox) and the speakers are then fixed on 2.. In VLC Media player I've selected SPDIF output and I am getting sound but it's just stereo and the Recei'ver is showing that it's receiving a PCM sound signal. In PowerDVD under the config it shows that the Soundblaster is (in use) but under SPDIF is shows (not in use) and I can find no options in Power DVD to select SPDIF! Again I am getting sound but not full-on DD 5.. In WINDVD under sound config is shows options for selecting SPDIF but it's greyed out and unselectable! The only thing that is slected is Analog sound device! I have sound, again stereo!?So that's it really... I'm just trying to figure out why I am getting sound (in stereo only) but nothing that I try will give me full 5.! I understand the concept that ticking the Optical Output only box in the Creative Soundblaster software should then send a pure AC3 signal to the receiver and that should then decode it as it would a DVD from a DVD player! I have tested the front port of my Recei'ver with a set top DVD player and It gives my 5. with no problem!?Any help would be fab!?I'm so at my wits end with this that I'll offer a prize to anyone who can solve this for me!?CheersOlyMessage Edited by olyscott8 on 03-9-200705:48 AM

Thanks for the reply but i'm running Power DVD Delux and even earlier versions of Power DVD had 5. as standard. I think this is not the problem though. I don't want Power DVD to decode the AC3 I want it to pass through the card to my Yamaha Recei'ver and have that decode the AC3 tracks on both Divx and DVDs. So I click the box that says Digital Output Only and it makes no difference!
I did get this to work about a month after buying the card back in September 2006 now it aint working. I've tried every trick in the book from re-install (6 times) to a cleam boot in XP!!!! nothing works! could it be a duff card!
Remember there's a prize for whoever can solve this!
Cheers
Oly
