No disk in tray error and general frustratio

Hello all,
Ive went thru the FAQs in this section and tried a clean install and everything on my Audigy 2 Gamer Edition. My problem is, none of the included diagnostic software works anymore. Speaker settings, Creative Diagnostics, Graphic Equalizer and all those wonderful programs no longer load. I get either no error message or the following one when trying to load one:
CTIntfrc.dll was not found. Reinstalling may fix this problem.
Well I tried that and get to about 95% in my installation when it gives me another error stating there is no disk in the dri've. Im using my original disk that came with the sound card, so maybe Windows just hates me.
Ive tried the newest drivers for my card, and they worked somewhat. The diagnositcs would work, but made voices in games like CounterStrike:Source all have this weird echo to it. So I uninstalled and went back to defaults.
What im hoping to get from this post is some answers on how to get my diagnostic stuff working, or even how to fix the problem with the new drivers. Here are my system specs:
P4 3.4 GHz with HT
2 GB Ram
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Gamer Edition
ASUS P4P800 SE Mobo
Windows XP with SP2.
Thanks.

This ended up being a device control policy in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12. My guess is if we were up to date with the latest relesse of SEP server this wouldn't have been an issue but thankfully we no longer needed the device policy. Thought I would follow up.

I configured this RAID scheme (two two drive mirrors striped together) according to this kbase document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304377
As shown in the above "diskutil checkRAID" output I have a failed HDD. So I replaced the HDD with another 160GB cold spare. I added the new drive to the mirror "Mirror_1" also known as disk5 and hit rebuild. Received the normal message that all data on the new drive I was adding would be erased.
I then receive the following error immediately in the Console Log:
    Rebuilding RAID "Mirror_1"
2006-12-15 23:50:24.741 DiskManagementTool [375] WARNING: Could not find Apple Boot partition to check it's size, skipping disk5s-1s.
    Rebuilding RAID slice "disk4s3"
Just to stem some confusion, the device ID disk4s3 has been used by the system for both the old failed HDD and the new replacement HDD.
The result of this attempted rebuild is I end up with all the data from Mirror_1 on the new HDD but the new HDD is not successfully added to the RAID, therefore Mirror_1 is still degraded and my problem not resolved.
I ran the appropriate rebuild cmd from both the GUI Disk Utility as described and from the CLI "diskutil repairMirror disk5 disk4s3" but no joy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This volume houses a large amount of important data including user home directories so while some offline time may be required data loss would not be very acceptable.
Thanks in advance and I will be happy to provide more information as necessary.

I guess doing it in Terminal would fail too:

Because it can not repair the errors I have started "repair disk". It says "can not unmount Macintosh HD". Even if I have started from the external disk?
So I get my install CD (Mac OS X 10.5) and started from that. I got the same errors with that disk utility.
Can someone tell me, if this are "right" errors or do I have to try more to repair this errors? My computer is running fine.
I am a bit irritated now.
    Best regards

Way back in Jaguar Disk Utility would pop up dozens of "advisory" messages of no interest nor meaning to anyone except possibly some programmers. This needlessly alarmed regular users. The same thing is happening again in Leopard. The SUID messages are not meaningful nor are they errors, in effect they are announcements that some list being consulted by the utility says one thing, the actual files say something else, Disk Utility is going to assume there is a reason for actual setting and not going to change it, but you (it's kind of assuming you are the programmer) should know this. If the "Die Zugriffssteuerungsliste" is German for ACL (Access Control List) it is the same deal: an ACL was found, but no one told Disk Utility there was suppose to be one.
If the messages bother you download the whole 110MB 10.5.1 update and run it. It quiets down the output for all the SUID statements save one. Might even shut down the ACL advisories--don't know because I haven't bothered to download 110MBs of updater, I just ran the patch update.

  • Time capsule says disk has an error and will not mount on my computer; how can I purge TC before returning it to apple for replacement?

Time capsule will not mount but stillhas wi-fi;apple sent a replacement that works fine. I have to send my old time capsule back to apple but I want to purge it for security reason (personal data).  Will pushing the reset button while plugging it in to restore to factory setting delete all back-ups also?

No, it won't do anything to the hard disk.
You need to go to the disk tab on the airport utility.. and erase the drive.. if the drive doesn't show up it is dead and not an issue.. Also Apple are careful to destroy data left on drives.. It might be hard to trust them.. but I think they are careful.. mind you if you have your account numbers for your multi-million dollar accounts.. then use an axe and forget the warranty.

  • MXF frame read errors and general render errors since update to CC

    Hi there folks,
Being a Creative Cloud member for a while now I share the benefits of immediate updates of CC products. However, I also get to deal with the downsides, it seems.
Since I updated to CC versions of the entire Adobe Collection I experienced unprecedented trouble with After Effects. I'll mention the most pertinent errors:
    - I used to render short compositions to uncompressed HD Quicktime, functioning as a master render for future sorts of output for my clients or just to have optimum quality before further conversions. For some reason AE CC has been generating all sorts of video dropouts lately, especially when audio render is set to 'auto'. Furthermore I noticed that the only audio res that I can choose in case of an uncompressed QT render is 8000 Hz. This is new in AE CC, I don't understand the reason for this modification since the previous AE versions never had this limitation.
I must mention the fact that other output formats and codecs also suffer from dropouts, be it less frequently than QT uncompressed.
    - Imported MXF files from my customers which I incorporate in AE compositions are also full of dropouts. Every dropout shows up as a single frame (two fields) of red or black. Premiere Pro encounters the same problem and reports the dropouts as frames with a read or decode error. I checked some older MXF files in previous AE projects that have been rendered and delivered perfectly in the past, but these old MXFs now appear to have the same issue. I tested the older and the new MXF on another PC that wasn't updated to CC versions and found no dropouts at all. Something must have changed in the updated codecs that belong to the CC version. All MXFs play fine in VLC player on all systems, so it's not the video source being faulty. Anyone recognize this?
I do get notifications of CC product updates, but is there a way to just update the codecs? Maybe there is a better codec for MXF.
    Any help is truy appreciated!

Like often, it's better to wait a little until there's enough people experiencing the same problem. So everyone here: thanks for responding to my post! In the end it seems to have helped, considering the update of Adobe. I am still a little precautious, because some MXFs give no red frames at all (input side I'm talking about) and others still do, but then the strange thing is that scrubbing the MXFs forth and back a bit results in having less red frames to none at all in the end. The red frames now disappear and then re-appear on different points in time of the MXF file, whereas I always found them being bound to specific and unchanging points, especially on the first frame of a scene change for instance.
Anyway, Adobe Media Encoder is not suffering from this problem, so there is a workaround, converting the footage before using it in AE and Premiere. That's good enough for now. But the problem hasn't vanished yet. Another problem that I had with rendering uncompressed HD Quicktime videos that always generated dropouts has all of a sudden magically disappeared. Thanks Adobe. I see progress.

  • Odd EXC_BAD_ACCESS error and general leaks and beginners trouble

    Hi,
I am new to apple programming and thought I'd get into that and opengl programming by creating a small utility to display images.
I've stumbled upon memory leaks, however. The "leaks" CLI utility mentions lots of leaks, but I'm not sure I can trust that.
The xcode project can be seen at http://elendil.qeep.dk/code/opengl_imageviewer/ and the main file at http://elendil.qeep.dk/code/opengl_imageviewer/main.cpp. An archive can also be found at http://elendil.qeep.dk/code/opengl_imageviewer.zip for the interested.
I have two problems. First of all, upon calling NavDialogRun(ref) in getFileURLRef() (line 86) the xcode run log gives me lots of "2007-08-06 02:10:17.977 opengl_imageviewer[12047] * _NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x37bba0 of class NSCFDictionary autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking" messages that I do not understand at all. I reckon this is the main culprit.
Secondly if I call the glPixelStorei() functions in line 129 and 130 the gdb debugger pops up with "EXCBADACCESS". Commenting out these lines makes the code seemingly work. I doubt these two commands are the base of the problem, however.
I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    -Kenneth

It is prefectly understandable. I was working on a little app to use MacOS X's built-in spellchecker as a replacement for ispell. I had the exact same problem. The classes I had to use seemed completely independent. But they just wouldn't work until all the Cocoa runtime had been initialized. It is hard to tell which parts will behave that way. Usually, it is the higher level, OS or user interaction classes. The base core foundation classes or low-level Cocoa (NSAutoReleasePool, for example) will always work.
MacOS X is also a confusing beast. While Cocoa is the best and easiest way to get most things done, there are some things that need Carbon. Those navigation dialogs, for example, don't exist in Cocoa as far as I can tell. You must use Carbon. Yet, they seem to use Cocoa underneath. There are several other MacOS X subsystems that are the same way.
As for C++ vs. Obj-C, that has to be a purely personal decision. Like yourself, I spent many years learning and using C++. That was a huge investment and I would like to get something out of it. But, as difficult as it is to say it, I must admit that lately I have been more productive using Cocoa and ObjC than I could have been using C++, even though I know C++ backwards and forwards.
I make it a point to use Objective-C++ (using .mm files instead of .m). In theory I can now use my Carbon-aware auto_ptr, but I usually end up not even using that. At least I can declare my variables where I want.

  • StackOverFlow error and general usability

I have been using JDev 10.1.3 prod, with associated updates since their release but there are still some really annoying bugs in the IDE that seem to have made their way into the prod release from the EA versions. Don't get me wrong here, I really like the IDE, but these issues really need to get sorted out! Or maybe it's me, but either way, any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.
Basically on IDE startup, I get the StackOverFlow, at least the IDE still starts up but in the EA versions the jdev process would spiral out of control.
When I have multiple views open, if I open an XML file, this sometimes causes all views to collapse back to the Applications Navigator view... very annoying!
When I have multiple files open, if I want to close my currently open and viewable file, I need to click the 'X' on the tab twice. Once makes it lose focus, but still be listed, and then on second click, it disappears.
That's about it for now, there are a few other small issues, but if the above 3 got sorted, I'd be delighted!

I would like to a two more usability issues.
First, the is still a sometimes problem when opening .jsp and .jspx files. Typically when opening a second .jspx file immediately after opening a .jspx file, JDeveloper will just hang using no cpu. No activity, no screen repainting, etc. If you minimize JDeveloper and then restore it, nothing. Looking at the process in the Windows Activity Manager will show no cpu usage and almost no memory usages (something like 3,000 K instead of the usual 200,000 K). You have to kill the jdevW.exe process to continue. This doesn't happen repeatably enough to warrant trying to open a bug for it :-(
Second is a bug relating to cut and paste functionality. After a long period of use without saving files (say an hour), I will highlight some text using the shift key and the cursor keys and then hit control & insert. JDeveloper will then simple shutdown and disappear instantaniously. Really makes one mad. I usually remember to keep hitting the Save All button, but sometimes I forget. Again, this issue doesn't happen repeatably enough to warrant trying to open a bug...

  • Contacts on client machine suffer from disk I/O errors

Contacts are running slow if not at all on my client machines.  I check the logs and it is having trouble with accessing the files and or writing the files.  all other programs seem to work fine.  Mail hangs but I think it is because of the contacts issue.  It seems to have trouble reading the contacts list and dumps the list and attempts to rebuild from iCloud and the server.  there are many .unknown files in the library.  The logs state that there is a disk I/O error while accessing /Network/myserver/Volumes/MyBook/Users/username/Library/Address Book (this is from memory but it is close).  The contacts work perfectly (as expected) if the user is logged into the server.
I am running 10.8 server and clients with shared home folders.  the user folders are on an external drive.  the drive does have permissions turned on.  I have wiped out the contacts directory in the  Library folder and it proceeds to rebuild but the problem is still there.
would rebuilding the clients from scratch help?

At first I thought it may be related to upgraded 10.8 clients and server i.e. went throught the normal install option without re-installing OSX.
So I completely rebuild (i.e. erased and then installed Mountain Lion from USB stick) the server and the client machines...but I still get the same issue, so clearly this is NOT the solution.
I have also observed (upon reading others' issues with Contacts/mail) apple forums - so I followed the the same action (trashed the Address Book folder in ~Library/Application Support/ ) after unchecking everything in iCloud in system prefs/restarting etc.) but this doesn't so solve the problem either
I also observed teh following behaviours:
Login into iCloud for the first time - appears to be ok
Run Contacts - appears to be ok
Wait the addresses to sync from iCloud - appears to be ok
    Quit
Run Contacts - still appears to be ok
(i.e. the errors above are not displayed in log)
Run Mail (which takes a long time)
Contacts sudden looses all address and effectively both Mail and Contacts freeeze. It is at this point I start seeing the above errors
I get a further odd error in Contacts (in a triange with '!' warning)
Basically Contacts and mail don't seem to want to work together - they appear ok in isolation - obviously this isn't acceptable.
I've noted that if I create a local logon on any one of the client macs, the issue with contacts/mail does not occur and runs perfectly smoothly. So in my eyes it appears to be a problem in Mountain Lion Server/Client Combo Only (I did not have this issue under Lion Server/Client Combo)

  • No Reason For Disk Too Slow Error, any ideas?

    Ok,
So I've used Garageband for years from iLife 06 and up and I've never had an issue with any Garageband until now. Here's the deal, I still get the disk too slow error, and there is no explanation. Below is my computer config:
    COMP I'M USING:
    Macbook Pro 13 inch
    OS X Mavericks
Intel Core 2 Duo (1st unibody)
    4 GB of RAM MAX
BRAND NEW Hybrid 7200 RPM Drive Installed 500GB total, 300 GB FREE
    NO Other programs are open.
I use Garageband for recording songs but mostly now for recording podcasts. So the track I am using is normally 1 hour in duration. I can't seem to skip around, from minute 1 to minute 54 and edit at my whim without beach ball and timeing out getting the disk to slow error I never had this issue before, I either get the disk to slow error when trying to navigate large gaps of time in the podcast as I said earlier or even during RECORDING a podcast it'll simply say disk to slow, stop recording and occassionally say there are too many tracks in use, when I only record using 1 track of audio.
How can this be possible? Even my old G4 allowed me to jump all over the timeline with no issues. It seems there is some kind of flaw in the software. And yes, I just restored OSX Mavericks to my brand new Hybrid Hard drive, so there's no explanation as there are no disk errors or permissions errors of any kind.
I'd rather not hookup an external drive to record too as that seems silly when I've never had too before. If this "modern" computer can't do something that my old G4 ibook can do, don't you think we're going in the wrong direction with this program?
I've heard of so many people having this issue, and I thought upgrading my OS and getting a new HD would help but it hasn't. I'm at wits end with this issue.
Any advice would be helpful, thank you.

There are a few other reports of problems with 10.6.7
Some audio device(s) inputs have ceased working, a few disk to slow messages...etc. I don't see the wisdom of upgrading a working DAW system if that's it main function. OSX has to support a lot of different hardware now, many, many Intel motherboard and/or processor revisions... it's not going to be as smooth sailing as it used to be.

  • Disk too slow error when using M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard

I bought the M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard. And when I plug it into my MacBook Pro to do some playing, the project will record for maybe a minute but then I get a 'disk too slow' error and the recording stops. This happens every single time, no matter if there's 30 tracks or 1 track on the recording. I know that it is the keyboard causing the error because I am currently working on a 59 track piece that has effects on almost every track and my setup doesn't even blink. (well it'll pinwheel for a second when I hit record sometimes, but the CPU and disk meters don't ever get near red-line levels).
What on earth is causing this stupid keyboard to cause this problem, and how do I fix it? It's clearly the keyboard. When I unplug it and record a live track on a project that just gave me the 'disk too slow' error, everything works just fine!
    Grr...
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Edit: I have the MBP plugged via firewire into an Echo Audiofire and then into a WD hard dtive (at 7200 RPM). The keyboard is USB into the MBP.

    hi
i spoke with Apple pro application support staff who confirmed that the Tascam 1884 patch for 10.4.10 is the cause of the problem. The apple boot drive can reliably record 1 channel of audio under normal circumstances. Apple staff described the situation as "unfortunate" and recommended to wait for Tascam to release 10.4.10 compatible drivers.
For anyone interested in the technical background, the Tascam 10.4.10 patch DOWNGRADES the audioFW component (messing with kernel headers etc.). This compromises the OS's ability to correctly communicate with FW devices.
I had tried recording to a firewire 800 drive, but all FW IO is affected by the 10.4.10 Tascam patch: Logic simply didn't record anything to disk when I tried this, and the machine became unresponseive. I do not recommend anyone attempt recording to a FW drive with the Tascam drivers installed.
I have recorded circa 400 hours of single channel 96K 24bit audio to my internal Macbook Pro boot drive using the same software/configuration under 10.4.9 without a single glitch. I do recognise that when requiring heavy disk IO it is not advisable to record to the boot drive. However, 1 channel of audio can be reliably recorded if the system is well maintained.
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.

    ============================================================================
A dynamic disk's status is Online (Errors).
Cause:  The dynamic disk has I/O errors on a region of the disk. A warning icon appears on the dynamic disk with errors.
Solution:  If the I/O errors are temporary, reactivate the disk to return it to Online status. For instructions describing how to bring
the disk back online, see Reactivate a missing or offline dynamic disk.

  • Error "get disk space file error" to install patch p158 to FM 7.2

I have Adobe FM 7.2 with the Patch B144 on Windows 7 x64 and when I try to install the new patch AdobeFrameMaker7_2p158Patcher.exe I get the error "get disk space file error" and the window freeze.

    > I have Adobe FM 7.2 with the Patch B144 on Windows 7 x64 and ...
I'm surprised that FM7 even runs native in Win7. I would expect various random problems during FM ops, and a complete inability to reliably use the Acrobat/Distiller5 that came with FM7 (although a later version of Acrobat/Distiller, separately installed, might work, esp. if using a Print-to-Ps-and-Distill workflow).
You need to install FM7 inside a virtual machine. There are several solutions (e.g. Virtual Box) for that, some of which require that the CPU have hardware virtualization. Most AMD chips do. It's often fused-off, however, on low end Intel chips (just because you didn't pay enough).
I've built a Win7 Pro64 PC, and run FM7 in XP Mode (a virtual machine that is a complete instance of Windows XP/32, and not to be confused with Compatibility Mode). XP Mode is a free download from Microsoft, still available, but only for Windows 7 Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate (not Basic, Home or not-so-Premium). Note: XPM is not supported on Windows 8, 8.1 or 10. You'll need a 3rd-party VM for that (and you'll probably have to install your own copy of XP in any 3rd party VM).
If your chip is AMD, there's a hotfix patch (KB 2519949 as I recall) you need to install before you do anything else about XPM. This patch is not included in any of the 200+ Windows Updates that a virtualized XP wants you to install, in several waves (yes, this takes a while).
    And from a related discussion:
    >> Microsoft no longer support WinXP, does it a risk to use it?
After you install XP in the VM, and apply all 200+ Windows Updates, and install the apps you need:
    disable the VM's networking capability*
or at the very least never use a browser inside the VM
if possible, let the AV software in the host OS access the VM's virtual drive
MS is going to EOL Windows 7 in 2015Q2 as well.
    * For some apps, the networking would need to be on periodically for license validation.

I've cleared almost 30 gig off of my hard drive in the past 2 weeks, and it will temporarily show that in the Get Info box.  But hours later, I am still getting a disk full error and all of the memory has disappeared.  I have cleared my backup logs from Time Machine, checked the mail folder, cleaned out tons of photos and videos and it still keeps filling back up.

Any ideas on what to do next?
    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.
