No display on iPod Mini 4gig

I brought my mother a second hand 4gig iPod Mini last Christmas and she has really enjoyed it.
However, last week when she went to use it, the backlight came on but instead of the menu, faint lines could be seen.
I've reset it, restored factory settings, left it hoping the lines would go, but nothing happened.
Please help!

If it still has the original battery, it might need a new one. Does it work when connected to a power supply?
You could make an appointment with an Apple genius and I'm sure they could tell you for sure.

  • IPod mini only plays MP3, no longer plays iTunes m4p files

I connected my friends Windows formated iPod mini (4gig) to my Mac so we could transfer a song she purchased through iTunes 6. Initially there was a dialog box that wanted to update the software on the iPod. Since she had never updated her iPod we didn't choose to do that. The iPod showed up in iTunes fine, and we then authorized the Mac with her account.we transferred the song. The song would play fine from the iPod mini through iTunes, but the minute we disconnected from the computer and tried to play through the iPod, it would skip all the protected m4p files and only play the MP3 files and regular AAC unprotected files. All the protected iTunes songs will no longer play. She has since updated her iPod with the latest software from her windows, and we have deauthorized the Mac, but still the same issues. We then reauthorized the iPod on the Mac and still nothing. Any ideas?

Upgrading to iTunes 6.0.1 fixes the problem. At least it did on my 3G Mac formated iPod. The mini is working as it should be we restored it to factory settings and got the basic functionality working again. iTunes 6.0.1 allows the 3G iPod to play my recently purchased music, previously puchased music and books, as well as all the other MP3 and non-purchased AAC encoded music. I'm glad I didn't have to restore the 3G 30 gig iPod since that would have been a lot of work.
    Thanks for the fix Apple!

  • Help on Restoring Ipod Mini

I have recieved a Ipod min (4gig) from a friend of mine. It didnt come with any of the cables, tho it came with a Belkin Powerdock. He gave it to me, telling me it wouldnt charge. I managed to get it to charge, i could even listen to the music and access itunes. But it was running really slugish, so i thought... why not restore it, and update it? well....when i restored it... i now permanently have a little image of a AC adapter being plugged into a wall. I dont have a AC adapter, and i have NO idea on where to get one...
Today, i bought a wall adapter, but its not AC, you plug the usb into the Ipod and then into the outlet thing and that is suposed to work, but i still get that image. I even tried the... sketchy thing... idno i saw it in another thread.
Any help would be appreciated! ....

I got it from Target. I purchased a car charger just before then, because i was also told that was suposed to work too, but it didn't and before anyone suggests this, i dont live ANYWHERE near a ipod store.
the adapter i bought, its a small white box, that plugs into the wall, and it has a USB socket on the back, the adapter came with all the cords i needed. When i plugged it in, i thought it would work, but it still shows me that image.
retrying the reset...? well.... i would but my computer wont recognize the ipod anymore...

  • Computer crash caused mismatch ofr I-Tunes Program For iPod Mini

A few weeks ago my laptop crashed and I had to reinstall iTunes At this point the iTunes won't converse with my iPod mini (4gig) unless I chose to overwrite all the albums I have in the iPod. How do I get to keep the music albums I have on the ipod and add the new albums in the library of iTunes?

Your iPod is being linked to a newly installed iTunes it's never "seen" before. What you will see is this.
Do not click 'yes' whatever you do.
You need to get the songs on your iPod back to the computer an into your new iTunes library.
    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods may depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
If none of these methods work, try CopyPod which also supports the transfer of videos from iPod to computer.
Once the songs are safely back in iTunes and only then you can then click 'yes' to that message. That will now 'associate' the iPod with your new iTunes library and you can go on using it as you did previously.

  • IPod mini went through wash and displays folder with exclamation point HELP

My friend has an ipod mini and i guess it went through the wash and now it will turn on but it displays the folder and exclamation point. I tried resetting it with menu and select but it goes right back to the folder after reset. I have already read apples document so please don't post it. My question is do you think it is the logic board or hard drive that needs to be replaced? It seems if it were the logic board then it wouldn't turn on at all. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth fixing or not. Is there any way i can tell for sure which component is bad? Thanks

  • IPod mini 1st Gen. Display problem

    Hello everybody!
I've got a problem with my iPod mini display: In the last few weeks the display got brighter and brighter.. or should I say I lost the contrast? .. so now I can't see anything on the display. The iPod works very well but I have to use it blind And the problem ist not solved by using the contrast settings! But now I can't see the seetings anyway I think, the display is internally damaged or something like this..? Do you have any idea? Thank you very much for your help!

  • My iPod mini's display is blank

I KNOW that the contrast is as high as it goes, but the display is totally blank. If I keep pushing the buttons I can make it play, but can't read anything. Just this morning when I plugged it into the computer, the battery thing came on very strong, but then it faded and again I can't see anything. Everything else seems to be working well, but like I said I can only do things by trial and error for not being able to see what I'm doing.
    HELPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am also having this problem. My Ipod 4g mini was brand new out of the box. I hooked it up to my ibook G4 10.3.9. Transferred songs to it from ITunes and then waited for the battery to fully charge for a few hours. I came back. Dismounted the Ipod, unplugged it from the USB and the screen was fine. But while I was scrolling through songs the screen began to get very faint. I went into the contrast and turned it up thinking it might be an 'available light' issue. It seemed better. I put the Ipod down to answer the phone and when I came back the screen was gone. No next, no pixels. No nothing. The backlight still worked, but there was still no text.
Now the weird things is that the music still played and the click wheel still clicked but I just couldn't read what was on the screen.
Being a long time Mac user (back to the SE), I fushed it out, restored it, reset it, tested my connections. Updated Itunes and the Software update etc. Nothing worked. Still no screen display.
(SKIP DOWN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR ME RANT)
So I took it back to the store I bought it from and was politely told that because I had opened it, they couldn't take it back. They directed me to the local Apple Store here. I took it there and was told they'd never heard of that problem before and then directed me to call the 1-800 Apple support line. I did that and after waiting on hold for 40 minutes (!!), they suggested I restore, and fiddle with contrast etc etc. After telling them I'd done all they, they said they'd never heard of this problem before. And told me to fill out a form to get it sent in to be fixed. Not to mention I bought it for a trip I'm taking and now won't be able to take it.
    (END OF RANT)
Now, Apple said they hadn't heard of this problem before. But clearly, I am not alone in this. I have searched the discussions and found a few more instances where people have had the same exact problem.
We have to let apple know there's some sort of defect on these so other people don't get duped into buyin' them.
Oh, and by the way, if anyone has a solution to this screen fading issue. That'd be great. Thanks.
I mean BESIDES the all-encompassing "Try resetting it."
Also, I've read in this forum that a woman had the same problem, sent it back to apple, got it back and the same thing happened again. What gives?

  • Computer wont recognize ipod mini + mini displays low battery and sad icon

ok so my ipod mini wont get recognized by itunes or windows and when i hook it up to the computer it displays a low battery icon and when i take it off it displays the apple icon for 7-8 seconds and then shows the unhappy face icon
ive tried ressetting it and everything
    help

    See these troubleshooting articles.
    My iPod is sad.
What does this picture on my iPod mean?
Also, there is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon. Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.

  • Display help anyone with an ipod mini

    hi guys,
i have an ipod mini with a cracked display the ipod itself still works like the backlight and the clicker, can anyone tell me how to get into play a song from the main menu using the sounds of clicks eg. 2 clockwise enter, 1 click down enter, just so i can play music while i enquie about getting it fixed. many thanks. joe

    Hello Joe,
Sorry to hear about the cracked display. One solution is to find different pictures or videos of each menu that can be found on the iPod mini and use that to determine how many clicks need to be heard before you have reached the right menu.
For example, I did a quick Google search for "iPod menus" and here is the first result that came up.

  • IPod mini displays only an apple logo

My sisters iPod mini wasnt damaged in any known way. It didnt fall or get bumped. Its in a protective case too. One day it stopped turning on. It displays only an apple logo untill the battery dies. What can she do?

    See these.
iPod shows only an Apple logo and doesn't start up.
Only the Apple logo appears when turned on.

  • Ipod mini stuck with apple logo displayed

My ipod mini only displays the apple logo, will not reset, and is not recognized by the computer (doesn't open iTunes or appear on the desktop when I manually open iTunes). Has charged all day so battery should not be the problem. When I try to reset, the apple logo will briefly disappear then immediately come back on. Cannot get anything else to display. Any suggestions??

Thanks. I tried to put it into disk mode but it wouldn't do it. The apple logo still displays, but now it blinks when plugged into the computer, and stays solid when plugged into the AC adaptor. It is my son's iPod and he just told the battery hasn't been holding its charge as long as it used to. But this sounds like more than a battery problem to me. What do you think? It was purchased in Dec of last year. Thanks for all your effort to help me!

  • IPod mini displays sad ipod on screen

Well I've had my iPod mini for about 6 months now and up until a month ago it has been working great..but it has started showing me the folder with the explanation point and the sad ipod. I have already restored my iPod once, but now I think I need to do it again, but the thing is whenever I try to connect my iPod to my computer my computer won't recognize it. I've tried everything but still nothing works. And the only way to restore it is if my iPod can be recognized. I think it might be because my iPod is not charged, but how can I tell if it is charging or not if it only shows the apple logo or the sad ipod screen? Help needed Please!!! I have a windows computer too.

    Hiya,
The first diagnosis is correct - the Hard Drive has died. This is common on iPod's of this age. You have two options. Firstly, you can try the repair yourself. This would involve taking the iPod apart and replacing the hard drive inside. This can be quite tricky. Your second choice is to send it to a repair company, such as mine (www.dr-pod.com). However, we are in the UK, but there are lots in the US too.
Hope you get your iPod sorted,
    Mark

  • IPod Mini display

    Hello.
I am wondering if the iPod mini scrolls the artist/album/and song title while in the menu mode? I know it scrolls durring the "Now Playing" screen. But when i am browsing for a song it would be nice if the title scrolled like Podcast titles do.
Thanks in advance for your help.

OK. That was my suspicion! Guess it’s another reason to add a 60 gig video to my “need list”
    Thanks, Brad

  • IPod mini seen on desktop, not in iTunes

The iPod is fully charged, I have reset it about 4 times, I've restarted my computer, and I've done everything else detailed here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
(though one of the messages is for a Windows computer)
I am on a MacBook running OS X (10.6.8) - as much as my MacBook, bought in 2007, can handle.
My ipod mini has always worked just fine with my MacBook. But now:
It shows up on the desktop when i plug it in
It shows the "do not disonnect" screen (as it should)
It does NOT show up in iTunes
What's changed between the time the iPod worked with iTunes and now:
I was playing it while I thought I was charging it, but hadn't plugged it in properly. It shut down - and all of my music on it was erased
I went from OS X 10.4 all the way to OS X (10.6.8)
I've updated iTunes several times since then (really, does a week go by when iTunes *isn't* updated?
So.... other ideas not already named at
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
I also have an iBook clamshell running OS 9, with the last version of iTunes that would work on such, but it doesn't work on that - and from what I've read, it never did work on OS 9.

"Have you tried doing a Reset... while it is connected (with docking cable) to the Mac that is running iTunes?"
Yes. Three times. Like I said - I've tried everything detailed here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
"Since this is an old iPod mini, do you use USB or FireWire to connect it.  It should work with either, but it may work better with FireWire (if you have a FireWire docking cable)."
No FireWire docking cable for the iPod (frown)
"Does the iPod mini still work properly when it is disconnected?  Charges, plays songs, displays its screens and menus..."
Yes - although, as I said, all music is gone. But otherwise, it works just fine.
"doing a low level reformat of the iPod's storage disk using Disk Utility. "
Looked hopeful! But... got an error. Tried it a couple of times... in fact, every time iTunes starts up when I plug in my iPod (and it always does, even if it won't show my iPod mini on the left side), I get an error saying.... something about not being able to fix the device...
I'm wondering if I should try an alternative to iTunes and see if *that* can see the iPod mini...
Thanks, Kenichi Watanabe and planb77, for trying. It's appreciated.
