No Display - Target disk mode to PC

the display went dead on my ibook. Nothing displays on an external monitor either. I don't have access to another Mac computer, only a PC. Is it possible to use target disk mode with firewire to my PC? Any ideas for getting data off my hard drive, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Some FireWire-equipped PCs support this type of connection, while others do not; if your PC does, you will need to install software such as MacDrive onto it.

I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

HT1661 Problems mounting Imac in target disk mode on retina laptop with a solid state drive as host

I'm trying to use an Imac in target disk mode to copy files from it to a new retina display laptop with a solid state drive, but the target drive will not mount even tho it does start in target disk mode. I have all the proper firewire connection. The Imac will not respond for more than a few minutes before crashing when started from its own system. I would like to salvage a few files from it before I perform a clean install of the system.
Anyone has any idea why it wont mount in Target mode onto the retina laptop? Help!

Mac OS X doesn't offer a "clean install" option.
I'm assuming your target Mac is running 10.6?
And you setup the target Mac without adding a Firewire cable until after the Firewire logo appears on the screen?

Something annoying this way comes: using targeted disk mode for boot drive

So, this should be doable, but it's not working. Can anyone explain why, or what I'm doing wrong?
I have an Intel iMac, and an Intel MacBook - both are running Leopard. I temporarily want to use the iMac as the workstation, and the MacBook as the operating system hard disk. So, I put the MacBook in targeted disk mode, and connected it to the iMac via firewire 400. From the iMac, I option-booted to see the available boot disks. I then selected the MacBook's disk and clicked the arrow icon to boot. Once the iMac attempts booting, it displays the spinning cog on gray screen for longer than usual, then goes to a blue screen with an intermittent spinning cog. It seems to hang at this point.
I've done this with PPC machines in the past, so I'm not sure what the deal his here. The only things I can think of that would be a problem, but really shouldn't be are: 1) the MacBook is running 10.5.2 (keeping it at v2 due to the CS3 issue) and the iMac is running 10.5.3. Also, the iMac is the 24" model - so perhaps there's a screen resolution issue...

Presumably the version of Leopard on both models are hardware specific? I would have thought extensions for device specific hardware such as graphics drivers etc on the Macbook would not include support for the 24" iMac. Bigger screen, more resolution support and a more powerful graphics card.
If you were to go the other way I can imagine the driver included for the iMac 24' would probably support the smaller Macbook screen.
I don't have any link or kbase that I can point at to prove this 'theory' because thats all it is - a theory. But it kind of makes sense to me and does explain the behaviour you see.

Can't boot in target disk mode

I have launched Migration Assistant and attached a 400-800 firewire cable between my new iMac and my PowerMac G4. When I try to restart the G4 in target disk mode (either by holding down the T key or choosing target disk mode in System Preferences), it dies after a few seconds - never mounting.
I have followed the suggestions in the Apple document relating to troubleshooting target disk mode - no other firewire cables attached, keyboard plugged into computer not display, no firmware password required.
I will not use Migration Assistant to move applications, but I do want to move my user account. Any suggestions? Otherwise I will try migrating from the backup hard drive instead.

you can try migrating via ethernet. that does not require rebooting. connect the computers by an ethernet cable and migrate. if that does not want to work either do it via an external drive. you seem to have one. back up the G4 to the external and migrate from that. the backup should be either a bootable clone or a TM backup. you can make a bootable clone using CCCloner, Superduper or the restore tab in disk utility.

Upgrading Xserve G5 using USB Optical Drive/ Target Disk Mode

Hello Everyone!
I am trying to update my Xserve G5 that is currently running 10.3 (Panther) to 10.5 (Leopard). I have tried multiple methods and cannot seem to get it to work.
I have tried to:
Use a USB Optical Drive - I tried using a USB optical drive because the Xserve G5 has a CD drive not a superdrive. It recognizes the Leopard Installation DVD as it pops up on the desktop. I open the installation and click the restart button, but it restarts again and goes to my desktop as if I just turned on the Mac. I have tried doing this in Safe Mode (Holding down Shift on Start Up) and trying to select it from volumes (Holding down Option on Start Up). These two do not work.   I believe it is because I am using a USB optical drive and that it wont recognize the drive unless you are logged on in the OS. Could this be it?
Use FireWire Target Disk Mode - I also tried to use target disk mode by hooking up my Xserve to my MacBook Pro 2009. Everything work fine. I put the Xserve into target disk mode by holding down T on start up and it goes into target disk mode. It pops up on my MacBook Pro desktop as a FireWire external device (I can access all of my files on the Xserve hard drive). My only problem is that I do not know how to run the installation disk of Leopard off of my MacBook Pro so it installs it on my Xserve.
Any Suggestions or Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Boot th xSeve using alt key from Install Disc in MBP, then...
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
      *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
   3. Click the Erase tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, APM Partition.
Quit DU which puts you back to the Installer... Install.

Broken Macbook Pro won't finish copying even with target disk mode. Help!

I'm helping someone with a Macbook Pro 2010-11. It worked for a few years but eventually degraded last month when it wouldn't go 10 minutes without displaying the rainbow loading ball. Possibly a hard drive problem.
The owner never backed any of the computer up. I am trying to salvage their data before it's lost. The computer can power on. I have been turning the computer on and salvaging most of the data from numerous trips with USBs until it crashes, and then moving on to Target Disk Mode. The computer turns on slowly, displays the rainbow ball every minute or so, and never finishes copying or exporting anything. It still seems to be degrading.
I still need two things: One is a large folder with thousands of old OUTLOOK e-mails created on an old PC (which the owner no longer has).
Second is the folder/autobackup where OUTLOOK for Mac stores all the e-mails and settings.
I have found the folder -- I think it is the Main Identity or Office Identities. Am I correct? Will this bring back OUTLOOK on the newer Macbook Pro exactly like on the old one? I also know where the old e-mails folder is, but when I try to transfer either folder through Target Disk Mode on the newer Macbook Pro, it stops and gives me the "Some data in _____.olk14msgsource could not be read or written." AKA error code -36, halfway through the transfer.
I have tried exporting OUTLOOK on the broken Macbook Pro to a .olm, but it gets stuck halfway and gets stuck back on the rainbow ball. Then I shut the computer off. I have also tried going into the folders through target disk mode and deleting the .olk14msgsource files that are problematic, but there are too many of them.
Please help! The owner needs these files and OUTLOOK exactly like it was!

Desktop contents in the target disk mode

In previous uses of "target disk mode" the contents of the desktop of the target disk have appeared on the desktop of the master machine.
But with this new 10.4 being the master and my old ibook OS9.2.2 i don't see any of those files. And when I open the desktop folder listed in the finder of the 10.4 machine it is blank.
Is there any way I can move the contents of that folder to the 10.4 machine?

In Mac OS X, open (double-click) the iBook's drive icon on the desktop: the iBook's drive will display a FireWire icon since the iBook is in FireWire Target Disk Mode (the iBook is the Target computer). The iBook's drive will open in a Finder window. The Desktop Folder in that Finder window is the Mac OS 9 desktop of your iBook. Open that folder, then drag and drop files from it to your the desktop on the Mac OS X (Host) computer.

Target Disk Mode: Searching files in Bootcamp partition

I'm trying to search my Bootcamp partition via Spotlight or any search method
1. After I enter Target Disk Mode, two "Y" drives show up on my desktop: Bootcamp and Macintosh HD 320.
2. I click on the Bootcamp drive and try to do a search and nothing is displayed.
3. To trouble shoot, I click on the drive and enter a file name I can see is in Bootcamp, and still nothing shows up
4. I have tried going into spotlight and re-indexing the drive, but the Bootcamp drive is not recognized by spotlight. Though the Mac 320 drive is.
I don't care what proces I use to find the file, I just want to find the file.
My logic board went out on me and I'm trying to access files to transfer onto the new machine.

What is the set-up when transfer files through target disk mode

I'm a bit confused on how to set up the macs to do a file transer in target disk mode. I am transferring files from an imac to a macbook pro. I have the cable 6pin to 9pin. Now what I can't remember (apple.com instructions is what confused me) is on which computer do I hold down the 'T' on start up? Is it the computer I am transferring the files to? ( in this case the macbook pro). I use to do this fairly often, but not recently, and I have forgotten. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Macbook in target disk mode locks up when trying to transfer files to another computer. Suggestions?

A week ago I installed snow leopard on my girlfriend's macbook without backing anything up. Dumb idea I know. The installation failed multiple times. I ran her computer in target disc mode to try to save what files I could. Now when I try to transfer files it will freeze up at different times. Sometimes I can transfer a huge amount of data like 4GB's and the other times it locks up trying to transfer 4kB's. I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out. I can see the files but can not transfer them.
Any suggestions or past similar past experiences?

Have you noticed when you plug the drive in whether its making any sounds? You can put your ear up to the drive on the Macbook. Its located on the right hand front sided of the top case.
Also, check to see if the target disk mode icon is moving after a few minutes. If the firewire icon has stopped moving it usually indicates that theres something seriously wrong (probably mechanical) with the drive.
Id definitely give Disk Warrior a try. Especially if you have a situation where you can hear the drive running or spin up but it doesn't make any sound after that. Hope this helps.

Flashing Question Mark Folder after Clean Install in Target Disk Mode

I have an old iBook G4 with a failing optical drive and the need to reformat the hard drive and re-install OS 10.5.4. Since the optical drive is failing and unpredictable, I figured I'd do everything in target disk mode.
So I mounted the hard drive of the iBook to my Mac Pro via Firewire in target disk mode. I was able to successfully format the hard drive of the iBook, zeroing out all the data with 7 passes, and I was also able to successfully install OS 10.5.4 from my original Install DVD, again in target disk mode.
After the install was complete, I went through all the registration process and User Account setup and the iBook booted fine albeit still in target disk mode. So I shut down the Mac Pro, turned off the iBook and unplugged the Firewire cable. My Mac Pro booted up just fine afterward. But the iBook now gives me the flashing question mark/finder folder.
I know this means that the iBook is having trouble located a startup volume, or that the startup volume is corrupt or missing data. How can this be, though, after a reformat and clean install? Did I do something wrong in target disk mode? Or did I neglect to do something necessary?

I don't see APM as an option in Disk Utility when booting from my Mac Pro. I only have Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled), Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive), MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT.
How do I get my Mac Pro to repartition the iBook properly in target disk mode?

Mac Mini won't Boot after Target Disk Mode

We just bought a new iMac and used target disk mode via firewire from our older Mac Mini running OSX 10.4 to transfer data. Now when we go to restart the mini, the grey screen appears with apple logo and it seems to try to boot up but after a long time alway just ends up with a blue screen. I don't think I "ejected" the mini properly from the imac after the target disk mode transfer. Could the mini be stuck in target disk mode? I've tried to restart in different modes eg. safe mode, pram by holding down keys on start up but doesnt make a difference at all almost as if the keyboard isn't registering (and its a wired keyboard). Any ideas???

Mac shuts down in target disk mode

So I finally replaced my old iMac G4 with a shiny new MacBook Pro. But I've run into problems while attempting to copy user data over during the setup assistant process. I connect the two computers using a firewire cable. I put the old iMac into target disk mode. The PowerBook recognizes all my settings and lets me choose what to copy over. But every time the MacBook Pro starts copying data from the old iMac, the old iMac shuts down. Any ideas?

Target disk mode with external hard drive?

I have a very annoying problem. I've just bought a new Mac Mini, previously I had an iBook G4 600 (about 6 years old). My Mac mini works perfectly, but...
1) I don't want to copy everything over from the iBook with Migration Assistant, I'd rather pick and choose what to copy. Is buying a firewire cable and using Target Disk mode the only quick way to do this?
2) I was intending to transfer files using my external HD. But the Mini doesn't recognise my poor old external drive. However, all my iTunes music is on the external HD. It seems by far the fastest way to get the music off (as long as I can't get the mini to recognise the HD)would be to boot the iBook in Target Disk mode then somehow be able to read from the external HD as well. Is this possible? If not, what on earth can I do??

Okay after testing, I am ready to conceded that you are correct that you can daisy chain an external drive and a TDM Mac together and have them mount both drives.
However. unless Suz proves me wrong (Which is always a possibility), I do not think that it will fix her initial problem. Since all's TDM does is allow the computer to act as a Firewire device, so it and the external hard drive, are simply 2 FW devices on a serial bus. If the new Mac Can't mount the external drive from the old computer, I doubt it would mount it with the old computer connected to it. (Unless there is just some funky thing going on that having another firewire device on the bus corrects?)
Let's see if it shows up in System profiler, and if it shows up there how does Disk Utility see it?
Have you also tried resetting the NVRAM?
Also just to be on the safe side, do you have another Firewire device that you can connect, to let us know that the port on the new mac is actually working?
