No DNS settings when using built-in (hardwired) ethernet

Iv'e never had an issue with wireless operation, but now that a wired connection is necessary, I've run into something strange.
When connecting to a LAN with a DHCP source providing IP, router, DNS settings and more, the ibook fails to populate the DNS settings. I've got a valid IP and gateway address but no DNS servers are defined. I can put them in manually, but that would require me to change them each time I connect to a different wired network instead of relying on DHCP to do it's job.
Has anybody else seen this issue?

If (as you say "is the case") this is a small, Netgear cable router...then the Netgear will be acting as DNS server. Likely the Netgear is getting a dynamic IP address from ISP, or it's been set with static values the ISP has told the homeowner to enter into the Netgear. Either way, DNS will be provided to Netgear, and the Netgear should be sending the DNS on down to the client computers.
(Do you "see" any DNS server info in the Configuration panel when you're on wireless? If so, what IP address is that DNS server?)
Why does it work wireless, but not cabled?
You really need to go into SystemPreferences>Network>Configure...and tell us what you have configured in the eth0, or built-in Ethernet section.
It might not be a bad idea to reboot the mac after you plug in ethernet...probably not needed, but we don't know enough about your network settings.
You also say you can't access sites by name. Can you hit a website using an IP address in the Safari addressBar?

  • Windows 7 VM has DNS Problem When Using Wireless

    Hello All,
I've been fighting this virtual machine networking problem for over a week now. If anyone has a well-informed suggestion (not a guess) I would appreciate hearing about it.
Here's the problem in a nutshell and then I'll give more details: I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) as my primary (i.e., host) OS. I'm running Windows 7 Home Professional (32 bit) as the guest OS in "Windows Virtual PC" (note that this is *not* the same as "Virtual PC 2007"). If I configure the VM to use my host's wired Ethernet connection, the guest OS can always see the machines on my local network and can always reach the Internet just fine. On the other hand, if I configure the VM to use only my host's wireless connection then the guest OS can still see machines on my local network but CANNOT reach the Internet, except very intermittently (e.g., for maybe 1-2 minutes every hour or so).
I've tried to anticipate the questions you might ask so here is some additional information:
The computer is a Lenovo W500 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. The wireless network adapter is an "Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN".
My Internet connection is via AT&T DSL using a wire2 wireless modem/router.
I have all the updates from Microsoft and Lenovo for this machine. It is 100% up to date with the latest patches and drivers.
I'm running the 64-bit version (or at least I used the 64 bit installer) of "Windows Virtual PC" which I downloaded  from this link.
I am *not* running and I did not download "XP Mode".
When the guest OS loses it's connection to the Internet the following message appears in the Windows Event Log:
"Name resolution for the name address.yahoo.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded."
I am able to ping an external machines outside my network but only if I use the IP address. If I specify the host name it cannot be resolved.
ARE YOU GETTING THE IMPRRESSION THIS IS A DNS PROBLEM??? It looks like I do not have access to a DNS when using the host's wireless connection.
On the host OS, the "Virtual PC Network Filter Driver" *IS* installed and selected under my "Wireless Network Connection Properties" settings.
Below are the results of running ipconfig on the guest OS and then the host OS. Note that I am able to ping 192.168.1.254 from the host OS but not from the guest OS. I think this is the crux of the problem.
Here's what I get from an ipconfig /all executed on the guest OS:

    Hello,
I am not very familiar wth Microsoft Security Essentials, but believe that it just makes use of the existing Windows Firewall which is present with the operating system.
To me it is odd that the guest OS reports 192.168.1.254 as the IP address for its gateway and DHCP server yet it cannot access them when pinged.  Let's try pinging from host to guest (and vice-versa)  and see what happens:
From the host OS at 192.168.1.78, try pinging the guest OS at 192.168.1.75.
Then, from the guest OS at 192.168.1.75, trying ping the host OS at 192.168.1.78.
Is each operating system able to ping each other?

  • Firefox leaking DNS queries when using a proxy

When configuring firefox to use a PAC file for proxy configuration, or when using the "system proxy settings" option, firefox queries the internal DNS server for every request, instead of using the proxy. I've see other "bugs" people have mentioned when using a socks proxy that sound similar, but this happens with just a regular proxy in my example (over port 8080)

    Hi,
Which edition of windows server you are running?
You can point your clients to proxy server via GPO or GPP:
    For previous version:
    userconfig->policy->
    windows
    settings->
    internet
    explore
    maintence
    And the later version:
    user
    config->preference->control panel settings->internet settings->new

  • How do I set DNS order when using a VPN?

Hi, to increase my data security when using local hotspots and WI-FI, I've set up a PPTP server on my home network and connect to it using my MBP OSX 10.5.4. So far, everything's fine.
But I found that the VPN connection will still try to resolve host names using the DNS of the underlying WLAN/UMTS connection. Which is bad for two reasons:
First, my local network at home *doesn't permit DNS* access other than the internal DNS. So, all connection attempts time out three times, keeping me waiting in the meantime until it proceeds to connect to my internal DNS.
Second, internal hosts are *not visible* when using external DNS. Obviously... so just adjusting the firewall and allowing external DNS isn't even a solution.
I've tried all kinds of settings, set my VPN as the default connection, manually added DNS settings to it or read about the inner workings of the resolv library of OSX. After a very easy initial setup, I'm stuck due to a tiny detail that keeps me from using the VPN. Is there anything I can do to actually use VPN in a proper way?
    Regards,

  • Adjusting Internet Explorer settings when used within VFP9

I have created a form and placed and OLEControl OleClass Shell.Explorer.2 into it.
    I can using statements like
    Thisform.HTMLViewer.Navigate(m.tcUrl)
    m.loDocument = Thisform.HTMLViewer.Object.Document
get to show web pages and get access to properties and attributes within the web Document.
However, I am finding that numerous web pages (not under my control) contain Scripting errors.
When using standalone IE under the Options settings I have "Display a notification about every script error" turned off.
However, when using IE within the VFP9 form I get an IE dialog showing me all these Script errors on the sited visited.
Does anyone know how to turn these off within the VFP9 OleControl environment?
Any examination of the OleControl object does not show anything that is likely to have the desired effect.

  • Effect of Adobe "print" settings when using PDF-Maker or printing to PDF

I have accidentally found that the fonts and ('microscopic') visual appearance of a document can change depending upon the setting of the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" which is accessed under Print > Properties > Adobe PDF Settings from within MS Word (2003).  [Acrobat 9.1.0 Pro (trial)].
I had initially thought this was a difference between the print-to-PDF route, and the PDF-Maker route.  There may be a difference, but the more important effect is the settings on the PDF printer, which you might not think to set if using the PDF-Maker. That is, the settings of the PDF printer affect the result of using the PDF-Maker.
Apparently it doesn't matter whether 'system fonts' are embedded in the document or not (for this example).
    Examples follow.
    —DIV
P.S. See my initial query at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/419516.

I am struggling a bit to make sense out of all the files, but a general comment on the process is this. PDF Maker is basically a preprocessor for the Adobe PDF printer. The settings in the PDF Maker preferences can override the settings in the printer. What PDF Maker does is to basically create PDF Marks in the PS file that the printer creates to allow for Distiller to create bookmarks and such. For a comparison, you need to see which job settings are used in each and the options that each job settings uses. Including the system fonts in the PS does not make any difference except to make the PS file smaller. The system will go get the fonts at the time that Distiller creates the PDF (at least that is supposed to be the process). The job settings file will make a difference about whether a font will be embedded or not. As I recall, there were different fonts embedded and used in various versions of your PDFs. The fonts can be viewed with the font tab of the document properties.
This does not answer the questions, but may give you some idea about the process and what to look for as you create these files. It may be that different job settings are used and such, causing a comparison of apples and oranges. I don't have time to look further now, but that might give you some things to consider. (I may not have helped much here since my comments are apparently similar to what I said in the other post).

  • Mail won't connect to SMTP server when using wireless instead of ethernet

I receive the following error message ONLY when I am online via a wireless connection, but not when I am online via an ethernet cord:
*This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The connection to the server "smtp.XXXXX.com" on port 2525 timed out.*
(note that XXXX is just the name of my mail server that I've removed for security reasons)
I am able to receive email fine regardless of whether I'm using a wireless or ethernet connection.
Any thoughts? I've occasionally run into this issue before (at coffee shops and such) and think it may have something to do with the type of wireless connection (too weak, low security, other?) I'm particularly stumped about this one though since it's simply the wireless network at my college which has worked fine in the past (though perhaps they did change something?)
    Thanks!

That's because the internet provider whom you are connecting to via wireless is blocking that port/server address as a security measure.
Unless you have an account with whom the host is, you wont be able to send emails...
you could try setting the outgoing port to one of the following you could have some luck, no guarantee's though...
    21, 25, 5521, 5525, 7721, 7725
    hope that works

  • Need to Set Current Row when Using Built-in Data Control Delete Operation?

I have an af:table bound to a ViewObject (VO) collection (no Entity Object) - within each row, I include a column that contains a 'Remove' command button so the user can remove the row. I add the command button by dragging/dropping the built-in delete operation from the VO on the Data Control Palette. When I use this as is (no changes), the Remove button always deletes the first row in the collection, not the selected row. Do I need to add code to set the current row, and if so can someone please provide an example and specify where I need to add? thanks.

I just want to delete (or remove) it from the VO. Data for this VO is not on the database.
The function is doing what I want it to do (delete from the VO), its just always deleting the first row, versus the selected row. I select the command button next on a column next to an item further down in the list and it deletes the first row. The problem is setting the selected row to be removed - I thought setting the current row would be taken care of by the SelectListener?

  • Camera settings when using Aperture

    In this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24520115#24520115
I give the advice that it is best to only set ISO, aperture and shutter speed on the camera when shooting RAW. Leave the rest at the camera defaults.
    Is that good advice?
While YMMV based on the camera model, in general it seems that there is no guarantee that Aperture can understand or honor any other camera settings besides the Big Three. Note I include white balance as one to leave alone!
Does Apple provide any advice on this?

I suggest the following as a conceptual framework.
Cameras today do two things that are best thought of as distinct families of operatons.  They _record data_, and they _make pictures_.
I use my camera as a data recorder.  I then upload the data to my computer, and use Aperture (and other software programs) to make pictures from the data I recorded.  The camera saves this data in RAW files.
As an almost universally applicable rule, computers do a better job making pictures than cameras do.  (Personally, I would like to see this distinction made real: I don't want to pay for camera bodies that do any more computing than data recording and display requires.  How many Sony cameras -- just to pick on the brand I use -- have ever been used to show slideshows on Bravia TVs?)
The settings that are important for data recording are (as you listed) those for _exposure_: duration (stupidly known as "shutter speed"), aperture (I suggest "hole size"), and (as I understand it) signal amplification (stupidly known as ISO).  Everything else (including White Balance) are, literally, post-processing operations.  ("Post-processing" is, afaik, a short form of "Post-exposure processing".)  The other exposure settings are important, but not usually thought of as settings: focal length, focus distance, location and direction of camera.
The above is for RAW data recording.  JPG is not a  light data format, it is an image format.  As such, JPG requires post-processing.  For me, JPG is a quick-and-dirty, proofing format.  It has its uses.  I almost never use it.

Not that I know of.  Apple prefers to flood valleys and let users figure out where to build their vacation homes and how to not crash their boats on submerged rocks.  They have mastered the art of presenting appealing vacation-lands.  Part of that is _not_ listing rules for use beyond the most general, and certainly not letting users know how cold it gets at night or that scorpions can nest in your slippers.  Specifically, they remove any odor of engineering from every product they sell.  The advice you are asking for is good, useful, and ... (broadly) engineering.  Apple prefers (imho) to have its users provide that to those who seek it, so that those who don't seek it won't be discouraged from buying the vacation package .

  • Settings when using mp4 files from Samsung GS3

    Hi,
Does anyone know the settings I should select when creating a New PE10 Project and using mp4 files from a Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone?
    Thanks

    Ms Spielberg
If you are using video files from the Samsung Galaxy S3, from what I have read, it offers 1080p up to 30, that being 1920 x 1080 @ 30 progressive frames per second. Is that correct? If so, please consider.
The project preset should match the properties of your source media. In setting the Premiere Elements 10 Windows project preset (new project dialog), the choice of one of the FIip project presets range from frames sizes 640 x 480 to 1280 x 720. So, they would not be a match.
Consequently, I would ask you to consider the project preset if your source media from this Samsung Galaxy S3 are as I have read 1080p30.
NTSC (or PAL as the case may be)
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p30 or DSLR 1080p30 @ 29.97
In Premiere Elements 10 after you set the project preset, then you import your media with Get Media.
    a. If you can connect your phone to the computer, you could explore Get Media/Flip/AVCHD/Cameras, Phones or Removable Drive as I think SG is suggesting.
    or
    b. If your phone files are saved to a hard drive location, then Get Media/Files and Folders.
Are you also asking for export suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Why do I have to change printer settings when using Photoshop tiff?

I'm creating a tithe envolope for my church. The text portions were created in the psd using the text tool of course. But, for our church logo, I used a 300 dip tiff, scaled and positioned it at the top left part of the layout. This is all being done inside a life-size area using guide lines to simulate the edges of the envelope. Then I save the entire thing out from Photosop as a tiff. I created a MS Word doc and used Insert>Picture to place the tiff at a place in the Word doc that puts it in the right location when envelopes are loaded into the laserjet printer.
Here's the glitch. If I let the Word doc print at it's default resolution of 300 dpi, the church logo shows up looking very ragged/pixelated. Only by going through the hassle of resetting the printer properties each time to 600 dpi do I get a smooth, clean output. What's going on?

Sounds like an issue with the print driver not retaining previous settings to me.
Keep in mind that printer settings are saved with some kinds of documents (e.g., PSD files).  I'm not sure if that's the case with a TIFF, but if so, make sure you save the TIFF file after you print so the settings will be available next time you print it.
There is a known issue with some drivers where you have to go through a few extra steps to get them to retain the settings you make in the Photoshop dialog, but I don't see how that might apply here.  To see if it does, do the following:
    File - Print.
In the Photoshop print dialog, make whatever settings you like.
Click the [ Print Settings... ] Button, and exit the print driver dialog with [ OK ].
    Click [ Print ].
    Save and Close your document.
    Open the document again.
    File - Print.
Click the [ Print Settings... ] button.
    Is your dpi preference remembered?

  • IMovie '11 skips when using built-in MacBook camera

I use my MacBook's built-in camera along with iMovie to create my video blogs for one of my sites. Only, occasionally, in the past, it has skipped while recording very long sports segments, . . . what I thought might have been a hard drive issue.
Since upgrading to iMovie '11, it constantly skips through the recording process, in short 90 second segments, so that my clip is not useable. Not cool when I am getting exclusive interviews, etc. I produce a new video every week, and the (required) upgrade to Snow Leopard and iMovie '11 is the only thing that has changed.
Is anyone else having problems with the video skipping and the audio completely dropping in and out?
Thanks, in advance, for your responses.

    (1) First things I suggest you verify that:
     • you have LOTS of free space on your disk. (yes, I saw 100GB. Is it accurate?)
     • no other apps, widgets, or background functions (TimeMachine, checking for new Mail, etc.)
are running while you are recording.
     • you are not using File Vault.
    (2) Your posted system info shows you are using Mac OS X (10.6.4). Apply the latest Combo Update as follows:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test iSight. Reconnect needed peripherals and test again.
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that the update worked.)
    (3) If the problem remains, try making a recording using QuickTime Player to see if it records smoothly. If so, reinstalling iMovie may restore its proper function.

  • Monitor power settings when using HDMI to external TV

    Folks
My monitor powers up just fine according to the 5 min setting I have. However, if it's projecting a movie to a TV, it never sleeps the monitor. Any way to change this behavior?
    Thx

    Hi,
Another workaround method is you can customize the option called: Choose what closing the lid does
in Power settings. Then choose Do nothing.
Then when you play movie through TV, you can close your laptop lid.

Very odd because this was a known issue that was "corrected" in 11.1.2.0. If you are certain that you are using 11.1.2.0, I would recommend the following:
    1. Verify that you are using the latest supported JRE which is 1.6.0_33. If not, uninstall ALL previous versions before installing the new. Also, be sure that ALL browsers are closed before performing the uninstallation and installation.
    2. Install patch 14037368. Be sure to read the included instructions. This patch includes numerous Forms focus, hang, and other failure fixes.
    3. Before retesting, clear the client JRE jar cache.
If this doesn't fix the problem, feel free to prepare a test case and report the problem to Support. Be sure your test case is as simple as possible and can be easily setup in Support and run. Do not send complete applications. The test case should contain only the code necessary to reproduce the problem. It might help to also mention bug 8485711 which was supposed to be fixed in 11.1.2.0

  • What DNS settings to use in server setup with a time capsule

I have a mac mini and am to install leopard server on it for our office.
i think the standard install is for me...small business needing filesharing and vpn access only. We have outsourced exchange which i'm probably going to keep, and also an outsourced web server.
I had a trial run at install and came across some problems (clients couldn't use vpn or ichat) so thought I better check my assumptions with you experts!
i presume DHCP will be run by the time capsule, and 5 or 6 macbooks will share the broadband connection. Got to the 'Network address pane' and it had an IP and subnet assigned by the time capsule (10.0.2.2, 255.255.255.0).
I clicked next and got the 'network names' pane...maybe this is where i went wrong...I set primary DNS name as macserver.[mycompany].com and the computer name as Mac Server.
I went through the rest of the set up...added some users and file sharing is all work fine. Client machines auto set up via directory utility
    PROBLEMS:
iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
    VPN says internet connection problem
i can access internet from clients and server machine; can file share no problem.
There is something obvious that I am missing...

iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
It would help if you quoted the actual error message, rather than some vague reference.
The chances are it's complaining about the SSL certificate that the server is using - it probably doesn't match the server name. There are many reasons for this, but the upshot is that you need an SSL certificate that is valid for the hostname that users use to connect to the server with.
So if you're using 'ichat.mycompany.com' as your iChat server name, you will need a SSL certificate for 'ichat.mycompany.com'. Or you'll need to turn off SSL.
You can manage SSL certificates via Server Admin.
    VPN says internet connection problem
I assume this is remote clients trying to connect to the server, right?
Have you setup all the port forwarding rules in the router to allow incoming VPN connections to get routed to the server?
