I don't want FIOS, because I can't have the phone be power locally.
Can someone from Engineering tell me why?

You have a friend in me.  I don't want FIOS either.  I spoke to
someone yesterday that regret ever considering FIOS.  Why?
After the storm, no telephone service.
But, as prisaz stated.  Verizon is phasing out the copper landline
(read the May 10, 2013 fcc.gov blog) and giving customers extreme
difficulty for not upgrading to FIOS.  At the same token, numerous
customers are pleased with FIOS; while a growing number are
becoming displeased with the service & with the slippery billing.
Is FIOS already being replaced with smartphones?

  • DSL Upgrade Pricing

I thought I would buy the starter plan to test Verizon DSL to see if the service would work decently for me. Ok, so it does reasonably well. Cool. I figured if everything went okay, I would just upgrade the speed level.
But now the upgrade price is $47/mo for 3M! Is there any way I can get the $30/mo price? For that much I might as well just go back to cable.

This is a peer support forum. For such thins as pricing you need to contact Verizon directly.

  • Slow DSL upgrade

Did everyone else who has upraded their DSL service experienced the same ludicrous timeframe as I am experiencing?  I ordered 3MB DSL on January 21st because my 768kb DSL just can't handle today's complex webpages, video, etc.  Checking online for my order's status, it is 77% complete and due on Feb. 12th.
Why on earth does it take 3 weeks to "install"?  They said I wouldn't need a new modem or anything, which surprised me, so I figured I'd get the improved speed within a day or two.  The clerk at the Verizon Store said nothing about it taking 3 weeks!  Is this typical?  If there is no equipment change, then it must be just software at the server or something;  how could it possibly take so long?

Hello hafcanadian...Sorry that it is taking so long to upgrade your service. Normally it takes a couple of days 2-3, not 3 weeks. There could be an error in your order that needed fixing if you don't mind filling out this form https://www98.verizon.com/content/verizonsupport/ so I can access your account to see what is going on. Thank you!

  • Wireless speed drop?

I just had my bellsouth dsl upgraded to 3MB/sec, and I tested my Windows computer upstairs that is wired through my new Airport Extreme 802.11n basestation and got over 3 MB/sec download speed and 384 kb/sec upload speed using Speakeasy dsl test. When I tried the same test downstairs using my brand new Macbook Pro connected wirelessy to the same basestation, Speakeasy stated that my download speed is just over 700 KB/sec and almost 300 kb/sec upload. Any reason why this is happening? Is this normal or is there some sort of setting adjustment in the utility to increase my wireless download speed?

Check the signal & noise using iStumbler. From wired connections you should always get the max. I get my wireless max from all floors, but again it all depends on your walls, and any devices you may have (phones, microwaves, etc.)

  • Broadband Speeds are 0.4mbps or lower

Hi I have had this prob since day one of getting BT Broadband unlimited back at the start of April.
I am told it's a hot VP issue but surely this problem shouldn't be allowed. I'll explain as much as possible below.
I have contacted BT via online chat and phone so many time's i've lost count, I have had 7 enginners out to ma home aswell.
My line can support up to 3.8mbps and if im lucky I used get around 2mbps during the day which obviously is offpeak, but in the evening at around 4pm-12am It plummets to 0.4mbps  AT MOST, but most times it hovers around 0.2.  But this past 3 months I've been getting 0.4mbps all day and night, even at 3-4am in the morning.
All engineer vists have told me i'm synced good and my line is perfect and it's down to a hot VP issue, however on the phone they persist the problem is something else and it can be easily fixed and they keep sending out engineers who then say its a hot VP issue over and over...its gotten so bad I even know the engineer pretty well now.
Now i understand in the evening speeds can drop due to higher volume of traffic but am I really supposed to pay £16 a month for speeds of 0.4mbps day and night?
I have also noticed my ping spikes alot day or night regardless if i have good speed or not, I seen my ping reach over 16000ms quite a few times, but when playing online games like Second Life my ping will hover around 8000ms.
Sorting the ping though for online gaming isn't my concern, I would be happy to get my speed sorted and get around 1-3mbps during the evening if possible as 0.4mbps is unusable, it takes forever to do anything.
Please help, I'll post whatever is needed, thanks!
    David
    *EDIT*
Just to add I have everything hooked up perfectly and tried the test socket, with no extensions or ring bell added.
Few weeks back the engineer put in a BT Infinity faceplace that doesn't need any filters and told me I wouldn't need to remove the faceplace anymore for the test socket.

  • Canon imagerunner 2200 setup

    Hello all,
I had an IR2200 setup for years and now it doesn't work.
The DSL was upgraded and the ISP (Century Link) sent a tech to install a new modem which brought another wireless access point into the mix. Here was/is the setup:
    Three iMacs running OS 10.7.5
    Time Capsule
    Canon IR2200
The IR2200 was plugged into the Time Capsule via Ethernet. One iMac had the IR2200 setup and was shared on the network. All iMacs are on WiFi and, before the new DSL modem, they all could print to the IR2200.
After the DSL upgrade, I bought a new Ethernet to eliminate that potential issue since the old one was kinked a bit and then tried to setup a new printer. I setup as before all this happened - an IP printer (static IP set on printer), LPD protocol and a generic postscript driver.
I've since downloaded a PS driver from Canon dated this year, but still the connection will not be established and the printer that has the setup cannot send print jobs.
    Thanks for your time,

  • Low ftp upload

I am trying to upload a 7 GB file to an ftp server for Parallels tech support to review. The upload was going much more slowly than the 518 Kb/s rate promised by ATT. After finding that ATT had not done the DSL upgrade we ordered and getting that complete, the test now show that we are getting the promised performance from ATT. I started the upload again and for about one minute got an upload rate of 300+ Kbs then is dropped back to 55-60. I tried 2x more with only the slow rate. The computer in question is an intel imac running 11.4.11 and it is connect directly to the netopia 3346N-002 ADSL modem. The support material for netopia seems to say something about the settings on the mac but I am not quite following. I also followed another thread on here and downloaded and installed rBrowser but have no idea what to do with it to test ftp connection. The ftp connection to Parallels is through terminal commands, which netopia mentions as being a problem with MTU and packets. Any help would be great, thank you.

The following is what the terminal looks like.
I was finally able to copy.
    I turned off the Firewall.
I realized it took the password. I used 1462 from instructions downloaded from Netopia.
Any other thoughts, thank you for your patience and assistance.

  • My mac wifi connection to DSL line was down when I tried to upgrade Ipad to IOS6, and it defaulted to Ipad data line and consumed my monthly allotment of data -- How can that happen as a technical matter?

Maps did not work for me for the first week after upgrading to IOS6 on my New Ipad -- I have since learned that I exceeded my 2 gig monthly data plan and therefore I had no 4G access on my ipad, which meant Maps couldn't work while traveling.  Since I never download videos, I knew I had not knowingly downloaded that much data.  When I called AT&T, they told me that when I upgraded to IOS6 I consumed over 1 gig of data.
I did the upgrade while connected to my iMac, which in turn has a wireless connection to router connected to my home DSL line.   My wifi service has been spotty lately, possibly because router is defective.  So let's assume that when I tried to download IOS6 that my iMac did not have a good wifi connection.  Is the AT&T person correct that the download defaults to the Ipad's 4G cellular network, even though the iPad is connected to the iMac by USB cable?  I didn't think that was possible as a technical matter -- i.e., that the iMac gets automatic access to the iPad's connection to the cellular network.  (I'm sure I'm not explaining this right, I'm obviously not technical.)
Also, do you get any obvious warning or indicator on the device that you have exceeded your data limit for the month?  I sure didn't see any warning, (although I now know that I can go to Settings, then Cellular Data, then View Account and find the status of my data line account).
Thanks for any help on this.

Strange. It works fine with my setup which is no different from yours. Problem with the cable or LAN port(s)?

  • After upgrading to 3.6.8 our desktop will no longer connect to our DSL system. It downloaded and installed the upgrade then refused to connect. Help!

Background: our desktop computer started shutting off sporadically. I researched the problem, reset the memory chip, checked battery voltage on the motherboard (it was okay), resinserted the battery and tried to boot. It started up successfully and connected to the internet via our DSL line. FF had trouble opening pages due to security certificates so I checked to see if upgrades were available (3.6.8 was) and I downloaded and installed it. After that it refused to work. Apparently a setting somewhere got changed but I don't know what it might be. The DSL connection works with other computers which are wireless (the desktop has a hard connection.) Operating system is Windows XP. Other browsers do not work.

Turn off your firewall and antivirus software.

  • DSL and 9.1 to 9.2 upgrade problems?   Please Help!!

I have a Beige g3 - 300 w/ 160 megs of memory - using Netscape 7.02 and occasionally Gatesmess IE-5. I have had dial up for 5 years and recently upgraded to DSL w/ Linksys WRT54G router connected via ethernet cable. Wifes HP laptop uses the wireless.
Problem is when connected to the internet, I get a looong -(30 - 40 second) delay between selecting the url and the page loading with a "resolving host" message at the bottom of the page. The modem send light flashes every five seconds or so and once the system locks on the url it loads really fast. With the dialup there was no delay in finding the url but took a long time to load. Result is it takes about the same amount of time to browse now as before. I don't think the winbox is having the same problem.
To try to resolve the "resolving host" issue I have been trying to upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2. When I download the package from apple.com at the end I get a 127 error which reestablishes itself everytime I click OK til I force quit the System. When I restart the computer, the file is on desktop OS 9.2 update.smi. First I opened the file w/ stuffit 5.2 and tried to install it following the instructions (sharing off, OS 9 extensions only etc) and about 4 minutes into the process I get the Bomb error 10. I have downloaded this three times and upgraded the Stuffit to 7.03 but am having the same problem. In order to get to 9.2.2 you have to upgrade to 9.2.1 first and that is what I am doing.
Anybody have any ideas either on the "resolving host" issue or the upgrade problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Beige g3 - 300mghz 160 meg memory   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Thanks Grant.
I read the article and it was of some help. Reference TCP/IP control panel settings. I called Commspeed support and they gave me their three current DNS numbers. I typed them per article and nothing - dead. Called them back and they gave me the typical winbox answers "No hable apple" so left to my own devices and considering the stratigies suggested in the article I did two things.
I opened the TCP/IP control panel and deleted the Name Server Address - As they are supposed to be assigned by the server. There was also a check box that said use 802.3 which was checked. I unchecked it and tried the internet. Blam it was right there. I don't know which stratigy worked as I did them simultaneously.
Still don't know about upgrading to 9.2.
    Thanks again,
    Bill

  • Upgraded DSL Modem, Now Bonjour Doesn't Work

I upgraded my Qwest DSL Modem from an ActionTec GT-701 to an ActionTec PK5000 and now my Quicksilver G4 is not available via Bonjour (I'm using it as a print server). I switched back to the old router, and it works again, so the problem def. is the new router. I tried to see if the known ports are blocked (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1629), but they don't appear to be - I turned off UPnP (Universal Plug N Play) just to be sure it didn't conflict but no joy. Somebody else out there seems to have had similar problems (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-printing-and-scanning/Beware-of-the-ActionTec-P K5000-for-wireless-printing-with-HP/td-p/267515) but I'm not sure if it's a direct match.
I upgraded to make my VOIP smoother, due to the integrated Ethernet switch in the modem. But I'm moving back to the old modem for now, and using an external switch.
Anybody have any feedback on how to configure the new DSL modem correctly so Bonjour will work? I did notice an error in the system log:
"mDNSResponder: NOTE: Wide-Area Service Discovery disabled to avoid crashing defective DNS relay 192.168.0.1."
Could that be the trouble? I did try to fix the DNS settings on the modem. Again, no success.

    Thanks for that.
Probably has an Application Layer Gateway (ALG) for SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is something iChat uses, that can not be changed from pushing SIP data to port 5060.
SIP is also used by SIP/VoIP phones which gets around Long Distance charges so many ISPs block it until you pay for the "Extra Service" which a few years ago was open anyway.
There was an International agreement that all SIP apps and equipment would use port 5060-5063. It was supposed to be accessible on a pass-through basis from one Internet Server to another but ISPs seem to have classed end users as a non through connections.
Thomson-Alcatel have had a SIP Binding as they call it since there models could run Version 3 firmware. (You had to telnet into the device to turn it off)
At version 5 firmware they changed it so that it could only be partially turned Off.
Thomson-Alcatel make devices branded for other people including the HOME HUB from BT (Formerly British Telecom) who own 99% of Landline connections in the UK (they Wholesale out both Land lines and Broadband DSL connections).
Various ISPs that supply modems often have them supplied with Branded Firmware on there. It tends to be these Branded versions that cause problems (Although the Thomson-Alcatel issue is below the Web Browser interface level).
This may give clues as to where to look and how your device maybe accessed (telnet).

  • DSL speed slow down after 10.5 upgrade :(

    Hello all,
I have a question, and need the Apple cyber-community to help me with this one.
I have A.T.& T.'s DSL service. I have a 2WIRE 1701HG router-DSL modem. I HAD 1.2mg download speed 99% of the time with MacOS 10.4.x. Yes I know that it is not very fast, but I live in the country side and am at the VERY VERY end of the line of service.
After I upgraded to MacOS 10.5.x, my down load speeds have slowed down to around 200 to 850bps. I have checked my hardware, and all seems fine. I called A.T.&.T and they ran a speed check and said I was getting 1.5 speed. Any ideas how to fix the issue?
    Thanks,
    Apple //GS

PS: "Get a Windows Vista computer!!" That was what I got from the tech at A.T.&T. "They don't have this problem....................."

  • Why is it so hard for ATT to upgrade my DSL????

I have been in contact with their representatives on here to see if I can get things resolved that way.  I would upgrade to UVerse if it was available here. It is not. Not sure why; there are more rural areas near here that have it, but not in my subdivision. So that is not an option. Everyone at ATT that I talked to said that 6M DSL is available.  Long story short is that right now when I call ATT and ask them what it up, they say that their system says that the upgrade order to 6M was completed and went through successfully (except for one time w/tech support who said his system said it was "rejected", but that might have been at the old # which was ported). However when I log into my account, it still says DSL Lite. And, as far as I know, I am still being billed for DSL Lite. They even sent a postcard via priority mail stating that my updgade order was complete. Obviousely it is not.  I agree that it SHOULD be an easy process for them. At this stage I almost want to tell them to cancel everything that is listed for this address/account # and start over to see if that will work. Either that or I will have to switch to Comcast.

So sorry for your frustrations with getting what should be a simple change in a line of programming code.I wish you well, and hope you get what was communicated to you. PLEASE, keep us informed of your outcome. The ONLY reason they should NOT be able to set you up with the 6 mbps connection speed is if your connection line length is too long to give a signal strong enough to support it. Anything else should be nothing more than changing a switch. I got 6 mbps when my service was connected, and since that is the 'max" legacy dsl speed, that is the best i could have gotten, so would be pointless to try increasing the speed any more. My local county government will not allow u-verse in this area due to monopoly restrictions (comcast has the monopoly) so "upgrading" to u-verse is not an option for the forseeable future. My area may be unique in that our local dsl service is blessed with open ports to spare. (guessing many of the dsl customers migrated to comcast for internet) Still, my written agreement clearly spells out that had I chosen lower speed to start, increasing to a faster connection speed, to the max of 6 mbps would have been a very simple change to make. It would have simply cost more per month. I have had several chats and conversations with various ATT service reps, and any and all issues I had, were resolved coutiesly and professionally.A couple of times, I was given benefit of the doubt and given the credit adjustments, no problem. Obviously, not everyone has a positive experiance with ATT customer service, otherwise, we would not have all the posts we have in reguards to it. But too, most of those get resolved with a lot of patience and a bit of persistance and time. Those of us that use these forums, also have the option of the social media customer care team, and I read post after post where they work seeming miricles quietly and quickly. I have also seen posts from folks who are in the clearly u-verse service areas and for whatever reason, get dsl connections instead of u-verse. Granted, the exception NOT the rule, but point is, even though they are new service connections, they get DSL instead of u-verse. My understaning was, and still is, new service is u-verse, and in legacy dsl areas, the equipment is maintained, but not expanded, or upgraded. And, plans are to eventually phase out the legacy dsl completely. (2020 was the last deadline i've heard.) Also, new service in the dsl areas is only available when/if an open port is available. The rule of thumb is, once u-verse goes into a service area, the legacy dsl goes away, replaced with U-verse.That being said, there are still pleanty of posts from folks in the new u-verse teritories who keep their legacy dsl connections, and as i also mentioned, exceptions are made that folks get new service with dsl rather than u-verse. , in spite of the tone of my post, I like you. You are a fount of information, and always appreciate your insight, and unofficial inside information.  You post regular, and share what you know to the best of your knowledge, and hope you will continue to do so.Often, you give the one bit of info needed to identify the specifics of an issue, and even how to outright get it fixed. To be fair, I would not have considered a connection speed increase to the max as an upgrade, but to be fair, that may in fact be one of the situations ATT considers an upgrade. No hard feelings, I hope. And apologies for any and all negative impressions I made. And to , I hpe they get your speed increase figured out and done.

  • DSL will not work after speed upgrade

I ordered a speed upgrade (from 3 to 5 down) a couple weeks ago.   On Tuesday they confirmed that they completed the order but now the DSL will not work at all.   I have an old Westell B90 Infospeed DSL modem (branded as Bell Atlantic) and they swear that the modem is not the problem.   I have been on the phone with tech support every day for a week now and still no service.    I do not believe they are actually doing anything to remedy the situation.   Twice now I was promised a tech would come to my house.   I have taken time off from work to stay home and nobody ever comes.    One day they say it can be resolved at the central office then that evening they say a tech needs to come.   I wait for tech and nobody shows so I call them back.   They then tell me again that the problem is at the central office and no need for a tech.  They have run me down this path 3 times now.   Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can actually get a tech to show up??  I think the call center people are full of lies and just passing me around to avoid the problem.   I am in Montgomery County Maryland.

Post your modem status from the modem.

  • Slow DSL - can I upgrade?

I have 3 meg DSL which is less than 1 meg in the evenings.  Can I upgrade to 7 meg service?   Would that get me more than 1 meg in the evenings?   Would dial-up be faster than 1 meg?   Does Verizon have cable?  What alternative can Verizon offer me so I have more than 1 meg in the evenings?

The issue with seeing 1Mbps at night and a speed upgrade are two separate questions, since they both involve separate methods of figuring out. In the case of the 1Mbps issue, what you're seeing is probably prime-time slowdown. Verizon will need to move you to less congested equipment and circuits, if any exists so that you can obtain the speed you're supposed to be getting on the connection. I would suggest the Verizon Direct forum over at DSLReports.com for this since they tend to be good at handling such requests. Mention the phrase "Night Time congestion" while you are telling them what is going on and they should do what they need to do to solve your issue. Failing that, contact me and I'll get you in contact with someone who will square away this issue.
As for the speed upgrade, we need to see the Transceiver Statistics from your modem to ensure the line will even support a higher speed, since you'll make bigger problems trying to get a higher speed if it cannot support it. If you don't know how to obtain this information, please tell us what modem you currently have and we'll help you get them. If the statistics look good, the second step of this would be to ask Verizon what is available. If you can get a higher speed, then by all means if you wish to order it, order it. Otherwise, leave things alone. If they say no to a higher speed, this could be from a few reasons, either there being a lack of capacity for the higher speeds, you are on a remote, or the CO has not been approved to handle a higher speed, or even an issue with their database.
As far as Cable goes, the closest thing Verizon sells to Cable is FiOS. FiOS, by nature is vastly superior to any copper-based network in regards to capacity, so unless you can get that, you're out of luck in this aspect I'm afraid! Dial-up is 48.8kbps/1000kbps so unfortunately a congested DSL line is still faster than the fastest dial-up connection you could possibly get. A higher speed package will also not get you higher speeds during the night. It will most likely show when the congestion occurs sooner, though.
