No EFI Boot option from Boot Camp-created Windows 7 USB drive?

I can't get an EFI boot option from my Win7 USB thumb drive. Previously I had been running Mavericks, and with that I was able to select either the BIOS option of the installer ("Windows" under the ALT screen) OR "EFI Boot", but now I'm only getting the bios install option.
Does anyone know the trick to installing Windows with UEFI on my late 2013 rMBP?

I have W8.1 installed under EFI on a late 2013 rMBP. Can you check your USB drive? Is it a USB2 drive?
The structure should similar to the following, and you can see the EFI files. You can try an SMC reset - Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and check if it changes the behavior.

• How to edit GRUB boot options from within Arch.

Hello!
I'm having a problem with scanlines (both in X and tty), and I think that the solution is the vga= boot option.  I, however cannot edit the GRUB boot options from within GRUB, because the commands go off my screen (overscan.)
I was wondering if there is a way to edit the default GRUB options from withing Arch.  I have GRUB on /dev/sdb0 and chainload with the windows bootloader, it it matters.
Thanks,

• Boot options duplicated; Boot Camp Assistant newly non-functional

Short version:
1. Up to tonight, my hard drive was encrypted using PGP Whole Disk Encryption -- secure boot and all. Had Boot Camp working fine with it.
2. Attempted to install OS X 10.6.5 despite PGP warnings to decrypt first. Ended up with an unbootable OS X partition. Decrypted drive in Windows, got back into OS X.
3. Disk Utility returned a few errors on OS X partition. Quickly fixed those by booting from Snow Leopard CD and running it.
4. What I'm now noticing is that when I hold down the option key, I'm given duplicate options. Instead of "OS X Partition Name Here" and "Windows 7 Name Here", I've got a duplicate for the former. So my options are "OS X", "OS X", or "Windows".
5. And, when I try to run Boot Camp Assistant out of curiosity, I'm told that I either need one big non-partitioned drive, OR existing partitions created by Boot Camp. I already did that.
Any thoughts on fixing #4 or #5? Resetting PRAM doesn't help. Windows does not show as an option in "Startup Disk" in system preferences. But the Windows partition boots just fine when holding option on restart.

And since I can't edit my original post any longer, here's what fixed the redundant boot option thing:
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20091111185717745
Worked like a charm. Fixed the duplicate "OS X" option on boot, and both OSes boot normally. Can now click past the first few options in Boot Camp Assistant, so I'm assuming that's working normally now also.
Still no Windows option in Startup Disk, but apparently that's related to my use of NTFS-3g? Thought that was fixed.
sudo fdisk /dev/rdisk0 is now:

Only thing I'm worried about now is whether I might have damaged any files though any of this crap. Don't know if I can check for that, or if I should worry about it.

• Error "Can't find boot device by boot options" when boot from ISO via AMT

Hello.
When I try to boot from ISO CD via AMT I got an error message:
"Can't find boot device by boot options"
Settings are similar to what I made in HP 8100, 8200 etc - SOL/IDER/KVM, network access enabled
Where could be a problem?
Prod. name: HP Compaq Elite 8300 Microtower PC
Prod. number: B0F41EA

Just wanted to follow up with this as I got a response from HP. It looks like it is at least the 2.9 BIOS version that has this issue. I know that at least the 2.51 BIOS version is unaffected.

Encore CS5 won't boot up from desktop in Windows 7 64bit version.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for that reply.
I have always opened it separately from Premiere in the past.  In this instance I have some MPEG files unrelated to Premiere.
No problems during install or reinstall.  No error messages when clicking on the desktop icon.
It seems to not be part of the Cloud suite at all.
The system is Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit with 16gb memory i7-2700K CPU @ 3.5Ghz.
Lets know if more information needed.  One thread suggested that it needs an update to pxengine (owned by Roxio) but I could not locate it at their site – it appears to be integrated into their programs, of which I have Roxio Creator 2012 installed.

• Rescue and Recovery 4.5: Boot Environment does not list Backups on USB Drive

Hello,
I have a fresh installed Windows 7 on a X 230 and am now setting up my backup. The notebook came without an OS so I installed Win7, all drivers and the Thinkvantage Software myself. Then I made a backup with Rescue and Recovery 4.5 to an external USB 3.0 HDD. The Backup is listed in the Windows program, but when I boot to Rescue and Recovery, the backup is not listed.
Since there arent any options I could change during the backup or the recovery, I have no idea what went wrong..
Thanks!

In the standalone boot of RNR, go to the advanced GUI, chose Restore.  After a few screens, you will see a restore from location, default is Local Hard drive.  This is a drop down list.  USB option is available in the drop down list. The USB must be connected during the standalone boot. If the backup is NOT the same UUID as your system, check the box that says show backups from all systems.
Also read my post dated Nov 22,2011 .  RNR backup reverts to local.  This may not apply to USB backups.

• I want to create a USB drive for Mountain Lion and have no discs

I have a nice shiny new 27: iMac and was hoping to create a USB boot drive in case I need it. The iMac does not come with a disk drive and Mountain Lion is purchased via the App Store, so there are no disks with which to build the boot drive. I tried downloading Mountain Lion again from the App Store, but it tells me Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. (yes, the computer that is running Mountain Lion right now)
iTunes Support is not very helpful. They keep telling me that I can't make a boot drive and are unable to help me download if from the App Store.
Surely Apple has created a way to build a boot drive in the case of emergency. There will be no way to defrag my hard drive if I am unable to boot from the USB drive.

You have one on your iMac, the recovery partition. Your iMac is not compatible with the App Store version so don't try.
Install OSX on to a thumb drive if you want, it's a waste of time compared to using Recovery.

• Installing from another linux but without USB drive nor CD ROM

Hello,
I own a CL56 (laptop) with a dual boot "windows legacy" / "ubuntu hardy" / ...
on the remaining space I'm trying to install Archlinux (for a "trial" boot system )
My clamshell is far too old to boot on USB drive and my CD ROM player just melt last week, so I have to install it from Ubuntu (or windows).
So I installed Unetbootin and ...
- dlded 2009.08/archlinux-2009.08-netinstall-i686.iso
on Unetbootin
- chose (x) diskimage [ISO] /path/to/archlinux-2009.08-netinstall-i686.iso
- selected Type : HDD, Drive : /
rebooted and :
Got a kernel panic and a stupid error about a CD ROM not found !
forii, wikis etc. seems to have contradictory advices, that's why I'm going back to the source.
But the real question is not : how to use unetbootin but : how to install archlinux from another distrib (ie ubuntu)

• Bootcamp 5 fails to create installation USB drive

Bootcamp version 5, running on Mountain Lion, keeps failing on creating the Windows 7 Startup disk. I'm using a 8gb USB drive and it formats it without any problems. The process will carry on until around 50% of copying installation files and then fails.
I've tried 2 different USB Flash drives and I've check the ISO image for Windows 7.
Can anyone help me with a solution? Or why this is happening.
Thanks

It means you must have windows in a file instead of a disk and the file's extension is ".iso". For Example: WIN7INST.iso. .ISO files are the windows counterpart of Mac's .dmg files. How do you create a windows .iso files? I perfectly don't know but surely there's a program such as Disk Utility that can rip a Windows installer CD/DVD into a file with the .iso extension.
Back to you question: you need Windows in an .iso file format instead than a CD/DVD.
By the way... I'm not going to suggest you to do what I'm going to say because I'm not sure it always work but I sometimes rip a Windows CD/DVD with Disk Utility in "master" format (no compression) with .cdr extension. Then i just change the .cdr in .iso and it works in windows.
Why using a .ISO on a USB drive instead a CD/DVD? Becaus installation may be faster or in case you don't have a Superdrive, either internal or external, but necessary for installing Windows in BootCamp. From a generic CD/DVD reader, Windows installer will not start on a Mac, at least on my... dead  late 2011 MacBook Pro.
Cheers

• Moving Time Machine backups from Time Capsule to External USB Drive

Hi all,
hoping someone out there can help I'm trying to move my time machine backups from my old Time Capsule to my external USB drive. I've already used the Airport Utility to "archive" my Time Capsule to a USB connected WD MyBook Elite.
Right now my WD MyBook Elite has both the archive, and recent (roughly 5 backups) of both my MacBook & MacMini. I've tried to follow the seemingly simple steps located in the FAQ's here Copy NETWORK backups to be used LOCALLY , but I cannot past step 1.
Right-click the new volume on your desktop or Finder sidebar and select Get Info. If the Ignore ownership on this volume box is checked, click the padlock at the lower right and enter your Admin password at the prompt. Then remove the check mark from the box and close the window.
There is no option to "Ignore Ownership" in Snow Leopard for the Spars Bundle or when expanding it to see its folders.
Any advice?
I'm basically trying to combine my backups to unit them into one seemless backup each for:
Mac Mini & MacBook.
Thank you in advance.

That's not referring to the sparse bundle you're copying FROM, but the new volume you just formatted on the USB drive you're copying TO.
If you didn't just format the partition, that box may not be shown -- it not, there's no problem and you don't need to do anything in that step.
I'm basically trying to combine my backups to unit them into one seemless backup each for:
Mac Mini & MacBook.
I'm not sure what you mean by that: you cannot combine the backups of two different Macs. You can put them both on the same hard drive, either in two different partitions, or, if any are going to be backed-up over a network, in a sparse bundle.
If I've misunderstood, please clarify exactly what you're trying to do.

• Trying to move backup from Time Capsule to external USB drive

As per the title, I'm getting rid of my Time Capsule and am trying to move the backups to an external USB drive instead.
Initially I used AirPort Utility 5.6.1 to archive to the USB drive. However, when I switched TM back on, it wanted to do a full backup rather than incremental.
I then found Pondini's very useful page at http://pondini.org/TM/18.html and decided to try it this method instead. It also made me realise that I'd incorrectly formatted the new drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when in fact the TM backup was case sensitive. So I thought this could have been the issue, but still persued Pondini's method. I formatted the drive again, this time in the correct format, and followed Pondini's guide, copying the Backups.backupdb folder from the sparse bundle to the new drive, which completed fine. But unfortunately, TM again wanted to backup everything from scratch when I turned it back on.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

So it looks like I was wrong on both counts.
I misunderstood AirPort Utility's archive feature. I failed to realise that archiving actually puts the sparse bundle in a separate folder called "Data Archive" on the new drive, so of course TM won't continue using that existing backup.
It would also seem that I was incorrect in thinking that Pondini's method didn't work. When I tried it again, I realised that TM was in fact continuing the backup. Initially it looks like it's going to do a big backup, but actually only backed up a few hundred megabytes, then everything was back to normal.
Incidentally, I've also found that if you do use AirPort Utility to archive the backup, you can effectively using Pondini's "How can I copy my TM backups to a different location?" by mounting the spare bundle in the "Data Archive" folder, then dragging Backups.backupdb to the root of the drive.
I just wanted to post this for completeness and in case it helps anyone in the future.

• How to add a kernel-lts boot option from grub ?

Hey,
