No empty trash icon in finder

Just purchased a new iMac. In the Finder there is a "Secure Empty Trash" but not an "Empty Trash." Is it gone? How do you get it back?

  • Trash icon empty (Have items)

This started happening yesterday. I booted up and placed some items in the trash. The trash icon appears empty? I did a permissions repair, restarted and it is still appearing that way.
    What can I do?
    Thanks!

Partially solved, I was able to select "empty trash" under the Finder menu, it worked. New items going into the trash now result in the proper icon. At least for the moment...

  • Secure Empty Trash vs Empty Trash, Hangs and Advanced Finder Pref.

I've had my intel-based iMac for a couple of weeks and I've been getting a frequent hanging trash problem that causes me to restart my Mac far too often. Restarting the iMac fixes it but I don't know what the problem is to begin with. It seems to happen when I have over 10MB in the trash and I choose "Secure Empty Trash."
While I'm on the topic of "Secure Empty Trash," won't "Empty Trash" do the same thing SECURELY since I've previously checked it off in my Finder Preferences? Is the "double selection" of secure empty trash part of the problem (i.e. selecting it when I go to empty the trash as well as having it selected in my finder preferences)? Any and all help is appreciated.

Yes it's the same if you choose Secure Empty Trash from the Finder or if you have it selected in the Finder advanced preferences. The thing is electing to Secure Empty the trash may take a lot longer to empty because it does either a 7 pass or 35 pass write over the files and that can take a long time to do for large files.
As a test it took me just over 3 minutes to Secure Empty a 175MB file.
Something you should do though seeing as you've had to forcefully shut down your iMac a few times is Run Disk Utilities. Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left and under the First Aid tab click on Repair Disk Permissions then Verify Disk.

  • Emptying Trash Is Taking Forever!?!?

I'm trying to empty my trash bin and it is literally taking FOREVER! At the pace it is going it could take weeks... Is there something which may be slowing this process down or a way to make it clear at the trash bin faster?
    Thanks!

How much data is in your trash?
If you have several gigs of data, it could take a while, especially if you're using secure empty trash.
In finder, open preferences and click on advanced. Confirm that Empty Trash securely is not checked.

  • How do I make trash not do a "Secure Empty Trash"?

Here is what's happening to my Trash whenever I move a file to it for deletion. Ever since I changed the Trash settings to "Secure Empty Trash", and I securely empty the trash when it only have 1 or 2 files in it, it comes up saying there's like 20. when there isn't...so help?
OR Could someone tell me how to chnage the Trash settings so it is just "Empty Trash".
    Thankayou.

Uncheck "empty Trash securely" in Finder > Preferences > Advanced tab.

  • Emptying Trash is a problem...

Recently I've not been able to see 'Empty Trash' in the Finder.
What I can see is 'Secure Empty Trash".
Both work and there are no issues, other than I have to key 'T' in Help to find 'Empty Trash".
I'm sure that I'm missing the obvious but I'd appreciate a helping hand.
    Many thanks.

Thanks very much for your swift and simple solution.
It's easy when you know how.
    Very best regards.

  • Help me empty trash, adobe flashplayer installer .dmg in use

i attempted to update my adobe flashplayer because i was prompted, but then became skeptical, and moved it to the trash. now i can't even empty it out of the trash. i get a message that tells me "The operation can’t be completed because the item “AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller_15au_ltrosxd_aaa_aih.dmg” is in use." ... i know i was just in the very first stages and i did not complete the download or update. i want that file out of my computer. how do i do this? please and thank you

What is supposed to happen when I hold down the option key and click on Empty Trash in the finder?  It seems that Empty Trash is frozen now.  Here's a screen shot.
I had to force quit finder because it was still frozen after 10 minutes.  I decided to do without the blight on humanity that is Adobe Flash Player and I'm trying to rid my hard drive.  If this isn't going to do any harm (although it's impossible to locate it) I'll just leave it.
    Thank you.

  • Empty Trash not available

I recently tried to delete a file from the trash bin and noticed that the empty trash option from the finder menu had dissapeared. I can still delete items by using the secure empty trash feature from the finder drop down menu but when i control-click on the trash bin in the dock and try to empty trash nothing happens. I have tried holding the option key when i delete but that does nothing. I have also gone into the disk utility and carried out a disk repair and repair permissions but neither seems to make any difference. I'm slightly concerened that this may me the first sighns of something more serious. Can anyone help.

    download Onyx.
    open it.
when it is done with its opening 'routine', click 'parameters', then Finder, then check 'Show Empty Trash item' under 'Finder Menu'.
    good luck!

  • Secure Empty Trash vs. Empty Trash

I just finished editing many gigs of old video footage and I am ready to delete them. Should I use the Secure Empty Trash-In the Finder (which will most likely take a long time to delete) versus just Empty Trash...I know S.E.T. will completely remove the files which make them unrecoverable. If I delete by using just the empty trash...am I still taking up HD space?
    Thanks...
    Henri

    Hello,
When you empty the trash, the files are still physically there. But, the space they occupied is marked as available for use. So, they are not taking-up any space. That space is immediately freed, and made available for use by the next program or file that needs it.
But, because it is stored magnetically, that file can be retrieved by manually (or with a special program) going back and locating where that file was stored and re-assigning a name and a pointer to it.
The only difference between regular empty trash and secure-empty trash, is that the secure option will immediately over-write that deleted file's space with garbage a couple of times to make it more difficult for someone to recover (or undelete).
That is the only difference. Otherwise, the space is still storing magnetic information regardless of which method you use. But, it is not wasting space either way. The space is marked as free, and will be used as needed.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to force empty trash?

    Hello
I can't empty my trash. I get these signs:
"This operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
"Empty Trash", and "Secure Empty Trash" in the finder doesn't work
"command, option, shift, delete" - doesn't work either
Who can help me with this?
    Thank you

usually, pressing option an selecting +empty trash+ from the finder menu does the trick. if it don't, you will have to get some panadol and work yourself through that article
    good luck !

  • Can't empty trash and icon never indicates files are in the trash.

What could cause this? Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X?
Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least.
Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that. Or is it? Let's hear it, guys and gals!
    Thanks!

Sorry, I posted my last message in the wrong thread without realizing it. This is what I meant to post:
Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
