No enter sign after PRAM and PMU reset

I have an ibook 900, 14 inch, which is having video problems,so I reset the PRAM and PMU and now it restarts to a blue screen with a '?' in a folder. I try to restart in target mode but my G5 will not "see" the ibook. I have tried the c and x start up procedures along with the O F command to get into openfirmware (which does let me enter "printevn, mac-boot"), but still after the chime at startup I now get the gray screen with the apple and spinning icon then the apple turns into a do not enter sign. Have I toasted the ibook? I have looked at many discussions, and followed many links, HELP!

Do you have the original install disks? You might need to run the Apple Hardware Test. It sounds like the hard drive is no longer available. This could be due to either a hardware or software problem. You could test the hard drive with the AHT or test the file directories with the Disk Utility on the Mac OS X installer to figure out what's going on.

  • No Bluetooth even after PRAM and PMU resets, fully updated Leopard

Subject should explain pretty much everything. I reset the PRAM and PMU to try to get my Bluetooth back (it doesn't even appear in System Profiler). Still nothing. Leopard with all updates. Any suggestions, before I take it in?

Unlike the previous PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD), the AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0 functions are on separate cards.
If Bluetooth system preferences does not show up under Hardware system preferences...
    1. Check for software/firmware updates on the web.
    2. Check the Bluetooth card flex cable. Make sure the cable is not damaged and fully seated.
    3. Check the hard drive flex to main logic board.
    4. Replace the Bluetooth card.
    5. Replace the hard drive flex.
    6. Replace the logic board.

Yet Network control panel says I am connect to the modem, and Network Diagnosis says I am connected to the Internet. It's like the blind man who has eyes that cannot see. BTW, I am not some newbee. I have been a Machead since the early nineties and set up a half dozen networks, including the one I am using at home to which the iMac mysteriously is there but not. This has me stumped! • "Do not enter" sign after iDefag finished

My wife's MacBook Pro (17") running 10.6.8 was sluggish so I ran iDefrag 2.1.1 successfully. It was still sluggish so I ran it again. (Both times restarting using the prompt in iDefrag.) The second time it successfully finished the defrag but when I restarted the MBP the Apple appeared at initial startup, the grey wheel spun for a bit and then another grey screen appeared with a grey "do not enter" symbol and the grey wheel spinning eternally. (The "do not enter" sign/symbol is a circle with the slash through it.)
I have booted her MBP as a target disk connected to my MBP (also a 17" running 10.6.8). I can see and access everything on her hard drive no problem. I tried rebooting my MBP using her MBP and I get the same "do not enter" sign.
So I ran Disk Utility from my MBP and it said "the volume appears to be OK."
So I bought and ran DiskWarrior 4.4 (I had DW 4.0 but it wouldn't run on 10.6.8). It says that the "drive is functioning normally".
I then used DW 4.4 to "Repair Disk Permissions" and "Check All Files & Folders" and it reported:
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/error
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/qmqpd
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/trivial-rewrite
Open error 18446744073709551594: "unknown error: -22" on usr/libexec/postfix/virtual
...then a bunch of others with the same Open error number.
Then it said that a bunch of .plist (Epson, HP and others) cannot be repaired.
Then I rebuilt the directory and it said: "All file and folder data was easily located." "Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be no changes to the number or contents of files and folders."
Still the same problem at startup... "do not enter".
So I restarted holding command-v to see what it had to say and it reported numberous things, such as:
Can't load kext com.apple.driver.ApplefileSystmeDriver - failed to resolve library dependencies.
    kext com.apple.driver.AppleFileSystmeDriver failed to load
Kext com.apple.iokit.IOAHCIBlockStorage - library kext com.apple.IOKIT.IOStorageFamily not found.
kext com.apple.driver.AppleFileSystemDriver failed to load (error 0xdc00800e)
The other kext that failed to load with the same error are:
    com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIMultimediaCommandsDevice
    com.apple.iokit.SCSITaskUserClient
    Then I get:
    Couldn't alloc class "IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType05"
    Couldn't alloc class SCSITaskUserClientIniter"
The OS install disks that came with this MBP are 10.6.3 and when I tried to do a re-install it said that it couldn't install on this Mac. So I thought that I'd install Lion and see if that fixes things but I can't find it on the store (maybe because Mountain Lion comes out next month?)
    Any suggestions?

    OS X doesn't need repair
Please tell me you don't seriously mean this. There is no file system in existence that will not have at least the occasional problem.
Right, and Disk Utility is there for that purpose.
Outside of corrupted caches that the free OnyX takes care of, one doesn't need anything more really.
File systems and the files themselves can be damaged in a myriad of ways without having physical sector or other hardware related problems.
And Disk Utility is there for that too.

Sorry, just don't see that, that's what backups are for.
There have been many cases in these forums alone where DiskWarrior was able to repair a drive's files or file system well enough for a user to at least back up their personal files when Disk Utility either declared the disk okay, or couldn't fix it.
I don't see it much used around here actually and if it was a seriously viable tool, I certainly would have incorporated it.
I've been using Mac's since day one, fixing them plenty and never had a need to use Disk Warrior, in fact I've had only one hard drive fail on me and it was due to mechanical reasons, it just died.
I don't know of any Apple geniuses that use it, nor any of the Mac computer repair techs that use it.
What I do see is desperate users  eager to grasp at a software solution that buy it, like they buy iDefrag or other software promises to "speed up" a Mac, like MacKeeper.
IMO the large proportion of DW users have much bigger problems that they really should be replacing the troubled portion or zero erasing and reinstalling instead.
Sorry, I'm just not sold on DW.
Ask Linc Davis about his opinion on Disk Warrior, see what he says.

  • My USB ports only work if i unplug them, swap them around and plug them back in. Its driving me crazy! I have done a pram and smc  reset, reinstalled lion and spent two hours on the phone to apple. Now what?!!

I have a optical lead coming out of the headphone jack in to a dac that goes in to my amp (which has speakers connected) so i can listen to music. The Dac is powered by usb. Recently the sound stopped working. I called tech support and they suggested the resets (pram and smc) and i reinstalled lion and reinstalled itunes, deleted audio files, blah blah blah.
So now when the computer turns off, or indeed randomly sometimes, I have to uplug the usb cable and put it in a different port, it then works. If I then put it back in to the original port it still works. Totally baffled. Can anyone please help. i have 3 children who are getting very bored at the sight of my growling perplexed face and the sight of my back!

I don't know why that happens, since I don't own products of this type...  However, if the sole purpose of the USB connection is to provide power (not a data connection), can you connect it to something that just provides power, such as a USB power adapter (like the one that comes with iPhone)?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD810LL/A/apple-5w-usb-power-adaptor
Or, if it needs to be connected to a USB port, it might work properly if you get a self-powered USB hub and connect the USB cable to the DAC to the hub.  The hub would act like a "buffer" between the DAC and iMac.  It needs to be "self-powered" (comes with its own power supply). Here's one such USB hub
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/USB2HB7PRO/
Do you have anything else connected to USB (other than standard keyboard and mouse)?  If so, have you tried it with ONLY the DAC connected, to see if the problem recurs?  USB devices can interfere with each other.

  • "Service Battery" after recalibration and SMC reset

I purchased a unibody 13'' MacBook Pro 13 months ago (and didn't have the foresight to buy Apple Care, oof) and I've lately been running into some battery issues.
I live overseas and I've been traveling a lot recently. I just moved into a new apartment and finally settled in. Within a few days I noticed that my battery was only lasting about 2 hours. I figured it was because I am forced to use a VPN for most my websites. Anyway. Using an app called Coconut Battery, the capacity of the battery was about 78% of its designed 5450mAh.
I recalibrated my battery last night and woke up to find the battery life had not improved. Following the Apple guide, I rest the the SMC and PRAM.
After it rebooted, it now says "SERVICE BATTERY." The battery got up to 99% charge and stayed there for over an hour before it finally charged. But now, my capacity, after only 70 cycles, is 52%, 2859mAh.
What would cause such a dramatic decrease in battery capacity for my laptop?
What are my options for remedying this issue? Draining the battery and attempting to recalibrate again?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 2859
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 2859
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 70
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 262
    Voltage (mV): 12587

When you get the service battery message the battery needs to be replaced - it  is like the service engine warning lamp on a car or the robot waving its arms and yelling "Danger Will Robinson."
If you have Apple's 3 year AppleCare you may be able to get the battery replaced under warranty - Apple says the battery should retain 80% of its charge after 1000 cycles and you didn't even get 1000 cycles out of it. Even if it isn't still under warranty you can at least ask for free replacement or a price break since it failed before reaching 1000 cycles. I know people who have been successful with such an appeal.

  • 10.5.5 and PMU reset locks Hard Disk!

    I upgraded my PB G4 12 from 10.4.11 to 10.5.5 and right away I noticed a drastic
shortening of battery life. I reset the PMU and now the HD is locked. When I attempt

    Available: --
    Used: Zero bytes on disk.
I attempted to repair permission, but to no avail.
Should I go back to 10.4.11?

I get dozens of the "ACL found but not expected ..." messages, all on the contents of System/Library/User Templates/. When I go to System/Library/ in Finder, only the User Templates folder has a red icon on it, indicating that I do not have access to it (when logged in as an admin). The icon does not appear on any of the other folders in System/Library. Does anyone have any idea on what's going on?

Thank you for the reply, and potential fixes. I have combed the MS site already. The workarounds may provide some return functionality, but this type issue between two companies as HP and MS seems peculiar, and I am holding out for a permanent bonafide solution.
For example, the "F8 override disabling all digital signatures" plus installing yet another program to continue with every reboot is just not a viable solution to me.

  • Having issues with MacBook after PRAM reset.

    Hello All,
I have a late 2009 MacBook, and have been having some minor performance issues and some problems with the trackpad. Changing system preferences failed to solve the problems I was experiencing so I decided to to a PRAM and NVRAM reset. Ever since the reset, I have been experiencing some new problems with the machine. Now, when I reboot I see no gray Apple screen. Nothing appears on the screen, in fact, until the log-in screen appears after about a minute. Second, I can no longer change the brightness with the keyboard commands, nor through system prefs. Lastly, I cannot wake the computer up after it enters sleep mode. I actually have to manually shut down the machine and turn it back on. Any ideas before I bring it to an expert?
Also--first reset was with OS X 10.5.8, then I upgraded to ML. Trackpad issues have cleared up a little but all other issues persist.
    Thanks guys.
    J

Try starting from the recovery disk and repairing the hard drive. Instructions from Apple:
OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery System. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up.
Select and run Disk Utility. In DU select the startup disk and run Repair Disk.

  • Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

Is it ok to have a PRAM and NVRAM reset two times a week?

No, it doesn't do any good unless you're having a problem that those procedures fix.
Edit: I've never reset PRAM or SMC/NVRAM on 4 out of 5 macs.

  • Bluetooth not available, PMU reset didn't fix it

Well, what can i say more? Bluetooth started disappearing a few months ago, but it used to come back to life after a reboot, with or without a PRAM or PMU reset, but now it's gone...

That may be it. I need to take it to apple. The Mac was fine but just this morning my power went out and when the power came back on and I tried to turn my Mac on the same thing happened. It just wouldn't turn on. I'm really really hoping leaving it unplugged for some time it will come back on again like last time. I don't see why it wouldn't but you never know.

  • Do Not Enter Sign on Macbook Pro. 2010 13 inch

    Hey Guys,
1.5 years into the life of my MBP and somethings gone wrong. Was getting the Mac out of sleep and it froze so I hard rebooted it, and it went to normal start up and then the Do Not Enter Sign came up and after googling it, tried everything. When i go into Disk Utility from the disc, it doesn't see the hard drive, only sees the disc itself. Weirdly, i dont know if anything's wrong with the hard drive since I have boot camp on the Mac, and I can log windows and even access the Macintosh partition and take files out. if anyone has any ideas, greatly suggested.
    thanks.

  • Randomly shutting down late 2012 27" iMac, 3.2 GHz i5 processor.  16 out of 32 GB ram (crucial).  Tried the PRAM and SMC, both did not work.

Hello,  I have a late 2012 27" iMac.  Its a 3.2 GHz i5 processor.  I originally upgraded my ram to 32 GB and was running like a champ for over a year.  Then, it started to randomly turn off no matter what I was doing.  I took it to the apple store and they said it was the ram.  So I ordered 16 GB of ram from Crucial that matched what they said my computer would need. I got it in last week and installed it and it still turns off randomly. I have tried the PRAM and SMC resets and the computer will run like a champ for 15-20 mins then turns off. I would love any help, advice or possible solutions as I am by no means a computer wiz. Thanks in advanced!

Very true - and the tests they do at the store are far better than the AHT. As well, Apple does not tell you where it puts the RAM - they just tell you to add RAM in the empty slots, LOL. Your About this Mac > Memory should show your two modules next to one another (which, as I've decided to "name" them would be slots 1 and 3 as showing from the top as you are looking at it with all the slots facing you (the bottom being towards the bottom of the display). The odd thing (to me) is that the 'about this mac' window still shows the same arrangement even though the modules are now placed vertically. In mine (with two rows of two slots side by side), it shows the OEM RAM in the top and the additional RAM I added on the bottom (which is exactly how the slots are arranged):
And, one more thought - maybe way off - the late 2009/mid 2010/early 2011 iMacs had problems with adding a full complement of third party RAM (they were ok with all OEM or a lesser amount of third party RAM - that is why mine only has 12 GB rather than the supported 16 GB). There were several very lengthy threads about this; I will try to find one of them which I had bookmarked (I can't find my bookmarks in this new iteration here)...
